Open Thread: Does the Environmental Agenda Have Parallels to Communism?
Global warming, aka climate change, is the scapegoat for everything from record snowfalls to disastrous tornadoes. As such, it is also the perfect route for governments to closely control their citizens by regulating the smallest of details, like which lightbulbs they are allowed to use, to supposedly fix the problem.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who grew up under totalitarian rule, is speaking out against what he sees as the latest government attack on democratic freedom, environmentalism, which he argues closely parallels the thefts of freedom under communism. Do you agree with him? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Earlier this week, both Klaus and Australian Greens party senator Christine Milne spoke in Australia on global warming, offering a clear juxtaposition between their two ideologies.
As Klaus explained in his speech to a group of climate change realists,
I feel threatened now, not by global warming -- I don't see any -- (but) by the global warming doctrine, which I consider a new dangerous attempt to control and mastermind my life and our lives, in the name of controlling the climate or temperature. [...]
They don't care about resources or poverty or pollution.
They hate us, the humans. They consider us dangerous and sinful creatures who must be controlled by them.
I used to live in a similar world called communism. And I know it led to the worst environmental damage the world has ever experienced.
[Global warming alarmists] want to change us, they want to change our behaviour, our way of life, our values and preferences. They want to restrict our freedom because they themselves believe they know what is good for us. They are not interested in climate. They misuse the climate in their goal to restrict our freedom. Therefore ...what is in danger is freedom, not the climate.
While he sees clear parallels between the erosion of freedoms associated with global warming legislation, Milne's speech instead drew parallels between anti-carbon tax Australians peacefully protesting to the crazed Norwegian gunman, Anders Breivik, and called for an investigation of those in the media who were also anti-carbon tax.
Klaus argued politicians globally, like Milne, are attempting to ignore and silence their critics in favor of greater power and control over them through green laws. Do you agree with him?

This is why the agenda is the main goal of any public screwel in this Country. That goal is even higher than the homosexual agenda drilled into the children. Brainwashing the children and telling them that mother earf is more sensitive than the parents of the children. They cause children to not trust their parents.
The threat after WWII and through the Cold War was that we would be destroyed from the inside, after many years... And it is happening.

Communism - A Lying, Dirty, Shrewd, Godless, Murderous, Determined, International Criminal Conspiracy that sounds remarkably similar to “The Environmental Movement.”
Slightly off-topic: It is predicted to be 111 degrees where I live today.
My personal take is: “The communists/socialists/environmentalists tell me, to set the thermostat at 80 degrees to save energy – A Capitalist will find a way to deliver more energy, at a cheaper cost, so I can set the thermostat to 75.“

It has little to do with the issue that they bring up as a "crisis", it has everything to do with controlling the masses and deciding who gets to use resources and how much.
This is just progressivism that has hijacked meteorology and climatology for it's use. The underlying premis is that there are those really smart and sophisticated elites who understand how everything works together and they should be making the decisions for all. It is the old "planning" ideology that springs out of Marxism and refuses to be silenced even when there is tons of empiracle data that it doesn't work. Why doesn't it work? There are two primary reasons:
1) Humans are not anywhere near smart enough to understand how everything fits together and interacts.
2) Humanity is loaded with corrupt and immoral members who gravitate toward positions of power so they can bennefit themselves at the expense of everyone else.
So because of reason #1, the decisions will always be flawed and the unintended consequenses will range from annoying to catastrophic. Because of reason #2, the desicions will over-time become about benefitting a small group of elites and not the general populace as a whole.
This is why Communism / Socialism always devolves to dictatorship and always fails miserably. It is unsustainable.
Regardless of whether there is a change in climate, or we are witnessing a simple cyclical perturbation, the attempt to control the climate by way of restricting the energy use of advanced nations will fail and it will lead to catastrophic consequenses if it is tried.
The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is less than 1% of the total. The amount of CO2 that humans contribute to the atmosphere on a yearly basis is less than 0.003% of that. The analogy is that if we all stood on the shore and pissed into the sea at once, we could affect the tides. The whole idea is patently absurd and actually shows the arrogance of the global warming proponents.
Madison and Jefferson and Franklin built a Republic - Roberts killed it!

Submitted by stratman on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 11:14am.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus' belief that Environmentalism is a form of Communism has been known in American political and business circles since at least early 2007. Even before this, I recall reading how various environmental groups were hijacked by extremists many years ago, such as Green Peace and nutjob Robert F. Kennedy, Jr's and friends taking over the Hudson river environmental group Riverkeeper - both entities have been criticized by former members for the extreme swings in positions after Leftists took control.
Charles Krauthammer and Rush Limbaugh have both discussed the communistic methodologies of Environmentalism back in 2008. So, this is not a new revelation at all, but it is important to refresh people's minds on the Left's Marxist ideological purity in their activism no matter the names they adopt or the patina of Americana tradition they try to fool people with.
And if the warnings of the above are not enough to give one pause on the subject, how about the Left exposing their Marxism proudly for all to see as in the following article from treehugger.com called "6 Green Lessons We Can Learn From Communism". These people are not only fools, they are dangerous fools.

