Open Thread: Americans Vote With Their Feet
By NB Staff | December 27, 2010 | 10:50
Via Ed Morrissey, Gallup finds that all 10 of the states that lost House seats due to the new census numbers are majority-Democrat.
Nine of the 10 states that lost congressional seats as a result of this year’s census are in the Northeast or Midwest. The exception is Louisiana, whose population loss at least partly as a result of Hurricane Katrina cost it a seat. Politically, all 10 of these “losing” states skew Democratic in political orientation, based on Gallup’s latest state political identification data from January through June of this year. The two states that each lost two seats, Ohio and New York, have a net Democratic political identification of +7 and +19, respectively. The Democratic margin in the other eight losing states ranges from +20 in Massachusetts to +1 in Missouri.
Of course party affiliation is not the causal factor here, but there are a number of policies that Democrats consistently favor - and hence policies that are more likely to be in effect in blue states - that may be driving the shift. Ed Driscoll directs us to RealClearPolitics, where Diana Furchtgott offers one theory:
The American people have been voting with their feet, the Census Bureau announced on Tuesday, leaving states with heavy union influence and choosing to live in “right-to-work” states with higher job growth where they cannot be forced to join a union as a condition of employment. But the National Labor Relations Board, now dominated by Obama appointees, is deaf to the preferences of voting Americans. It wants to do everything in its administrative power to tilt the playing field towards unionization-even if it means higher unemployment and lost jobs.
And of course there's the tax issue, as Michael Barone noted:
Seven of the nine states that do not levy an income tax grew faster than the national average. The other two, South Dakota and New Hampshire, had the fastest growth in their regions, the Midwest and New England.
Altogether, 35 percent of the nation's total population growth occurred in these nine non-taxing states, which accounted for just 19 percent of total population at the beginning of the decade.
Which policy do you think is driving Americans from blue states? Or is an amalgam of left-wing policies responsible for the shift?

Yeah, all of the above seem plausable reasons for the population shifts evidenced by the census data, but I think it has more to do with Andrew Breitbart and Glenn Beck's conserted effort to bring down the corrupt wing of the Obama socialist regime known as A.C.O.R.N.
If they had administered the census, as the Ass Clown had planned, we would be seeing a whole different picture.

Exactly. Because the plan isn't about jobs, it's about unions.
Just like Obamacare isn't really about getting Americans health care; it's about taking over the health care industry.

It is only about the regimentation of every American's daily life and the strict, micromanaging control of every American's daily life.
It is all about His Majesty The Shahinshah's (and the Dems) desire to rule, not govern, the United States, and its subjects, err, citizens.

Voting with my feet
Submitted by Unsane on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 11:17am.
I'm voting with my feet - by staying put. When I am done with academia I want to be hired someplace in TX, just because I won't be subject to state income tax. And there are things I can do here I can't easily do in a "blue state" like NY, such as sleep every night with a Beretta in a drawer nearby, AND be ready to use it if necessary, AND not be charged by the local bullies if I do use it.

I sleep with a Beretta (92FS) loaded with 9mm hollow points in the night table next to my bed. My son, who lives in New York State isn't even allowed to possess a handgun without going through a 6 month long process to obtain permission from local authorities to own one. Apparently, the copy of the U.S. Constitution which authorities in New York State use omitted the word "not" which is in the second amendment, so their version states:
"....the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall be infringed."

So I guess the answer to the question is that yes, while money plays a major role in my decision to remain in TX, Leftist policies also account for a large part of the decision. I like being able to carry a gun with a CHL, and have one in my home, and I also like knowing that I can buy more guns and do so in less than 30 minutes, provided my address on my driver's license is current. (Even better if you have a CHL here in TX.) I also like being able to eat what I damn well please without some busybody trying to dictate how much salt or transfats I can consume. I also like to have a selection of restaurants (if I don't approve of MickeyDs, I need not go there, but since I like MickeyDs, I visit every so often) and stores to choose from (if I don't shop at Wal-Mart, it's because I found a better deal elsewhere, not because I am enraged at Wal-Mart's success).

The NFL cancels game because of the weather? WTF is up with that?
Many of us more rabid football fans have been seeing this coming for years. Frankly, I am surprised it didn't happen sooner, given the direction the NFL has been heading in recent years.
What will be next? Mandating domed stadiums and covered parking areas so the fans don't get wet or cold? Wrapping players in pillows? Banning tackling outright?
I bet Art Donovan is somewhere crying in his beer.

My theory
Submitted by Unsane on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 11:22am.
Dave, I suspect the issue might be that fans and personnel needed to support the game couldn't access the stadium. Hence postponement.
Or, at least, I truly hope that's the case. If not...the ONLY event that suspends or cancels football games, in terms of weather, is lightning. At least in my book.

What really chaps my hiney is the way the NCAA handled the 5 players at Ohio State. If they had palyed at an SEC or ACC they would be ineligable to play in their bowl games. They give these 5 players a 5 game suspension next season. They probably won't be around next season opting to go pro so there is no punishment.
I am still pissed over what they did to the Heels and I know you are over the way they did AJ Green.

but he/she isn't. They tend to vote with their feet if at all possible. The Dems keep raising taxes to make up for lost revenue, but it just exacerbates the problem. I've read cases of multi-millionaires who fled New York for Florida and saved thousands of dollars PER DAY in city/state taxes. What will tend to increase for the blue states will be the population of uneducated residents who require more expenditures for welfare, education, law enforcement and prisons. When you increase the incentives for the non-contributors in society to set up housekeeping in your state and raise taxes which encourage the contributors to flee,it becomes a vicious circle. This isn't rocket science.

