For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: are the media's climate alarmists "losing their religion"?
It has finally happened. We have reached the "tipping point."2009 can now be officially declared the year the media lost their faith in man-made global warming fears.
Significant organs of the mainstream media are now officially abandoning one-sided man-made global warming fear promotion and alleged claims that the "debate is over."
The stunning media reversal has accelerated in recent weeks as top UN scientists have raised the specter of continued global cooling.
Will the trend continue?

October 14, 2009 - 09:08 ET by MidAmericaSeveral factors are coming together to cool the passions of global warming enthusiasts. First, and the biggest reason, everyone realizes it's getting colder! Second, Gore no longer needs to be promoted as the 'Not-Bush' leader (and victim of a stolen election) of the US. Thirdly with obama's radical leftist push, the socialists don't need a 'back door' approach to transforming America. Obama is at the front door holding it open for them to just walk in.

I've thought the very same
October 14, 2009 - 09:45 ET by G. MayI've thought the very same thing. With a Dem President and Congress, a leftist media and education system, this is why we're seeing a full court press to violently shove America even further left.
We're really the last great bastion of socialism, even though it's a disguised socialism. Europe has been shifting right for awhile, China and Vietnam are expanding their free market economies, Canada is looking at the Private Option in their healthcare reform. The only beacons of overt socialism left in the world are those Marxist paradises of South Korea and Cuba.
Meanwhile our bureaucracy is growing to meet the needs of the bureaucracy, our government is the largest healthcare insurer, it has a majority stake in the nation's largest insurer, a stake in auto manufacturing and sales, a huge stake in the financial industry, it's the largest unemployment insurer, the largest retirement pension provider, eats up at least 30% of our GDP, actually redistributes wealth from rich to poor (increased the EITC to actually give the non fed income taxpayer money), and the list goes on.
Now Obama and Co. can give us the final push over the edge.
We have a winner.

The Battle is Far From Over
October 14, 2009 - 09:38 ET by richb313The Battle is Far from Over. There is too much for Governments that want more power to let this go. Watch out in less than a year someone will have proof that Man is responsible for the"Unprecidented Cooling". This is just Human Nature Really. Why are we as a people always attracted to stories of Disasters both Natural and Man Made? Why do News Medias always tell you about the Latest Health Scare, usually not worth the ink or paper used? They do it because they know it sells. We as a species are fasinated by Disaster. If there isn't any real ones around we will make one up.
The left uses this fascination for political purpose. The right is guilty as well. We always couch any debate in the disaterous outcome if something is done or not done.
President Obama, and the Democrats at large, want to pass very restrictive energy and Carbon legislation. Too much power, they are unwilling to concede, will prevent them from abandoning this agenda. They will trot out thier pet Climate Scientists and then try and force this on us.
Science is supposed to be above such things, but science is done by scientists who are people. Too many Scientists are addicted to celebrity. They like being in the Lime Light and will do anything to remain there. People who want power praise these scientists feeding their egos. The scientists in order to have his or her ego stroked some more will repeat and predict an even larger looming disaster in order to have that ego stroked again.
The Scientific Method, largely ignored in what passes for Climate Science these days, moderates these human tendencies by demandng that in order for any theory to be accepted that any other scientist should be able to get the same results if the experiments or research is repeated. Flawed data, unrepeatable research, unshared data are the hallmarks of a charlaten and that is what we have with a lot of what passes as science today.

October 14, 2009 - 10:47 ET by dscottWhen NASA scientists are acknowledging the possibility that we may be entering a Maunder Minimum in sunspot activity, the inevitable inference is to look at the effect on the planet at the time. It is common knowledge the Little Ice Age occured during this time period. As the GAT continues to fall, all the prattle about AGW will fall to the wayside like in the 1970's gave way to the 80's. It's all a natural cycle and mankind must adapt.
BTW- the ocean level Al Gore claimed would rise 20 ft and the IPCC estimated 3 ft has stopped rising. Oophs, an inconvenient truth.

decrease in sunspots
October 14, 2009 - 13:31 ET by jon_torlinYou know, they were trying and failing with their forecast of the number of hurricanes and of course coming up way short. And then there's the sunspot activity going way down and temps are getting cooler. We know there's a relation between sunspots and weather, does that mean the lack of sunsport activity also resulted in fewer and less violent hurricanes? The ones we've had this year have been relatively mild.
If that's the case, this could also shoot down the skeet that is global warming about humans causing it.

Hijacking
October 14, 2009 - 22:49 ET by RescuedByRushI'm gonna hijack this thread because it is listed as an "Open" one. For lip services purposes to the originating topic, I don't think we've reached a tipping point. Warmers are still too visible. But now on to my attempt to hijack this thread for the sake of input from NBers that might be reading it...
I am a long time reader, a short time member, and even shorter time commenter. I like to think that I'm pretty damn conservative. I'm faced with a conundrum, moral hazard, bitter choice, and would like to hear the opinions of fellow NBers on this matter.
I am an executive at a manufacturing firm in the USA. We do not accept inprofitability. If the top line goes down, we will address it with layoffs; white collar or blue, it doesn't matter. We've reached the point where further cuts will jeopardize future productivity and profitability. Simply put, we need to keep the staff we have to resume any kind of growth curve.
However, we can't afford the salaries, so we have instituted mandatory furloughs. Everyone must take one week without pay each quarter, indefinitely.
My question is this... When I take mine, do I file for unemployment? I've paid heavily into this program. But, I don't "need" it. What do the thinkers on this site have to opine about this situation? I'd be grateful for any input.
RescuedByRush...
October 15, 2009 - 00:13 ET by Michael30Well, it's an open thread, so I think your safe in asking a question there partner...
If your concern is that you don't need the money now, well, you never really know if you will need it later.
I worked for five years after high school just to be able to afford going to college. I thought I had dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's and was set. I was wrong. You never know what expences will hit you later.
To be honest, I have never filed for it, so I am no expert on the matter. Though it seems to me it is called "unemployment insurance" for a reason. You have paid into that system ever since your initial employment, so I see no real moral problem. You are not really fully employed if you are being forced to take time off without pay.
Social Security is another program you have paid into most of your life, and you will collect that as well at some point (well, hopefully anyhow, I'm 31 so I probably won't...) and I doubt anyone would fault you for doing so.
Besides, if (hopefully soon) you find yourself back at full employment with money to spare, and you find yourself riddled with guilt over it, you could always donate more to a charity of your choice.
It isn't thievery if you've paid into a system commonly agreed upon by other workers, that others have used, that you might need now to use yourself.
At least that's my opinion. Sorry it was so long though.
Mike
The fact you are even
October 15, 2009 - 08:32 ET by dscottThe fact you are even asking the question means you don't like hand outs and consider them contradictory to your values. You can look at this in two ways, 1.) you paid into the system of unemployment insurance and you are collecting a payout on the policy like any other insurance policy. 2.) if your income even after the salary reductions is sufficient to pay your bills and you would to make a voluntary contribution to society - either elect not to apply for unemployment (leaving the government to do with it as they please as in waste it) or accept the unemployment in order to donate it to a local soup kitchen or Salvation Army who will spend it efficiently going to those who might truly need it.
If you do accept the unemployment insurance pay out beware that you will being paying income tax on it.
