Open Thread: Ryan to Release GOP Budget

By NB Staff | April 05, 2011 | 09:16

A  A

Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, is slated to release the Republican budget for FY2012 today. He took to the Wall Street Journal to offer some details and tout the need for budget reform. Ryan also created the very slick video you'll see below the break to outline the nation's fiscal situation. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Thoughts? What do you think the media reaction will be to the budget? David Brooks calls it the "most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes." Do you agree?

I can tell you how Mika Brezinski reacted to Ryan

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 9:40am.

I'm always amazed that the legacy media thinks itself to be so subtle, as with Mika Brezinski's lead-in to Paul Ryan this morning on "Morning Joe." She was already ticked off with Scarborough for questioning Obama's hypocrisy about Gitmo and military tribunals, so she was at her snarkiest, mean girls best. So, when Joe said that Paul Ryan was next on the program and didn't she like him, she said, "Yes, he's a nice BOY." By all means, Mika, invalidate Ryan's intellect and ability on the budget issues by calling him a "boy."

The best part of all is that Mika is 43 and Ryan is 41- she's all of 2 1/2 years older than he is! Maybe it's just that she looks so much older than he does!

Of course, the media will say 1) we are not "broke" 2) the Ryan budget is "extreme" 3) the budget will devastate a) the elderly and make them eat cat food b) the poor and make them die freezing in the streets c) military vets and make them die while waiting for medical treatment 4) poor children and make them unschooled and unable to ever get out of poverty if they survive the lack of food, etc., etc., ad nauseum

The liberals with counter

Submitted by inquiringmind on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 9:54am.

The liberals with counter with we need to raise taxes on the rich. My answer is, Ok so we raise taxes. Once we do that and we find out that it barely moves the needle on the debt, now what?

And that is exactly what the conservatives who go on these talk shows need to ask. Then what, because raising taxes will not do it. Not by a long shot.

Now SELL THIS THING HARD

Submitted by Unsane on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:07am.

This was a damn good video, and something tells me I'm going to like this budget.

NOW, what Rep. Ryan and Company needs to do - this is REQUIRED, no options whatsoever - is to get out and SELL this program, and go over the heads of the media and the Dems, for whom a single penny cut from the federal government's budget equates famine and the opening of the gates of Hell.

And who knows?  If the cards are played right, this will mobilize the TEA Party to the nth degree...

This is just plain common sense. To reduce your debt you have to cut your spending and pay your debt off. There is no magic bullet to it we are just going to have to tighten our belts and roll up our sleaves.

You are absolutely right, the alphabet Nets will not play it.  They will in fact "spike" it.  And this may have worked in 1985.  But now, with youtube, the Internet, Facebook...this video can be shown far and wide.  We all need to start doing that.  NB linking to it is a good start.

Go get 'em Ryan!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:14am.

From David Brooks’s column:
“It also creates the pivotal moment of truth for President Obama. Will he come up with his own counterproposal, or will he simply demagogue the issue by railing against “savage” Republican cuts and ignoring the long-term fiscal realities?” (end quote)

Obama will face this “pivotal moment of truth” just like he faces all the others – he will spend weeks *contemplating it in hopes people will just forget about it. What do you something other than the budget are the top LSM stories tomorrow (possibly even tonight)?

Note: *Contemplation (as used) means Obama will ignore the problem hoping it will go away - but will play golf, go on vacations, meet with Lady Gaga or some other worthless celebrity, and probably work on his ‘world series’ picks.

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:55am.

In Sunday's Fox News Sunday interview, Ryan was asked point blank by Chris Wallace whether this budget was handing the democrats a weapon with which to bludgeon Republicans.

Ryan responded (interestingly)....yes, we are. "But they are going to have to lie and demagogue the issue." He repeated the phrase a few times. So the rest of the Republicans need to get on board early and repeat often. Democrats are lying. Democrats are lying. Democrats are lying.

See Noel's post from Sunday, he put up the entire video (this bit happened near the end of the video).

P.S. Obama will go missing on this important national issue, just as he has on every other one. He's as predictable as the rising sun.

Guess MSNBC is bored with Libya

Submitted by Red Jeep on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:15am.

Listening to MSNBC for the first 15 minutes of the 10:00 AM hour, and there was no mention Libya. Maybe the war there is over.

Funny you should mention that

Submitted by Van Halen on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:17am.

Funny you should mention that because I said the same thing last night. I went to both CNN and MSNBC home pages and the top stories were NOT the nuclear disaster continuing to unfold and reach our country OR the War #3 in Libya. But they were upset about something the Republicans did. Can't remember what it was.

I guess anything else gets broomed that is not helpful to this effort.

OK, let me get this

Submitted by Van Halen on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:16am.

OK, let me get this straight.
We were told when we elected Republicans last year they'd cut $100 billion.
They've cut absolutely nothing. And they can't get the Democrats to go along with more than $6 billion.
Now we're being told 'Don't worry! NEXT YEAR we'll cut TRILLIONS!'

Um, how exactly am I supposed to believe this?

