Two big showdowns this week: One with an upset and one that went mostly as planned. Comment on this post on the New Hampshire primary or the BCS football championship. Yesterday was it for college football but the next big game in the Republican presidential race is January 21, 11 days away. What are your predictions for that state?

And it sucked.

Not sure about the primary.

I am furious at Newt. I was firmly in his court until the latest round of idiocy. Now I'm not sure who I shall vote for.....not Romney, though.

We're screwed

Submitted by Dave. on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 12:52am.

We are going to get stuck with Mittens RINOmney as the nominee.

Newt has allowed his inner liberal to escape over the last couple of days, so he is pretty much toast among true conservatives.

The republican campaign has degenerated into a circular firing squad (actually, it’s a cluster fornication), with two RINOs and an unelectable libertarian at the top of the heap.

If I were Obama, I’d be LMAO.

McCain redux, anyone?

Damn, this is depressing. :-(

OMO! The arrogance of the man is WORSE THAN OBAMA:

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Ron Paul tonight scored an historic second-place victory in the 2012 New Hampshire Primary. Below please find comments from National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton:

“Ron Paul tonight had an incredibly strong second-place finish in New Hampshire and has stunned the national media and political establishment.

“When added to Paul’s top-tier showing in Iowa, it’s clear he is the sole Republican candidate who can take on and defeat both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.

“The race is becoming more clearly a two-man race between establishment candidate Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, the candidate of authentic change. That means there is only one true conservative choice.

"Ron Paul has won more votes in Iowa and New Hampshire than any candidate but Mitt Romney.

"Ron Paul and Mitt Romney have been shown in national polls to be the only two candidates who can defeat Barack Obama.

"And Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are the only two candidates who can run a full, national campaign, competing in state after state over the coming weeks and months. Ron Paul's fundraising numbers -- over $13 million this quarter -- also prove he will be able to compete with Mitt Romney. No other candidate can do all of these things.

"Ron Paul is clearly the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney as the campaign goes forward.

“We urge Ron Paul’s opponents who have been unsuccessfully trying to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney to unite by getting out of the race and uniting behind Paul’s candidacy.

“Ron Paul has the boldest plan to cut spending, a dedication to protecting life, and a lifelong dedication to the Constitution and limited government. He also has the necessary support to campaign nationwide against Mitt Romney.

“Our campaign is already planning ahead for South Carolina, Florida, and beyond. Soon Ron Paul will head to South Carolina to begin a feverish round of campaigning.

“Ron Paul is in this race for the long haul. And he is ready to fight.

“See you on the campaign trail.”

Someone stab me...I'm not believing the arrogance of this little twit.

That little blurb did not mention the candidates name enough.

Someone might wanna talk to King Crank's election people. This ain't a parlamentary system. It is winner take all here. 2nd place means jack squat when all of the electoral votes go to the winner. Just ask 2nd place finisher Al Gore. He had a 2nd place finish that was whisper thin. Didn't mean jack squat when the new Administration was sworn in.

and being made nauseous by it, I am comforted by the fact that there is no way in heaven or hell that Paul will ever get the nomination. He is on a delusional vanity tour with his campaign, and believes that he's leading some kind of political crusade. He and his cultish followers are all deluded fools. Paul is 76 years old...this is his last futile grab at the brass ring and he's going to hang on till the bitter end, unfortunately. I loathe this little toad, and have decided to just ignore him until he is finally gone from presidential politics, once and for all.

I can see it now. A national presidential election featuring the Three Stooges, Mitt, Twit, and Sh!t.

I thought nothing could make me sit this out, but I'm having to rethink it, if Ron Paul slips out of his straight jacket and runs as a third party candidate.

Well, at least I'll have an excuse to drink after that!

I think there are major differences this year

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 12:47am.

compared to '08.

  1. We're not coming off of 8 years of Bush. Or anyone else, for that matter. We're fickle in this country and 12 years of the same party occupying the WH is pretty rare. That was going against the GOP regardless of the nominee last time; not this time.
  2. Obama actually has a record. In '08, he was just a smooth voice and a way to transcend a ratial hangup. Both are now way overused and a lot less inviting for independents.
  3. Romney is no McCain. With all due respect to Johnny Mac, he made a terrible candidate. Put aside his moderate politics, he looked the doddering old man next to the "dapper" and "new" Obama. It was bad optics, as they say.
  4. The economy was tanking, but the pain at that point was minimal and mostly confined to the big banks. It was mostly fear; justifiable, but the scale and scope of the recession wasn't yet known or being felt. And McCain "suspending his campaign" and running back to DC looked like an idiot. Bad advice by his team. Now we've got widespread pain that's been dug in deep and no foreseeable relief.
  5. Americans were war weary in '08, but GITMO is still open, we JUST brought troops home from Iraq and there's a real chance that country will devolve into a real mess between now and November, and Iran could be an unstoppable distance from a nuclear weapon. All on Obama's watch. Afghanistan, instead of being 7 years old, will be over a decade and the killing of ObL will look like an overblown event. Why are we still fighting if you got Osama, Obama?

