Open Thread: Santorum, Romney Split Alabama, Mississippi, Hawaii

By NB Staff | March 14, 2012 | 08:43

A  A

Three states voted yesterday in the GOP presidential primary with Rick Santorum winning the states of Alabama and Mississippi and Mitt Romney winning Hawaii. Things are more complicated than that, however, due to the fact that delegates to the RNC weren't given out on a winner-take-all basis. Thanks to his relatively close finishes in the two states won by Santorum and an additional victory in American Samoa, Mitt Romney actually came away with the most delegates last night. While Santorum and Romney did well, last night was a tough one for Newt Gingrich, who failed to win the popular vote in any of the contests. More below the break from the Washington Times:

With 98 percent of the precincts counted in Alabama, Mr. Santorum pulled in 38 percent of the vote; Mr. Gingrich, 23 percent; and Mr. Romney, 23 percent, according to the AP. In Mississippi, Mr. Santorum held 35 percent; Mr. Gingrich, 32 percent; and Mr. Romney, 32 percent with 99 percent of the precincts counted.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who finished in single digits in both primaries, basically skipped the southern states to focus his money and energy elsewhere — though he did pick up a single delegate in the Hawaii caucuses.

Taken together, Mr. Romney walked away with at least 40 delegates and Mr. Santorum won at least 34, while Newt Gingrich added at least 24 delegates and Ron Paul got at least 1, according to the AP.

There were more than 107 delegates to the Republican National Convention up for grabs Tuesday: 47 in Alabama, 37 in Mississippi, 17 in Hawaii caucuses and six more in caucuses in American Samoa.

At an election-night party in Lafayette, La., Mr. Santorum opened his victory speech with, “We did it again.”

Promising supporters that he plans to “compete everywhere” in the upcoming contests, the former Pennsylvania senator said, “The time is now for conservatives to pull together. The time is now to make sure that we have the best chance to win this election. And the best chance to win this election is to nominate a conservative to go up against Barack Obama.”

The good news for the Santorum campaign was generally viewed as bad news for Mr. Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman who had predicted he would win in both Southern states.

But in his comments to supporters in Birmingham, Ala., the former House speaker and longtime Georgia congressman made it clear he has no intentions of stepping aside before the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., in August.

“I emphasize going to Tampa because one of the things tonight proves is that the elite media’s attempts to convince the nation that Mitt Romney is inevitable just collapsed,” he said to cheers.

Playing the Yankees

Submitted by dan iroticiv on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 9:07am.

We are going up against a major league foe this November and because some of our more conservative friends don't like the uniform of our team, they have decided to send the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to face the NY Yankees this November.

Last election we sent our less conservative friend to face the same foe. It didn't work out very well, so in my opinion we're trying to send in our relief pitcher.

What you are sending is a minor league bench warmer. I could almost understand voting for Gingrich, at least he is in the same league as Obama. Won't win, but would be fun to watch. Voting for Santorum is a vote for 4 more years of Obama and reinforces the caricature of some in the GOP. Santorum might be a nice guy, but he will get destroyed by Obama in the general.

Ok I will spare any analogies. Obama would have won in 2008 if we put Ronald Reagan against him. The country was in no mood for another republican after 8 years of President Bush. Dole was thrown to the wolves against a successful and very popular president clinton. Like it or not Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich are NOT electable, you can stamp your silly right wing feet all day long, and go out and vote for an unqualified unelectable candidate all you want, but we will get our asses kicked in Novemeber. You might like the nonsense Santorum says, but half of this country finds him unqualified and scary. I have never voted for a democrat, but would never vote for Santorum to lead our country. My guess is that the same people would be happy to have Sarah Palin on the ticket again. Maybe we need to nominate Santorum, get totally destroyed in the general and finally put a stake in the hearts of the far right that is destroying our party. .

A lesson for Republicans

Submitted by lrgon on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 11:57am.

Richard Nixon nailed soviet spy Alger Hiss and for a while it looked like Nixon was the genuine article (loyal , patriotic and anti-UN) but it turned out that his lust of the presidency was more powerful than his love of country and joined the UN crowd and the anti-American organization -the CFR.

As president Nixon strapped the nation with: the EPA, Wage and Price Controls, More bureaucracy stifling energy production, 55 MPH laws, OSHA, the "war on drugs," we lost in Vietnam and MIAs's and POWs were left behind. Nixon left the nation more impoverished with more inflationary policies, more debt and placed more CFR people running our government. Perhaps, the worst of all his actions was that Nixon gave diplomatic recognition to the murdering outlaw nation of Red China. With that one act he betrayed all of mankind by coddling communism. How serious he was in chasing Alger Hiss one will never really know. My guess is that he was just a tricky little politician using people to advance his political career.

Santorum the supposed "prolifer" coddled abortionists Arlen Spector and partial birth abortion advocate former New Jersey Governoress Todd Whitman. Two of the most dispicable liars and anti-baby politicians on the planet. If Santorum gets into the White House expect more betrayals along the lines of "tricky dick."

note to Ann C and other Rmoney fans...

Submitted by vrwc13 on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 12:54pm.

facts from yesterday:

  • the evangelicals came out yesterday for the conservatives
  • more women voted for the conservatives than the others

facts in general:

  • over 75% of the U.S. claim to be Christian
  • under 2% claim to be Mormon

observations of the dems:

  • they want Rmoney against the pResident
  • "Obama camp: If election were today, Mitt would win" (see above, this is 'bait')
  • they are going after the 'women' vote (see all the news stories this week on 'GOP war on women')
  • they gave up some of the Catholic vote for more of the women vote
  • they count on most of the minority vote
  • they believe the women and minority vote will win it for them, as many evangelicals sit it out

if Rmoney is the GOP nominee:

  • the dems get what they want
  • the conservatives lose
  • the evangelicals lose
  • the GOP will lose

why?

  • the dems / liberal media will not have obamacare on the table because of Rmoneycare
  • the dems / liberal media will expose the tenets of Rmoney's faith and turn off women voters
  • the dems / liberal media will expose the tenets of Rmoney's faith and turn off the evangelicals
  • the dems and the liberal media will do whatever it takes, including the above, to win

Romney says Santorum needs "miracle" to get nomination

...myself, and I expect many other conservatives and evangelicals, are counting on that 'miracle'!

vrwc 13 - Well said!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 1:30pm.

This season, we are actually in an epic battle not only for the future of our nation, but for conservatism to boot. I would like to see Sarah Palin become the new National Chairperson of the RNC and most of the feeble R – State Committees reorganized along real conservative lines. Additionally, we need to oust all the “reach across the aisle” congress critters in 2014 and replace them with people of real character and get rid of this “winner take all” BS.

Additional information: A poll from yesterday indicated that 30% of the voters identified themselves as either “moderate” or “liberal” (I’m probably assuming falsely that those voters meant to say “libertarian”). If true, the poll suggests that we can expect at least 30 or so percentile to be inclined to vote for Mittens... YUK!
