NB Publisher Bozell to Networks: Stop Your Assault On GOP Presidential Candidates

By NB Staff | September 26, 2011 | 14:58

Update: Click here to make your voice heard!

NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell has issued a letter  to the heads of NBC, CBS, and ABC television networks calling on them to end their bias against GOP presidential hopefuls in their reporting and interviewing.

The MRC recently released an analysis of 53 weekday morning show interviews with either potential or declared Republican candidates from January 1 through September 15, and compared the results with our study of the same programs’ treatment of the Democratic candidates during the same time period from four years ago. The analysis revealed, among other things, that by a 5-to-1 margin, ABC, CBS and NBC morning show hosts employed an adversarial liberal agenda when questioning this year’s Republican candidates.

This latest proof of blatant bias has prompted a letter from Bozell to each of the network heads which reads in part:

This is thorough, well documented research. Among other data, the research shows that by a 5-to-1 margin, ABC, CBS and NBC morning show hosts have employed an adversarial liberal agenda when questioning this year’s Republican candidates. It is completely different from the treatment these same shows accorded Democratic primary challengers in 2007. . . Viewers are tuning out in droves because they are sick and tired of such undeniable bias.

You can find the full analysis here.

I think the candidates should reject the liberal premise to nearly every question. I have been meaning to contact Paul Ryan and give him a piece of my mind for adopting the liberal language. He mentioned "paid for" as if our money is all the gov'ts' so for us to keep some of it....it must be paid for!

Mr. Bozell, all you can do is try, but I won't hold my breath that these liberal idiots will do what you suggest. It's truly sad.

The New York liberal media

Submitted by deerjerkydave on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 3:32pm.

The New York liberal media desperately need to protect their investment and dear leader, Barack Obama. Especially since polls showing him failing miserably in swing states like Florida.

Maybe I am alone in this, but....

Submitted by Ashrak on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 3:36pm.

I don't want media to end being adversarial, I just want them to stop being that way toward one group of people while licking the boots of another group and ignoring altogether other groups.

Playing devil's advocate is part, imho, of what investigative journalism is all about. Questioning with boldness must not stop at a party line, nor should it be based on one. It should be grounded in facts and questions that arise because of known facts, in search of more facts.

I just want to see media, for once in my life, just tell the straight up honest to goodness TRUTH.

The media's job is not to be "adversarial"...

Submitted by USMC8411 on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 4:51pm.

The media's job is to REPORT the facts, without editorializing them or journalizing them, Ashrak. The change from reporting to journalistic editorials came after the power Cronkite demonstrated to press how to propagandize an issue: Following Cronkite’s editorial report during the Tet Offensive that the Vietnam War was unwinnable, President Lyndon Johnson (*spit*) is reported to have said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost Middle America.”

NOTE: "editorial report" was the precursor of "journalism!"

Slowly the MSM injected their anti-American agenda into the stories that they editorialized. They became journalists and abandoned factual reporting in order to advance the agenda.

Investigative journalism is a fraud. Investigative reporting is not. The former tells you what to think about the issue/agenda presented. The latter compels you to make up your own mind, based on the facts presented and any further research those facts may entice you to do.

I think that is what you were trying to say in your second paragraph, however, journalists in the obama camp will NEVER question him with boldness. Chris Matthews and Sharpton have publicly declared their intent to give him a pass.

"That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate." Which "policy positions" are you referring to?

"We elected obama, and he destroyed the Middle Class!"

One way, I would argue the best way, to get to the actuality based facts is by asking the tough questions. Today's media asks softballs of some, sitting them on tee, while contriving full false premise for anyone not lock step with that softball side. My intent was to relay the reality that tough questions of true substance, seeking actually true answers of substance in conjunction must be asked of all sides. To those trying to hide those answers, questioners will always be deemed adversarial. I shun the idea that a role reversal of what he have now ends up being beneficial.

Investigative journalism and reporting is on display for all to see around the net, my friend. GunWalker is an outstanding example of it.

