CMI’s Dan Gainor Discusses MTV’s ‘Skins’ on ‘The Joy Behar Show’

By NB Staff | January 25, 2011 | 14:11

A  A

Vice President of Business and Culture Dan Gainor appeared on the January 24 broadcast of Headline News' “The Joy Behar Show" to discuss the raunchy new teen drama from MTV “Skins.” Gainor, who appeared on a panel with Tina Wells, CEO of Buzz Marketing Group and Rachel Sklar, editor at large for Mediaite.com, highlighted MTV’s blatant push for ratings and lack of consequences on “Skins.”

Video below fold

“No its voyeurism,” said Gainor. “Its teen sex, it’s the worst of behavior you can possibly have. If MTV could throw virgins into a volcano and sacrifice them or set puppies on fire, they’d do it to get ratings…They’re totally shameless and they’ve tried to create a show that has no consequences for the teens and what they’ve done is create a show that has a lot of consequences for MTV.”

The controversy over “Skins” and its potential legal trouble with portraying child pornography has caused the Parent’s Television Council to call for an investigation into whether or not laws are being broken with the underage actors. The teens on the show engage in reckless, illegal behavior that involves the use of drugs, alcohol and promiscuous sexual acts. So far, 5 advertisers have pulled their advertisements from the show.

I'm sure it's interesting, but I can't watch Joy Behar anymore.
A feeling of nausea overtakes me when I think of listening/watching her.

I applaud Behar for having Gainor on her show and especially for agreeing with the push against MTV. That's a step in the right direction.

If Skins is child porn....

Submitted by ckc1227 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 3:36pm.

.....then Rush is a raging racist, Tea Party members spit on black people, and Sarah Palin is responsible for the shootings in Tuscon.

Seriously, if we don't like it when the other side makes ridiculous claims, our side shouldn't do it either. Condemning the show on it's merits is fine, and there's plenty wrong to condemn without making things up.

→ Child Porn

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 3:39pm.

I haven't seen the footage.

I'm curious, though.  How do you know it's a ridiculous claim?  Was it originally made by someone who didn't see the footage?

Yes, it's child porn

Submitted by gopcongress on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 7:32pm.

I watched the first show, and there were three points where I would consider it child porn. Note my use of the CORRECT terms, "child boy" and "child girl", to accurately describe the actual parameters.

1. A child boy was kissing a child girl furtively, the boy with his hand under the child girl's pants, obviously massaging her privates.

2. A boy ran naked with an erection down the street. Though the show pixeled out his genitals, one of the child girls mentioned the word synomous with "erection".

3. A child boy and a child girl, both naked with only a blanket covering them, were making out heavily in the bed. Cutting from the scene to other boys and girls in the next room, they could hear some sex moans from the boy and girl couple having sex.

Yes, this show is child porn. Was this show produced in Canada or the US? If it was within our country, than where the hell is the city DA or the state AG involved in this???

Submitted by shawn. on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 4:12pm.

However we have to always make an effort to protect chidren before they are 18. I have not seen the show or the footage and I do not know if any laws have been broken, but our children come first.

What do you mean by

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 4:35pm.

What do you mean by condemning the show "on its merits"?

So you think that possible violation of child pornography laws should be disregarded if it's a "good" swhow?

That's a weak argument. If

Submitted by ant on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 5:50pm.

That's a weak argument. If Skins being equivalent to child porn is an exagerration, it does not equal an attempt to stifle free speech or freedom of assembly in the political/civic arena. Calling an entire shere of the American people (the Tea Party) violent bigots who should be shut down is not the same as disapproving of a pop culture TV program.

There are a lot of difficulties these days with the whole apples and oranges thing.

The SKINny on cause and effect

Submitted by Jack Bauer on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 4:10pm.

Of course, this type fictional behavior in a TV show, has NO AFFECT whatsover on ACTUAL TEENAGERS... by validating them in their bad behavior...

But Sarah Palin using a fairly well-used device of cross-hairs on a map causes a nutjob to murder people at a political event THREEYEARS LATER, even thougn he never even saw the supposed "trigger" to his violence.

See how this works?

Joy Behar ratings

Submitted by wingnut55 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 4:21pm.

I think Joy should include this site in her ratings because I believe more people see her on this site than watch her show live. As for Skins, it is simply child porn and the people responsible for this show should be tried and put into jail!

Submitted by bkeyser on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 8:20pm.

Heard Dan on one of my local talk radio stations last week; I wasn't aware he's a Baltimore area homeboy. I missed hearing his take on Cam Cameron though -I'll bet that was lively! Anyway, Dan and a few others were discussing Skins on WBAL. Great Job!
