For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: town halls gone wild!
We've all seen videos like this. Are they representative of the feelings Americans are having about the direction of this country, or isolated events? Will such demonstrations continue throughout the August recess and have an impact on what Congress does when it returns after Labor Day?

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 10:20 ET by wjsmom01Our representative, the wonderful Tom Perriello from the 5th district in Virginia is having meetings called "Tom in Town". Well it isn't a town hall meeting, it's a one-on-one meeting and then after you express your concerns to Tom and he tries to spin it the way he wants to, you meet with a staff member to follow-up with your concerns. No group setting, no Q&A except on an individual basis. Guess he wants to avoid the en masse showing of support for NO on the healthcare reform bill. Chicken.

Probably because wether you like them or not and think that they're working for Gore, so therefore they got what they deserve, you probably wouldn't wish this type of living hell on them. Here are some links that will give you an idea of what type of conditions they are living in. Remember, the Che shirt wearers who build themselves up as human rights activists and seem concerned about conditions in Cuba for Al Quida prisoners, don't seem to care about the gulags.

I'm not suggesting that everyone who every knew these two women should be rounded up and placed in these camps with them. However, if they had prior knowledge of this and didn't stop them, then they bare some shame for that too.
It's pretty clear that these two journalists were in country to dig up some dirt on something. Probably human rights viloations or environmental exploitation. Reagardless, they had to know that what they were doing was dangerous and largely pointless, but nonetheless chose to do it anyway. Tue, 08/04/2009 - 11:36 ET by RayRaymy immediate, reflexive opinion was that they must be yuppie elitists who felt that they can go anywhere and do anything they please, including in dangerous areas of the world. That opinion was reinforced when I'd read that one of them wrote a book with the word 'anarchist' in the title. How cool.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:28 ET by Dan The Man 2I was listening to NPR this morning and it had a bit of background to the story. It appears they are "free lance" jounalists and they were hiking around a relaively safe area but without a guide. The mountainous area between Iraq and Iran is not well defined in these areas.
There are some areas where many people congregate, one of the safe areas, and picnic and basically have a good time. These areas are well marked and close to the border 3 to 4 kilometers from the border. These adventurers as the describe themselves ventured into areas not well defined and got caught.
But as you said "yuppie elitists who felt that they can go anywhere and do anything they please" and I agree. We should let consequences of thier actions be completed. I feel like all "travelers" to dangerous areas should be able and willing to take the full consequences of their actions.
But Obama will pull them out at the cost of a few American soldiers lives.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 10:30 ET by BKeyser(I started to write "what I find so incredulous about the MSM coverage and the White House response to this is..." but that would indicate that there is one particular thing I find incredulous- I thought of several as I was typing that sentence.)
With my Prelude complete...
I find so many things incredulous about the MSM coverage and White House response to this phenomenom. First, the media continuously under-report the number of anti-ObamaCare folks at these townhalls, rallys, and protests. They're trying to portray this as just another fringe uprising that doesn't reflect EVERY SINGLE POLL in existence. Secondly, they're trying to indicate that these people aren't rank-and-file Americans; that they're some sort of 'operative' or 'underground' led organization. The White House doesn't acknowledge any sort of anti-Obamaism, and instead stages their audiences with Unions members and pro-Obama moonbats. The hypocracy of both is astoundingly overt. I saw some comment on some site the other day from some Obama supporter who's entire argument against this type of anti-Obama sentiment is that Freedomworks.org is orgainzing them.
I don't care if these folks are arriving by a GOP-sponsored bus service- no one is putting words in their mouths and legitimate concerns are being voiced. Personally, I think the MSM and the White House are spewing nothing but "unmitigated douchebaggery."

