Open Thread: In the Senate, GOP Finger-pointing

By NB Staff | November 04, 2010 | 09:25

A  A

Politico reports today that Senate Republicans have let tensions spill into public view over who is to blame for the GOP's inability to take the Senate. "If you think what happened in Delaware is ‘a win’ for the Republican Party then we don’t have a snowball’s chance to win the White House," said South Carolina's Lindsey Graham, who channelled the establishment view. "If you think Delaware was a wake-up call for Republicans than we have shot at doing well for a long time."

RedState editor Erick Erickson fired back on his blog, excoriating the RNC and the NRSC for, in his view, being too heavy-handed in the candidate-selection process and virtually absent in the latter stages of the election. His entire piece is well-worth a read, but here's the key portion:

GOP Senate candidates underperformed their polling at around 3% in most races. Why? Because the NRSC did not fund a ground game operation, nor did the RNC. They either left it to Karl Rove or Haley Barbour. There was not, as in past years, a mass exodus of GOP Hill Staffers from Washington to the ground in swing states.

But there is an even greater, larger point. None of this would have happened had the NRSC not decided to dictate to Republicans in the several states who their Republican candidates should be. Christine O’Donnell’s and Sharron Angle’s wins were largely reactions to what the NRSC was doing.

Compare this with the House campaign body, the NRCC. After getting clobbered over the NY-23 race and Dede Scozzafava, the NRCC took a hands off approach and let local voters choose their candidates. Not the NRSC. It doubled up around the country igniting a civil war with the grassroots — a civil war that would have never happened but their getting into Florida and doubling down.

The NRSC’s argument amounts to telling the world that voters exercising their right to pick their candidates are stupid and Jim DeMint is stupid for siding with the voters.

Where do you come down on this debate?

They Still Don't Get It

The voters did not vote for Republicans - they voted out Democrats (and some Republicans in the primaries).

I'm sure that Linday Graham and others are incapable of admitting the obvious. There is still a long, hard road to reducing and weakening the big-government leviathan. Keep the pressure on!

Politico article

The Democrats at Politico are, as usual, trying to provoke division among Republicans.

Fact is, the GOP wouldn't have been within smelling distance of the majority if it hadn't been for DeMint and the Tea Party.

Fact is, the GOP won a higher percentage of Senate races than they did House races.

And any journalist who thinks Lindsay Graham, architect ot McCain 2008, is an expert on Republican victory, needs to get his head examined.

In the realm of non-Politico math where the rest of us live, Governor Palin endorsed 82 candidates (NOTE: these numbers are taken from the candidate list at sister site, Organize4Palin. There are a few candidates whom SarahPAC gave money to or Governor Palin recorded robocalls for that are not listed) in the general election with at least 52 of those candidates winning (as of Wednesday night, 8 races had not yet been called).

The problem is, that without some party help, the grassroots will nominate any candidate other than the establishment candidate without fully vetting the person.  Look at the losers from Tuesday night, they came off as extreme anti-government or extreme religious, neither of which appeal to the independents or moderates.  Extremes from either party serve little purpose other than being a freak show and cannon fodder for the party, i.e. Grayson in Florida.  The party leaders need to support the choice of the people, but they should use their resources to fairly vet those who seek the nomination and bring all of the facts forward to the people to make an informed choice, otherwise you get what we had here in Colorado with Dan Maes.

No.  The real problem is that

Submitted by fitzfong on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:16pm.

No.  The real problem is that the NRSC is not interested in advancing a conservative agenda.  It is interested in self-preservation...even if that means indulging spoiled, unprincipled, dead weight hacks like Mike Castle, Mark Kirk and Charlie Crist.  The Republican Party should have learned one lesson above all from the Scozzafava debacle...conservatives will not accept having the party machinery choose fraudulent candidates on their behalf.  Mike Castle is unacceptable.  Period.  But the arrogant NRSC endorsed and financially supported a handful of leftist frauds like Mike Castle, Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist, so the conservatives told Cornyn and Company to kindly f*** off.  The fact that Angle, Buck, Paul, Toomey, Rubio and O'Donnell were courageous enough to step up and represent the conservative base of the Republican Party when cowards like Cornyn were trying to force RINO scum on us speaks volumes for their character.  If only the NRSC had less self-regard and more self-awareness, they wouldn't have rushed to shove crap RINO candidates on us and instead would have given time for more seasoned, yet appropriately conservative candidates to enter the arena and win nomination organically.

Rove was wrong.

Submitted by mattm on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:30am.

According to Coulter, O'Donnell never really had a chance anyway.  So, what do we do, put up a liberal RINO just to win a seat?  Rove is a an election strategist, not a political strategest.  He can get someone elected, maybe, but so what?  Wouldn't it be better in the long run to have a Liberal Democrat screw up in office, than a liberal Republican who will hurt the GOP brand?

Many people say "politicians are all the same" - RINOs who refuse to distinguish themselves from Democrats are responsible for this attitude. What difference does it make if a senator has an (R) next to his or her name, or what difference does it make if the GOP controls the Senate, if they're just going to vote like Democrats?

