Open Thread: Romney, Perry, Bachmann, and Paul All in Close Race With Obama

By NB Staff | August 23, 2011 | 10:34

A  A

Contrary to the media myth that none of the Republican presidential candidates can beat President Obama next fall, a new Gallup poll suggests that the top four GOP candidates would actually all have close races with Obama if the election were held today.

Mitt Romney polled 2% above Obama, 48% to 46%, Rick Perry was tied with Obama, at 47%, Ron Paul lagged polled 2% below Obama, 45% to 47%, and Michele Bachmann polled 4% below Obama, 44% to 48%. What do you think of the latest poll results? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

According to Gallup's research,

Democratic and Republican registered voters display strong allegiance for their party's candidate across these election match-ups. Democrats are the most consistent, voting for Obama to about the same degree regardless of who the GOP candidate is. Republicans exhibit a little more variation, giving their strongest support to Perry (92% would vote for him) and Romney (91%), weaker support to Bachmann (86%), and the weakest support to Paul (82%). Independents tilt at least slightly toward voting for Romney, Perry, and Paul against Obama, while tilting slightly toward Obama when he is pitted against Bachmann.

Furthermore, this poll surveyed only registered voters and adults, segments which generally tend to be more liberal than likely voters. This could indicate an even more promising election for the GOP next fall. Without huge differences among any of the top four candidates compared to Obama, what do you think this means for 2012?

Ron paul is a pathetic candidate followed by fringe Isolationist

Submitted by cbeyer on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 3:23pm.

Ron Paul has no chance of winning the Republican nomination. His second place showing in Iowa was just a straw poll and was meaningless. There are many reasons why Ron Paul is a terrible candidate starting with the fact that he is a nutcase. Here are some key areas that would be impenetrable roadblocks to Paul being the Republican standard bearer.

National Defense: Most republicans and conservatives support a strong national defense and the war against Islamic Extremism. Paul's comments in the last debate advocating the right of Iran to have nuclear weapons is nothing short of idiocy. Iran has repeatedly called for the obliteration of the State of Israel and has made many threats against America. Beyond adding a dangerous state to the list of Nuclear weaponized countries, Iran is known to be a world wide exporter of and supporter of terrorism. Isolationism as an approach to Iran is just plain wrong.

Legalization of drugs: A strong advocate of legalizing drugs places Paul at odds with most conservatives and republicans.

Hair brained positions: Ron Paul was an early advocate of the belief that 911 could have been an 'inside job' rather than as the result of Islamic Terrorists. He has never fully renounced that belief in spite of overwhelming and irrefutable evidence (including Osama Bin Laden and other Islamists having taken credit for 911) that this was and Al Qaida) operation.

While his strong constitutionalist principals are admirable, this Quirky guy is unelectable as either the standard bearer for the Republican party and even more so in the broad electorate as a presidential candidate. Clearly he does have, however, a very loyal group of fringe followers.

"A tribute to racial co-operation or an insult? Martin Luther King memorial was made in China"

"He is an American icon who will be the first non-U.S. president to be honoured on the National Mall when his memorial is dedicated on Sunday.

But the huge granite tribute to Martin Luther King Jr is raising eyebrows after it was revealed that it was made in China.

The giant 30ft statue is the work of Lei Yixin, a 57-year-old master sculptor from Changsha in Hunan province."

I am looking forward to the primaries!

Submitted by drsamherman on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 9:39pm.

Finally there is some real contrast in the nominees, which is good and bad.

The lefties will ultimately unite behind Ear Leader because they are brainless automatons who will follow whatever their programmers tell them. Perhaps one or two of them will be bold enough to mount a primary challenge, but in the end they have no viable alternatives. They have not bothered to groom any candidates for plan B. They are already brandishing the race card, the combo-pack of anti-everything and Blame Bush version infinity. Dimwit Debbie took ownership of the economy. Fathead Ed shot his mouth off enough to keep the "ignorant jackass" label until doomsday. Nancy Pelosi enjoys the same popularity nationally as H1N1 influenza. Ear Leader jumps ship whenever the going gets tough so he can present another hollow, vague speech of tired platitudes and blueprint for inaction. They also have unemployment, Supreme Court challenge of Obamacare and widening investigation of the gun running operation.

The GOP will need to get its act together and choose a nominee who will not compromise on conservative principles or be unable to present coherent ideas to voters.

Libya fighting

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 11:34am.