(1) Medicare in danger--may be dismantled for spare parts for the other.
(2) Plenty of wacky frills and controls are embedded--home visits by parenting advisors, death conferences.
(3) The cost is insane! A trillion--oh, please, that is just the ante.
(4) Not enough doctors--the AMA keeps supply short.
(5) May be forced to buy insurance. Nobody loves being forced. esp when we were "forced": to pay for SS and Medicare and now those promised benefits are being eroded.
(6) All this is NOT needed to fix the problems of the uninsured and underinsured.
(7) Penalizing small businesses in a recession is stupid. Perhaps the most stupid of all of this.
Somehow, 250K people figured out they could get a new car at 2/3 the price--all in a week--so they can surely figure out this mess is a mess. Why not cancel the rest of the stimulus, too--if a tenth of it is working so darn great?
Lifes Choices
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 10:36 ET by ricklailLife ChoicesAn old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men his age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it. One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table four objects:
1. A Bible
2. A silver dollar
3. A bottle of whiskey
4. A Playboy magazine'I'll just hide behind the door," the old preacher said to himself. "When he comes home from school today, I'll see which object he picks up.""If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be!
"If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a business man, and that would be okay, too."But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be.
"And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he's going to be a skirt-chasing womanizer." The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's foot-steps as he entered the house whistling and heading for his room. The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them. Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big long drink while he admired the magazine's centerfold."Lord have mercy," the old preacher disgustedly whispered. "He's gonna run for Congress!"

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 11:47 ET by slickwillie2001Another government healthcare horror story, this one from 'Oregon Care', a state of Oregon government program:
Dear Cancer Patient, So Sorry But...: http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=15186
{q] Her doctor offered hope in the new chemotherapy drug Tarceva, but the Oregon Health Plan sent her a letter telling her the cancer treatment was not approved. Instead, the letter said, the plan would pay for comfort care, including “physician aid in dying,” better known as assisted suicide. [endq]

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 11:53 ET by acaiguanaThe Eugenics movement got going really strong in the 1900's.
"Many organizations devoted to eugenic purposes arose around the world, but the movement was especially strong in England, the United States, and Germany between 1910 and 1940. From the outset the movement was closely associated with a sense of white Anglo-Saxon superiority. Sir Francis Galton (Charles Darwin's cousin), the founder of the English eugenics movement, for example, had been drawn to the study of human heredity and eugenics by his curiosity about what he called the hereditary “genius” in his own family. In the U.S. the dean of the eugenics movement was Charles B. Davenport, who was primarily responsible for organizing the Eugenics Record Office in Cold Spring Harbor, New York."
The weak spot in this short history is the lack of reference to Nazi Germany, where Eugenics was tolerated to the degree by the Western World, that Germany got away with it's 'Final Solution' under the noses of the political elite and the 'progressive' populations of the earth.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 12:03 ET by celatorExcellent. I just wanted to add that one of the most blatant advocates of eugenics in the 20th century was Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood. She was very open about it, and advocated abortion to help us lower the number of "those people" using abortion clinics. By "those people" she was referring to Blacks.

Bill Clinton Goes to North Korea
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 12:31 ET by GothampcBill Clinton is going to North Korea to assist in releasing the two journalists that are in prison there.
Isn't that supposed to be the Secretary of State's job? Exactly what is Hillary Clinton so busy with that she can't attend to this?
You won't hear it from the MSM, but Hillary Clinton is not doing her job. She has to rely on Bill to do it.

I wonder if Clinton has ever been spotted in a church since? I know he mostly only ever went in black churches, but I bet he avoids even those, these days.

C4C Success?
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:26 ET by slickwillie2001Obama administration withholds data on program:

"The limited information shows most buyers are not picking
Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, and six of the top 10

In any case the 'great success' of the program should not be measured by how many people take advantage of it. If we did the 'bales of cash out the back of a C-130' stimulus idea, I'm sure everyone that could, would take advantage of it. That doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do, or that it is stimulative in an economic sense.

