Open Thread: 'The Only Good Conservative Is a Dead Conservative'
That's how Jonah Goldberg facetiously begins his latest column at National Review. NewsBusters and the Media Research Center have, of late, been documenting the media's newfound love for Ronald Reagan, and helpfully reminding them that most journalists were not just ambivalent to Reagan when he was alive, but were ourtight hostile to him. Goldberg describes this revisionist effort as "an almost Soviet airbrushing of the past to serve liberalism’s current agenda."
We couldn't agree more. Check out an exceprt from Goldberg's column below the break.
Now, on the one hand, there’s something wonderful about the overflowing of love for Reagan. When presidents leave office or die, their partisan affiliation fades and, for the great ones, eventually withers away. Reagan was a truly great president, one of the greatest according to even liberal historians like the late John Patrick Diggins. As you can tell from the gnashing of teeth and rending of cloth from the far Left, the lionization of Reagan is a great triumph for the Right, and conservatives should welcome more of it.
On the other hand, what is not welcome is an almost Soviet airbrushing of the past to serve liberalism’s current agenda. For starters, if liberals are going to celebrate Reagan, they might try to account for the fact that they fought his every move, alternating between derision and slander in the process. As Steven Hayward, author of the two-volume history The Age of Reagan, asks in the current National Review, “Who can forget the relentless scorn heaped on Reagan for the ‘evil empire’ speech and the Strategic Defense Initiative?” Hayward notes that historian Henry Steele Commager said the “evil empire” speech “was the worst presidential speech in American history, and I’ve read them all.”
The point isn’t that liberals were wrong to oppose every Reagan policy. But what they seem to ignore is that those policies were the products of a political philosophy. Sure, he made pragmatic compromises, but he started from a philosophical position that the self-anointed smart set considered not just wrong, but evil or stupid or both. The Media Research Center has issued a lengthy report chronicling countless journalistic examples, but my favorite comes from Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London, which in 1982 held a vote for the most hated people of all time. The winners: Hitler, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Dracula.
Read the whole thing. Many thanks to Jonah for the MRC shout-out!

I notice 3 major groups supporting the Egypt protesters -- which, I remind you, include muslim brotherhood as the most organized of the protesters:
The MSM is clueless; and obama is just as clueless. The only one of these groups that has a grip on reality is IRAN. When are we going to learn that obama and his MSM lemmings are the most dangerous aspect of our nation, and are leading us straight into disaster?

The big push is on! This is their chance to take over the world, in their minds, and they ain't about to let this crisis pass.
If the Muslim Brotherhood, which I'm beginning to think is the Islamic version of the Boy Scouts from MSM reports, gets control, it is over. The entire Middle East falls and Obama won't do shiite to stop it.
Get over thinking that He really gives a shiite about you, America. The boy wonder has a larger plan, and "Who's your daddy" George Soros is the man behind the curtain.

The old versions flooded the system with chemcials in the hopes that the host body would be able to take more punishment than the cancer. An internal bio game of chicken, a powerdive of health hoping that the patient could pull up at the end, leaving off the cancer to crash.
This is what I take you to mean by this regime being in any way positive.
"Why are you smiling? You're hitting your self in the head with a hammer!"
"Yeah, but it's gonna feel so good when I stop."
And this poor country already had a asshat clown for eight long years in the globular shape of Fat Bill. I maintained then, and continue to maintain now , that the chief reason we are not more socialist now is his appetite-fed inefficiency (not just for food, Monica).
.Lately, though, I muse if he wasn't less pleasently distracted by the First Shrew and her shrill soundings-off. I wager in her prime she coud whine the galvanizing off of a ton of roofing nails at twenty paces.
To this day I wonder with some whole wheat humor (have to stay away from rye) about the following three scenarios:
1. DNA testing showing Chelsea is Hillary's, but not Bill's. (Hillary having found some time with someone with a hearing impediment.)
2. DNA testing showing Chelsea is Bill's, but not Hillary's (A harder but not impossible fake from the paperwork side of the street, and plausible given Fat Bill's notable roaming, to say nothing of gubernatorial groupies given to giving gynecological go-ahead to that glutton.)
3. DNA testing showing Chelsea, Hillary, and Bill having no common DNA to each other at all. (Again, a paperwork nightmare, but as simple as raiding a Arkansas orphanage in the dark of night. The high percentage of "accidents" keeping those in the know silent, either thru the gag of fear or the insulation of two yards of earth.)
And phooey, I've strayed. Apologies.

Our Constitution, instead, defines what the Government is not allowed to do to our citizens". That very concept is like fingernails on a chalkboard to liberals.

That is the course that the revolution in Tunisia is taking. Tunisia has a relatively well-developed middle class, women there enjoy greater rights and opportunities than in most Muslim countries, and the failed regime was secular in character. The prospects for democratic change are favorable.-George Soros
Wrong Georgie the events is Egypy have taken the world's eyes off Tunisia. The President has left, the new interm President can't get it together and there is no clear opposition leader. Radicals ie the Muslim Brotherhood are STILL protesting and the violence continues. The country is at a standstill. Shop owners armed with sticks and knives battled with rioters yesterday while protecting their businesses and the Army, not nearly as strong as Egypt's', is unable to regain control.
More have died in Tunisia since the President left than have died in Egypt this week. Don't expect the MSM to tell you that their calls for Mubarak to leave may send Egypt into the same type of chaos that allowed the mullahs to take control of secular Iran (most forget that Iran along with Lebanon were the most wealthy, cosmopolitan and secular mulim nations at that time until the radicals took control) and may cause secular Tunisia to fall. Egypt is not nearly as secular as those two countries so what will be the outcome there? Will anyone in the media ask that question.
Reagan was right on Iran...the Shah was taking on the mullahs which was why they rose up against him calling for a Democrat government which as we all know was the last thing they wanted.