This is the problem with the "election strategists" who look at each election only as a separate event, and not also as part of a long train of events.  Helping the Lindsay Grahams and Mike Castles win elections does more harm than good to the GOP in the long run.

If Rove and other strategists had supported O'Donnell from the get-go, and stood up for her when she was unfairly attacked, she not only would have done much better, but the GOP would have gotten a good message out, and would have gained potential future voters.  But, by coming out against her right away - even though she won the primary, they gave both her and the GOP a black eye.  They not only blew a golden opportunity to eductate the voters, they also blew any credibility they might have for future electoral victories.

If I was a Delaware TEA Partier, I'd form  a new political party and break off from the GOP - which, apparently, still doesn't get it.

You're missing the point.

Submitted by mattm on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:55am.

You're missing the point.  Sure, Rove was good at winning elections, but the point is, there is nothing to be gained by electing RINOs.  He should have supported O'Donnell, win or lose.

Rove only looks at the microcosm - the demographics, the present state of things, which is great, if all you care about is winning elections.  But if you care about advancing an agenda, you have to look at the big picture over the long term. Rove and others like him fail to do this.

So, either way, the brilliant strategist Rove would have hurt tyhe GOP - either by helping a RINO get elected, or by hurting a real conservative.  By failing to support O'Donnell, Rove actually helped Coons destroy her.

Great analysis Matttm

Submitted by exLib on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 2:41pm.

I totally agree with what you are saying.

A great example is on the other side.  Howard Dean's strategy for 06 and 08 was an "every state strategy" to win as many seats as possible.

So, in conservative districts were conservatives/Republicans had consistently won, Dean found people who would run as staunch conservatives but also as Democrats.

With the media's help, and Bush's horrible approval ratings many won and The Dems had a filibuster proof majority.

However, I am sure Dean, Peolosi and Reid all told them that they were eventually to be a rubber stamp for their agenda.   Whether or not any of their resistance in the beginning was sincere or just a cynical ploy to convince the voters that they were "trying to hold the line" the fact is allot of these people voted with Obama on Healthcare when they said they wouldn't

In the end, that strategy played a major role in Republicans winning back allot of seats and hopefully a smarter electorate when they hear Democrats pretending to be conservative.

What the media rarely if ever talk about is the left-wingers don't want guys like Lieberman around or the guy who just won in West Virginia (i think).

Ann Coulter has an

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:10am.

Ann Coulter has an interesting take on the election results.

Interesting grafs:

We had a wave. We had an enormous wave, a tidal wave, a wave that produced more than 60 seats in the House in the biggest party turnover since 1948. But Democrats still won all Senate races that were tied in the polls. The fact that the close races were all in solidly Democratic states had more to do with the outcome than the "wave." Demographics matter, not "waves."

[  ]

Republicans never had a chance to take the Senate, and anyone who knows the difference between California and Tennessee knew that. Most of the Senate seats up this year happened to be in very, very "blue" states. Short of a Republican invasion of the body snatchers, Republicans weren't going to be electing senators from California, New York and Oregon.

My takeaway from this:

Republicans shouldn't be starry-eyed about Tea Party candidates.  It's not just about "pure" conservatives vs. RINO's.  It's about putting up Tea Party-type candidates who can actually win.

Your "takeaway" is slightly mistaken.  It most certainly IS just about  ""pure" conservatives vs. RINO's."  That's the whole point!

Coulter's point was that no TEA Party candidate was going to win in Delaware.  This was an opportunity to provide voters with a real alternative that could begin to make inroads for the future.  By attacking O'Donnell rather than supporting her, election strategists, like Rove, have done almost as much harm to the GOP as Mike Castle and other RINOs have done.

Rove blew it.  He should have supported her.  (This goes for those RINOs who went against Joe Miller in Alaska, too)

all I'm saying is that  it's no advantage to have a "pure" conservative lose.

The net result is a wash.

You know what a "moral victory" is?  That's what the loser claims.

I agree with you that they should support Tea Party candidates.  But a big part of the problem is putting forth attractive candidates who have a chance.  (Can you say Marco Rubio?)

In Delaware, they should have found a candidate with a little more heft, and in Connecticut a candidate who wasn't a joke waiting to be written, right out of the starting gate.

Submitted by mattm on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:31am.

I don't disagree with getting better candidates, but GOP strategists like Rove should support the candidate the voters chose in the primary, or if they can't stomach that, then they should just not say anything.  What good did it do, after the primary, for Rove and the RINOs to join O'Donnell's detractors rather than support her?

They not only hurt her chances, but they hurt the chances for the GOP to make inroads for the future.  They do this all the time.  It's one of the reasons TEA Party candidates won so many primaries. This was not just a referrendum on the Democrats, but on the RINOs, too...

