Open Thread: CNN's GOP Debate
Last night, CNN, the Heritage Foundation, and AEI hosted the eleventh GOP debate of the campaign, this time on the topic of national security. Some of the biggest disagreements came with questions on the Patriot Act, immigration, and foreign aid. Did you watch the debate? Check out video highlights after the break, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Didn't watch it. DOOK played Meeechigan last night. Watched that and forgot about this stuff. I want a debate where the canidates ask each other questions. Can't stand Wolfie. I am like Cam Edwards. When are they going to ask a question on Fast and Furious?
I did not watch the debate.

I've caught bits of them here and there, but I can't sit through an entire program. They aren't really debates. They are info-mercials.
The GOP thought it would be clever by holding having others sponsor the 13 some-odd debates, thus permitting even the smallest fund-raiser to get some media exposure without spending precious $$$.
But the whole process had turned into a circus, with MSMers trying to get their 'gotcha' question in and even dueling with the candidates. Meanwhile, the candidates keep repeating their campaign bullets debate after debate.
Ironically, the arduous process has failed to develop a clear leading candidate. Gingrich is on top now, but he follows Bachmann, Perry, and Cain.
Two debates would've done the job. The first one on domestic policy; the second on foreign policy and security.
They aren't debates. They are photo ops.

No one is asked speciic questions about thier underlying values and beliefs that they would fall back on for decisions in situations that are not forseeable. That is the key to figuring out who would make a better President. Not who has been breifed on talking points and can rattle off policy statements that they have memorized.

I finally finished watching the whole thing yesterday....I must say, it was rather well done, and insightful.
After watching it, I think all of the people at the table (and the ABSENCE of the Mormon Romney and Huntsman was even more conspicuous due to much of the subject matter)....I have to say, I see THE core of a great next republican administration. My first pick is Michelle Bachmann, to replace Kathleen Sebilius as Secretary of HHS. Better yet, sweep the (R) leadership out of the House (with the exception of Paul Ryan)....and put Bachmann in a lead role.
There is still something about Rick Perry that just rubs me the wrong way....but I have to love him a bit...his "story", about college...
"I wanted to be a veteranarian, but then I met organic chemistry". I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! He stole my story!
THAT is exactly what happened to me. Too funny.
Thanks again for the link....for those of you who haven't watched this debate...it is so head and shoulders above all of the other ones....just to give you insight into the people behind the politicians. Good stuff, and well worth the time.

Dick Morris claims that CNN debate was some sort of plot

to make John Huntsman and Ron Paul look good.
Dick Morris, the famous toe sucker, claims that CNN stacked the deck, plotted or somehow conspired to embarrass the Republican Party by giving John Huntsman and Ron Paul all the attention at the American Enterprise Institute and Heritage Foundation sponsored debate aired by CNN cable.
Rick Santorum embarrassed himself as he tried to act clever when he stated: "I agree with Ron Paul - terrorism is a tactic." The he proceeded to make a fool of himself by bragging about his role in congress as a leader of the foreign aid giveaway programs that are totally unconstitutional. Talk about an embarrassment to the party!
Newt was and is an embarrassment to the GOP with his playing environmental footsie of another sort with left wingers like Nancy from San Francisco. Newt played patty fingers with "Slick willy" when the two worked hand and glove to pass the job-killing NAFTA over fellow Republicans' objections. Then there is the biggest embarrassment of this year's GOP insiders: Mitt.
"Obamneycare" was how one fellow Republican described Mitt's socialized medical plan in Massachusetts. Romneycare was the forerunner of Obamacare and according to Dick Morris Romney is not a "nut" as he accuses Ron Paul of being.
But with Mr. Morris' "true confessions" that he enjoys sucking toes one can understand why Dick Morris is so confused with the proper Constitutional role of congress in dealing with foreign nations. http://www.pensitoreview.com/2007/05/01/is-toe-sucking-dick-morris-in-dc...
Mr.Morris wants us to get in bed with dictators while Paul and, Huntsman, to a lesser degree, want to bring the troops home and not meddle in foreign governments' internal affairs, which according to American Enterprise Institutute "visiting scholar" Paul Wolfowitz is what inspires the al-Qaeda terrorists to attack us.
Morris makes tons of money providing his toe sucking commentary at Fox News. Fox has been suckered by the former Clinton buddy that invents irresponsible conspiracy theories and tries to pass them off as legitmate commentary.

