Former President Jimmy Carter with NBC's Brian Williams Tuesday night:
"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American. I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shared the South's attitude toward minority groups, at that time particularly African-Americans. That racism, inclination, still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of a belief among many white people, not just in the South, but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance and grieves me and concerns me very deeply."

The fact is that President Carter is right. When you have this kind of irrational behavior going on in Congress and at so-called Tea Parties, it has to be driven by something other than a difference of opinion over policy. What Carter and many other people are seeing here is the exploitation of people's fear, and that fear is being driven by bigotry and xenophobia. When people show such eagerness to accept even the most comical lies about President Obama without any healthy skepticism, we're talking about the kind ignorance that goes hat & hand with racism. When the organizer of the Tea Party events posts an article on his website that calls the President of the United States an "Indonesian, Muslim, communist thug", those with a shred of common sense know exactly where he is coming from, which is just south of the Mason Dixon Line.

The Republicans knew these amendments wouldn't be acceptable before the proposed them. It was just another pig-headed tactic to derail health care reform by piggy-backing immigration on top of it. Actually, no. As I do not accept a committed Socialist's word as if it is the holy writ, you can show me where specifically it/they prevented illegal immigrants from getting to suck the government tit.
The amendments which they've proposed would have had doctors and nurses in emergency rooms refusing treatment to sick or injured children and the elderly until some bureaucrat confirms their status. When all else fails, a cowardly, thieving Socialist like you goes and hides behind children and the elderly. Of course, it would be too much to ask of you to start a charity to help them. No, the government IS the charity in your world, and they need to stick a gun in people's faces and steal, steal and steal some more in order to assuage YOUR guilt.
Tell you what. THIS is health care reform.
1) Tort reform.
2) Deregulate health care. Turn over regulatory powers over health insurance to state boards of insurance. Allow people to buy health insurance in whatever state people want.
3) Allow people to establish MSAs. That way people can use MSAs to pay for the minor emergencies (sniffles, paper cuts, broken arms, etc). This way people ONLY use health insurance to pay for catastrophic illnesses.
4) Health/medical insurance should be sold like auto insurance. I don't go through an employer for auto insurance. Why should I go through them for health insurance? That way it won't matter: I can get fired and laid off hundreds of times and as long as my insurer gets their premium, I am insured.
5) For those with pre-existing conditions, we use a high risk pool (again, regulated by state boards of insurance). This way they can most definitely get coverage. They'll pay a higher rate...but they will be covered.
6) If you are still consumed with total, overwhelming guilt over those who for whatever reason either cannot or refuse to pay for their own doctor, whiny children like you get off of your asses and start a damned charity.
I need food, water, clothing, and shelter every single day. For some strange reason I pay for those things as I need them. The doc should not be any different.

Impending Backlash
September 16, 2009 - 08:36 ET by Gat New YorkYou have to have less than a third grade education to believe Obama is not behind all this racism stuff. His M.O. is to stay above the fray but let surrogates do his whipping.
The problem is that the majority of Americans will not stand for this and if it continues there will be a backlash to African Americans in this country. We have gone through decades of affirmative action where African Americans have gotten jobs and places in college based purely on race - and we turned the other cheek. We have stood by when empty charges of racism came from Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and a number of elected officials as an excuse for not getting what they want or losing an argument.
To turn the debate over socialism into a overall charge of racism is not going to stand without repercussions and a backlash.
It is ironic that Obama, who happened to be born looking like his father, was not raised by black people in black neighborhoods or had black friends. Yet he uses the race card whenever he can and it could be at the detriment of race relations.

I take extreme offense to this
September 16, 2009 - 08:59 ET by BKeyserThe simple fact is, the charge of racism brings with it the most damning accusation one can make of another in today's society. You'd think pedophile would outrank racist, but clearly, it doesn't.
Sadly, there is still racism rampant in this country, in every town and every city to some degree, and it eminates from all races. But, that's a condition that is not likely to change anytime soon, especially when buffoons like Mr. Carter and almost every MSNBC personality continue to randomly throw it out there.
Charges like this, without any basis on fact (though you can bet that Joe Wilson being from South Carolina is the major implication in this case) does nothing but cheapen the argument, and sanitizes people from real race-related issues still occuring in America.
If the so-called black leaders of today were real leaders, they would immediately shout down these charges as baseless, and make the same argument I'm making; this will not help true victims of racism.