Agreed about support of the nominated candidate. Just STFU and let the voters decide the election, idiot. This is yet another instance of political fence-riders being political fence-riders. Yeah, I'm looking right at you Lindsey "Aw shucks" Graham. As far as Rove is concerned, he is in full-on survival mode; he realized after the fact (whenever he got hammered about it on TV by REAL conservatives) that he screwed up bashing CO'D. He figures, professionally speaking, that he has to stand by his prediction, no matter what influence it may have had on the outcome of the election. Hell, nearly 20% of Republicans in Delaware did not vote for CO'D. Nice job Rove and Delaware folks.

The folks in those states put up the best candidate that they could find that was willing to run. You're not happy because what, they didn't pick someone that you liked? Tough cookies. Unless you were there, campaigning for someone else in the primaries, you're just part of the problem, not part of the solution. In short, you are NB's pale copy of Karl Rove.

I agree with you there mattm.  I think that O'Donnell would have done much better if she had the backing of the GOP.

When she surprised them all by winning the primary from RINO Castle they acted like spoiled brats.  Sure they gave the maximum donation they were permitted but sore loser Castle would not come out and endorse her and we did not hear anything else from the GOP.  Rove comes out the next day and disparages her and no one in the GOP stands up for her in the attacks from the MSM on her.  Does that help a candidate win over potential voters?

The GOP blew it as far as I am concerned.

2012....Funny You Should Mention That

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:31am.

Lindsey Graham needs a big cup of STFU.  Karl Rove, John Cornyn and the NSRC, too.  Here's Sen. Cornyn endorsment of Charlie Crist....on the very day he announced, May 12, 2009.  Get thee out of my primary, you doddering old fool!

"While I believe Marco Rubio has a very bright future within the Republican Party, Charlie Crist is the best candidate in 2010 to ensure that we maintain the checks and balances that Floridians deserve in the United States Senate," Cornyn said in a statement.

"Governor Crist is a dedicated public servant and a dynamic leader, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee will provide our full support to ensure that he is elected the next United States Senator from Florida.”

The committee’s decision will make it tougher for former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio to raise money against Crist, given that the party has given the governor its stamp of approval. Rubio has won support from Florida conservatives and has a base in the Cuban-American community, but will need to raise a significant amount of money to credibly compete against Crist in the primary.

WRONG!!!!   How'd that work out, eh?  Who is pointing fingers about Florida's Senate race, Lindsey?

The entrenched republicans are a greedy bunch.  They can get down on their knees and thank the Tea Parties for the gains on Tuesday.  We need to flood their offices with our message, since they apparently didn't get it and think it's going to be business as usual with our new representatives.

Finally, I already put up a Forum Topic....who is up in the Senate in 2012.  There's a list, and a couple of links.  I think it would be a great way for us to begin the education process about who we have, who needs to stay, and who needs to go, and who we'd like to have.

I started.  Bye bye Bill Nelson, hello Jeb Bush in 2012.  Although Marco might find it a bit odd to have his old mentor as the junior senator...it works for me.

B, you are SO right about Graham...

And I would add Eric Cantor in that assessment too, if he's going to "lead" like he did during the "health care summit."

Republicans including John McCain and Eric Cantor joined Democrat tax cheat Charlie Rangel and spendocrat Henry Waxman, along with Obama corrupto-cronies such as the SEIU’s Andy Stern in a boot-licking session with Dear Leader.

He gathered them all in a press conference setting and called on them as if they were journalistic stenographers.

Obama paid lip service to bipartisanship. They paid lip service to bipartisanship. Obama declared the need to fix health care. They declared the need to fix health care. Obama said we had budget problems. They nodded their heads and bemoaned our budget problems.

Cantor is a snake in the grass.

It's going to be very interesting to see how Allen West reacts when the "powers that be" like Cantor try to tell him where to sit and how to vote.  I think he'll probably grab the gavel and....well, you know the rest.

Packages

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:09am.

To win in politics, you need to have some things going for you:

  • You need an open seat or a poor incumbent
  • You need to espouse a reasonable ideology
  • You need a personality or character that's attractive

Having one or the other isn't enough. You need a healthy amount of all of them.

My take is that the RINOs don't care about ideology, and that's a problem. But the tea party needs more attractive candidates. That's also a problem. The obvious fix is to come up with attractive candidates who stick to conservative philosophy. That's the full package.

  • From the beginning of this tea party movement, I worried about people who really don't have a strong devotion to what the tea party is about, but who saw the tea party as a way to run-around the normal vetting process. In other words, if they couldn't make it as a regular Republican candidate, they hoped that shouting that they're "tea party" and "I'm just like you" would shield them from scrutiny.

Sarah Palin is the archetype of this issue. I like her personally, and I certainly endorse all of the things she stands for. She has the ideology, I think. But does that mean that she would make a strong president? I'm really not sure. Two years after the fact, I'd judge that she was unprepared and unready to be president in 2008. But is she ready now? Frankly, that's what a campaign is about. Now that she's been through one, and she's endured the barrage of the media, maybe she'd be a much stronger candidate. Who knows? We won't find out until she goes through a campaign, when she's more seasoned and prepared.

The same applies to other tea party candidates. Christine O'Donnell wasn't ready, and my suspicion is that she never will be. I never got a good feeling from Sharron Angle. Maybe she'd do better next time around. But they weren't ready this time.

