Open Thread: Romney's Strategery

By NB Staff | March 22, 2012 | 09:22

A  A

GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney's campaign strategy is in focus with two stories highlighting it. The first is a remark that's now become infamous by an adviser named Eric Fehrnstrom who compared Romney to the children's toy Etch-a-Sketch, stating that in the general election, Romney would become a completely new candidate and not necessarily the conservative he's presented himself as. While trying to draw in centrists is something that almost every campaign tries to do after getting through the primaries, Fehrnstrom's remarks were so blatant that they've upset many.

Speaking of Romney's general election strategy (should he indeed win the nomination), National Review's Jim Geraghty argues that the main point to it will be Romney calling President Obama in over his head as an easier way of helping people who had voted for the president in 2008 reverse their choice this time. Rather than telling such voters they're stupid, the argument goes, they should be told that Obama has had his chance but just hasn't been up to snuff.

In non-political news, today is the first day of Sweet Sixteen play with Michigan State taking on Louisville and Marquette battling Florida. Who are your picks?

"just hasn't been up to snuff."

Submitted by Newsbubba on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 11:40am.

That is sooooooo racist!

How can anyone say that the President (or the First Lady, for that matter) ain't "up to snuff" when they look at the lower lip snuff bucket that both of them sport?

I can see saying He ain't worth a bucket of spit, but He is definitely "up to snuff," and a few other things, too.

All of you "legal eagles" out there

Submitted by billb on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 11:44am.

News is out now that Ted Stevens (R) was ILLEGALLY charged. and he was removed from his seat in the senate. As result he was unable to vote on Obamacare. His vote may have stopped this bill from passing. This appears to be a case of voter suppression. On this basis alone, can the bill be declared illegal? Everyone knows that given the chance, he'd have voted NO.

Nope, the Democrat in that

Submitted by dscott on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 4:55pm.

Nope, the Democrat in that race won the popular vote. This is no different than any other politician lying to the public to get votes, he/she is not accountable legally for any promises made or falsehoods spoken. Courts have already ruled on that. It's up to the voters to elect a different politician when the 6 year term is up. Not even a recall is available to the voters since this is a election for federal office. Recalls are only allowed in State and Local elections.

He was unable to run because he was under indictment on a bogus charge! The charge could have been made to keep him from running again.

I don't think you are going

Submitted by Gat New York on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 11:50am.

I don't think you are going to see Eric Fehrnstrom as a spokesperson for Romney any time soon again. That was a dumb off-the-cuff remark.

What is troubling that both Gingrich and Santorum both picked up on it waving around the child's toy which only made them appear very desperate.

What is interesting is Rasmussen's Louisiana polling where Santorum is well ahead of Romney, yet the same people polled overwhelmingly believe Romney will be the nominee and strongly believe he would be the one to beat Obama - which is their primary concern.

I really do not think Obama has a chance of winning. Whatever chance he had went away with his refusal to evoke executive orders to reopen off-shore and on-shore drilling for oil which would have an immediate effect on speculators and begin to drive down oil prices. As it stands, the escalating oil prices and weak dollar (deficit and debt) are driving up all prices (inflation) and we have not even hit the peak oil usage month of July.

When the prices of gas and diesel at the pump peak over the summer Obama will be lucky to get a single vote from teamsters (no matter what James Hoffa says) or any other working family who will be struggling to fill up the family care or get to work or buy food off the shelf.

The economy will be so bad that even Soupy Sales would beat Obama for President.

Totally disagree with strategy

Submitted by Demonhunter on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 1:20pm.

I totally disagree with the strategy of claiming Obama is in over his head.

First, you must indict the media for lying and covering for Obama. Had they told the truth, the American people would not have elected this phony.

Second, you cannot let the rest of the Democrats skate on this. The Democrat party is guilty of supporting this radical anti-freedom, anti-American agenda. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the entire party leadership have supported every violation of the Constitution, every violation of the law, and every violation of established procedures. They are full participants in the attempt to establish a fascist regime.

AP BS

Submitted by ricklail on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 1:49pm.

Last night in his talking points O'Reilly said that at report from the AP said that 35 years of drilling for oil had not lowered the price of gas. That struck me as total BS.