I'm sorry if my comments upset some of my fellow posters but I have yet to see one single substantial... well ANYTHING from the Republicans since they took office.

One more point. Here's a simple list that the Republicans should be well on their way into by now. Can you put a checkmark as 'finished' next to any of these?

- repeal Obamacare
- enact massive tax cuts
- enact massive spending cuts
- put troops/wall/cameras/drones to the Mexican border
- defund PBS, FCC
- haul the czars up to explain what they do and where the money is going and send them to prison if necessary.

Exactly. Where's the action?

Submitted by Red Jeep on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:40am.

I tried to listen to Paul Ryan's 3 minute presentation. My mind wandered after 2 minutes. Clever graphics, but just words no details. All talk, no action.

Keep this up and there will be a third party started, splitting the Republican party, and re-electing a nightmare.

To add to your list the Republicans ought to start serious discussions about closing some Federal departments like the Departments of Education, Energy, etc.

With no action it is just blah, blah, blah....

Patience, pressure, and support. We need some patience, but we also need to keep up the pressure. Especially on the "career" GOP members. And we need to let those voted in during the last election that we are behind them when they try to cut the budget. With all the noise coming from the left, we need to make some noise on this side. Not rude noises, but encouraging.

You do realize that the House

Submitted by bkeyser on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 11:12am.

You do realize that the House voted to repeal Obamacare, defund PBS, and enact massive spending cuts, right? I don't remember a promise for massive tax cuts, but the Bush tax rates were extended after the Nov. election. And Issa is making quite a ruckus with his Oversight Committee subpoenas.

You also understand that Harry Reid let most of these die in the Senate, right? And the White House has a say in some of this too, like a veto threat just released on a bill to curb new net neutrality rules enacted by the FCC. And Janet insists that some of the country's safest communities are located along the southern border so it's not likely we'll see much in the way of changes in that arena.

You might consider ramping up your enthusiasm for those who want to effect the changes we need to bring this country back from the Obama abyss, rather than lambasting them when they're constrained by a Democratic Senate and Executive branch. There are a ton of Democrat Senators that have to run along with Obama in 2012 and we stand an excellent chance of not only flipping the Senate and White House, but gaining in the House again as well. That's when all of these major changes will happen, but only if we don't abandon our pioneers.

Well said BK. Folks have to

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 11:26am.

Well said BK.

Folks have to realize that the Republicans only control one part of Congress, the House.  Reid will kill what he can in the Senate and anything else that makes it through faces The Absentee Presidents veto pen.

We The People have to keep on top of our representatives in the House and Senate to vote according to OUR wishes as their constituents.  We also have to make sure that 2012 is the year that Republicans/Conservatives hold the House, Senate and the White House.   This Country needs to turn away from the abyss it is heading towards and it sure as hell will not happen if we do not get the majority in 2012.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 11:43am.

While I'll be the first to be with you guys in those desires to get those dems out of office, given the way how things are screwed up, how can that be accomplished when 90% of the media is lib-controlled and carrying the water for the enemy that is the dems?

Right now I'm horribly pessimistic about the whole thing, especially when you get the polls favoring the Chairman with higher numbers than he deserves.(should be in the 10-20 percentage range, not 40-50)  I credit the lame stream media for influencing people with that.

I'm also horribly pessimistic about the safety of this country, we've been severely weakened in so many ways, I'm surprised there aren't more attempts than have been already.  The list on this is long.

Aside from controlling the House, how does one get some sort of optimism for the future when the deck is stacked?(I know, I know, I sound depressing as hell)

Jon, there is more than one

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:00pm.

Jon, there is more than one type of media.

I can tell you I do not watch the news on tv except a local cable station for the weather and traffic. I do not subscribe to any newspapers though I am thinking of signing of for the WSJ online. I do watch a little Fox in the evening, either the business channel or occasionally Hannity to watch the libs try and defend the actions of The Absentee President and his cohorts in Congress.

I get most if not all of my news online.

As Unsane said below (or above) the GOP should go over the media's head. Do town halls, get FaceBook and Twitter accounts to send out their message. Engage with their constituents. And if they do go onto the LSM they should be prepared to do battle. They need to realize the LSM is NOT their friend and that they need to up their game and call them out on their bias.

No one said this would be easy.  Americans have been disengaged for a little to long if you ask me and have let the Government do what they want without question.  We need to get more involved, be it writing, phoning or emailing our Representatives to let them know we are watching them.  I have an app on my BlackBerry called Visible Vote, it tells me what bills are coming up for vote and if I want it to pass or not and then notifies my Senators (not sure if they notify my Congresscritter) how I want them to vote.

Do not despair, you are not alone.  There are millions of folks like you and I who want our Country to right itself and change course.  But it will not happen if WE do not do something about it.

We all need to shout at the top of our lungs, Jon

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:33pm.