If so...then why can I not see His academic records? Why are we, the American people, not allowed under any circumstances to see this?
Let's see if you can answer this, coward.

The longer a person pushes this issue, the further away they get from me, and they only build a wall of elitism that not even I can circumvent.
We should share the same goals as Americans, which would be, putting America first and making her as awesome as possible. Living in isolated groups of race does not promote those ideals. At all.

Are you speaking for yourself? Who is the "many" you refer to? Is there someone you personally know?
The ones who believe they are somehow "Champions of Equality" are undermining the very thing they are championing. By continually whipping out the race card as their "Ace up the sleeve" when their backs are against the wall, they are going to the well too many times.
It's like being called a pedophile for no reason at all and without any evidence. You are now marked as one regardless. Shame on them all who equate disagreements with racism.

Reasonable dissent from those core beliefs cannot possibly be attributed to concious thought processes by reasonable people.
Carter has a brain like a large rock in the middle of the road.

a war of any kind
September 16, 2009 - 09:08 ET by jon_torlinJimmy and people like him are trying their damnedest to foment violence of one kind or another. We're already seeing it in the race wars where black kids are beating up a white kid in the bus (I don't see how that couldn't be racially motivated), or other incidents, but it's bad enough that when you have events like the 9-12 march and calling people who did that racists.....come on, really?
I wasn't kidding in another post where I said that my boss might have to send me to the tolerance counseling class because he knows I don't like Soetoro and what he's doing to our country. How long before anyone else starts doing that, care to guess?
Talk about being in a room full of dynamite and powder kegs while trying to take a smoke, sooner or later, something will get set off and there'll be a big explosion of one kind or another.
These people that are trying to foment further division and perhaps even violence need to be brought up on incitement charges because that's what they are doing, they are trying to incite people into doing something to further their agenda.
Don't hold your breath on that though.

From a columnist in today's Washington Post
September 16, 2009 - 09:14 ET by Prester JohnSome people don't believe Wilson's outburst had anything to do with race. They'll tell you it's democracy in action. But tell that to the many African Americans who know first-hand the subtlety of post-racial slights. What had been our excitement over Obama's election is rapidly becoming consternation at a marked increase in racism and attendant racial disparities -- in health, income, jobs and housing -- to say nothing of Obama's abject refusal to even broach the subject of race.

Some people don't believe Wilson's outburst had anything to do with race? SOME PEOPLE? How about MOST people? You know, the ones who actually see what is going on?
And there has been a marked increase in racism since BHO became president? Says who????
These people have lost their minds and will twist the language any way they can to protect their Messiah and attack his political enemies.
We are entering very dangerous territory and BHO won't do or say a thing to stop it.
It has always been the racist liberals
September 16, 2009 - 11:19 ET by Willis_Leon_JohnsonThat shoved all minorities into slums and ghettos where they can be easily controlled and taught to HATE everything they can't have.
And the racist liberals made damned sure that those minorities were TAUGHT that they could never achieve anything any position other than a slave of the system the liberals put into place.
The reason SUCCESSFUL minorities are slammed by liberals and the HAS BEEN MEDIA is to make certain the minorities in the slums STAY IN THEIR PLACE assigned to them by the racist liberal politicians and media.
IF we are required to use the 'race card' then lets use it IN CONTEXT and with PROOF.
So far the 'war on poverty' has cost PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS 40 TRILLION DOLLARS, and the minorities are still held down in their little areas of squalor with no hope of EVER improving their lives.
It ain't 'whitey' that's causing their problems.

Exploiting our politeness
September 16, 2009 - 09:15 ET by KC MulvillePoliteness and civility make society run with minimal friction. But politeness can be exploited. You can hurl the most disrespectful and insulting charges while speaking calmly. Even though the appearance of your speech is "polite," the substance of making charges of racism is deeply disrespectful. So that tactic (hurling slime) presents an unpleasant choice to the victim: if you respond indignantly to the substance of the accusation, your indignation is portrayed as impolite.
If a president calls his opponents liars, but he does so in a measured "tone," hasn't he completely disrespected his opponents? And if so, why do his opponents need to keep a respectful tone in response? The first person to break the rule has no right to demand that others observe the rule. If you hurl an insult, you have no right to expect your opponent to refrain from doing the same.
You can't tell the American public that your opponents are liars, and stooges of special interests, and demand that they answer in a calm and respectful "tone." When you use politeness to insulate disrespect, politeness is no longer a useful social value.