11 Reasons why 2010 Elections matter! (posted last night, too)
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 14:49 ET by Cape ConservativeEvery day we hear of more and more people trying to pass bills to remove In God We Trust or ANY reference to God from the public domain. Students are no longer allowed to pray (even silently) at graduation or before the start of a football game. When was the last time you heard someone say, "God Bless America"? Political correctness rules the daily comings and goings of us all. The traditions that have held our country together through thick and thin over the years are being attacked. It appears that lifestyles are more important than lives to many of our citizens and leaders.
Americans are now at a crossroad where important decisions must be made. May God guide us and our leaders from this path toward this great country’s destruction. This is NOT the America our founding fathers fought for. It is TIME to speak out, America!
Yes, It Can and Has Happened!
What would you say if I gave you 11 reasons why the elections in 2010 will be the most important in the ENTIRE history of the United States?
1. What if I had told you in October 2008, before the last presidential election, that before Barack Obama's first 100 days in office, the federal government would be in control of both the mortgage and the banking industries? That 19 of America's largest banks would be forced to undergo stress tests by the federal government which would determine if they were insufficiently capitalized, so they must be supervised by the government? Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
2. What if I had told you that within Barack Obama's first 100 days in office the federal government would be the largest shareholder in the US Big-Three automakers: Ford, GM, and Chrysler? That the government would kick out the CEO's of these companies and appoint hand-picked executives with zero experience in the auto industry and that executive compensation would be determined, not by a Board of Directors, but by the government? Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
3. What if I had told you that Barack Obama would appoint 21 Czars, without Congressional approval, accountable only to him, not to the voters, who would have control over a wide range of US policy decisions. That there would be a Stimulus Accountability Czar, an Urban Czar, a Compensation Czar, an Iran Czar, an Auto Industry Czar, a Cyber Security Czar, an Energy Czar, a Bank Bailout Czar, and more than a dozen other government bureaucrats with unchecked regulatory powers over US domestic and foreign policy. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
4. What if I had told you that the federal deficit would be $915 billion in the first six months of the Obama presidency - with a projected annual deficit of $1.75 trillion - triple the $454.8 billion in 2008, for which the previous administration was highly criticized by Obama and his fellow Democrats. That Congress would pass Obama's $3.53 trillion federal budget for fiscal 2010. That the projected deficit over the next ten years would be greater than $10 trillion. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
5. What if I had told you that the Obama Justice Department would order FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high-value detainees captured on the battlefield and held at US military detention facilities in Afghanistan. That Obama would order the closing of the Guantanamo detention facility with no plan for the disposition of the 200-plus individuals held there. That several of the suspected terrorists at Guantanamo would be sent to live in freedom in Bermuda at the expense of the US government. That our returning US veterans would be labeled terrorists and put on a watch list. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
6. What if I had told you that the federal government would seek powers to seize key companies whose failures could jeopardize the financial system. That a new regulatory agency would be proposed by Obama to control loans, ***********s, mortgage-backed securities, and other financial products offered to the public. Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
7. What if I had told you that Obama would travel to the Middle East, bow before the Saudi king, and repeatedly apologize for America's past actions. That he would travel to Latin America where he would warmly greet Venezuela's strongman Hugo Chavez and sit passively in the audience while Nicaraguan Marxist thug Daniel Ortega charged America with terrorist aggression in Central America.Would you have said, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
8. Okay, now what if I were to tell you that Obama wants to dismantle conservative talk radio through the imposition of a new "Fairness Doctrine." That he wants to curtail the First Amendment rights of those who may disagree with his policies via internet blogs, cable news networks, or advocacy ads. That most major network television and most newspapers will only sing his phrases like state-run media in communist countries? Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
9. What if I were to tell you that the Obama Justice Department is doing everything it can to limit your Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. That the federal government wants to reinstate the so-called assault weapons ban which would prohibit the sale of any type of firearm that requires the shooter to pull the trigger every time a round is fired. That Obama's Attorney General wants to eliminate the sale of virtually all handguns and ammunition, which most citizens choose for self-defense. Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
10.What if I were to tell you that the Obama plan is to eliminate states rights guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment and give the federal government sweeping new powers over policies currently under the province of local and state governments and voted on by the people. That Obama plans to control the schools, energy production, the environment, healthcare, and the wealth of every US citizen. Would you say, "C'mon, that will never happen in America."
11.What if I were to tell you that the president, the courts, and the federal government have ignored the US Constitution and have seized powers which the founders of our country fought to restrict. That our last presidential election may have been our last truly free election for some time to come. That our next presidential election may look similar to the one recently held in Iran. (And may be under the review of A.C.O.R.N.) I know, I know what you will say. That will never happen in America!
If we don't do everything in our power to stop this madness in 2010, may God have mercy on our souls.
Please pass this on to every freedom-loving American you know. Thank you.

