Open Thread: Does Obama Want to Be Re-elected?

By NB Staff | November 29, 2011 | 12:44

A  A

Even President Obama's supporters would agree that enthusiasm for his 2012 campaign pales in comparison to the energy generated by his 2008 campaign. The stammering of his campaign has led some to question whether his heart is even in it for re-election, especially after his recent comments on American voters, who he said have "fallen behind" and gotten "lazy."

Do you think Obama is hoping to be re-elected? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The past three years of Obama's presidency have not turned out to be the hope and change he promised, especially with the downturn in the economy and failed stimulus packages. As he's traveled the county the past few months on campaigns, he has often been disparaging to the very people supposed to be voting for him next fall. According to Joseph Curl in the Washington Times:

...Democrats must spend - spend and spend and spend. It’s in their DNA. Mr. Obama offered a $3.8 trillion budget this year, to be paid for by - $2.1 trillion in revenue (read: your money). He knows that over the next four years, with automatic budget cuts set to take effect and the American people’s rising ire over the profligate spending in Washington, he’s going to have no money to redistribute to the masses.

So, why bother? It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Who needs it? Why preside over a government that, instead of giving everything to everybody free, takes it all away, cuts so deeply that nearly every American will be affected? Especially if you think Americans are lazy, lack ambition - they’ll never rise to the challenge, so why not just bail?

Two Democratic strategists, Patrick Caddell and Douglas Schoen, said “He should abandon his candidacy for re-election in favor of a clear alternative, one capable not only of saving the Democratic Party, but more important, of governing effectively and in a way that preserves the most important of the president’s accomplishments. He should step aside...for the one candidate who would become, by acclamation, the nominee of the Democratic Party: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.”

As reported at NewsBusters, even some of Obama's biggest cheerleaders have begun backing away from him. MSNBC's Chris Matthews recently said "The day he got inaugurated, he sent us all home and said, 'Thank you, now watch how smart I am.' That's the worst kind of a notion of the presidency."

Do you think Obama wants a second term? Will Americans be willing to re-elect him?

I don't think Obama cares

Submitted by Gat New York on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:55pm.

He started his campaign extra early (not that he ever stopped) because he needs to show that his candidacy is viable by early next year or democratic leaders will ask him to step aside and make it worth his while to do so. Democrats do not want to lose the Senate and the Presidency. Having another candidate like Hillary Clinton would give them a chance at holding the Presidency.

Out of office, Obama will make a fortune with his gold-plated teleprompters. In fact he might even get into private enterprise by branding his own line of teleprompters and call them Obampters.

It's Ego vs. Stamina

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:05pm.

He's a narcissist who has never lost an election. He wants to WIN re-election to vindicate his first term performance, even though he knows he can accomplish nothing in a second term.

He's also exhausted. Lacking any leadership skills and experience, the job is far more burdensome and stressful than anything he has ever experienced, and he is showing the physical signs of exhaustion. From this perspective, I believe his subconscious (and his wife) wants him to LOSE.

I believe he does want re-election

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:41pm.

But, like a petulant child, he's pissed that the thrill is gone and people are actually having the temerity to question him! The media isn't enraptured like it was in '08, and Europe is actually mocking him. His Muslim benificiaries are burning him in effigy while blowing off his peace-making efforts. He's lost the independents and many of the center-left. He's losing the Hispanic vote, and even a small percentage of the Black vote. He's given up on White Middle-America entirely.
He thought he could slide into the presidency and basically have the final (and only) word on virtually everything. Congress existed solely to do his bidding (remember, he also had a super-majority at the time).
He believed the delusion that he was "The One" and could, with a word, make the entire world do whatever his superior intellect decided was best for everyone. Unfortunately for him, reality set in. Yet he still can't understand why things aren't going his way.

Life was easy when all Obama

Submitted by inquiringmind on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:59pm.

Life was easy when all Obama had to do was vote present. Now that he has to make real decisions and be held accountable for those decisions, it ain't so easy, or fun.

Also in politics sometimes a person has to make deals with people who they feel are lesser than them. I think he feels conservatives and the Tea Party are beneth him and hates having to deal with us.

He has checked out.

He can't run on his record

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 1:14pm.

Because it's Obysmal, so Obama's trying to run against Congress.