The answer is not to reject the tea party, as the Lindsay Graham wing clearly wants. The answer is to start putting together the whole package.

Good Candidates Bad Party Infrastructure.

Submitted by libBuster on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:36am.

It is not the candidates, it is the Republican Party's presentation of the candidates that falls short.

The Progressive media/political manchine absolutely excoriates and marginalizes conservitive  Republican candidates and particularly women such Sharon Angle, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachman and Christine O'Donnell.  Look what the Washington Post did to George Allen. Who on earth is ready for a public lynching?

Obama, Coons and Biden could easily be caricatured and marginilzed if the media chose to do so.    We had a Democratic Senator apparently intoxicated  on the Senate Floor, but Joe Wilson gets all the heat for a "you lie" comment. These Democrats, man by man, or woman by woman are every bit as flawed as the people you mentioned. But the Democrats cannot  fail in the media template.  The failings go largely unreported.

If the Republican Party had an effective ground game,  publicity machine and candidate funding,  perhaps candidates such as Palin, O'Donnell and Angle would stand a better chance. The Republicans need to figure out a way to respond to the unremitting ad-hominem attacks from the left on outlets such as "The View", "Bill Maher", MSNBC and CNN.

With respect, the candidate still matters

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:51am.

I'm not sure we can lay the blame entirely at the feet of the party apparatus. The candidates themselves take the lead in how they approach the media, how they counter the liberal opposition, and how they navigate through the land-mines that the media set for them. Other candidates handled that and got their name and message out, facing the same stacked deck and hostility against them.

The party organization can help, but they don't run each campaign. That's up to each candidate.

Greater Burden

Submitted by libBuster on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:43am.

The candidates do matter.   But Republican candidates face a much higher media bar than Democratic candidates. Not every conservative candidate will be as media savvy as Ronadl Reagan out of the gate.  Very few are equiped to counteract a media onslaught alone.  The double standard means the Republicans need better organization and media training for their candidates.

Chris Coons did not face a derisive media.  O'Donnell did.  Barack Obama had an adoring media. Sarah Palin was portrayed as a fool. Joe Biden makes regular gaffes that go unreported. Sharon Angle is called a "b*tch" to applause on the Democratic Party rallying show "The View".

The Republican Party must increase its media awareness.

But there are no signs of a dramatic rebound for the party, and the chance of Republicans winning control of either chamber in the 2010 midterm elections is zero. Not “close to zero.” Not “slight” or “small.” Zero.

Yes, that's right: ZERO. So, forgive me while I yawn at predictions.

If you think Mike Castle is an example of what's right with the Republican party, then you're an example of what's wrong with the Republican party.

Did the Tea Party make some bad choices? Possibly. Does that happen every election cycle, no matter who we're talking about? Absolutely. If you think a few wrong choices are a problem, then you're one of the most naive politicians on the planet.

My advice for Lindsey Graham: Sit down. Shut up. Get out of the way.

In O'Donell's case, hers was a very late primary and unlike Marco Rubio, who had both the time and the money to let the voters know who is is, O'Donnell had little time to change the voters' minds about the slurs cast about by the MSM.  The media had tried to cast Rubio as extreme, but he was able to debunk the media meme before the election.

Republican candidates have to fight both the Democrat party AND the biased liberal media, so there is a dual difficulty that can only be disproved by large ad buys.  Also, Conservative women are SAVAGED by the press- especially if they are attractive and accomplished.  Sexist, vulgar language is repeated ad nauseum in attacking Conservative women.  Alinsky tactics proliferate in the MSM and any Republican candidate must be prepared for it- and it takes time an money to counteract it.

We should make a list of the "accusations" that the MSM dreamed up against GOP candidates- NB, it might be a service for the next set of Republicans vying for office.  The attempt to smear Joe Miller envisioned by the Alaska CBS affiliate is just the beginning.  I'll start.

Allen West- "connection" to a biker gang

Rand Paul- "aqua Buddha"

Christine O'Donnell- witchcraft and bogus "one night stand"

Sarah Palin- too numerous to mention, but the AK lawsuits over "corruption" and Trig is not her child, spring to mind

Graham is a part of the problem in the GOP, as is John McCain (and possibly, John Cornyn, unless he gets called on it).  McCain and Graham are EXACTLY the reason that Republicans lost the confidence of the American people during the Bush years.  They stood for nothing, so they would fall for anything.  Abandoning their principles is what caused a Democrat shift in Congress.  Why NOT vote for the Dems if the Republicans are just Democrat "lite?"

South Carolina- go out and find a real conservative to replace Lindsey Graham- you will be doing a great service to the nation and to the Republican Party.

Tex Mom

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:48am.

Let me clear a few things up about Marco Rubio.

First of all, the RINO Mel Martinez resigned his seat in the middle of his term, IMO to "give" the seat to Charlie Crist.  Charlie, of course, was at that time effectively hiding his naked political ambition, so instead of appointing himself (remember, he had a 70% approval rating at the time), he appointed a place-holder, George LeMieux (who is now thinking of running against Bill Nelson in his own right).