September 16, 2009 - 09:16 ET by chuckk"I have nothing against a community that is made up of people who are Polish, or who are Czechoslovakians, or who are French Canadians or who are blacks trying to maintain the ethnic purity of their neighborhoods. This is a natural inclination."

September 16, 2009 - 09:30 ET by Jarhead68Jimmy Carter is, indeed, a racist. I wonder how many times he, as a young boy and later young man, growing up in Georgia, used the word "n****r" when discussing black people. I spent time in the 60's in Louisiana and that term was part of the every day vernacular for people who grew up there. Carter's older than I am so I guarantee you he used the term as if it were the word "the". He's a sanctimonious jackass who needs to get a clue.

What's Chocolate got to do with Racism?
September 16, 2009 - 09:25 ET by MCLANTIERENormal
0
Do you like Chocolate? I do. In fact, it’s really me
absolute favorite treat. I could eat chocolate for all day, and show-up ready
for more the very next morning.
I have a friend from our church that hates chocolate. No
kidding! He’s a pretty good-sized guy, so it’s not like he’s a
feeble-skinny-minnie. That said, he simply hates chocolate.
Now, I think he’s nuts. He’s a great guy, mind you … and we
have other stuff in common – but on the issue of his taste-buds, I think he’s
nuts. I can figure that maybe he’s just never had good chocolate -- you know,
like Swiss or Belgian chocolate. I think to myself that he’s only tried that
Walgreen’s Easter-egg chocolate (you know the ones sold on the aisle end-caps
for months after Easter -- 200 chocolate egg-balls for $1.00.) He’s just never
had really, really good chocolate, because if he did -- he would love and
embrace chocolate, as I have I (and the rest of the sane world.)
I know this for a fact because, drawing upon my frame of
reference ... and projecting that reference “set”, I find it impossible to
rationalize that anyone could actually hate chocolate.
Bear with me here -- I really am getting to my point.
Projections: It’s the same ideals that we use to
see-the-world around us. We see things based on our experiences and sub-set
ideals.
What’s interesting -- and frankly a little concerning – is
the degree that the “R”-- word is being slung around these days. RACISM.
Conservative Americans hate Socialism, Fascism, and
“Robin-Hood-type” government policies …
and Liberal (Progressive) Americans can’t understand that idea -- because Liberals are so absolutely convinced
of the social values of compulsive-charity (State-sponsored sharing.) Jeanne
Garafalo, Keith Obermann, Maureen Dowd, Eugene Robinson, of course Jimmy Carter
– are all convinced so totally that Socialism works in a society -- that when the proverbial “wheels-come-off”
-- there MUST BE another reason for
failures. When Conservatives push-back on social programs of this current
president, it can’t possibly be for any other reason that something born from pure hatred. Liberals can’t fathom
that some people fundamentally oppose the Government running things.
Liberals now rationalize that there must be only one reason
for Conservatives no wanting Government control over their lives. RACE! The
Liberal immediately retreats to the only thing that makes sense to him -- it must be RACIAL! Notice Bill Maher finding
RACIAL fault with a DRUDGE headline --- connecting the dots between the use of
the word NEGS … and something else. Bill Maher’s mind immediately made the
connection. Didn’t yours? Does Bill Maher’s brain always make these kinds of
connections? It’s sort of like the kid in college who was still without a 1st-kiss
… but all he ever thought about was dirty-joke puns, porn-movies, and sex-talk.
After a very short while, you knew where this kid’s head was.
Liberals are fixated on RACE because that’s THEIR mind
projecting THEIR reference “set”. For all the Tea-parties, for all the
Fox-News, for all the Rush, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity … the only
time I EVER hear something disparaging about RACE … is from LIBERALS.
We see things based on our experiences and sub-set ideals.
Liberals -- maybe
it’s time for a little introspection.

