August 30, 2009 - 13:59 ET by Kat Outta the BagYou know, I'm worried about the "younger" Kennedys now that their so-called Family Patriarch is gone. Without his wise leadership and example, I fear they might turn to drugs, alcohol and adultery. Oh, wait...
Flying Pig Alert!!
August 30, 2009 - 11:46 ET by motherbeltAnd believe it or not, this was in the New York Times, of all places, yesterday:
Democrats Forgetful on Senate Appointments
Whining about Charlie Crist naming a crony to hold Mel Martinez's Senate seat until he can run for it next year, they conveniently forget that that's how Ted Kennedy got his seat:
When John F. Kennedy won the presidency in 1960, Ted Kennedy was still
too young to take his older brother’s empty Senate seat immediately. So
the Kennedys arranged for a family friend named Benjamin A. Smith II to
be appointed to the seat for two years until a special election when
Ted Kennedy would be old enough to run and win it himself. Sound
familiar?

I know Teddy had "bulk", but how much "estate" is left? I've heard accounts over the years that it was dwindling down pretty low, with none of the trust fund babies willing to work towards adding to the coffers. They're leaving the "compound" to the government as a museum and "educational" facility (a bartending school?). I wonder what's left?

this from a Party that would never demand anyone prove they were in this country legally or even push for a national Voter ID!

That's exactly how I thought when I watched it myself...first thing that crosses you mind, other than Moran's usual belligerent arrogance...for the life of me, he is another one who has got away with tons of BS from his mouth and attitude, along with Pete Stark of Ca., I know the lit could go on and on...it's time to throw a heck of a lot of them out, evidently a lot of Americans are feeling the same...hope it stays as such for another year and then some.

Re Trial Lawyers
August 30, 2009 - 11:22 ET by slickwillie2001Good article by Fred Barnes on tort reform and the Texas experience:
Caving to Trial Lawyers: http://www.weeklystandard.com
"Tort reform works. Texas is a good example. In 2003, the state enacted caps on noneconomic damages (so-called pain and suffering) and added a requirement that lawsuits be approved by a panel of medical experts. Over the next four years, premiums fell 21 percent, the drift of doctors out of the state was halted, and 7,000 new doctors set up practices."
Where have I heard this?
August 30, 2009 - 11:37 ET by mandrakeThis sounds familiar..

August 30, 2009 - 11:11 ET by candanceWe spoke with our friend yesterday. The medicine they've got him on is helping stabilize things, so his voice sounded better. We hope this is a good sign that he can recover.
But now the bad news. His daughter developed a cough this week. They hurried her to a doctor and explained the situation. But apparently there is such a short supply of test kits that they won't test her until she shows specific symptoms.

August 30, 2009 - 11:59 ET by StarAZI was on a health care break, so did not watch the festivities--memoritivities, whatever. I did see Dodd for a second--and thought, "Give back your neato mortgage, you parasite." I also caught McCain, whom I voted for..."Yeah, I know you guys were friends, but it's all one big rich, happy family while we flyovers creep along, isn't it?" I didn't see a word of the Obama part. But I read that it was lugubrious--time his brothers did not have, etc. America is so good at funeralizing, crocodile tears and celebrating its excesses. I used to feel swells of pride, now I just feel flat and empty.

I said I wasn't going to read any more about Kennedy, but seeing Jill Stanek's name hooked me.
Who, except a first-class narcissist and solipsist, when facing death, decides to write a letter to the POPE, bragging about what he sees as his life's accomplishments???
I'm confused, MB
August 30, 2009 - 12:29 ET by candanceI'm not Catholic so maybe am speaking out of line here about the Pope's position. But it seems to me that if someone knew that they knew that they knew Christ would lead them to heaven, they wouldn't feel a need to write a letter to the Pope like this. It sounds like Ted was asking for the Pope's permission to go to heaven. Did I read something wrong?
candance, I honestly don't know...
August 30, 2009 - 13:09 ET by motherbeltcandance, I honestly don't know what Kennedy hoped to accomplish.
My first thought was that the thought he had to prove himself deserving of having the Pope pray for him. That's stupid; a simple request would have sufficed; I'm certain Pope Benedict would have acquiesced.
That's why it seemed to me just another egotistical exercise, an opportunity for Ted to toot his own horn.
As if, seeing judgment looming, was sort of making his case to the Pope, and indirectly, to God.
Frankly, it sounded to me like part of the parable of the two men praying in the Temple :
10"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
I did notice, however, that in listing the causes that he championed, Senator Kennedy conveniently left out how he battled for women's rights.

August 30, 2009 - 17:19 ET by QueenMumI just don't see the political motivation. The Catholic church holds what might be considered liberal views when it comes to illegal immigrants and social programs, for example. And to a Catholic, the prayers of the pontiff are especially efficacious.
I personally choose to believe that Sen. Kennedy wanted to summarize his life and included these thoughts in his request to Pope Benedict for prayers. Sen. Kennedy likely also made a final confession and was given the Last Rites of the church. The Catholic Church teaches that God forgives the sins of anyone who is sincerely sorry and makes a good confession. If it makes someone feel better to imagine Kennedy burning in hell, that's up to them.
P.S. Don't neglect to read the Pope's response. As someone who's not always been a faithful follower, I leave final judgment to God.

August 30, 2009 - 17:49 ET by QueenMumbt: The Kennedy family's whole legacy is steeped in American politics. Politics is the "family business", so to speak. It's no different than someone speaking at Joe Bag O'Donuts' funeral about what a hard-working ...fill-in-the-blank... he was. His kids weren't "used". They spoke about the father they knew. A man who was a U.S. Senator for all of their lives. What's wrong with his family members honoring the things that were important to him?

Btw...like I said above, the little I saw, Health Care most certainly was inserted...those grandkids certainly wouldn't have that of any of that all by their lonesomes. ..and Patrick in part of his eulogy was inferring health care issues.
Basically, I could give a rats rear about Kennedy or this continuing saga...I just pray that NO Bill is passed.

August 30, 2009 - 13:33 ET by HelenSYesterday I stumbled upon a little book called "Who Owns the Mountains?" which is a collection of writings by Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) and in the front, there was a little poem entitled "The Footpath to Peace". One of the lines struck me and I thought that I would be a much nicer person if I could just learn to live that way. Until I watched the morning shows today (Sunday) and all my best intentions were undone. Alas!
The line said: "...be governed by your admirations rather than by your disgusts..."
Trust me, I would like to dwell on admirable things but the news is so one-sided! All I seem to find is fodder for my disgusts!

No kidding. As if this doesn't give it away:
"A study published in the Aug. 28 Science found that N2O — a by-product of agricultural fertilizer and a number of other industrial processes — is now the biggest ozone-depleting gas in the air, and could present a real threat to the ozone layer in coming decades. And worse, unlike CFCs, N2O — which also adds to global warming — is not regulated by the Montreal Protocol, meaning there is no global effort to try to reduce emissions."

84 th. so far this year.
Eighty-four banks have fallen so far this year as tumbling home
prices and spiking unemployment pushed loan defaults upward. That's the
largest number in a year since the early 1990s, at the apex of the
savings and loan crisis. It compares with 25 bank failures last year
and three in 2007.
The failures have sapped billions from the
federal deposit insurance fund, which guarantees account holders' money
when banks go under. The fund stood at $10.4 billion in the second
quarter, its lowest point since 1992.
