For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: even WaPo thinks nuclear disarmament is a pipe dream.
President Obama's dream of a world without nuclear weapons seems more like a nightmare to Russia and other nations that possess doomsday arms. Obama is pushing on a door that is closed, barred from inside and locked with a key that has been thrown away as far as the Kremlin is concerned.
This harsh reality does not mean that the president should abandon his effort, which is a useful tool in his broader, more urgent campaign to change America's image abroad. It does mean that Obama should temper his rhetoric and avoid adding atomic abolition to the growing list of subjects that he oversells and then seems to struggle to control. See: health care, bankers' bonuses and the Middle East.

Chicago does not want . . .
September 28, 2009 - 11:07 ET by Gat New YorkFoxNews in Chicago was told by the government not to run a segment on the fact that people in Chicago do NOT want the Olympics.
That is not any different than what happened in NYC when they pitched for the Olympics. The majority of New Yorkers did not want the Olympics in their neighborhood, yet the city ignored that and got a bunch of Hollywood stiffs who happened to grow up in New York (but don't live here anymore) to pitch for it anyway. Fortunately New York did not get the bid.
Chicago is worse. The crime rate from gangs - particularly on innocents - is escalating at an alarming rate. Yet Mayor Daily is more focused on covering up those problems in order to get this bid.
The people who are suffering the worst from this crime are African Americans who are losing their lives or lives of loved ones to gang thugs.
Also, as an American taxpayer why should I pay for Obama to pitch for the Chicago bid when the people in Chicago do not even want it.
At this point, I would like to see Obama start paying for his own plane rides if the trips are not directly related to his job as President - which he has yet to figure out.

The famous "Hockey Stick"
September 28, 2009 - 10:31 ET by Roger the ShrubberThe famous "Hockey Stick" graph is debunked.
Since shrubbers like me aren't too bright, here it is in a nutshell:
1- In 1998 a paper is published by Dr. Michael Mann. Then at the University of Virginia, now a Penn State climatologist, and co-authors Bradley and Hughes. The paper is named: Northern Hemisphere Temperatures During the Past Millennium: Inferences, Uncertainties, and Limitations. The paper becomes known as MBH98.
The conclusion of tree ring reconstruction of climate for the past 1000 years is that we are now in the hottest period in modern history, ever.
See the graph http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/image/mann/manna_99.gif
Steve McIntyre, a Canadian mathematician in Toronto, suspects tree rings aren’t telling a valid story with that giant uptick at the right side of the graph, implicating the 20th century as the “hottest period in 1000 years”, which alarmists latch onto as proof of AGW. The graph is dubbed as the “Hockey Stick” and becomes famous worldwide. Al Gore uses it in his movie An Inconvenient Truth in the famous “elevator scene”.
2- Steve attempts to replicate Michael Mann’s tree ring work in the paper MBH98, but is stymied by lack of data archiving. He sends dozens of letters over the years trying to get access to data but access is denied. McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, of the University of Guelph publish a paper in 2004 criticizing the work. A new website is formed in 2004 called Real Climate, by the people who put together the tree ring data and they denounce the scientific criticism:
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004/12/false-claims-by-mcintyre-and-mckitrick-regarding-the-mann-et-al-1998reconstruction/
3- Years go by. McIntyre is still stymied trying to get access to the original source data so that he can replicate the Mann 1998 conclusion. In 2008 Mann publishes another paper in bolstering his tree ring claim due to all of the controversy surrounding it. A Mann co-author and source of tree ring data (Professor Keith Briffa of the Hadley UK Climate Research Unit) used one of the tree ring data series (Yamal in Russia) in a paper published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 2008, which has a strict data archiving policy. Thanks to that policy, Steve McIntyre fought and won access to that data just last week.
4- Having the Yamal data in complete form, McIntyre replicates it, and discovers that one of Mann’s co-authors, Briffa, had cherry picked 10 trees data sets out of a much larger set of trees sampled in Yamal.
5- When all of the tree ring data from Yamal is plotted, the famous hockey stick disappears. Not only does it disappear, but goes negative. The conclusion is inescapable. The tree ring data was hand picked to get the desired result.
These are the relevant graphs from McIntyre showing what the newly available data demonstrates.