As my pal MOTUS said....it's now "The Audacity of Nope ~ Not My Fault. Next"

I think Obama likes the campaigning....and the Presidentia perks he has, the chopper, motorcades, and of course, AF1.  The adoring crowds (even if they are bought and paid for) where he happily reads his teleprompter.  But the crowds are thinning, he's getting heckled, and I do believe the thrill is gone.

He won't bow out willingly, though.  There is no way his ego would allow that.

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 1:02pm.

Sure, he wants to get reelected - but he is also a person who has been told by others what to think and what to do all his life. He has no intestinal fortitude and cannot cope with any criticism. He has no desire to do what it takes to get reelected.

That is why (IMO) his handlers (and the powers that be within the DNC) are counting on the news media to destroy any opponent that might run against him… including Hillary!

Hell, Scoobie-Doo, when Barry

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 5:59pm.

Hell, Scoobie-Doo, when Barry was in Honolulu - the capital of ASIA - the other week, I heard that the whole section of town was shut down - work, roads, commutes, everything!!! And that went on for some days!!! Now...........what kind of economic impact did you think that had??? Not to mention traffic, inconvenience, hassle, etc. He turns Kailua (the little beach town where he likes to vacation during Christmas) into a nightmare everytime he comes there - I've seen it with my own eyes.

I think the word 'depraved'

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:56pm.

I think the word 'depraved' could also be used - given his attitude and views of the USA, freedom, independance, ethics, and the traditional definition of American liberty and lifestyle. He only focuses on the 'bad' aspects of Americanism - of which we have our share - but go through any history of any country, and you're going to find things that weren't the 'right' thing to do - but what's done is done, and I think we've more than made up for our transgressions.

I think Barry would take another term as 'President'..........although he'd probably like to call it 'King', or 'Emporer', or 'Great Leader', or some other definition to where he is the sole power, and anything else that goes on politically is either subserviant, or of no consequence, to him...................which is basically what he's been trying to do since he was coronated.

Predictions

Submitted by MadRat on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:46pm.

I have to agree with you. Most politicians know when to give up on an issue or at least be smart enough to have good advisers that will tell them to tell them to change course. Obama has never been that type of guy. Political positions are something he gives to his friends, not the people best qualified to do the job. His advisors don't seem to be people who are there to give him options to choose from, they seem to have been chosen to be yes-men who are there to tell him how to make his plans work, even when everyone but Obama can see those plans never will.

As Dick Morris points out most of the people who are hitting Obama from the Left are Clinton advisors or at least supporters. These are people who don't act without Clintonian approval. There are rumors that Hillary is the one who forced Obama to bomb Libya and kill Bin Laden, making her seem like the decisive hero and him look weak. In a time when no one on either side of the political spectrum believes the official line they hear from the main stream media, a rumor carries a lot of credibility and believability. Morris says there's a really good chance Obama will do what Lindon Johnson did and make a televised statement saying he would not run for re-election. But that's what a typical politician would do and as you pointed out, Obama is too egotistical to do that.

That reminds me of a great blonde joke I know.

A blonde gets on an aircraft, and plops herself in the first seat in First Class. The flight attendant asks to see her ticket, which the blonde hands over. "I'm sorry ma'am, but you're going to have to move back to coach, this is the first class area of the aircraft, and your ticket is for coach".

To which the blonde replies, "I'm blonde, and I'm beautiful, and I'm going to New York First Class, because I deserve it!!!!". She refuses to budge.

The flight attendant gets the senior flight attendant, and explains the situation. The Sr. flight attendant goes over to the blonde, and patiently explains the ins and outs of first class versus coach, ticket prices, etc., and instructs the blonde to gather her belongings and go back to coach. To which the blonde replies, "I'm blonde, and I'm beautiful, and I'm going to New York First Class, because I deserve it!!!!", and defiantly refuses to move.

Not sure what move to make next, the senior flight attendant knocks on the cockpit door, explains the situation and informs the Captain that there's a dumb blonde in First Class who won't go sit where she belongs.  To which the Captain replies "No problem, I've got it".

He leaves the cockpit, calmly walks over to the blonde, leans over, and whispers in her ear.  She jumps up like a bat out of hell, grabs all of her stuff, and runs back to coach.  The Captain walks back over to the flight attendants, who are standing there in awe.

"What on earth did you say to her, Captain, to get her to move like that?".

"Easy", he said, "I told her First Class wasn't going to New York!".

You all have it wrong

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 1:15pm.

Been reading the previous comments, A lot of you guys have it wrong.  All the things you said about him being lazy or whatever, yeah, if he was an American, it would make sense.  But he's a communist, a marxist, and a muslim.   The only thing American about him is that he's ANTI-American.