Marco Rubio had declared his intention to run for this seat early on.  In May of 2009, Charlie declared, and on the very same day, Sen. John Cornyn, on behalf of the Senate Republicans, endorsed him (I linked it in a post above).

I was furious at the time, and wrote John Cornyn a rather pointed e-mail.  And I'm going to write another one today, inasmuch as these dolts apparently haven't gotten the message yet.

Back to Rubio/Crist.  With that endorsement, Crist shot out to a 30 point lead!!  Marco slogged it out, over the summer of Health Care Town Halls, and Crist continued to veer left, embracing some of Obama's agenda in order to capture the left leaning independents.

You know the rest.  Today we have Senator-Elect Rubio.

But Marco didn't start as the favorite.  He started as a 30 point underdog.  He did us a huge favor by upending the "Republican Machine"....who clearly wanted to elevate one of the squishy, middle-of-the-road elites to the Senate.

Finally, I might add, Jim DeMint was the first "big" name to get behind Marco, and for that, we owe him our thanks.  I'm encouraged that Marco will have a great mentor in the Senate, to help him navigate the rocks and shoals of the establishment, who will surely try to "capture" him for their own ends.  Scooby linked to a DeMint authored article in the WSJ yesterday, where DeMint advises the incoming members to avoid politics as usual.

I am not agreeing completely with Rove et al.  But, almost certainly NV (baring any union interference) and possibly DE could have been (R) pickups.  Rove and Co. are at fault and should have kept their mouths shut and/or fallen in line with support after the election of CO!

AZ - Kyl (96.75),     IN - Lugar (77.26),     ME – Snowe (47.88),     MS – Wicker (90.80),     NV – Ensign (94.37),    TN – Corker (83.33),     TX – Hutchison (89.77),    UT – Hatch (89.15),    WY – Barrasso (98.67).

On the other hand, there are 23 entrenched Democrats and 1 “Independent” (CT’s Lieberman) up for reelection…  Things are looking good!

Conservatives will not win with a third party, simple math, too many "independents," or, as i call them, complacent complicites.

We missed a few opportunities this time around, not getting rid of McCain, for example.

We have to keep pushing the Republican party back to the "true center."  The center of this country, that is, the Constitution.

Graham and others will show their colors over the next two years, by offering "compromise" to the liberals, and even criticizing the conservatives in their parties.

We make the list, check it twice, vote OUT the RINOs next time around.

While I'm real happy with the Republican Majority attained in the House, I'm real disappointed that some Republicans are going to do their "compromising" after all, such as Issa.  I only hope that the way Issa is doing things is to sucker some Democrats in, including the Chairman, and drop the hammer right then and there.  After the raking over the coals given to him by Rush Limbaugh on air, I thought he would avoid showing even a hint of "compromising."

I'm also disappointed with the Senate races, like in O'Donnel's case, I blame that on Rove.  This nonsense that she was given didn't help anyone any damn bit at all.  The same goes with Angle in Nevada versus Reid.  Speaking of Reid, he's already pretty much said there won't be any cooperation, big surprise there.(on tax cuts)

And so it goes.  Several states have proved themselves stupid, I personally pretty much wrote off California, New York, Nevada(will never go back to Vegas or anywhere there), and a few other locations.  I mean, geez, why spend my money on stupid states?  Some of you on here from those states, you know what I mean from the chatzy session we had election night.  It's like what Rush said, if you want all those things that are anti-American like more taxes, more lost jobs and etc, vote Democrat.  Those states did and that's the bottom line.  You people who value freedom might as well move out of those states.  Just a friendly suggestion.

So in the end, what are we left with?  Despite what was said at the so-called press conference where the Chairman was obviously unhappy, I don't see him cooperating at all.  He has stuck to his guns ever since usurping the White House, that's like asking a leopard to change its spots.  Reid will be the same way.  He lost his comrade Pelosi come next year.  The only people he can rely on will be just in the Senate.  Given the way things are with him, he will pull out every trick he can think of, including illegal ones, to keep things from happening for the good of the American people.

God help us.

Simple Message for Republican Party

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:14am.

The results of the Senate races of 2010 should send a simple message to the Republican Party.  Republicans can win the Senate and advance conservative legislation, but only if they run good candidates who appeal to both solid conservatives, (ie., Tea Party), and independents and the vanishing middle-of-the-road democrat.  I admire what Angle and O'donnell achieved, but they were flawed candidates from the start.  If they run Rinos, conservatives are going to stay home in the general election..

They need to stop pushing Rhinos in the primaries and find solid conservative candidates who have political appeal to independents as well.  The first step is changing the leadership of the Republican party and that first step was just acomplished.

My mission accomplised

Submitted by ricklail on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:22am.

I had tow things I wanted to happen when I went to vote. I wanted to get rid of my county commissioner and state representative. That was accomplished with icing on the cake. Republicans took control of the Craven County Board of Commisssioners and Republicans now control both chamber of the NC General Assembly. That hasn't happened since 1898. It means they will be the ones to draw the new congressional districtts. I have already contacted my new state rep and told him the number one priority was to get rid of the 2 gerrymandered districts in this state

Lindsay Grhamnesty is an idiot...