QM.... the Canadian Health
September 28, 2009 - 12:38 ET by celatorQM.... the Canadian Health System is a very weird set up. It looks something like this.
There are general guidelines set up in Ottawa, but the implementation of the guidelines is left to the Provincial governments. As a result, Canadian health care, even though it's nationalized, looks a little different from Province to Province.
For example, you can buy private health care insurance in British Columbia (I think it serves more or less as a supplement) for about 95 bucks a month.
But in other Provinces, you cannot buy private health insurance. It's general a mess and surveys I've read show that Canadians are not very happy with their system.
The really big issue is delay of needed medical services for patients--months in some cases. There's a huge effort in Ottawa to reduce these times, but they have not been particularly successful. That's why so many come to the US for medical treatment.
I read an interesting article the other day, can't find it right now. It noted that there are more MRI machines in Philadelphia, than there are in all of Canada, Interesting, and it highlights the problem.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

September 28, 2009 - 14:07 ET by Dan The Man 2I would want to interject that the dearth of free high school industrial education in this country is a problem. Not all are destined to goto college and when I went to high school there were trade educations such as auto mechanics, in my school drafting programs and the infamous shop programs where I learned welding.
These programs were set up so one could get a meaninggful job directly after high school. I believe jesse James is a big proponent of such programs. So school to work programs are valuable and IMO needed today.
Dan
September 28, 2009 - 14:41 ET by ricklailI agree with you on the vocational classes. They don't do that very much around here anymore. The public schools don't want to compete with the community colleges which are mostly trade/vocational schools here in NC.
Under Clinton the premise they were going to train a kid to do what they wanted him/her to do. Sort of like the Chinese method. You may be a great piano player but if there was no need for a piano player then you were trained to make widgets. If the widget business went under you were retrained to do what was needed now. The school to work that I am taking about is not the same as what you are thinking of taking vocational classes and be ready to start as a carpenter the day after graduation.

September 28, 2009 - 15:23 ET by slickwillie2001Tech/vocational schools died out for one reason, because the elitists that run our systems of education look down their nose at the trades. My son had a rough go of it in high school because he was a "techie", even getting mocked entering a pep ralley late because the bus from tech was late. Plumbers, welders, carpenters, etc are much more useful than english or history majors. It would be nice if the public schools treated the tech kids like human beings.

October 3, 2009 - 12:13 ET by Georgia GirlI understand where you are coming from, as a parent. I have never, ever held vocational trades in any lower regard -- and consider them useful and wonderful areas for those gifted in those areas to go into -- thank goodness for our plumbers, welders and carpenters!
By the same token, I do want to say that I don't think it's right to slam the English or history majors, as we all have different gifts that are useful in this world. I was not an English major (so I'm not reacting out of defensiveness to your post -- I waited a long time to respond back to this to make sure!). But as a writer, I've had the great honor of writing stories that range from those with disabilities and how they are overcomers...to those with great gifts to entertain and light-up our world...to those working on cures for Alzheimer's, cancer, etc. Because of these varied topics and special people (and, thankfully, for the gifts God gave me), I've been blessed. Writing has been an incredibly productive focus that has permeated so many areas of my life (and a great living!). I want the same for our son, who has a disability but has his own unique gifts -- for history, science and writing. He's incredibly talented in all these areas and has worked hard to overcome his weaknesses. He dreams of being a vet or a historian on a military base...and if he would major in English or history, I would be thrilled for him and very proud -- and I would know he would make a significant, wonderful contribution to the world. He has a lot to offer, in being exactly who he was created to be. So just like you don't want your son to be put down for who he is, I also feel the same way.:)
Yes, we surely need our carpenters, plumbers, electricians and welders. But we also need our writers, historians and scientists. Some majors that may seem less practical can actually be applied to a number of jobs today -- and make a difference for others.
Thank goodness we (and our kids) all have different gifts that can make a positive difference in this world.