He stated this in the early nineties on his show, barely 4 years old at the time. It is precisely what is happening. Environmentalism is pushing to promote the socialist control of individual's lives through the criminalization of capitalist endeavors.

Suddenly all these new guys are linguini spined after all? Allen West seems to be flipping? Paul Ryan seems to be flipping? Boehner?(not too surprised) Cantor?(not too surprised) A few others who would have stood their grounds now decide to vote for this?
I might be mistaken in some of what I said above, but assuming I'm not, at this point, what I would love to see happen is that this government is absolutely abolished.(wishful thinking, eh?) I don't care what happens to this government anymore, they are our enemy anyway and I'm pretty much lumping Congress as that, even with the Republican Majority who are afraid of their own shadows. Stupid, unscientific, and deceptive information from NB
Submitted by Giygas on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:43pm.
This is the funniest piece of right wing paranoia I've seen in some time. The facts on global warming have already closed in on the climate change deniers. Now paranoid conspiracy theories and scare stories are the final resort. The main reason why conservatives deny climate change is because of this line of reasoning:
1. I'm afraid of 'big government' and hate 'environmentalists'
2. Carbon regulation is 'big government' supported by 'environmentalists'
3. Therefore I oppose carbon regulation
4. If humans are causing dangerous global warming, carbon regulation is necessary
5. Therefore in order to justify my carbon regulation opposition, I must deny that humans are causing global warming.
The purported link between environmental policy and communism is for low information voters with sixth grade reasoning. You would have to be very mentally challenged to buy into the propaganda in the article.

The latest report from NASA covering 10 years of data shows that carbon dioxide may not trap nearly as much heat as computer climate models were programmed for. Could be that carbon is not the evil culprit it has been made out to be.
Last week's "record breaking" heat wave set 32 new records out of the 6000+ records kept.
Environmentalism advocates central planning as a means to control carbon emissions from industry. They want to control production by setting quotas tied to carbon emissions and punishing the company if they exceed those limits. True, communist central planning punished companies that did not make their quotas. It might be apples and oranges to you, but they are both fruit. Central planning by government agencies that get to make up the rules as they go along is a system that has always failed every time it is tried. I give you the example of today's EPA trying to implement cap and trade despite it being voted down by congress.
People don't want it. Industry does not want it. The economy does not want it, But the EPA whines "But this is four your own good".
Do you know how many miserable, rotten despots have used that excuse? When I hear those words come out of a government mouth, I know we are in deep, deep trouble.

Submitted by Giygas on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 6:02pm.
You apparently have very low scientific literacy because, you are confusing all-time records with daily records. As of July 25, 2,100 daily high maximum temperature records have been set so far this month, and 51% of those were set last week. 4,734 daily high minimum temperature records have been set so far this month.
So you have read about the new NASA data that is said to blow a hole in the global warming alarmism debate? I've seen the Forbes article. But this isn't 'new' NASA data, and the data hasn't blown a hole in anything, only the interpretation of it by Roy Spencer. And here's the problem: Spencer has published a number of papers in respected, peer-reviewed journals in the past. But he decides to pay to have this one published in a freebie online 'journal' started two years ago and not accredited by the ISI. Does that matter? No, not for those who are interested in cutting and pasting any old crap, checked or unchecked, onto the Internet. But for those who take science seriously, research has to be written up in respected, peer-reviewed journals. Sorry, that may sound stuffy and elitist and conspiratorial, but that's how we separate good science from crap, and ensure that the knowledge that goes forward to the next generation of scientists has been verified to the best of our ability.