Submitted by ChiefMinion on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:23am.

With apologies to idoits everywhere...

Where to begin?

Even if by some miracle, the GOP wins WA & CO, then Angle and O'Donnell alternatives, assuming they would have won, would have only put the GOP at 50, still short of what they need.  Worse, we would have two more squishy RINO's like Lindsey, his mentor who shall not be named, and the weak sisters from Maine.

The NRSC had just the candidate they wanted in CA, a self funded successful woman.  Being a tiny bit to the right of a true RINO, she might have been a bit too conservated for Lindsey, but nobody's perfect.  Carly got smoked by one of the most liberal Senators in the ruling class.  Boxer has a terrible record, decades long, running into a stiff head wind and in the end, it wasn't close.  All Carly and Meg did was manage to blow enough money to win a lot of elections elsewhere in the country and LOOSE against terrible, flawed leftists in a year when CA actually voted fairly conservatively on their ballot initiatives.  Well Lindsey?  Are those crickets I hear?

Lindsey isn't talking about FL.  I wonder why?

There is a really big issue here that Eric touches on.  In a number of states, the GOP senate candidate under performed the pre-election polling.  Granting that the polls may be flawwed, this is still too much to ignore.  I think it can only be explained by one thing.  No ground game.  The GOP says they were out of money.  Well first, you save some money for that.  Second, why out of money?  Could it be that people (like me) will no longer give you a dime to piss it away in fetish clubs, on useless mailers, and on candidates that turn our stomachs?  (I donate to candidates directly now.  The various GOP organizations get not one thin dime after the 2006 debacle.)

The NRSC, Rove, etc were too busy pouting over Angle and O'Donnell's primary wins to get behind the sled and start pushing.  Heaven forbid we conservatives sit out an election when they are running a RINO, but it is ok for them to pick up their toys and go home in a snit when they don't get what they want?

Conservatives (as opposed to the GOP) won a great victory on Tuesday.  We didn't win all the skirmishes.  That never happens.  But the battle was won.  Realize that this is just the first major battle in what will be a long, long war.  Take a day or two to celebrate.  Then is it back to work because one election isn't going to fix this.  One more election isn't going to fix this.  It is going to take many elections and years of tireless work to restore America.

When will SC put this southbound end of a northbound horse out to pasture?  To any conservative considering a primary challenge to this tool, my checkbook is "locked and loaded" awaiting the campaign.

I'll Go With Sarah's Response

Submitted by Chris Of Rights on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:25am.

See here.

But even more to the point, we saw in the last decade what happens when conservatives hold their noses and elect liberals who have an “R” after their names. Our party’s message of freedom and fiscal responsibility became diluted. In 2008, it was difficult to claim on the one hand that we were the party of fiscal responsibility and on the other hand that our fiscal policies work. It was clear to the electorate that the GOP had not adhered to fiscally conservative positions, and that the liberal positions they did adhere to didn’t work. If we go on in that direction again, we won’t have a base, let alone a majority. Certainly we can and should back sensible center-right candidates in bluer states, but I see no point in backing someone who supports cap-and-tax, Obamacare, bailouts, taxes, and more useless stimulus packages.

Bingo.

New York Governor

Well, New York elected a governor that is shacked up with Sandra Lee, probably the Food Network's worst cook.

Help us Paula Deen, we need you now!!

Here is one of Ms. Lee's recipes.  I hope she can get it cooked in time for Hanukkah.

LOL, Gotham

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 12:32pm.

Sandra Lee, without a doubt, is the worst cook on FN.  However, she is a self-made millionaire.

Remember those AWFUL window treatments in the 90's?  (I know, you probably don't, but I do).....she invented them!  She made some little coat hanger thingies and invented bizarro ways to pull fabric through them.  She did this as a broke student, IIRC, and then sold them at craft fairs, eventually went national via shopping TV.  Millions upon millions of women bought these things and did freak show decorations in their homes.  I know....I was appalled to see them in my own sister's place!

Give me Alton Brown any day of the week.  Whenever I look for a recipe on FN, it's Alton & Ina for perfect recipes, Paula for inspiration (her recipes are often not well written.....but if you haven't done it yet, try her pot roast w/the can of mushroom soup, it can't be beat!!!), and Bobby & Tyler in a pinch.

I didn't know that about Sandra.  I hope she's kept some of her entreupreneurial sense and will influece Cuomo to go easy on small business owners.  NY really needs a shot in the arm.

I like to watch Alton but I'm always a bit scared to try his recipes.   They seem really, really involved.

I like some of Ina's recipes, but I can't stand her show.  I hate how she's always doing everything for "Jeffrey".   Plus I think she's a choco-holic.  I wouldn't be surprised to go to her house and find a bar of chocolate stashed behind the toilet.