Re Indoctrination
September 28, 2009 - 13:58 ET by slickwillie2001Yep, I suspect some naive voters will fall for the notion that this is about a better education for our children, but it's really about taking parents out of the picture for a more full indoctrination. Liberals have also always wanted free daycare for children for everyone, and this is a step in that direction.
This would also be an enormous sop to Big Union, since this can't be done without hiring millions more for what passes as teaching, and management.
Today Rush played a joke ad for a CD called "Songs of Revolution for Children", featuring children's songs from the Third Reich, as well as this year's odes to Obama. "More fun than you've had since 1933." There may have been some Red Chinese or North Korean in there as well.

A general question - pun intended
September 28, 2009 - 10:45 ET by KC MulvilleHow does Obama "evaluate" what McChrystal advises?
General McChrystal has advised the president on a strategy. We discover that the others in the military chain of command agree with that strategy. It is, however, politically inconvenient. So, it isn't so much what he decides, but how? What value system does he follow?
Disclaimer: I'm someone who questions the overall strategy in Afghanistan. But I fully admit that I'm a nobody, and my military expertise couldn't fill a thimble. All I say is that, from what I've read (with the provision that I can only go by what the liberal media tells me, of which I'm skeptical), it doesn't all add up. But what I'm worried about is that Obama will make his decision based on politics, not on what the optimal strategy is for victory in Afghanistan.
Well here you go KC
September 28, 2009 - 11:14 ET by DelsaWe have less than 10,000 on the ground in Afghanistan. It is clear we do not have a fight to win plan.
What is also clear is there is a Viet Nam mentality in the White House.
Meaning we have men and women making decisions for our Military who are insisting "no one get hurt", except for our own troops.
We lost more than 50,000 in Viet Nam because those in DC were playing the game of war.
If we are not going to fight to win the day then I don't want any blood to be shed on our side. This is Viet Nam all over again.
Our military are built to break things and win their objectives. What we have now are washington yahoos pulling strings and forcing our fine Generals to order their men into harms way knowing they are being sent unnecessarily to their deaths. Like sending them out with no ammunition in their weapons.
McChrystal went recently to a town in Afghanistan where civilians were killed by "accident" in a bomb raid. When he attempted to apoligze, it was town leaders who said, "BOMB US WE WANT THEM DEAD"!
STOP apoligizing!
Bring our guys home if SOBama is not going to do what his military wants. And bring our guys home if the our guys do not have all they need to kill the enemy!
I didn't mean to go on and on but I am sick and tired of our military being used to build roads. Our military defends us period!
There are Marines I love in harms way. They love this country and their job. But they did not sign in to be set up as targets in a shooting gallery!

"Maybe if we keep our heads buried in the sand, this will blow over" - The Congressional Republicans
Absolutely, he will
September 28, 2009 - 11:21 ET by BlondeThat's all he knows how to do....well, actually he's taken his standard fall back position of voting "present" on Afghanistan until he's forced to make a move.
He's in a lose-lose situation of his own making. He made a big policy speech back on March 27th, laying out his Afghanistan strategy, which, IIRC included the word victory. It's easily found by googling Obama Afghanistan Policy March 27, 2009.
Now that he understands what it is going to cost him, politically (just like getting out of Gitmo), he's reversed position faster than Percy Harvin on a 101 yd kick off return.
He's all talk and no action. And I understand General Hillary has weighed in that Gen. McChrystal is wrong. Hmm, go figure, I guess that dodging sniper fire makes her a certified military strategic thinker.
Obama will never, ever surge the troops the way Gen. McChrystal is urging. I'd rather we just fold it up than to hamstring our troops over there in some half-assed effort. It's bad enough that the ROE's have been changed, yet again, to reflect a policing type mentality rather than war.
Enough...it was a good question, but I'm getting worked up again.
I hope he fails, too.
Re Afghanistan
September 28, 2009 - 11:52 ET by slickwillie2001He'll sit on his thumb as long as he can. Doing the right thing will enrage the far left that he needs on his domestic revolution. And look at the losers he has advising him on Afghanistan, –Powell, Kerry and Senator Jack Reed. Woe is we.

