Open Thread: Paul Ryan Details GOP Medicare Plan in New Video
In an effort to counteract tactics that some Republicans fear could cost the GOP electoral victories in 2012, Rep. Paul Ryan lays out the facts behind his proposed budget, which he calls the "Path to Prosperity," in a follow-up to his first video on the plan. Check out the new one after the break, and let us know what you think.
What do you think of Ryan's new video and the approach he's taking? Is his description of the problem and the various potential solutions accurate?

In other words, why is the fox guarding the henhouse? FactCheck.org is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, which is a left-leaning subsidiary of the Annenberg Foundation - the same foundation from which Bill Ayers (remember him?) got nearly 50 million dollars with which to establish the Chicago Annenberg Challenge - of which Barack Obama was the first chairman of the board.
I believe nothing they say.

Your reference is to “Fact Check” which is part of the “The Annenburg Public Policy Center” – A leftist organization run out of the University of Pennsylvania.
Here’s a link that might interest you:

Quoted from the above linked article:
“What’s the bottom line? FactCheck.org is a LEFT-BIASED organization that has sold itself as “Politically NEUTRAL” to America’s voters and media personnel.
“The fact is, the ANNENBERG Public Policy Center (APPC), the sponsoring agency behind FastCheck.org, is itself supported by the same foundation, the ANNENBERG FOUNDATION, that Bill Ayers secured the 49.2 million dollars from to create the Chicago ANNENBERG Challenge “philanthropic” organization in which Barack Obama was the founding Chairman of the Board for and Ayers served as the grant writer of and co-Chair of for its two operating arms. “
Hope this helps.

P.s.: I liked Ryan’s video, and I support his plan – while it may not be perfect, it is miles beyond the ‘absolutely nothing’ the Democrats have proposed.

Here are just 2 things i find laughable..
That GOP document says Democrats in Congress and Obama increased the deficit 259 percent since 2008, when it was $458 billion. That ignores the fact that President George Bush was in office in 2008. Obama inherited a $1.2 trillion deficit largely caused by declining revenues and Bush’s response to the economic crisis.
If fact knew anything about the constitution, they would know that congress controls the money. And the Dems had control of congress in Jan of 2008. I am pretty sure Obama was part of that congress. GWB only problem was he just "wanted to get along" and agreed to nearly every single bit of spending the congress put forth.
Ryan says Obama’s proposed budget “commits seniors to bureaucratically rationed health care.” In fact, the new health care law states that the advisory board to which Ryan refers “shall not include any recommendation to ration health care.” Furthermore, the board members are to be primarily doctors, economists and other outside experts, not Washington bureaucrats.
I mean, how gullible do you have to be to believe this. A board made up of primarly doctors, economists, and "other" experts. LOL And rationed care is so obviously coming, you have to be willingly blind not to see it. Sheesh, it already exists today for medicare patients. Fewer and Fewer doctors are not taking these patients. What kind of choice is that?
I read a bit more but I couldn't stop laughing. All their assumptions about Obama's plan was based on the spin the Obama administration made public. They have already changed it (changing the date of when issuers must cover pre-existing). So whatever "savings" they claim is void now, and has to be looked at again.
Do I think everything Ryan says here is gospel. No, some of it doesn't add up to me as savings, but I like the fact that the more money you make, the less medicare you receive. I plan on being one of the more well-off seniors so I don't have the government telling me what doctor to go to, and what hospital I have to be treated at. My Husband and I have 20+ years to go to make that a reality.
All I can say to you Connect, is to learn to think critically FOR YOURSELF. Don't lets others tell you what "sounds" good and what doesn't. Look at peoples assumptions. Remember what assume starts with also.

As a senior who will go on medicare (no choice of my own) next year, I would prefer Ryans plan, if I were younger, at least then I would have a choice. Congress gave themselves a wonderful plan yet does not allow nearly the same benefits for the rest of us. Next question: How is the GOP and Ryan going to get that video out to the masses? Well put together and well done.

The GOP have blown this. They had only one body in the Congress and for some reason known only to them they could not wait to commit suicide. Instead of talking about the waste in the government, cutting NPR, and every other dollar that is being misspent they are defending something that they had no business bringing up. This should have been shelved.
Also the House should pass no further legislation till the democrats come up with their budget. No further legislation will be passed till the democrats in the Senate produced a budget. Will they do this? No. Why? Lord knows.
Also where is Reince Priebus? He has two tasks in life to raise money and take on BO. He is doing neither. This is what happens when you elect the candidate that is least hated.

Medicare has been 'shelved' for far too long and it must be addressed.
We are broke and our government has been allowed to be irresponsible stewards of our money for far too long. The money we need to save in order to reduce our debt cannot be realized by simply targeting discretionary spending. All entitlement programs must be reformed in order to succeed.

