MRC’s Dan Gainor on Van Jones: Mainstream Media ‘Kept American Public in the Dark’

  • Bookmark and Share

Dan Gainor, the Vice-President of Business and Culture for the MRC, appeared on the September 8 edition of Fox Business Live to discuss the media's failure to report on President Obama's green jobs czar Van Jones, who resigned late Saturday night.

Gainor stated that the mainstream media "absolutely ignored" the Jones stories. He detailed:

If you are a watcher of ABC, NBC or CBS, two of those networks, you didn't even hear about it until Sunday after the White House buried the resignation midnight the night before. If you read The New York Times, the first time you heard about this major controversy was after the guy resigned. The Washington Post chimed in the day before -- the day of the resignation. They wrote a piece and then basically became moot that night. They kept the American public in the dark.

Anchor Stuart Varney called the media's ignoring of the story "a total breakdown in journalistic ethics and standards," a point with which Gainor agreed. "If you were to look at the Society of Professional Journalism ethical guidelines, you're supposed to set aside your bias and actually report kind of both sides of the story."

Gainor credited alternative media for pushing the Jones story.

This story became popular because some people chimed in, talk radio, Fox did a good job. Beyond that new media helped drive the story. Twitter and Facebook. One of the bloggers I know said that you can tell when Van Jones was a trending topic on twitter, ordinarily that's reserved for people after they pass away, he said. In this case it was only Van Jones' career that was passing away.

I just watched Stu take on

I just watched Stu take on some lib radio jockey as he's filling in for Cavuto. The guy spent the whole time berating the "grey poupon" crowd and saying that we don't make cars, airplanes or anything else in this country- all we do is ship jobs overseas. It's such a simplistic and immature argument. I guess it's the only one many unionized folks can understand- class warfare. Varney, of course, sited the obvious example of union success- Detroit.

As an architect, I'm wondering just what union carpenters would do without those of us non-unionized, grey poupon eating, fatcats who design the buildings they work on. Or the designers and engineers, also non-unionized, who design the vehicles that they build on those factory assembly lines.

It's basically a "cut off your nose to spite your face" mentality these union folks subscribe to.

bk, Of course I agree

bk,

Of course I agree with you in principle. On the practical level, I would gladly pay the five or even ten dollars extra for a pair of US-made pliars than the almost new, puchased from Lowe's, Chinese-made ones that fell apart in my hand this weekend. I don't want to direct companies on where they need to manufacture, but dang, sometimes I wish I had a choice when I buy something - know what I mean?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Lib Radio Jockey.

That idiot is Mike Papantonio. At least Mike got an audience on Fox News Channel.  He gets no audience on his radio show. Papantonio is just plain clueless!

yep- that's the guy

yep- that's the guy

I saw part of that also.

I saw part of that interview and my only problem with Varney was he got down in the weeds with this guy instead of letting him have enough rope to hang himself.  Just about the time this guy was going to elaborate on stupid, Varney starting talking over him so you couldn't get the real stupid stuff.

They are helping Beck

Glenn Beck should get a purple heart award. Nobel peace prize already.

Remember when Kennedy smeared Bork about back alley abortions? The news media ran with the lies. Read this site, join Heritage, read other blogs and fight back.

DAILY WAVE

Hoping for change

It covers the image of the Obama administration Internationally

Guys (and gals), come on!

The MSM is still the primary means for setting an image of the Obama administration to international markets.

Many overseas have not heard of the Van Jones scandal, or even of Town Halls and Tea Parties!

Dobbs on Jones

Lou Dobbs is back from vacation, and provided extensive coverage of the Van Jones scandal. He gave Glenn Beck proper credit for what he did, and even his usual talking heads had not a lot of sympathy for Jones. They did however see no connection between the beliefs of Jones and that of the Bamster. That's still off-limits.

Dobbs did not see this as a triumph of investigative journalism, because as he put it, the statements and positions that brought Jones down were only a click or two away. He did not however go into why no other news outlet chose to make those clicks.

They're making up for their treatment of Bush.

I'm sure the NY Times is just making up for their treatment of Bush.  Instead of giving up state secrets, they're not giving up anything until they have to.  If they don't have anything good to say, they're not saying anything at all.

It's pretty easy to do if you don't mind giving up what little integrity you have left.

Bill O'Reilly is a jealous ASS! Glenn Beck came on O'Reilly's

show today to discuss the departure of Van Jones. FoxNews, and in particular Glenn Beck, were primarily responsible for revealing Jones as a wacko communist nut.

Bill O'Reilly spent the whole interview with Glenn Beck minimizing and belittling Beck's role in ousting Jones. O'Reilly contended that Van Jones termination was no big deal, as he was a low-level official. O"Reilly also suggested that President Obama probably didn't know Jones very well.

Glenn Beck was obviously irritated at this tact, and tried to explain to O'Reilly the importance of Van Jones. But O'Reilly, as always, was stubborn and wouldn't listen.

O'Reilly's jealousy toward Beck's accomplishment was immediately noticeable. I've seen O'Reilly treat an ACLU representative with more respect than he did Glenn Beck.

I look forward to the day that Glenn Beck passes Bill O'Reilly in the ratings. In fact, I'm beginning to dislike O'Reilly's pompous attitude so much that I wouldn't be too upset if Olbermann beat O'Reilly in the ratings a few times (just a few times).