As noted above in the NY Times comment, yes, he and the rest of his cohort communists are giving up the white collar worker, but not because he was lost in his befuddlement.  If he was befuddled about anything, it's why aren't more people embacing him and his socialist ideas.  He's not befuddled about implementing them.

He's been on a steady (and sometimes accellerated) course of destroying this country in so many ways, most notably by breaking the economy with thousands and THOUSANDS(!?!) of new regulations, taxes and more taxes through excessive spending and then extravagant(ridiculously so) vacations and parties.  To say he's been abusing his position is putting it mildly.  VERY mildly.

Get it through your heads, he's anything but incompetent.  Where Rush once said "I hope he fails," he has succeeded.  Many of us KNEW what he was up to from the outside, but so many others poo-poo'd the idea of that and said "oh, he doesn't know what he's doing, he's in over his head."

Guess what, he knows what he's doing and he's definitely not in over his head.  These are not the acts of someone incompetent.

Does he want to be re-elected?  I'm going to say no, he doesn't want to face election because people are finally(probably too late anyway at this point) figuring out he's bad news, but he's still doing whatever the hell he wants, and to hell with anyone who questions him on it.  How do I know this last part?  Witness Jake Tapper asking Carney about the taxpayer-funded campaign trips and Carney's rambling response(which he got called on for by another M/LSM co-hort) to it.  Even the Mainstream Media is starting to question him, and he's biting the hand that feeds him!

The damage has been done, it's too late now.  What's he going to be re-elected for when he's going to be king?  Until he's been focibly removed from office, I don't see him leaving of his own accord.  I will not change my mind of that belief unless he's gone.

I would add that Bambi is vapid, intellectually weak, borderline ignorant of all history except the rise of Communism and Fascism, and he does what his massa tells him. That would be George Soros, who I have always thought is the Wiz behind the curtain.

Soros has himself a subservient RBFSOB who will do what he is told without question because he knows that without the Wiz behind the curtain, he is NOTHING.

Soros is a totally ruthless bastard who wants to control the entire economy of the planet, or at least the controlling majority of it. He is in the driver's seat, and he will ride Bambi until he decides that he can't get it done any longer, and then he will not hesitate to take him out and replace him with another sock puppet.

Let's face it, he has plenty to choose from among America's liberal elite.

Or lack of, you're right, he is ignorant of a lot of things, which I would atribute to his background and upbrining as a muslim.

I remember reading somewhere that his grades weren't that good in college except in the ways of Islam, so some of the more basic stuff, he did really badly on.  But he could quote the Koran with the greatest of ease!

You're right about Soros, in this case, Soros is Palpatine, and I wouldn't equate Soetoro to Darth Vader, it's more like Governor Tarkin.  Tarkin had a huge ego.  Vader was redeemable in the end(yeah, I know it's a story by George Lucas, but the anaologies fit), Tarkin was not.

To my mind, the only Republican candidate standing is former Utah governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman. The Republican candidates are pathetic and by and large are irrelevant. By spring everyone, even the media dunderheads (I believe you are beginning to see this now) will know that the economy is finished (It's not that the media cares about the economy. It's that they care about their ideas)
Obama will be forced out of the race, or at the very least jettison the imbecile Biden for Clinton and SURE re-election.
This will most likely coincide with the absolute peak of the Republican candidacy. The only trick for the current administration is to pull it off with perfect timing so as to maximize the effect.
Just my gut feeling however.

Murray sentenced to 4 years

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:11pm.

I just got through watching the sentencing of Dr Murray, the doctor who accidently overdosed Michael Jackson.  He's only getting a max sentencing of 4 years because of a recent change in California state law, and the judge talking about it looks about as disgusted about the doctor's case and his limits of sentencing.  Apparently he won't even be in jail that long, maybe as much as a year.

He said the doctor's a danger to the community as a doctor, and there's nothing else the judge can do about it.  The change in the law occurred this year.

It might have been an accident, but it violated his oath as a doctor, he doesn't seem to care, and so on.  The judge basically said he's the worst kind of doctor and shouldn't be allowed to practice.  I couldn't watch anymore of this crap and left the room.(was watching it at work)

President - No way

Submitted by djm159 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:17pm.

