Open Thread: Labor Unrest at the New York Times?
In what could become a major battle between several newspaper unions and the New York Times, according to the New York Post, the Communications Workers of America has already earmarked $350,000 to put towards the conflict that could arise.
The Newspaper Guild and the Mailers Union Local 6 have both been without contracts since March 31. Both of these unions sent letters in October to Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the chairman and publisher of the Times, and Janet Robinson, then-president and CEO. The letters explained that given the Times' current financial situation, there is a very grim picture for the hundreds of employees that these unions represent at the Times, and also claim that the Times is backing down on previous lifetime job guarantees.
What do you think of labor unions coming back to bite the Times? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
The battle between the unions and the Times could drag on for a significant length of time, given the departure of former CEO Janet Robinson. From the New York Post:
[The Guild representative for the Times, Anthony] Napoli said he expects that the sudden departure of Robinson will only slow down the bargaining process, which has already been very drawn out. “We don’t know what is going to happen. She’s not at the table, but clearly the CEO will be very involved in whatever happens,” he said.
The question of who will get to be the new CEO of the Times Co. became a little murkier this week with the news that the 16-title regional newspaper group, controlled by Sulzberger’s influential first cousin, Michael Golden, is being sold off.
With nothing on Golden’s plate, one inside rumor to catch fire is that he is being positioned for the CEO job.
Not only is there a rift with the labor unions, but if Golden becomes CEO, there could be a rift in the family as to the direction of the Times. The previous failures associated with the paywall and turning around About.com could call for an outsider to become CEO.
What do you think will be the future of the Times?

Yeah "and also claim that the Times is backing down on previous lifetime job guarantees" kinda took me aback. How does anyone expect lifetime employment. The only place I can see it is in the pen where you can have a lifetime vocation and employment.
This really is sweet!

The "Paper of Record" for all good little commies in the USSA is fighting with the union? The "working people?"
Why whatever are they thinking?
Come on Times. Man up. Redistribute ALL of the family fortunes of the owners, directors, editors, and publishers of the NYT to "the people."
Oh, yeah. One more point. THIS IS WHY YOUR IDIOTIC, LIBERAL POLICIES NEVER WORK IN THE END, YOU MORONS!!!

Also spoke with a retired Navy officer today who said a buddy still on active duty just sent him a 20 page list of senior Navy officers who have been asked to resign over very trivial administrative crap, or face charges and loss of retirement.
Seems Obama has started the purge of our military forces to promote his own "boys" into senior positions. It's just one more step in the RBFSOB's plan. God save the Second Amendment. When that goes, you know we're screwed.

The NYSlime should raise it's rates.
They keep on saying the government should raise taxes to be able to pay for everything so why shouldn't the NYSlime practice what it preaches?
Lets see how long they last after doing that.
Oh this is so SWEEEET!!! Will bankruptcy be to far behind?
My only hope is that if they do declare bankruptcy is that it does not happen until after Jan 2013. I do NOT want a government bailout of this rag.

The fun part will be watching the NYT's reporting on its own labor troubles. There'll be plenty of "no comment" replies from the hypocritical NYT's to other media inquiries, you betcha. As others have said, the spectacle is wonderful, like a new shiny Christmas decoration on the tree.

Continuing the discussion that is the debacle of the Obama Foreign Policy:
I disagree that war is, or should be classified under foreign policy in that engaging in war is not normally a policy platform for the US. It is the result of a failure of policy; at least in my mind. I know you disagree with that, but be that as it may, I do consider that the US ending the war in Iraq re-institutes foreign policy with that country.
Our dealing with Iraq now clearly falls under the purview of the State Department; we can engage or disengage - either would be our policy toward this foreign entity. Agree? What if our policy toward this foreign nation -our foreign policy, if you will- leads toward the implosion of that nation and all that so many gave so much for; that would be a disastrous outcome, no?
Gird your loins.
But no matter, he had a campaign promise to fill, the POS.
[Edit]
Wait, there's more; on a different front. Apparently the economy is so bad that Obama chooses to taught the death of OBL as an example of his expertise in foreign policy- something historically associated as diplomacy, especially among Democrats and anti-war Progressives. Obama's new campaign slogan: "I've screwed everything up so bad and in so many ways that I'm running on my one success, which is typically associated with my opponents."
"Naïve" will in the future be defined as "Obama". "You're really obama if you think that guy likes you for your mind." That sort of thing.

To the bloodbath to come in Iraq. Any who made the mistake of allying themselves with us will pay the price. The Iraqi "boat lift", metaphorically speaking, is on the horizon. I hope the Kurds, at least, can keep what they have gained by our presence. I was not a fan of this invasion when it was implemented, feeling (at the time and NOT in hindsight) that it was a political mistake (NOT a moral or strategic one) on Bush's part. But once in I felt we should do and finish the job and not run away like Democrats always do.

Politically Correct 12 Days of Christmas*
On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my significant other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me:
TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming,
ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract even though they will not be asked to play a note),
TEN melanin-deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping,
NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression,
EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans,
SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands,
SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products,
FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration, (NOTE: after members of the Animal Liberation Front threatened to throw red paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens, and partridge have been reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further Animal-American enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised.)
FOUR hours of recorded whale songs,
THREE deconstructionist poets,
TWO Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses,
and ONE Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree.
Merry Christmas.
Happy Chanukah/Hanukkah.
Good Kwanzaa.
Blessed Yule. Oh, heck!
Happy Holidays!!!! (unless otherwise prohibited by law)
Unless, of course, you are suffering from Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD). If this be the case, please substitute this gratuitous call for celebration with a suggestion that you have a thoroughly adequate day.

Romneycare faces financial meltdown
'At some point you run out of other people's money to spend on your promises'
The economic downturn and the Massachusetts individual mandate have led to huge spending increases in Massachusetts state-funded insurance programs.
Brase said the individual mandate from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's program is directly connected to the present situation. She recalled that former Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill issued a warning about the program being used as a model for Obamacare. ...oops