Why didn't Jimmy Carter think black Americans could lead?
September 16, 2009 - 09:41 ET by GalvanicOf the 21 people who served as Vice President (Mondale) or in the Carter Cabinet, only one was an African-American: Patricia Roberts Harris. She was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and then in 1979, moved over to be Secretary of Health & Human Services -- neither position considered major Cabinet posts even back then. And Carter later stated that had he gotten to nominate a Supreme Court Justice, his nominee would've been his Secretary of Education, Shirley Mount Hufstedler -- not an African-American.
So, why didn't Jimmy Carter appoint more African-Americans to positions of leadership? Why did his cabinet consist mainly of old white guys like Cyrus Vance, Edmund Muskie, Harold Brown, Joe Califano, James Schlesinger, and Cecil Andrus?

September 16, 2009 - 10:31 ET by rowdygirlThis is so pathetic. Did he really think that we need his input on this? This is the man who builds houses for people who have no idea what it's like to actually work for something. Yes.. that will make some people mad, but it's the truth.
I guess what it boils down is this: Obama will be allowed to make horrendous mistakes, errors in judgment and possibly illegal decisions and the only people allowed to call him on it are other blacks? If you criticize him and you're white, it makes you a racist. We are rapidly losing all of our rights in this country, with freedom of speech at the top of the list.

It is shamefull that those comments are even given serious consideration and shows really how little regard the left and Carter have for minorities if they feel the need to be the great protectors and speakers for a section of the populace that has its own and should be perfectly willing to use a voice of their own in matters and making charges of this nature.

You have to understand his comments
September 16, 2009 - 11:51 ET by nwahsCarter's comments are to rally the base, not change any minds. His comments aren't for the sake of the right or even the independent. Its for the the left that are thinking about jumping ship. He's giving a pep talk to the choir. He doesn't have to be logical. If you think making a logical case is what this is about, you misunderstand it. Having 55% against Obamacare means some on the left are jumping ship. The racism thing is just a modern day "red menace" for the left to rally against.
The way to combat this is not get sidetracked by the racism issue, (you'll never convince the far left you aren't or the center left they shouldn't be worried about being called one) but to keep throwing out facts.

Both my father and my father-in-law were active duty (Air Force) during Carter's disastrous time in office, and both of them have told me about the problems that his mishandling of the military caused during that time...There were times when aircraft sat idle on flightlines, because they either didn't have the fuel or parts necessary for them to take off. It was a mess. I was in my teens while Carter was in office, but was very, very glad and proud to vote for President Reagan the first time I was of voting age in 1980, and helped throw that imbecile Carter, out of office.

Political Education
September 16, 2009 - 22:39 ET by UnsaneMy father's enduring political advice: vote for whoever supports the military.
This sage advice then usually led to discussions as far back as I can remember. They usually ran like this: I'd ask him who he voted for and why.
"Son, I voted for Goldwater back in 1964." I asked why: "Because he wanted to win the f*****g war, that's why!!!"
(yes, he was in the Army)
He'd tell me he didn't think Nixon was bad, and he was OK with Ford. Then Jimmy Carter comes up. "You know, every President made damn sure the GIs got a pay raise. Except HIM. That m*********** Carter did not give the GIs one g****** pay raise the whole time he was in office. NOT ONE F******* PAY RAISE!!! I WAS GLAD TO SEE THAT A****** GONE!!! DAMN RIGHT I VOTED FOR REAGAN!!!!"
Oh, and I learned VERY early on not to utter "Jimmy Carter" in the house.
Me being too young to remember Jimmy's exploits, I have had to rely on history. Mind-boggling, I assure you...if I had been of age during that time I would have lost my mind witnessing his stupidity. The saddest thing was that maybe I could give Carter SOME props for taking humanitarian approaches with Habitat for Humanity and so on...but then, out comes Peace Not Apartheid and ANY shreds of respect I had for the guy get flushed down the toilet.

When he began working with them, I thought, well, maybe he has found something useful that he can involve himself in that might help his image a bit, but like you, his anti-Israel crap over the years just killed all of that, as far as I'm concerned. He has become almost more of a joke and an embarrassment now than he was as president. I have no use for him whatsoever, and wish he would just shut up and go away.

September 16, 2009 - 18:25 ET by PrairieSkyhas become what the Left thinks is the perfect weapon to silence Obama's opposition. Most Americans are mortified of being called a racist...there isn't anything much worse that you can call an American, than calling them a "racist", so the obvious hope here is that the mere threat of being called a racist will be enough to keep people quiet.