FWIW: Some interesting data as of June, 2011
Submitted by Jer on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 1:55am.
Climate Highlights - June •June 2011 brought extremes in both temperature and precipitation across the United States. An oppressive heat wave accompanied by intensifying drought conditions shattered temperature records in the South and Southwest. •The average U.S. temperature in June was 70.7 degrees F (21.5 degrees C), which is 1.4 degrees F (0.8 degrees C) above the long-term (1901-2000) average.
Precipitation, averaged across the nation, was 2.48 inches (63.0 mm). This was 0.41 inch (10.4 mm) below the long-term average, with large variability in different locations. •Several locations broke all-time high temperature records during June. On the 26th, Amarillo, Texas set an all time high temperature record of 111.0 degrees F (43.9 degrees C), breaking the record of 109.0 degrees F (42.8 degrees C) set just two days prior. On the 15th, Tallahassee, Florida also recorded an all-time high, 105.0 degrees F (40.6 degrees C).
For the month, 42 U.S. locations tied or broke all-time maximum high temperature records. •In addition to the daily high temperatures, average temperatures during June were also historic in Texas. In Lubbock, the average temperature of 85.8 degrees F (29.9 degrees C) was 8.5 degrees F (4.7 degrees C) above the June average. This surpassed July 1966 (85.4 degrees F or 29.7 degrees C) as the city's warmest month on record. In Midland, the average temperature of 88.0 degrees F (31.1 degrees C) was also the warmest month on record, surpassing the monthly average of 87.2 degrees F (30.7 degrees C) set in August 1964. Additionally, Houston and Galveston had their warmest June on record. •
The expansive heat across Texas resulted in an average statewide temperature of 85.2 degrees F (29.6 degrees C), which was 5.6 degrees F (3.1 degrees C) above normal, surpassing 1953 as the warmest June in 117 years of records. This was the Texas' fourth consecutive June with temperatures at least 2 degrees F (1.1 degrees C) above the long-term average.
•Several other states also had temperatures much above normal. Both Louisiana and Oklahoma (tied) had their second warmest June; Georgia tied for its third warmest. It was the sixth warmest for Arkansas, Delaware (tied), Florida, Mississippi, and New Mexico.
•Along with the heat, parts of the Southwest through much of the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast experienced a continuation of intense drought. New Mexico had its driest June on record while Arizona and Oklahoma had their fourth driest. June was the fifth driest in Texas and the ninth driest in Florida.
On the other hand, parts of the Pacific Northwest set records for cool temperatures during April-June.

China did not cause global cooling over the past decade with their aerosol emissions, the aerosol emissions just reduced the amount of warming over the past decade. The cooling effect of the aerosols is just a transient phenomenon, because aerosols only have a residence time in the atmosphere of only couple of weeks and their atmospheric concentration will only hold for as long as they are replenished by their sources. Carbon dioxide, on the other hand, can remain in the atmosphere for over a century and will still be in the atmosphere long after its sources shuts down. As China establishes scrubbers and cleaner coal burning methods in their coal plants in the next few decades, the atmospheric aerosol concentration will almost immediately go down substantially, and so will the cooling effect. This will allow the vast quantities of CO2 emitted by the same coal, to warm the planet markedly. http://www.pnas.org/content/108/29/11790.short
The paper written by Spencer, as I've said, is not a study, but just his interpretation of the science. This paper would have to submitted to and accepted by a peer-reviewed journal in order to be deemed scientifically accurate. This general rule applies to all fields of science, ranging from disciplines like medicine and botany, to metallurgy and astronomy. To the science-impaired that doesn't matter, any "study" that conforms to your worldview is unquestionably accurate, verified or unverified.
The peer-review process is vital to ensuring that bad science doesn't get into the scientific literature. Peer-reviewed science is what allowed us to signifcantly lengthen our life expectany and dramatically improve our quality of life with modern medicine, get us to the moon, map our genome, create techonology for wide-spead communication and daily conveniences, ect. Unpeer-reviewed science is responsible for the hundreds of thousands of preventable AIDS deaths at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, fallacious information from tobacco companies on cigarettes, acid rain denial, ect.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 2:50pm.
At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, no single causative pathogen had been identified prior to the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus family. There was incomplete epidemiology and there were NAV (no apparent vector) cases that were called AIDS. It was only later that the linkages to human immunodeficiency viruses and the mechanisms of immune system down-regulation were discovered. AIDS is a clinical stage of HIV infection.
We already had the epidemiology on smoking and its sequelae, so don't bother trying to incorrectly link that to a lack of peer-reviewed research either.
The idea of global warming is based on mathematical models which are not universally accepted. I could not make medical treatment decisions on such low quality conjectures as mathematical models.

When will this stick? Global
Submitted by Giygas on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 5:56pm.
When will this stick? Global warming doesn't mean record-breaking warmth everywhere every year at the same time. Global warming is an extended upward trend in the globally averaged temperature. The average temperature of the planet is about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it was at the beginning of the 20th century. The temperature increase for the contiguous U.S. has been about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point, the warming is large enough for twice as many record high temperatures to occur than record low temperatures across the U.S. But it is still small enough for natural variability dominate the temperature signal and conspire to produce periods of record cold from time to time.
http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=115905
Most of the records listed above are likely to be broken by 2100. It would indeed be remarkable, even to alarmists like Al Gore, if all of them were broken by this point, even if we were in the worst possible scenario. As I showed you in the above comment, 19 all-time national heat records fell last year and 2 have fallen so far this year. No all-time national cold records were broken in the past few years.
1934 is statistically tied with 1998 and 2006 as the hottest year on record in the U.S. Globally 1934 was much cooler than 1998 and 2006. The United States only makes up 1.5% of the globe's surface area.