Obama has no desire to be President, a term he associates with the peasants beneath him. Obama wants to be Dictator for Life just like his mentor and best bud - Hugo Chavez and the current President (Dictator of Iran). The democrat party has worked religiously to bring about a dictatorship at least for the last 20 years. Schoolchildren are now indoctrinated, not taught, and the underbelly of society, also known as Occupy Wall Street are a prime example of that. If Obama is not defeated in this upcoming election, America as we know and love it will cease to exist and we will be firmly ensconced in Marxism. Socialism is minor in comparison to what is being achieved today to promote Marxism. The unions need to be disbanded totally and then Richard Trumka will have to dig into his 283 million dollar net worth along with Steven Lerner, SEIU 65 million net worth and of course the occupy wall street sympathizers with fantastic net worth, i.e., Roseanne Barr 150 million, Sean Penn 150 million, Michael Moore 50 million, Alec Baldwin 50 million, Nancy Pelosi 27 million, Rosie O'Donnell 100 million, etc., etc. Are these the 99% or the 1%. The entire concept of Occupy Wall Street is bogus and is an attempt to destroy America, the greatest country on earth until Barack Obama took office. This takeover has been well planned by George Soros, and his ilk in an attempt to destroy the country, exactly as the 2006 takeover by the Democrats in Congress achieved their main goal of destroying President George Bush's legacy. Barack Obama has blamed Bush for everything since he took office nearly three years ago, when in reality the destruction was caused by the Democrat takeover. Defeat Obama at all costs and get rid of the Democrat Senate to save this country. Then get rid of the unions and stop making the Hoffa, jrs and Trumkas wealthy on the backs of blue collar workers. Stop the madness now, or pay for it in 2013 when it will then become too late to change it.

Submitted by merr4402 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 2:37pm.

It's interesting for a US Presidential Candidate to be campaigning for higher taxes, against balancing the budget (or even having a budget), for wasteful spending and against jobs (he just killed 120 thousand jobs).

Obama is even running against his own health care bill by granting waivers and allowing pieces of it to die off (long term care provisions).

He is running against fixing Social Security and is running for the shutting down of many Electric Power Plants by using the EPA.

It is a Strange Campaign indeed.

Since Dec 2008

Submitted by gwalt on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 3:00pm.

Since Dec 2008 when Hillary took SecState, I have remained convinced he only wanted one term. Way too much money waiting for him.
Why did Cankles take SecState? Why on earth would she leave cushy Senate controlled by Dems to travel to Botswana for photo ops? She hates Obama. He hates her.

What was the one thing lacking in Hillary's resume (like Odingo had any better) in 2008?
Foreign Policy.

Bingo----SecState----now has FP chops. Odingo campaigns, collects and collects then bails. John Kerry had 25 million left over in his campaign and kept it. Dare to ask for your money back and you are a racist.

Even Chrissy Tingles has heard they hate the WH (they hate everything American) and he is bored with Prez---he wants to be King of the World. Billions await Boy Blunder---

Petrobas
Unions
Trial Lawyers
Unions
Unions
Greenies
Commies
Soros

and did I mention Petrobas and the billions he gave them? My brother works with Petrobas as a customer. Odingo gave them much much more than what was reported (2 billion?). Closer to 20 billion or more. My bro said it was 200 billion that Petrobas claimed was basically donated, not loaned.

He won't wait around to cash in. I don't know what the magic number is---$250 million-----or a date close enough to turn to Hillary and say that he will step aside because we aren't smart enough to deserve him as Prez and we are racist to boot.

And bingo---another historic "first"---a woman president. Of course he will have to rally the blacks to her but billions await the first post-American prez. Billions!

I believe the plan all along was to step aside and throw her the nomination. No way in hell she is waiting until her age is in 70's to run.

He will be treated like royalty the rest of his life-----in his mind. I predict he will be tossed aside and no one, save academia, will want to hear him speak.

They're all from the same Kenyan Luo tribe.

Kinda like Chimpie MacHitler and Chimpy McHitler... the exact spelling is relatively meaningless considering the common ancestors and all.

Comrade Zero Doesn't Want the Job

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 3:03pm.

Let's face it...

Once a community organizer ALWAYS a community organizer ...

He spent 2 years in the Illinois Senate voting present.

He spent 1 year in the US Senate out-liberaling Ted Kennedy.

He was propped up as the Great Black Hope by Bill Ayers, and the guilt-ridden liberals lined up like lemmings to hurl themselves at his feet.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Presidency...

He found out his magic smile couldn't make the Conservatives cave.