I love Paula Deen because she reminds me of my aunts.  They're from the South and they are just like her.  I think Paula stole her line "It's so good, it makes you want to slap your Momma" from one of my aunts.  Plus Paula has a recipe for bread pudding made out of Krispy Kreme donuts.  It will put you into diabetic shock, but what a way to go!

I also like America's Test Kitchen on PBS.  So I have to hold my nose while I watch it knowing that PBS is government funded (and liberal minded)

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 3:05pm.

Agree about Ina, her show is a PITA, but her recipes are perfect.  Try her tabbouleh.

Now...get off your fright of Alton's stuff.  It only looks complicated, because he's so precise.  He uses weights and measures and stuff, but if you're an accomplished cook, it's easy to overlook that kind of stuff.

If you want to do yourself a favor, try Alton's Egg Nog recipe for the holidays.  I'm not a big Egg Nog fan myself, but I live with a couple.  The stuff is expensive, so last year I decided to give it a whirl.  Needless to say, using Alton's recipe, (I did a double batch)....I was making it every day for the holiday season.  It is fantastic (I do the temper method because my elderly mom lives w/me, no raw eggs for her).

Paula is hilarious, did you see her poach the lobster in 4 lbs of butter?  I was rolling on the floor.  I'm rather fond of her, as I learned to make gravy from a great southern lady, who was from Tuscaloosa.   Southern cooking rocks, eating in moderation only, unfortunately.

Mmmmmm.  Nothing better than derailing (well, not really, it's the OT) a convo with cooking.

Blonde:

My niece has been making Emeril Lagasse's egg nog for years for Christmas.  Very good.

Just received the new second edition of America's Test Kitchen cookbook that now has 11 years of the show's recipes, including 2011 which has yet to air.  The indexing could be better, and they don't index to Year/Episode (damn shame if you have the series -- I cross-reference from Wikipedia's episode list), but it has all you need to make the dishes.  Vodka pie crust here come!

Had the lemon chicken last night.  A number of steps but really tasty.

2012 Senate Race

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:31am.

Here's a map of the senate seats up for election in 2012.  There are currently 21 Democrat seats and 10 Republican seats up for election in 2012, (and two liberal independents).  Looking at the states in play, it's not a big leap to realize that 2012 can give the Republicans a solid majority in the Senate, with a strong possiblity of pushing landmark legislation (ie, repealing health care and shrinking the federal government), with the help of only a handful of Dems.  But to get that 55-60 majority, they will need to run qualified conservative candidates.

The GOP needs to keep saying

Submitted by Hunter12 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 11:42am.

The GOP needs to keep saying "No" to extreme spending and work to repeal all the bureacracy in the healthcare bill.  The thinking that we can keep these agencies and put our own people in there will lead to a major disaster for them in 2012.  O'Donnell and Angle didn't lose because they were bad candidates.  They had uphill fights against liberal machines.  The NRSC needs to fund true conservatives.  Until they get their heads from behinds and learn to do this, they won't be squandering my money.

Side Note:  Give up the robocall crapola.  A pre-taped message isn't going to sway anyone's opinion.  It just piffes people oss.  I don't know which ad agency sold politicians that this was a good campaign tool.  They're probably laughing all the way to the bank.

If they were going to number the comments, they should have linked it to the time stamp. You were #71 when you posted, as of my reply, you're #83. Numbering isn't really needed in my view, but it's a reference point if it's not constantly fluxuating. It might add some interest to the reader though, if it actually reflected the sequence of posts to the thread. What do you think?

[Edit] I also notice that the format seems wider, and the thread pages are only two columns instead fo the three on the home page. Not sure when this happened or if it's been duly noted already- sometimes I'm slow on the uptake.

But good job NB- we can see you're working at it and it's getting better as promised. Keep at it!

I made that same observation about the numbering on the day the "new" site was rolled out.  It needs to be a fixed link numbering system, not a relative one.

They are madly working on the fixes here, we now have tracking back, too.  If we can get the width issue (i.e. fill the screen) down, I'll be pretty happy.

Oh yeah, and a way to get rid of all of the social media nonsense.  The Twitter feed kills my computer at least twice a day.  Also, change "save" to "post"....and move them to the right side of the comment box, I have posted I don't know how many blank comments mistakenly hitting "save" instead of home, it's annoying.

Tons of comments on this topic...

Submitted by bkeyser on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 12:45pm.

so if I am repeating someone else's, apologies in advance.

First of all, the Primary Election cycle is the time and place for the "establishment" to voice their opinion, and back it up with facts, regarding their choice for the party nod. Same goes for the average citizen voter (notice I'm speaking specifically about Republican voters here, given my use of the word "citizen".) In the General Election, I think the "establishment" should enthusiastically support the remaining candidate and the voter should stand by the Party -or sit out that ballot in protest, rather than vote for the opposition.