I'm not a military advisor
September 28, 2009 - 12:57 ET by Dan The Man 2I'm not a military advisor but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Seriously, from what I have read and surmise the terrain is not condusive to successful military operations to conquer teh whole country. Besides the terrain you have a weak central government and a warlord type government in most outlying places. In addition there is a vibrant and lucrative drug trade.
So all these add up to a lot of resistance to a strong military campaign to change the people and the country. We can "win", but the question is what do we want to do there, what is our mission. In 2001 it was to extricate Al Quada from there, the Taliban resisted and teh rest is history.
So we have partial control over about half of what was Afghanistan but is taht adequate? So we go back to teh origianl idea of teh mission there right now. Is teh mission to build teh country up from teh stone age it was or do we want to make the country whole. I dont ever beleive it was whole but a coalition of factions banding together for conviniece.
Whatever teh mission was under teh Bamster it is to vote present and hope for teh best and if taht fails get the bus warmed up and ready.
What a Surprise
September 28, 2009 - 11:13 ET by BeresfordProminent lefty website "Talk Left" had a post yesterday about the "outrageous" arrest of Roman Polanski.
But it turns out that crying about the misfortune of a fugitive child rapist was too much even for the blogs usual readers.
Comments poured in overwhelmingly expressing no support for the geriatric slimeball. What did blogmistress Jeralyn do? Easy. Wiped out all comments. Now that's a healthy liberal attitude.

We have to control the HIGH GROUND
SO....
We blow the tops off the mountains and shoot the son's of bitches when they start evacuating, like ants, after their nests are disturbed.
Once we own the high ground, we will control.
But we will have to kill innocents.....along the way. WAR is hell and if we are at WAR then we had better fight like it.
Other wise let us get our guys out of there and let them live to fight another day.

September 28, 2009 - 13:22 ET by Georgia GirlThat's very funny -- Holiday Inn Express. :)
Your final summation on the degree of thought Obama has put into military operations seems spot on to me -- you do get the sense there is a bus ready to leave at a moment's notice. His lack of deliberation and flim-flam nature is not fair to our men and women in uniform.
My mother's brother's only niece didn't vote for Obama.

September 28, 2009 - 13:59 ET by upcountrywaterNo slugs, or frogs, no EPA ... Just engineering pure and simple.
Not one but two
Two nuclear power generating units, each with a capacity of
1.25 gigawatts (GW), would be brought online in 2014 and 2015.
This power plant will cover 100 acres..
A wind farm of equal power would cover 100,000 acres... If the wind blows 24 hours a day..
As the planet cools there will be LESS WIND!!

Why does the U.S. need
September 29, 2009 - 04:51 ET by RR GOPWhy does the U.S. need nukes when our enemies can get what they want anyway?
Regardless of who's been President or which party is in charge, this has always been the case.
Some say Reagan was responsible for bringing down the Soviet Union, but I believe they had been planning on reverting to Capitalism for some time. It's Marxist history of class struggles stuff...a society can't successfully move from one socio-economic era to another bypassing one in between. The Marxist philosophers realized that Russia going directly from Feudalism to Socialism was a mistake. They're backing up and making up for lost time is all. Same with Red China, but without the drama.
The idea is that Socialism can rest upon the technological and economic foundation provided by Capitalism.