Submitted by jdhawk on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 12:24am.
It is the president's job to submit the budget (read the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 and current law, 31 USC 1105) for the next fiscal year (October 1) to Congress. duhbama has done that for 2012 (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget) . The problem is that it does nothing to control spending, but actually increases it. Thus, increasing the deficit.
The House, now controlled by Republicans, came up with their own plan. The problem is that the dimocrats control the Senate and will not even consider the House plan. The Senate dimocrats must agree to whatever the House comes up with and then together they send the jointly approved appropriations bill to the president for signature. They refuse to budge.
So, let's say that the House got the Senate to agree to their plan. It would then be up to the president to either sign it or return it with a veto. If vetoed, it must then pass Congress with a 2/3 vote. As you can see, squat is getting done.
For the above reasons, the only "arrow" in the House Republican's quiver is the vote on the debt ceiling. If they refuse to raise it unless they get concessions from the Senate and the president, then the American people will be better off given that the current situation is both unsustainable and will contribute to the national debt causing the debt ceiling to be raised yet again.
My bet is that the Republicans will cave come 2 August 2011 (the deadline set by the treasury secretary) and we will have yet another year of $1 trillion plus dollar budget deficits.
I have yet to see a collective spine in the Repubicans of either chamber. I want to be surprised, but I am not counting on it.
Ryan's plan is sound and achievable. The video is a good start. However, unless every Republican stands behind it and knows it front/back, forward/backward, up/down and can counter every dimocrat objection and/or lie, then it will fail. If you don't think so, look what the Republicans in the Congress did to President Bush's Social Security plan. It was ripped to shreds by the lamestream media and the dimocrat politicians while the Republicans sat on their hands. Sadly, that is what is happening now.
What do I think of Ryan's new video?
Submitted by Conservator on Wed, 05/25/2011 - 12:26pm.
I doubt it will help to sell it to current seniors - you know the ones who will be voting in 2012. The video has many details that will bewilder most. Furthermore, how many seniors and all other voters will see it? Is it going to be an advertisement for the Republican Party in the 2012 election?
I like Ryan and I support most of what's in his plan, albeit I'm 53 years old. However, I wish he and his fellow Republicans would have concentrated more on reducing the cost of Medicaid. Medicaid has gone up by 54% in two years compared to increases in Social Security - 14% and Medicare -16% - that's the real problem.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) cut $500 billion from Medicare and will add up to 30 million new Medicaid recipients to it. States couldn't afford the red-ink of Medicaid and relied on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009's $86.8 billion to pay for Medicaid's mounting debt at the State level.

But they can't reduce the health care rate - it's baked in from all the mandates to cover that the insurance co's had to agree to to operate in a given state.
Does no one else notice the 3 things completely out of parity with pay are Helath care, Housing, and Education? What is the main driver in all 3? Gov't intrusion/mandates.
EXCELLENT reason to reduce gov't.

Glenn Beck hilarity #2597
Submitted by Icarus on Wed, 05/25/2011 - 8:38pm.
To lift up an open thread: When Glenn Beck announced he was leaving his daily Fox News Channel show, he said he was looking to the Internet for great new ideas. A great new Glenn Beck idea? Markdown.com, a coupon site meant to capitalize on similar sites such as Groupon and Social Living. Here's the bluster Beck is spinning about it.
"Markdown is a way for people to connect with companies and products that respect their values, and respect their hard-earned dollars. If we want to save our country, we have to save ourselves, which means we have to align ourselves with things that are true, and I think we have an opportunity to save people money and unite with each other and create something new, with real value, to help. If I can create something of worth, and be able to with that, help others, to enrich or enhance their lives, I think we've done a good thing."

Yes, Glenn Beck certainly does want to respect people's hard-earned dollars and save our country by creating a discount website. It's a scam, of course, but I like scams such as Columbia House more than I like Beck.

Glenn Beck scam
Submitted by Icarus on Wed, 05/25/2011 - 10:30pm.
How about if I explain the facts about how the scam works? Beck's Markdown.com site offers a deal on a product. The first deal that is being offered is a $20 box of chocolates from Chocolate.com for ten percent off for every friend you get to sign up for Markdown.com. If you get ten friends to sign up for Markdown.com, you get the item for free.
It's improbable many people would get many friends to sign up. But, just to make sure, Markdown.com invests in a limited enough inventory of boxes of chocolates to keep that from happening. You sign up friends as consumers of Markdown.com, Markdown.com runs out of boxes of chocolate, Markdown.com pockets the money it received from Chocolate.com and lets Chocolate.com handle all the consumers wanting discounts, and then Markdown.com moves on to the next merchant that it can trick into a "let us direct customers to your services" deal.
It's pretty traditional of "sign up your friends" schemes.

It kind of sounds like you just forfeited the Presidency. If you did just do that, even if Republicans win big in Congress in 2012 (a real big "if" ), that means no conservative stuff getting put into law until at least January 2017. Barack Obama will always be there to veto any conservative stuff, and I doubt Republicans in Congress will ever have enough to override any vetoes.