The 'policy position' that it refers to directly the most is the right to keep and bear arms, as in, what I endure here in Illinois is unjust and unconstitutional (the total ban on carrying firearms in case of confrontation for the purpose of self defense). It is a similar statement to what Scalia wrote in Heller. I like it and understand that such a statement must apply to all inalienable rights, not just the Second Amendment. SO rather than quote it directly and give the impression that is all it means, I change it just a bit. So while it applies to one thing directly as an answer to your question, it applies to many things, a great many things.

If yer sniffin' for progressive trolls rhetorically, you are barking up the wrong tree, friend. A strict constructionist am I with Individual Liberty as the focus of all things government was instituted to observe, respect, protect and defend.

Have a nice day.

P.S. Les and less are in "his" camp daily and embarrassment is setting in more than ever before. That is a very very good thing.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

I believe that "fair minded American" should have been thrown in!

The media outlet propagandists threw the letter in the circular file. There is no room for truth when an agenda has to be proposed, advanced, and supported by any and all means possible.

Asking the MSM to be truthful is akin to asking a tiger to change its stripes.

The only tiger I know of that has accomplished that impossible scenario was the Great Reynauldus Maximus. Technically, the stripes left him!

It's outrageous that they would ask more adversarial questions

Submitted by mayor on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 5:22pm.

of this year's GOP candidates than the candidates for the Democratic party! Oh wait! there is only one person running for the Democratic Party nomination this year but seven or eight(?) on the GOP side. that would seem to mean that they have seven or eight more times the candidates to cover. Perhaps this is just more whining and victim playing by the GOP. As usual.

Yes.

Prone to twist, turn inside out and upside down relative the truth?

Absolutely !

Desirous of putting forth liberal or Democratic Party propaganda disguised as concerns for the betterment of all?

Indubitably.

Vapid in regard to dealing with the inherent truths related to both the interior and exterior tenets, workings, and spread of Islam?

Decidedly.

Willing to lie, cheat and steal in order to further the cult of Obama while printing race cards faster than the government is printing money, and then flicking those racial inanities at anyone and everyone who will not kneel to their god?

Obscenely so.

Do a "hate count"

Submitted by tribchet on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 6:26pm.

Not many watch MSNBC but I occasionally turn there to see just how outrageous their rhetoric is getting. Chris Matthews must have associated "HATE" with "REPUBLICAN" a dozen times (OK maybe not quite a dozen but it was a bunch). He gets a lot of "ANGRY's" in there too but the "HATE" obsession seems especially dangerous. It appears he's insinuating racism most of the time.

Here's my challenge to NewsBusters: Prove me wrong on my estimates on how often Chris used the word "HATE" and the number of times he associated it with "REPUBLICAN" in today's episode of Hardball. Keep a "HATE COUNT" on MSNBC and compare it to other networks if need be.

Using hate and dividing this country is MSNBC's constitutionally protected right for sure but borders on sedition in my opinion and has no redeeming value. If their intent is to re-elect their man then do it on the merits. Someone needs to hold them acccountable.

Boycott the MSM

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 6:36pm.

I have been boycotting the MSM since before it was known as the MSM. It started with CBS when Dan Rather got caught lying -- the first time.

Then I stopped watching ABC when Peter Jennings appeared in a commercial claiming that they would only tell the truth -- de facto acknowledgement that they had a problem telling the truth.

I stopped watching CNN at 5:30pm PDT on 9/11/2001 when Wolf Blitzer blamed Bush for the destruction of the World Trade Towers.

Since I am myself mainstream, despite my chosen moniker, I am sure there are tens of millions of like-minded citizens. Here's hoping tens of millions more will join the boycott.

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 6:52pm.

Seems like there ought to be enough conservatives to form an investor collective to buy up controlling interest in news media companies. They should be plenty cheap right now that they are on the brink of bankruptcy. Afterall, that's what GE and Soros have been doing, sort of like Citizen Kane.

Just a notion to think about.

Was there a letter to CNN?

Submitted by Mike Bratton on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 7:02pm.

Or analysis of that network?

Or is Brent still trying to curry favor?

Not to be repetitive, but Brent used CNN.com to do to Christine O'Donnell what the MRC-mentioned networks do to GOP hopefuls.

And O'Donnell's not even running for public office these days.