R- Debate (11/22/11) “The Official Grump-Analysis”
Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 2:08pm.
Source: “The Grumpy Center for Advanced Studies (GCAS)”
Motto of the GCAS: “There ain’t no beans in real chili… period!”
OVERVIEW: This was the “SERE” (Survival, Rescue, Escape, & Evasion) debate… with the emphasis on Evasion.
This CNN debate on “National Security and Foreign Policy Issues” was held at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. and was noteworthy because the vast majority of the excellent questions were asked by notable representatives and Fellows from both the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute.
THE MODERATOR/QUESTIONER: Wolf Blitzer was the “moderator” and did his usual best to get the candidates arguing among themselves, but because the questions from Heritage and AEI were so well formulated, Blitzer was somewhat thwarted in his efforts… not that he didn’t give it “the old CNN try.”
The debate was run according to the usual CNN rules… One minute response and 30 seconds for rebuttal – all the candidates lined-up in a row behind podiums in order of who CNN thinks are the major contenders (for show) and questions directed to those candidates that CNN would like to see run against their beloved “The Won” (as a practical matter).
It was actually quite obvious (and shameless) that CNN devoted a great deal of time to Ron Paul and Huntsman – followed by Santorum, Bachman, and Perry – while doing their CNN best to avoid questions to Romney, Gingrich and Cain.
PARTICIPANT ANALYSIS: As said in the ‘Overview; this debate’s primary emphasis (by the candidates) seemed to be on “evading” the questions asked and answering in pre-formulated “sound-bites” … or just down out attempts to change the subject.
So I’m going to list the ‘winners and losers’ of those who (IMO) gave direct and thoughtful answers to the actual questions asked:
1. Newt Gingrich – He was the clear winner of this debate... no one else came close. He did make one “perceived” mistake that a few of the other candidates jumped-on when discussing illegal immigration (and the illegal’s already here)… But if you go back and review his answer, I think you might find that he was merely searching for a solution that would solve the problem while conforming to the value system of the American people.
2. Rick Perry – Regarding the evasion principle, he seemed open and straightforward and did not try to employ the technique of going off on a tangent. A lot of his answers were shallow and did reflect talking points… but he on a couple of occasions tried to bring the discussion back to the basics of the questions – So for that he gets a second place finish.
3. Michele Bachmann – She did a very good job last night. Her answers were mostly “on point,” but she does have a tendency to try to position herself as a ‘strategic thinker’ while she is actually more of a ‘tactical’ one …Now, there is nothing wrong with that per se, and while she did a good job in the debate, it is becoming obvious that she would make a fine Administrator, but not necessarily a great Leader.
4. Herman Cain – I would have liked to see the “Herminator” do better than he did. Mr. Cain’s problem is just the opposite of Bachman’s… he is a primarily ‘strategic thinker’ with a set of guiding principles about how to solve problems but does not answer the ‘tactical’ questions well. Because of his openness about how he would solve problems (a look into his thought process, if you will allow) I rate his performance slightly better than his overall answers.
5. Mitt Romney – He really didn’t get the amount of ‘air-time’ he deserved (based on the polls) but what little he got he used to effectively make himself appear to be the paragon of conservatism – which is a bald-faced lie on his part. He gave ‘stock’ answers based upon (I suspect) what the audience wanted to hear. While he did attempt to answer some of the questions directly, I suspect he missed his calling in life – he would make a great ‘Pea-shell artist.’
6. Rick Santorum – As 1 of 100 - He made a great Senator. He did try to answer the questions asked, but kept falling back on his “When I was in the Senate” routine, and his whining that he is not being allotted enough time during these debates is getting old... he really doesn’t get enough time, so his complaint might be legitimate – but for goodness sakes, stop with the “Pay attention to me” thing.
7. Ron Paul – I honestly do not know what to say about this crazy-man. He has a 18th Century view of America and does not realize that we are no longer living in an agrarian society that just wants to be left alone (as we were when starting off). He does not seem to understand that there are people in the world who want to kill us. He wants to abandon our responsibilities in the world and crawl back into a safe little cocoon that simply does not exist. The solutions he offers and his worldview are really scary and I wish he would just go back to venting in a Congressional ‘nightly open forum’ where nobody has to listen to him.
8. Jon Huntsman – This guy is simply running in the wrong party. Not a single answer he gave was germane to the question raised… His solutions are banal and his ‘love fest’ with some very liberal ideas simply do not reflect the real world we live in. RNC: Stop inviting this guy to the debates – he is just a waste of time!

Submitted by lrgon on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 5:37pm.
The media lashes out at anyone attempting to do any budget cutting and even the slightest spending cuts are countered back by demands for more taxes to be increased instead.
A lesson to learn from our friends to the north on how they cut spending and have what they refer to as a "payoff decade."
In the 1990's the Canadian Reform Party was, or could, be referred to as the Tea Party of that country and they didn't let the policians get away with rhetoric but made them make real cuts not cuts ot a "projected model" decades off in the future.
In the USA calls for real budgetary reform by the Tea Party is drowned by the noise from the establishment Republicans unwilling to do any serious cutting or ignoring those who do. Even the recent downgrade of the country’s debt by Standard and Poor’s appears to be having little effect or impact on the conversation in Washington. The willingness to endure the pain of the necessary cuts is nowhere to be found. The “payoff decade” for the United States appears to be in the distant future.
Listening to the debaters last night the only ones willing cut military outlays was Paul and Huntsman, all the rest are under the illusion that we can afford to keep wasting money of useless Obama-type foreign wars which are a detriment to our national defense.