Are these the same peer-reviewed journals...
Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 6:53pm.
...that told us thirty years ago that we were going to experience another ice age? Maybe you are too young or were not even born yet, but we suffered some debilitating winters in the late 70s/early 80s that climatologists told us were due to everything from pollution to overpopulation to [insert reason here]. The same thing occurs in biological journals as in other branches of science, that is conclusions are often drawn incorrectly. Whether it is someone saying that association implies causality or ignoring the principle of Occam's Razor, in science nothing is ever settled. With the exceptions of those scientific laws already on the books (thermodynamics, etc.), scientists are not really into anything more than consensus--which often nothing more than an educated guess in the absence of conflicting information. There is plenty of conflicting information in climatology and geophysics.
Peer-reviewed journals are NOT the be-all, end-all of science. Very often, even the peers get it wrong. Ever heard of the vaccine/autism hoax published in one of the most respected journals (Lancet)? You know the one where the physician who fudged the data lost his license and the editors were forced to print a retraction? Or perhaps you remember that notorious cold fusion experiment that could not be reproduced accurately? Or maybe the hundreds of other scientific articles that produced inaccurate, outmoded or incorrect results?
Sorry to sound deflating to your obsession on global warming, but it is only a hypothesis and nothing more. It is also a highly lucrative field of research that is not unlike other research fads that have come and gone, such as prions, cold dark matter and string theory.
From a physician's viewpoint, what you are not saying about global warming theory is:
1) The instrumentation which measures these effects is not uniformly accurate enough - chemical sensing systems can be notoriously inaccurate even when supposedly validated. In some clinical study methodologies, we use the data carry-forward method for missing values because of ethics concerns. In hard physical sciences (chemistry, math, physics, geology), if you use the carry-forward method it means you are a rather lazy scientist. With such accuracy and precision problems manifesting in variables used for climate change mathematical models, a series of missing values seriously dilutes the predictive value of the model.
2) The more complex the mathematical model (as for various climate change models), the greater chance that errors can be propagated through the model even in the presence of more sophisticated recursive correction algorithms or precision adjustments through sensitivity analyses. In other words, the results are no better than random chance at 50/50.
3) Single-event level probability with a pre-defined phenomenon is never more than 50/50 - either it will happen or not. In more complex phenomena using multiple comparisons in a composite end-point scenario, a probability correction must be made to account for each single element of the composite endpoint. Climate is a complex geophysical event that is not a singular outcome.
There was no global cooling

There was no global cooling consensus in the 1970s. A study published in the bulletin of the American Meteorological Society searched scientific journals from the 1970s and found that papers predicting global warming far outnumbered those that predicted global cooling. The myth that most climate scientists predicted global cooling in 1970s is just based on a handful articles published in Time and Newsweek magazine and certain newspapers.

What novels had to say about the climate is moot. What matters is what is shown in the peer-reviewed journals. Today there are thousands of papers in scientific journals in support of anthropogenic global warming. If most climate scientists really were predicting global cooling back in the 1970s, there should be many papers demonstrating that prediction in the refereed literature dating back to that time. But papers predicting global warming outnumbered those predicting global cooling by about 6 to 1

NASA Peer-Reviewed Study Finds Low Sensitivity To CO2 Doubling: The UN's IPCC Global Warming Science Is Imploding
The infamous, never-before-seen, IPCC climate model prediction of scary, positive AGW-feedback has now been vanquished by scientific empirical research. NASA's researchers have just pushed the button of detonation, which will likely hasten the collapse of the IPCC's version of "climate science" upon itself.
Simply stated, the IPCC's Climategate scientists and computer models conjured up the scary prediction of a 3 to 5 degree Celsius temperature increase from a doubling of CO2, along with requisite, speculative, calamitous events of biblical destruction proportions. But now the latest research finds that CO2 doubling causes an increase of only 1.64 degrees, which is within the range of outcomes that skeptical scientists have been saying for decades.

We went from being Earth to being Narnia with the White Witch according to those books. And lest we forget the media blitzes saying the same thing.
Giygas is obsessed with climate change and is compulsive towards dragging every shred of information (credible or not) out to inform us poor troubled souls who do not share the same vision. To the OCD, I will add a nice dash of obsessional personality disorder. These Axis I/II co-diagnoses are the worst. Even when you treat the primary, you still have the untreatable second to deal with!
If our little OCD climatologist is so intent on educating us, perhaps the first advice any professor could give an educator is not to insult the students--particularly when the instructor's grasp of facts is tenuous at best.

From this side, global warming looks like whacky paranoid conspiracy theories. You point to one or two pieces of data whose validity has been roundly questioned and assume that all adds up to a global crisis.
Example, the "scientist" that predicted all the polar bears would drown soon just got suspended and an investigation into the accuracy and possible fudging of his data to get the results he wanted is just starting. The picture of a bear standing on a small ice chunk was taken completely out of context. Ask the people that took the picture.
