Biden Staffer, Former Time Reporter Jay Carney to Be Obama Press Secretary

By NB Staff | January 27, 2011 | 17:02

A  A

The Associated Press is reporting that former TIME magazine reporter and current Biden director of communications Jay Carney has been tapped to replace Robert Gibbs as White House press secretary. Carney is being credited for softening (and even destroying) the image of Vice President Biden as a gaffe machine -- as if the media haven't tried to help.

For our NewsBusters archive on Carney, whose Time byline was James Carney, click here.

UPDATE: The Washington Post explained the White House moves:

Carney, 45, who has served as communications director to Vice President Biden since 2009, spent his earlier career as a reporter, working his way up the hierarchy of Time magazine to become its Washington bureau chief. A Virginia native, he has earned a reputation in both journalism and politics for being smart and engaged - and, in his most recent capacity, for helping eliminate the image of Biden as simply a gaffe machine. While Carney has little experience with the press secretary's job of standing on the podium to face a barrage of reporter questions, he has been on television as a journalist ample times. The White House hopes he may be able to navigate the press corps more easily having come from its ranks.

With Carney's appointment comes a major structural shift: All of the operations of the press and communications shops will move under the control of communications director Dan Pfeiffer. Previously, the press shop had reported to the press secretary. Carney will technically report to Pfeiffer, something of a downgrading of that role, although they are expected to function as equals.

To tell the truth?

I am stunned, I thought that Bill Burton was the perfect lying mouthpiece when he stood in for Glibbs.

Well at least Carney can join the CIRCUS without blinking an eye.

"Carney"....... get it??????

Me too...I expected Burton to get the job...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Thu, 01/27/2011 - 5:36pm.

But I'm glad he didn't...He's almost as much an insufferably arrogant and snotty jerk as Gibbs is. I don't know much about Carney, outside of his work at Time, but imho, the fact that he has worked for Brainless Biden is hardly a ringing endorsement...Time will tell. At least we won't have to listen to or look at Gibbs anymore.

On a Biden-related note . . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 01/27/2011 - 5:29pm.

. . . . I saw VP Biden sitting alongside Boehner behind the President during the SOTU, and his face and expressions reminded me of a look-alike in the entertainment industry ---

"Walter" -- one of the dummies created by vantriloquist Jeff Dunham.

The resemblance is uncanny.  Could they be one in the same?

"Baghdad Bob" Gibbs was so good at his job that Carney has got some big hip boots to fill.

Carney has one in the plus column from me for referring to Chris Matthews as a "leg-tingling puddle of drool".

Ditto...My thoughts exactly...

That said, I wonder why Burton didn't get the job...Hmmm. Maybe after Gibbsy's snotty and seemingly interminable tenure, the WH decided to go another way. We'll see.

Bret Baier just reported that a "number of internal candidates" were considered, but Obama and Bill Daley were both "impressed" with Carney...Interesting.

Dems Throw Fit and Walk Out of Rules Committee Meeting, PA State

Submitted by im41 on Thu, 01/27/2011 - 5:57pm.

Tip

Democrats lost big in 2010 on the state level, so now they are resorting to theatrics, temper tantrums, shouting and throwing things to obstruct Republicans during a PA State House Rules Committee.

Better than....

Submitted by jaywl on Thu, 01/27/2011 - 6:24pm.

...the weasel-like Bill Burton or the newly available OlderandlouderMan. Actualy it is an odd pick since his primary duty for the previous two years was trying to keep Biden's mouth shut. Perhaps he will use his experience to tamp down on the BS coming from Obama, that way I won't be saying "Oh, shut the F up!" quite so often. It is a bad and disrespectful habit I have fallen into.