I think trying to generalize
Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 11:27am.
I think trying to generalize a the results of a ten-year census through political lenses is a bit dubious at best, given how easy it is to relocate in the 21st century. And since there were two stiff recessions during that decade -the second drastically evident in the housing market- a person's locale may be a bit of a wild card.
But it's also clear that people are politically more in tune than ever, and pay closer attention to national issues at least as deeply as local issues. Even as recent as ten years ago, I'd hazard a guess that many people weren't aware of neighboring states' tax rates and certainly not the right-to-work status. Now, however, people have the ability -and the inkling- to research that sort of thing. Internet access has opened up a whole new world to people, especially during the most recent decade.
So, I think being better informed has led to decisions that otherwise would not have been made in years past; moving out of state vs. remaining close to the traditional home is probably one of those.
In summation, I blame George Bush (with a late push by Sarah Palin.)

The other two are practically in the arctic, but they did outgrow their taxing neighbors.
People are voting with their feet because of one issue (mostly). M O N E Y!!
Liberals want to take as much of your money as they can and spend it the way they want, because they are smarter than you, you jackwagons! Liberal policy is sinking every state that is controlled by democraps. The rest of us will eventually have to bail them out (i.e. pay their debts to the unions), so that the illusion can continue that they actually know what the hell is best for us. It really sucks.
I, personally, left a really high tax state to move to a nice warm no income tax state, and the money I save actually pays for living in this paradise! I'd be nuts NOT to be here! Hell, even the homeless who still can think migrate down here for the weather. If you're going to get drunk and sleep outside, where better! But liberals, who are soooooo damned smart, can't seem to get their mind around the simple economic fact that most Americans want to keep the money they earned.
Hey, I don't mind helping the down trodden, but paying expensive government employee salaries, and other union benefits ain't my idea of fair. Those ah, souls make more than ALL vets, and most private sector "workers." By the way, we're all "working class" if we earn money working.

Newsbubba, in a history class, I mentioned that last sentence of yours about a year ago. Not quite that way, but I followed up my comments on why "working class" was a stupid term with "What, you think Steve Jobs and Bill Gates don't work?"
It filled me with glee to see thos kids stop and think about it, and at least five of them said "I never looked at it like that before".
It reminded me of the scene in They Live when the subliminal messages were stopped somehow and everyone started coming down with headaches because they were so used to seeing them. :o)

I'm rereading an old book, "The Charm School," right now. The writer, Nelson DeMille didn't know it at the time (1988), but he practically forecast what has happened to us today. It is a great case for checking birth certificates and backgrounds of people who want to be high ranking government officials.

A long story, but I'm no history teacher. I know for a fact, though, that if I was turned loose in a high school classroom, I would be the BEST history teacher there ever was. Why? Because of my obsessive devotion to history, above all.
But the way I would teach history - making the poor dears write, write, and write some more - is complete anathema to the way public schools in the United States insist history be taught. So I will not be in a public school as a teacher, now - or possibly ever.

Regarding New York State: "The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource—people. From 2000 to 2008, in both absolute and relative terms, New York experienced the nation's largest loss of residents to other states—a net domestic migration outflow of over 1.5 million, or 8 percent of its population at the start of the decade...
...Households moving out of New York State had average incomes 13 percent higher than those moving into New York during the most recent year for which such data are available. In 2006-07 alone, the migration flow out of New York drained $4.3 billion in taxpayer income from the state...
...New York State’s net domestic migration loss during this decade is the continuation of a longer-term trend. During the 1990s, New York lost 1.7 million people to other states."

I love it when the true feelings of people win out over the propaganda of others. Many areas of our society have groups, political, religious, social, etc, that push agendas and try to ridicule any opposition. Rather than put up with the ridicule when the opposition speaks out, the people vote with their feet, and gravitate to places and organizations where they are respected and their ideas are appreciated. This is often done quietly, and the demographic, financial, and social results don't show up till later. Look at the states that have lost population. Look at the mainstream churches that tilted left for social reasons, not dogma, and have lost congregations. Look at newspapers and magazines that put the ideas of the left in the forefront of their coverage and have lost subscribers. The list can go on and on.
Meanwhile, the liberal politicians, activists, religious leaders, editors, etc, continue to pretend not to notice. They blame other factors as the society puts their boots on and walks away from the liberal elites.

I just wish I had a ticket, as Falcons/Saints games are seriously big fun to go to in the Dome, as half the people their are Saints fans. Been that way as long as I can remember.
I hope the Falcons have figured out a way to contain Reggie Bush, or it might be a long night for us.
GO FALCONS!
And it sucks that the Yellow Britches lost to Air Force tonight. :-(

Should be fun

Hawaii gov to release birth certificate
Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 10:04pm.
Can't wait for this to happen. CNN admitted what was released was a certificate of live birth, NOT a birth certificate as previously claimed.
This newly elected governor finds it insulting that people would DARE to question O's citizenship, as he knew the parents...Where was this guy when Bush was/is getting called every name in the book?
Well, that was a first for me

I have never seen pass interference called on both teams on the same play.
And Roddy White got screwed on the call, too, as he didn't push off the defender.

First for me also

The phantom blow to the head, and I guess running over Moore isnt pass interference either? The Zebras need to stay out of it, if they cant get it right
I hate zebras, especially vision-challenged ones

I just hope Mike Smith doesn't stroke out before this game ends.

Looks like the zebras finally got some glasses.

Damned shame, too, as it was a really good one. :-(

That's okay, as we'll just take it out on the Panthers next week