He found out he didn't have the stomach for the job.

He found out he didn't know how to run a damned thing.

Go Home Barry.  Go back Where You Belong.  Into the Loving Arms of Jeremiah Wrong, and Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dorn.  Go back a try to figure out why you're so smart and everybody else is so dumb.

We don't want you, don't need you, can't stand you.

President Obama

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 3:15pm.

The energy required to get Obama back into office is something that is a short lived phenomena and we are way to early for his administration to start tapping that energy.  But do not worry too much about Obama because as he has done with all his policy ideas there will be a deferment to the Community Organizers to get him elected.  The new 'ACORN'and other such groups will be out in full force as the time draws nearer in an effort to get out the vote.

We know that intimidation will be allowed but maybe this time it will be in areas that are actually questionable to Obama's success.

Then there is the bottomless pocketbook that is the Obama Campaign fund.

And last and possibly most importantly is why should Obama get too worked up now since the media is handling things quite well?

over the prospect of having to participate in a presidential debate(s). His pitiful record and inability to speak coherently without a teleprompter should do the trick with anyone who is not a diehard Obama zombie.

In fact, I'm going to go record and predict he will find some way to get out of it. Some possible excuses:

• precipitating a national emergency (such as starting WWIII), an environmental catastrophe, or terrorist action.

• faking a serious health issue involving either himself or a family member.

Remember, he only has to avoid a debate for a very short window of two months after the (R) convention in August 2012. And the one and only thing he excels at is stonewalling and procrastinating, so this should be fairly easy for him to pull off. If he can't, he's toast.

Yes and no

Submitted by Model850 on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 4:04pm.

He wants to be reelected because he loves the idea of the presidency with all its attendant perks (as does MO), but he hates the idea of actually being president with all its attendant responsibilities.

Of course why wouldn't he hate that? He hasn't been held responsible for a single thing his entire life, which goes to explain his constant blaming of anything and everything but himself for his failures.

I think Obama wants to run, and Cain is the example

Submitted by TheHistorian on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 8:22pm.

What do Cain and Ryan have in common? They go up against Obama in a primary election for the other party and suddenly there are secrets exposed about them. As one person I heard said, "This has Axelrod's fingerprints all over it." If you go back, you will find that in virtually every election he has run in, someone has set up the stronger competitor to be destroyed. Axelrod is my guess, but he has big bucks behind him to help him do it. Anybody else guessing George Soros?

Why is it that all of the dirt on Obama and Rezko, Obama and Ayers, Obama and Wright, all just evaporated. Not that there wasn't something there, but no one was willing to come forward. What do we know about Obama's past life? Less than we have learned about Cain in about 3 months.

Hillary - sooner than we dare think

Submitted by deadeyedan on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 10:13pm.

The Iowa caucuses do not require ballots; you only have to state your preference to participate. The Hillary supporters there probably already know this and are licking their chops for a giant early primary season upset.

Just imagine if she pulls it off somehow and she makes an agreement with the ONE to allow her the next two terms during which time we all forget his transgressions and he, still "eligible" for another term, then takes over again in 2020.

Does that threat make you squirm or what?

McCain handing Obama another 4 years?

Submitted by lrgon on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 4:45pm.

John McCain just handed Obama a Public Relations brass ring.
http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_19413004

The "Indefinite detention" bill is so medieval in nature that some speculate that Obama will use his forecasted veto of the bill to build up his lagging image as defender of the "Bill of rights," to war-weary voters. Of course Obama could go back on his word to veto it and sign the unAmerican bill anyway. But, why veto when he already has been given the power by the GOP "leadership" to shoot any American he wants to shoot?

The "Indefinite detention" bill is a throw back to the ficticious medieval "rights of kings," that claimed to have the power handed to them by God; that they had the right to send innocent subjects down into dank dungeons never to be heard from again. The kings didn't have such right and the Founders of this nation cautioned us about surrendering legislative power to presidents that lust for war to build a power base for themselves. They went the extra mile to enshrine a sacred Bill of Rights to protect forever the God-given rights to a trial and the "due process" provisions which they enumerated with Amendments 4 thru 8. Ignored by McCain and Levin who completely forgot to check with what the Federalist Papers say about presidential powers.

To "conservatives" like McCain, trials and habeas Corpus are outmoded relics of 18th century thinking. But the fact is that McCain and his partners in crime didn't learn a thing from history:

Those that checked us all into the Hanoi Hilton: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2011-375