Even Ted Kennedy, before he died, admitted that Reagan was one of the best Presidents this nation ever had. This was not the case when Reagan was President - as Kennedy was among those who demonized Reagan the most. Kennedy was always pointing at Reagan as the one who would cause nuclear war. He would bring about armageddon because he dared stand up, openly, to the communist Russian Bear.
Media excoriated Reagan just like it did W and to see today the lamestream media try to front as if it was with him all the way and it praised him at the time is quite ridiculous.

The MSM has shown how much of a lap dog they will be to support their chosen leaders. Over Christmas Obama decided to read up on Reagan, probably in response to an advisor's worry over a poll. The MSM then starts the rehablitation of Reagan. After all, if our Leader has chosen Reagan as an ideal the public perception they have promoted over the years would have to be cleaned up. We couldn't have Obama emulating a wild cowboy with no heart, could we? So now, near his 100th birthday, Reagan becomes a wise Grandfather. If Obama decides next month that after much reflection Reagan really was all those evil things said about him by the press, watch the MSM change gears, without missing, to say "Why, yes, after looking into new found archives That Fool Reagan guy really was ignorant, handled, sick, unaware, ......."
They don't even care what the perception of themselves is.

Dear Friend,
I would like your input on questions to ask at an upcoming hearing on the Federal Reserve’s money printing!
On Wednesday, February 9th, the Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology is holding a hearing titled “Can Monetary Policy Really Create Jobs?” The subcommittee oversees the Federal Reserve, and as Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee under Chairman Ron Paul, I will be there to ask questions and demand answers regarding the employment problems facing the people of the 3rd District of North Carolina and across this nation.
The Federal Reserve has been printing massive amounts of money as part of a policy they call “Quantitative Easing”. In fact, the Fed is on track to print roughly $2 trillion over the last two years. The Fed’s money printing has been driving up prices for business and working families, while it continues to bail out Wall Street. The people of Eastern North Carolina are struggling at the grocery store and the gas pump and I think it is time to hold the Fed accountable. Yada, yada, yada (my words)

It really does disappoint me that the MSM is giving so much love to someone who really doesn't deserve it. What do I think? Well, obviously, Reagan was better than Carter (then again, anyone is better than Carter, even Obama.) But was he good enough to be the greatest of them all? I don't know. From I had viewed of him, his administration seemed to only care about getting rid of porno from the 7 Elevens and such. From what I heard about the Iran-Contra situation (and I was listening to the Michael Medved show, so he's about as far from liberal conspiracy theories as you can get), I just found the business of sending weapons to both Iraq and Iran to use against each other seeming, how should I say it, a little low. I mean, we're supposed to be the greatest super power in the world, and what does that say about us when we take the coward's approach to diplomacy in that case? Why not just threaten Iraq and Iran with nuking both of them back to the Stone Age? At least that would show some courage by doing what Teddy Roosevelt always said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
I don't know, I just find the whole deity worship a little fishy. I'm not sure if the left ever went that overboard in trying to deify Obama, but if they did, it seems to me paling in comparison. Reagan sounded like a nice guy with his family and friends or such, but I don't think, to paraphrase the John Lennon saying, that Reagan was "bigger than Jesus."

Liberals claiming Reagan....
Submitted by truckinmann on Fri, 02/04/2011 - 3:55pm.
People are wondering why the liberals are touting Reagan as great, and how they are now like he was then. Not all liberals are stupid. They knew Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century all along. All it took for them to claim him was when the Republicans started to say "The era of Reagan is dead." This was basically the Republicans letting go of the one person that had held the party together for almost 30 years. The Democrats knew that Reagan is still the most beloved of the former presidents that a majority of Americans remember, so they picked up the abandoned winning ticket so to speak. Their only problem is that the people that liked and loved Ronald Reagan also remember how the Democrat party treated him and how the liberal media (which was all that existed at the time) tried their best to trash every policy he espoused. What was so great about him was that he was able to get his message out through an occasional press conference, and the public loved his message to the chagrin of the press. The left can try, and they can lie till they are blue in the face, none of them will ever be half as great a leader, or half the patriot of the President Ronald Reagan. Rest in Peace Mr. President. You did the United States of America proud!

McCain says Obama 'much more centrist,' 'Much' easier to work with...

This is one of the very good reasons why this guy should not be given the time of day and put out to retirement. And take his daughter with him.

For making demands of Egypt. McCain has become a Obama lap dog.

And I still can't believe he managed to get himself reelected to another Senate term, as he is little different than your garden variety dem.

it is a case of known evil versus unknown. The cold comfort that 2016 will be his last full year in any elected federal office must sting proper GOP members. I imagine Ohioans felt the same way about Glenn.
Nevadans are also in cold comfort mode... the whiny, pathetic, union-backed traitor of a toad that has fouled our senate seat for three decades is getting frailer and frailer. In some future time him and his departed running buddy, Sheets the Kleagle, will be down there shoveling coal.
It is to be hoped that the intermediate time be overflowing with wit, dedicatied to overwhelming the clever traps of reid and his party with greater cleverness and wit from our side.