I'm Gonna Have To Side With Jimmy On This One...
September 16, 2009 - 22:32 ET by The7SticksI understand peoples' feelings towards former President Carter, and I'd be angry too at someone who made some extraordinarily stupid decisions as president. As Phil Hendrie might say, his name is about as electable as Hitler's. But Hendrie also agrees with former President Carter that some of the motivation against President Obama's agenda is motivated by race. Maybe not consciously, and I would have to disagree with Carter that Rep. Wilson is a racist. On the whole, though, Carter hits it on the mark. Consider the following: When people were protesting Bill and Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan in 1994, nobody who disagreed with them, as far as I can tell, referred to them as radical socialists or communists. See, there's a history about the racial tinge of the words communist and socialist in America since the days of Huey Newton and the Black Panthers, who were decidedly radical and to the left.
Now if Colin Powell had ran a successful presidential campaign and became president, I doubt that there would be any comparisons to him as being a radical socialist or communist. That's because he's center-right. But since President Obama's center-left, you apparently assume that he is a radical socialist/communist since that can only be the case with black men on the left. It's as simple as that.
BS Flag raised here
September 16, 2009 - 22:55 ET by UnsaneIf you believe His Majesty The Shahinshah is merely "center-left", you aren't drinking the Kool-Aid. You are addicted to the Kool-Aid.
Is He a Socialist? Let facts be submitted to a candid World (h/t to TJ)...
He has nationalized (in part) two auto manufacturers. This is behavior I expect of nations such as France.
He has nationalized (in part) banks.
He is ACHING to nationalize 1/6 of the economy of the United States.
He has stated that one of the things the government needs to do for the economy is to "spread the wealth around".
These actions ALL BETRAY His Socialist inclinations. And unfortunately for you, Socialism does not care what color you are. It is a simple as that. Not to mention I am applying the lessons from a day in August 1963...something about judging people "not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
I personally am judging His Majesty The Shahinshah by the content of His policies, His plans, and His actions. That you still loft the accusation of "racism" in the face of the evidence indicates says more to me about you than it does about the posters of NB that you have insulted.
It really is too bad you support this hypocrite Carter. He is a documented anti-Semite, yet he feels the need to lecture us on our "racism".
Finally, I find all this quite amusing from one who is sickened at the last portion of the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law...abridging...the right of the people to peacebly assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Keep on chugging the Kool-Aid, and keep worshipping your God, His Majesty The Shahinshah.

7Sticks...Obama is center-left? Since when?
September 16, 2009 - 23:16 ET by PrairieSkySomebody's been doing the backstroke through the Kool-Aid...
You have got to be kidding...I almost don't know where to begin here.
Nothing about Obama is center...He is as much a hard-core leftist as they come. You must not have been paying much attention before or after the election...When Obama was in the Senate, he had one of the most liberal records there. That is a fact. The reason that Obama is opposed by so many has nothing to do with the fact that he is a black liberal leftist...it is because he is a liberal leftist who wants to take this country down a progressively socialist path, and that has been proven by just about everything he has done since he took office.
And FYI...I don't know how old you are, but I distinctly remember when Hillarycare was all the rage in D.C. (before it went down in flames that is), and she, her husband and their cockeyed plan for reforming the healthcare system in this country, were all referred to as leaning in a socialist direction.
This opposition to Obama has, by and large, nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the fact that people don't want his healthcare reform plan, and they don't like the direction that he is taking this country. Period.
"The problem is not that people are taxed too little...the problem is that government spends too much." ~President Ronald Reagan

And from what I've seen of Powell lately, I'm not sure Obama isn't the better of the two choices.
I'll bet there are mothers out there glad McCain didn't win because he's a military man, and more likely to put their sons in harm's way. Those mothers wanted McCain to fail. Nothing wrong with their reasoning as far as I can tell.
If I want Obama to fail at balkanizing the USA, and attempting to rule over Texas the same way the Daley corruption machine rules Chicago, those mothers, similarly, have no room to talk.
I want this dictator wannabe to fail. His goals are misaligned with American success, and I don't owe his minions a free lunch or government lodging.

September 17, 2009 - 04:33 ET by StreakIf Obama is 96% a NON BLACK man why does everyone keep up the racial tone in the first place.