  • The democrats abdicated their responsibility in 2010 by NOT PASSING A BUDGET.  They kicked the can down the road, and were rewarded with a massive loss of seats.
  • The democrats continue to abdicate their responsibility in 2011, by not passing a budget which they SHOULD HAVE passed on their own, last year.
  • The democrats refuse to participate in any constructive discussion of how to get this country back on a fiscally sane track.  The democrats continue to spout their tired old talking points, "tax cuts for big oil", "tax cuts for the rich", "defunding senior citizens", etc.
  • The democrat in the White House continues to vote present.  While we have been in the midst of an immediate fiscal crisis (continuing resolutions), Obama has jetted off to Rio, golfed, and until today, which is THREE DAYS BEFORE THE GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN, refused to meet with Republican leadership.

Our response needs to be:

THEY LIE, THEY LIE, THEY LIE, THEY LIE.  The democrats do not deserve another attempt at leadership, because they have clearly demonstrated they cannot lead, all they can do is lie, and fail, and act in a political manner instead of taking care of the concerns of the citizens of this nation.

Take comfort Jon.  As Allen West said, the 2010 election was merely a shaping operation.  The real war begins in 2012, and we are once again on the field in a further shaping operation with this budget.  Now is the time to put the hammer down, write and call your Congressional representation, potential candidates (donate if you can), go to Tea Party demonstrations.  Get LOUD!

We can do this.

Thanks for all the responses.

The emotion I would say that I feel the most right now is just plain anger and you all have seen and/or listed the reasons as to why.

I was talking to my dad last night, he's 77 so he has some insight of the past, and I asked him if the 70s under Jimmy Carter were anything like this.  He said no, and he even invoked Harry Truman how crazy things were under him(I had no clue) and how much more bad things are with this charlatan in the WH.

The frustrating thing is, it doesn't have to be this way, but it is because of some very few people who strongly desire to control the masses of millions and make their lives miserable for it, which is a helluva way to live.

Oh well, time will tell the tale of what will happen.

They have to learn to manipulate the media.

For example announce: " We intend to close the Department of Education." Then let the howling begin from the Democrats. Start a national discussion on the issue. Get the Sunday Talk shows discussing it.

Use that opportunity to show the Democrats for what they are and show your voting base you are doing something, etc...

The house is doing what they were elected to do. It is the Democrat controlled Senate and the Executive Branch that is holding things up.
If we are to have any hope of changing course toward a more sane and sustainable budget and country, we need to elect a Republican/Conservative majority into the Senate, maintain the republican majority in the House (or grow it) and elect a Conservative as President in 2012. Only then will we have a chance of passing a budget like Paul Ryan's and continuing it for 4 or hopefully 8 years into the future.

Somebody please tell me what's wrong with shutting down the government?  They do it themselves several times a year.  We seem to survive crap like MLK Day, etc without going into cardiac arrest.  So what's the problem?

I'm old, retired, a veteran, living on fixed income and all the other whines that I hear from the liberals.  I'm supposed to be one of the "poor, helpless senior citizens" who can't breathe without the frigging government to pump air in me.   I don't give a shiite if they shut the government down!  I'm not worried because the government didn't get me to where I am today, and they damned sure ain't going to ruin my life if they go the hell back to doing just the basics as outlined in the Constitution!  Pay the military, pay the cops and fire fighters, and forget the rest.  Just stick to protecting us from enemies, foreign and domestic.  Otherwise shut the hell up and go to work on something useful.

So what the hell is the problem?  Shut it down.  Stop paying Congress, and the Administration.  Cut off their health care, etc.  Park their cars and airplanes.  Let them find a job!  Let's see how those sorry bastards do on their own.

SHUT DOWN NOW!

I also think it's much easier to be flying around making speeches about philanthropy, than to be the person volunteering in a school, food bank, etc. The egos on these guys...

Disingenuous B*tching

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:42pm.

All the disingenuous griping about how the Republicans are not fulfilling all of their campaign promises from 2010 is hilarious. There isn't one person posting those complaints that doesn't know that the Republicans can do absolutely nothing regarding those promises because of the Democrat controlled Senate and President Obama.

A while back, we saw stories that liberals are paying people to post these types of disingenuous replies on leading conservative message boards on the net.  I think we are seeing that strategy in action, to deflect and misdirect, and demonize a party that really has no political power, until after 2012.

Disenfranchised

Massive voter fraud is the same thing as denying people the right to vote.  I have not seen a single story where an individual was denied their right to vote, yet I continue to see stories like this one.  Stopping voter fraud, and framing voter fraud in the proper context, should be a high priority.

Which is more painful to a Democrat and his/her media toady: budget cuts or root canal?

Not enough, folks

Submitted by Hermano on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 9:34pm.

One major problem with the budget is that it never balances even one year. While I am glad there is something that tries to cut, I do not think it goes nearly far enough.

Recount

Prosser by 600 as of 6:00 am, Wednesday morning?  He'll lose in the recount.  Dems have a way of finding that many votes in somebody's trunk without much trouble.

In a surprising late voter count, Kloppenburg has pulled ahead by about 350 votes! What a shocker!

Did someone open up the trunk

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 11:28am.

Did someone open up the trunk of their car? I would love to see how many dead folks are voting.