None of this bodes well for Obama. Romney may not be the best option, but he can definitely out-debate Obama, and he'll look every bit Obama's better rather than like his grandfather on stage. He's calmer, better-spoken and much more "presidential" than McCain. He'll inspire confidence with moderates rather than concern. We'll have to bite the bullet and make sure we take the Senate, but anyone -except maybe Paul- is better than Obama.

Convincing at all?

Totally. We need the hard-core conservatives (where they can win; continue the 2010 gains) in Congress and maintain power in the committee seats and put up a presidential candidate who can win nationally.

Let's be real folks. When Reagan won his landslide, California and Massachusetts went red. CA and MA will never go red again. They're dyed-in-the-crapper blue states. The demographics have changed, and not just on the left coast. We have to be realistic and win with the moderate voters who regret voting for Obama.

Meanwhile, Romney won't be appointing anymore ACLU commie justices to the Supreme Court like Obama will who if given another chance will seal the fate of this country where it matters (in the courts!). We have to get behind the obvious winner -- Romney. (And the claim that he appointed Dem. judges in MA doesn't count because the way MA works, a 100% Democrat committee chooses the appointments and by law he has to pick from that pool).

Meanwhile, Romney/Rubio in 2012!!

Baloney. We win Florida and the latino vote. And Rubio, who is as sharp as a tack, will flip Biden's plugs in the debate. And you want your conservative bona fides candidate? Have him supporting Romney. There's no way this ticket doesn't get both moderates and tea partiers.

This is a forward and optimistic ticket, unlike that grouchy, old Newt (Chucky's grand-dad) or that one-foot-in-the-grave Ron Paul (who would be as old as Reagan when Reagan FINISHED his 8 years) or who's that other guy, oh, yeah, Huntsman. People will still be saying "who?" come November if he's still around. And Perry? Please. Who's left. Oh, yes, Santorum. Sarah Palin wasn't even Palinized as bad as he will be if he gets the nomination.

Romney/Rubio! (Or, Romney/Rand Paul?! I'd totally go for that too.)

Romney wins the Republican

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 12:14pm.

Romney wins the Republican nomination, Republicans and Conservatives will lose the White House, plain and simple.

I can already see it, the countless upon countless of Democratic attack adds against Romney showing his countless upon countless of flip-flops using his own words and laws in Mass. For abortion against abortion, for homosexual rights against homosexual rights, Not a Republican a Republican. Romney is nothing, but a flip-flopper RINO. Additionally, I can already see it, Romney says, "Obamacare is a disaster. It is horrrible." Obama answers, "Well funny thing Gov. Romney since it is a mirror image of Romneycare thanks to the advisors you sent to us to help us draft Obamacare."

Romney wins and one of the biggest issues, Obamacare, is off the table.

Sadly, too many Right-wingers and Independents have bought into the Liberal Media and the Republican elite narrative that only Romney can defeat the disaster of a President we have right now. Complete B.S. I think the Romney supporters are in for a ride, just like the McCain supporters were. Yes, the media loves you now, wait until you start going against their favorite Left wing god.

I was a lot more optomistic before the primaries that we could defeat Obama, now I believe Obama will win, but Republicans will take both houses of Congress.

>> Romney wins and one of the biggest issues,
>> Obamacare, is off the table.

Exactly. The sheer number of conservatives who don't recognize this is astounding. You can talk about Obama's socialist agenda until the cows come home, but most of it has no direct impact on everyone's lives. Most of it has indirect impacts, or only directly affects a small number of people. For example, blocking Boing's move to SC was a heinous abuse of power, but only a few people were directly affected. Also, since socialism looks beautiful when given only a superficial examination a lot of people will look favorably at things like "Cash for Clunkers".

Socialized medicine is different. This directly affects everyone, and has been shown to be nothing but a disaster and a lie from day one. I even overheard a homosexual the other day saying that he "hates socialized medicine" ==> I think this is the first time in my life I have ever heard a homosexual express a position on a politicial issue that differed from the official homosexual opinion on the issue. If even one of the most notorious group-thinking groups is showing cracks when it comes to this issue then you know this is a deadly issue for Obama.

THIS IS WHY THE MEDIA HAS BEEN PUSHING FOR ROMNEY'S NOMINATION. They've accepted the fact that the Republicans are going to nominate someone and that Huntsman will not win, so they've chosen this guy. This is why every candidate that becomes a theat to his nomination becomes the target of a anti-Palin-like smear campaign.

And millions of conservatives just go along with it. They'll bash the media day and night but when push comes to shove the media still directs what they do.

Advice for Romney

Submitted by billb on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 10:40am.

If Romney wins the nomination, and gets to debate Obama, his opening statement should include this message,"Mr President, as you are aware I have just finished a bruising campaign in which a lot of half truths and political rhetoric were used against me. I will assume now that I am about to debate the President of the USA we will debate the facts and the truth!"