GOP Debate
Submitted by LionKing on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 6:33pm.
I liked what Newt had to say, even about immigration.
There is no reason to be heartless to established families -- make them resident aliens, not citizens.
If they have committed a crime or have no established connection, send them back.
I thought Cain did well when given a chance.
I thought his answer on cyber-security was insightful.
I thought Perry did well. Bachmann and Santorum did well also -- just cannot get excited about them.
I was impressed with how well-spoken and informed Romney appeared -- I just do not trust him.
My dream ticket right now is Cain/Gingrich -- businessman with non-politician politician.
Ron Paul is TOO dismissive on national security and drugs -- drugs destroy lives.
Can someone explain why Huntsman calls himself a Republican? -- I can see why the liberal media love him.
Don't you love it when conservatives use liberal talking points?
Submitted by ckc1227 on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 8:54pm.
There is no reason to be heartless to established families -- make them resident aliens, not citizens.
Should we cue the violins for your sad, heart wrenching attempt to tug at our heart strings with your emotionally charged argument? You've pretty much made an argument against enforcing every law on the books, and against ending a single entitlement program, and against reducing spending by a single dollar.
"Ron Paul is TOO dismissive on national security and drugs -- drugs destroy lives."
I guess next you'll be telling us we need more gun control because guns destroy lives.
I used to consider Paul a nut job because of his foreign policy views, and still do for the most part, but I might have to consider re-thinking that. If we have no interest in addressing the invasion that's occurring right under our noses, does it really matter what Iran is doing? That would be no. Either way, we're headed for destruction.
Can someone explain why Huntsman calls himself a Republican?
Maybe you should ask yourself why Newt calls himself a Republican, considering he shares many liberal positions with Obama, such as:
-global warming
- amnesty for illegals
-a national health care mandate
And let's not forget Newt is a serial adulterer, which isn't exactly a sign of character, honesty and integrity.

The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental human right of self-defense. Recreational drugs serve no useful function, and their possession and use is most certainly not a right.

I was commenting on the debate.
I liked what Newt had to say about illegal immigration.
Did I say anything about GUN CONTROL? -- I am actually VERY conservative.
Legalization of drugs is a libertarian position, not a conservative. DRUGS do destroy lives.
As I said, I would be very happy with Cain for president and Newt for VP -- perfect, probably not,
but good enough to RIGHT this country. The 2 of them have the COURAGE.
Ron Paul would be TOTALLY unsuccessful as president. He isn't even considered a leader in the house and
all of his efforts in the house FAIL. If you want to be a legal pot-head, move to Kalifornia -- good luck keeping a
job. The fact is just because marijuana is legal does not imply that employers have to hire or retain employees
that smoke it.
Fer-real cornbread dressing is a PITA to make
Submitted by Dave. on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 7:36pm.
First you have to make the cornbread.
Then you have to let it cool.
Then you have to chop up a lot of onions, celery, and since I'm making it, garlic.
Then you have to crumple up the cornbread, add the onions, celery, garlic, more eggs, some half & half (heavy cream is even better), chicken stock, salt, pepper, and some rubbed sage, and mix it all up.
Then you have to put it back in the pans and bake it like, forever and an hour.
And while I'm in the midst of all that, I am also working on tonight's dinner, which involves a pork loin roast I have smoking with apple wood out back on the grill.
LOL - Needless to say, the damn turkey is going to have to wait until in the morning.

My pearl onions are peeled, and carmelized. The bird is brining (Alton). I had to go to 3 stores to find the allspice berries which, en espanol, are called pimienta de dulce. (A bargain at $1).
All of the dressing accoutrements are prepped, sausage, celery, water chestnuts, onions...the cranberry sauce it done. The peas are shucked, the potatoes are ready, the brussels are cleaned and ready to be roasted, the green beans are waiting as well. Pumpkin pie is in the fridge, a new batch of vanilla ice cream ready to go in the a.m., as, of course, is the whipped cream.
Table is (mostly) set, I'm feeling in control. Which is funny, I haven't done the "real" Thanksgiving for about twelve years (usually it is stone crabs and key lime pie).
So quitcher whinin' Dave, and enjoy that pork loin.....Catch ya'll on the manana! Bon appetit.

If you're grateful for their victories

get on your knees and pray
In this world of grief and sorrow
filled with selfishness and greed

You can find it in the temple
with a welcome on the door
be sure to count your blessings
before you ask for more
Be forgiving to the wayward