Liberal Logic

Submitted by Hunter12 on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 7:28pm.

When you're a liberal, you can claim that adding an abundance of one thing did nothing to improve the situation and then turn around and claim that adding an abundance of something else was the saving grace to another. All that TARP money kept the unemployment numbers from skyrocketing above 15% and saved millions of jobs, but that extra oil available for sale didn't keep gas prices from climbing to even higher rates than they might have. Just because TARP didn't bring unemployment down to the promised 5% doesn't mean it was a total failure. Look at the great things that happend when the Democrats threw billions at Green Jobs. I think those companies created almost 5,000 temporary jobs. Let look at Solyndra. $538 million and 1000 jobs for a year. That's only $540,000 per job. What a great deal for the tax payer! [It's actually closer to $500,000 per job, because I think the Obama campaign got about $40 million from those people who got the loan.]

The new meme for energy

Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 5:20pm.

There seems to be a new meme for energy out these days and I'm sure a lot of you have heard about it.  Quite frankly it irritates the hell out of me and especially more so when the libs are spouting this one line, which coincidentally got repeated several times by the blowhard Bob Beckel on The Five(today he was sporting some shades, must have tied one on last night and couldn't get rid of the bloodshot eyes or something) which was this:

"So you aren't for Alternative Energy?"  He asked this of the rest of the Five as if he were trying to guilt them about something.  It was pathetic!

What made me mad was the others couldn't really say what needed to be said about "Alternative Energy" which is that it's impractical as hell.  Just to get it out of the way right now, if someone were to ask me outright if I'm for alternative energy, I would say not just no, but HELL NO.  I'm for PRACTICAL alternative energy and it's not practical at all.

So don't be afraid to stand up for it, just say HELL NO to alternative energy.

I know the biggest problem is the value of the dollar having gone down so much, but all this nonsense about our own production or lack of is just that, nonsense, not to mention the stupid "Clean Air Act" that makes refineries, the ones still existing today if they haven't been forcibly shutdown, makes 40+ blends of gas, including ethanol(which really needs to go away), causes the proce to go up anyway.

When they temporarily suspended the Clean Air Act just after Hurricane Rita, the price of gas came right back down.  They need to get rid of that stupid act and get off the stupid ethanol and dozens of blends.

Jon, Did you like the Sackett

Submitted by Hunter12 on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 8:05pm.

Jon, Did you like the Sackett vs EPA ruling today? When a business has to have its competition's operating costs inflated to make its own margins marginally profitable, you know it is not the right time to launch it. If the government would get out of the way, some modern-day Edison or Ford would eventually find a way to create green energy that can compete with gas and coal. Our President is now in favor of domestic oil drilling and pipelines to move that new oil around seven months from election day. That is not his historical stance on the current energy sources we have. I wonder if he'd be willing to sit down at a table and sign new binding drilling licenses and waive all the studies that must take place before a proposed offshore well can be moved five feet? This latest stance of his is nothing more than a wink-wink, nod-nod to his liberal base, with the media running the stories like something will actually happen to bring down gas prices long term.

He's for a pipeline.......

Submitted by GregE on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 8:34pm.

.........that moves American oil from one state to another. He's not for the part that gets Canadian oil into the USA. He's simply pandering for votes. It's part of the Keystone XL but it's not THE entire pipeline that has been the front page news in recent weeks. He'll tout this piece and call it Keystone, because it is part of it, and the sheeple won't know any difference.

My doctor is a holistic doctor and says there is no such thing as "alternative medicine." It's MEDICINE, period. Same with "alternative energy." It's a nice buzzphrase they like to use.

Dibs on the NFL Cheerleader Investigation

Submitted by Hunter12 on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 8:16pm.

Our wonderful Senate doesn't have time to write and pass a budget, but they're going to make time to hold hearings on the NFL Bounty scandal. My lovely Senator DICK Durbin announced that today. I just want it to be known that I have dibs on any investigations into cheerleader pillow fights and I'm willing to go the extra mile to get to the bottoms of any shenanigans, or the tops of any, as well. I also volunteer if the Senate needs someone to look into the quality of beer, luxury cars, tropical beaches, or five-star hotels.

Seriously, fix the freaking economy, dumbasses.