You know, yesterday the way all the news media put it(except Fox News and I'll explain why in a moment), the Libyan rebellion was over and the rebels won.  Fox News had John Bolton on there and he correctly predicted what's happening in that the fighting isn't really over.  I think Ollie North said some similar things as well plus the mention of the Muslim Bro'Hood.

But no, the fighting is still going on, just as crazy as before.  And turns out one or both of his sons might not be captured after all, but who the hell knows, trying to get information about what's going on is chaotic at best.

So here's what I'm hoping and this might sound cruel, but the alternative is worse.  I'm hoping that they will keep the fighting going on between Qadaffi and what's left of his military versus the rebels.  I'm hoping that the rebels will fight among themselves for the spoils.  I hope they lay waste to each other on a large scale that will have casualties on both sides that will take them YEARS to sort out.  Some of you might say "why would you want something like this?"  Because here's the worse alternative, the Muslim Brotherhood gets its claws in another country and institute Sharia, which is their ultimate desire.

Yeah, Qadaffi wasn't exactly a "friend" to the US, hell, he's a murdered a la Lockerbie and that son of a bitch bomber who should have died is getting Western treatment, but Qadaffi was easily controllable(relatively speaking).  A country that's Sharia controlled is automatically an enemy to any country and individual who's not of Islam.  It's their way or die and that makes them the worse alternative.

At some point, they are going to glass each other (for those of you in Rio Linda, that means nukes used in deserts, high heat turns sand into glass) and they'll kill each other out of existence.  One can hope.

Check out the results.

Regardless of the outcome, it doesn't change the fact that Soetoro through NATO engaged in complicity with the terrorists who are a large part of what's going on.  Just like he did with them in Egypt and elsewhere.

We are gearing up for a strike from Hurricane Irene early Saturday morning.  Right now they say it maybe a cat 3. Mandatory evacuations have been order for tourist along the outer banks starting tomorrow at 5:30 AM and residents beginning Thursday. Seem like when  we make these preparations nothing ever happens. They are saying it will still be a category 1 when it hits around the Chesapeake Bay area on Sunday so you can get ready for some wind and rain. The Marines at Cherry Point will probably start flying their aircraft out tomorrow.  I look for the Navy to take the ships out to sea that are now docked at Norfolk and start to fly the aircraft out of Oceania Thursday.

Each time the local weather has come on since yesterday they have pushed it a bit further east. As of the 5 o'clock news the eye would go over the outer banks. That would put us on the west side where the winds and rain are the strongest. Hurricane forecasting is not an exact science so we don't where it is going until about Thursday. They are already moving high school football games in this area back to Thursday night.

Polls mean nothing before the General election

Submitted by gopcongress on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 3:54pm.

Polls pitting primary candidates against the general candidate from the other party are meaningless. The problem is that the primaries properly focus on the difference the candidates within the SAME party display, who for the MOST part have greater fundamental differences with the opposite party. In addition, there is a dilution of support for primary candidates that the opposite party candidate is not subject to.

Finally, keep in mind that Reagan was polled during the 1980 GOP primary to losing to Carter 75% to 25% behind some of the other candidates at the time. When he won the primary, he was polled at a significantly lower percentage than Carter until shortly before the election, even with the crap that Carter was overseeing with regard to Iran, the economy, etc.

So polls mean nothing in themselves. What a poll represents is the ability for the democratic PR firm...er, the mainstream press to SHAPE the news based on the "results" of polls. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

I'm trying to establish some street cred here as the conservative Mr. Blackwell, if you don't mind!

*Ahem*

Let me show you how it's done, young Jedi.

Mrs. Won lost big in the style race last night, as she forgot to strap on a patented Klingon Death Belt.  Furthermore, Lady M is going to hear it for those SLAVE EARRINGS. They're racist, you know. Oh wait! SHE wore them, so it's not racist...I swear, it's all so confusing.

MO did wear her hair tightly pulled back in her "nub" look, which helps keep the scowl pulled back and off her face.  Plastic smiles all around for The Wons as they try to appear to be having such great fun at our expense.

By the bye, rumor has it her recent disappearance has something to do with a mysterious plastic surgery procedure or two.  Will the media give her the Bristol Palin treatment?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Not bad, Mr. B...

Perhaps a mention of the smartly accented pearl white tie line used to keep the increasingly meandering 'Joe the Veep' in tow?

If the election were held today....

it would be about fifteen months too soon.

That pretty much sums up the value of polls conducted this far out.