That being said, I think the RNC and NRSC thoroughly botched this election cycle by not taking the Tea Party seriously. Examples of establishment GOP'ers being replaced in both the Primaries (Castle, etc.) and General (Crist, etc.) abound, and the influence of some new blood -even though it's in the House- should force the establishment Senate Committee to wake up and embrace the impact of the Tea Party voter. Media predictions of the swift demise of the Tea Party are purposefully inaccurate, and it won't be long before GOP Senator's realize this. I suspect their first return trip to their home state for a Town Hall will be as contentious as those the Dems faced over Health Care if they aren't overtly working toward the will of the people. Grahamnesty will continue to feign shock and outrage because he thinks the Tea Party will fade before his next election. He's a go-along to get-along kind of spineless weasel, and he'll tow the line of the party in power if he thinks he'll eventually benefit.

The challenge for the Tea Party as it inevitably organizes further (which it will need to do if it is to remain an influence outside of election season) will be to remain true to it's principles and not be co-opted by special interests OR social issues. It must remain a fiscal-interest group and allow those with some social points-of-view that might be considered centrist. Conversely, some social issues such as gay marriage or abortion-on-demand simply don't fit with the fiscal Conservative/small government agenda anyway; gay marriage advocates want government or court decree to force acceptance on the balance of society, as do the baby killers. These are big-government "programs" and aren't in keeping with the Tea Party's overarching theme. Other areas like energy independence and environmentalism are usually issues claimed by the Democrats, though their reasoning for doing so involves increasing government revenue and thus power; Tea Party Conservatives should look at these issues from a fiscal standpoint -trying to encourage R&D in these fields with the end game being a cost-effective transition to efficient and reliable, renewable energy sources. The difference, of course, being the resultant size and scope of government.

So, now that I've laid out a partial plan that probably has little or no basis in fact, I'll return to my design work... ;-)

Submitted by Herbster on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 12:53pm.

Lindsay Graham, (McCains butt boy) McCain, the two witches from Maine, Cornyn and I'm sure a few others, have to go.  These "Cross the aisle and protect by job" types are not good mfor the country.  It is THEIR fault we lost some senate races.  Their lack of support both vocally and financially did not help.  Let's face it.  All they wanted to see win senate races were clones of themselves - not Rubio, Toomey, Paul, etc.  Remember that these RINO's supported that lower than pond scum candidate Charlie (The REAL political whore) Crist in Florida.

We lost, accoprding to the RINO types?  Lets see......we won six seats in the senate, sixty in the house, many governorships and cleaned up in thousands of local races.

What they are upset about is the threat to their cushy jobs from REAL Republicans!  Prostitutes all.

On Palin, on Paul, on Rubio and Toomey.  Soon there will be no space for RINO's in the room-ey!  And a goodnight to all.  2012 is coming.  Remember!.

Citing health overhaul, AARP

Citing health overhaul, AARP hikes employee costs

AARP waits till after the election, releasing the information at the end of the business day to avoid splash, yet they can't wait till closer to 2018 to screw their employees over the Cadillac Tax?

From the article:

"In an e-mail to employees, AARP says health care premiums will increase by 8 percent to 13 percent next year because of rapidly rising medical costs.

And AARP adds that it's changing copayments and deductibles to avoid a 40 percent tax on high-cost health plans that takes effect in 2018 under the law.

[...]

AARP officials said medical inflation is the main reason employee costs will be going up. The health care law is "a small part," said David Certner, legislative affairs director.

Although the tax on so-called "Cadillac" health care plans doesn't take effect for years, employers are already beginning to assess their potential exposure because it is hefty: at 40 percent of the value above $10,200 for individual coverage and $27,500 for a family plan. The tax is intended as a savings measure, to prod employers and workers into more cost-efficient plans.

Certner said AARP's plans are currently under the threshold for the tax. "We intend to stay below those thresholds," he said. "It's not in anybody's interest to move above those thresholds, not the employees' nor the employer's.""

The things that kept  these two in place in an otherwise pretty red state (we shed Dina Titus in NV-3 for Dr. Heck, Dean Heller kept NV-2, Sandoval kicked Rory Reid around the block in the Governor's race) are as follows:

Las Vegas is a magnet for every scam artist  both fleecing people directly and thru the gummint. They don't want to see their money dry up.

SEIU and the Culinary Union out here are regrettably well organized.

HIs Filthiness has been bringing in gummint pork into the state for over twenty years. Like we need another Sheets fricking Byrd.

Danny Tarkanian looks to be a good young up and comer to take the seat away from Shelly the DemoStepford Wife. I don't think she passes gas without okays from on high... which won't be quite so dam'high now, will they?

Reid is 70. Figure from there.

On the whole for the rest of the night... It's the only tool in the box, people, but we gotta be the party of Hell No!

On an aside... If Alan Steele wanted to demonstrate that he had a pair of bowling-ball sized titanium ones, he's round up McCain, Gramnesty, and the Maine Twins and tell em straight out..."Enough. Next time you break party lines, you are gone. The RNC will sue you for using the title of Republican, and you NEVER get another damn dime, not one second of airplay."

This is the beginning, folks. Hold on tight. And for the dems....

BUCKLE UP, BUTTERCUP!

One other wander...For the faithful Demcocrat would be dictators, so intent on carrying BHO's water..

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

NVCon... bloodied but not bowed...