I'll state this as basically as I can, and I'll include as many monosyllabic words as possible. The point of opening commerce to Syria on a case by case basis is "part of a broader strategy of trying to get the country to turn away from its alliances with Iran and Islamic militant groups." I mean, DUH!!!
Maybe you can understand this version. You know how the neighbors on your street hate you, and consistently let their dogs poop on your lawn as a petty way of messing with you? Well the Syria/US commerce diplomacy is like you going to your next door neighbor's house with a fruitcake at Christmas and trying to make amends, because it's the only way you can persuade her to keep her dog out of your yard. Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:55 ET by Cape ConservativeYou know how good for our country I believe our senior senator is! I can't even begin to get started on the many harms to America he ALONE in his great wisdom? (just ask him!) has been primarily responsible for!
And tonight I hear they are crying 'racist' - definitely a 'HATE CRIMES' offense about the joker poster! Of course last year the Bush joker image in Vanity Fair was 'art' - THEY ALL MAKE ME WANT TO VURP! (love that word, Cool Arrow)
In my humble opinion, and one I have voiced to my senior senator many times, a crime is always a HATE crime and there is absolutely NO NEED for this bill of his! Of course, calling his office is a lesson in futility...ask if he and his family will be covered by the health plan, oh yes, says his staff. Right! They lie with every breath they take!
And thanks for explaining the astro-turf expression...I didn't have a clue. At least (I hope) it isn't as offensive as their description of ME and others who attended the Tea Parties! ILTK: Syria is a
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:42 ET by stratmanILTK:
Syria is a Socialist (Ba'ath Party) and Secular Arab country. They earned their reputation as terrorist supporter and malevolent actor towards the United States (and Israel).
Note that there are hundreds of entries concerning diplomatic negotiations with Syria since the 1940's alone as seen here. There have been numerous carrots offered to Syria for decades. A lot of good that has done, huh?
Diplomatic back channel conversations happen as well. I am confident our American diplomats and political leaders have made crystal clear what is expected from Syria and what will be reciprocated. The Syrians have consistently chosen to align with enemies of the USA.
No one expects Syria to act against their own interests. But, I expect our American diplomacy to not "give away the farm" or any piece of it on "hope" or Pan-Arabianism victimhood belief from the president. This is especially significant in light of the fact that carrots given to Syria in the past were of little lasting benefit for America. (Think North Korea, for instance)
On the flip side, sticks given to the Syrians have not toppled them... yet. But despotism of whatever flavor has always fallen. (Think USSR) And trade embargoes can be re-instituted.
Unless some high channel communications, preferrably documented and public, of tangible, mutual reciprocity has been proffered by Syria, then US carrots should not be freely given. (Think Cuba)
Just because Syrian malevolence has not been toppled or crushed so far is not reason to continue to give carrots that have not and, historically, do not work in the grand scheme of relations. Compare the number of nations that have changed from malevolent to benevolent because of carrots versus sticks. No matter how smart the Left think they are, they seem to never learn from history these big picture things.
Stratman, I thank you for
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:55 ET by Another Dead KennedyStratman, I thank you for your well presented argument. Of course you're wrong about everything, but that's to be expected. (grin) No actually, I agree with you almost entirely. I'd just like to point out a very distinct difference between liberals and conservatives, and why so much "hope" was put in to the Obama presidency: liberals seem much more willing to attempt diplomacy before writing off our enemies. See, doing nothing does nothing. Sanctions piss people off. Obama stated during the campaign that his office would be willing to sit down and talk to Iran in hopes of accomplishing some sort of mutual agreement. I completely understand that the rulers of these countries have done horrific things, to their own countrymen as well as others around the world. But the practice of the last 8 years of shutting down all communication with our enemies has left us in the exact same position we were 8 years ago, only the enemies have grown stronger. I'm not trying to change your mind about what should be done, but I hope you understand where I'm coming from. I want our government to try to reestablish a dialogue with our enemies to make our world a safer place.
"If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen." Ronald Reagan
My Opinions
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 21:49 ET by stratmanI recognize the ideological differences you reference.
I do not accept that Conservatives believe only sticks should be presented. The same with old school Democrats and carrots. At some point, dealer's choice, just like the school yard bully or out of control child, despots must be dealt with definitively.
Syria is a known provider of intelligence, hardware and refuge for bad actors in the world. Syria's actions have led to or caused the deaths of Americans. Syria should not be rewarded at all until regime change occurs or the current despot publically endorses and shows course correction. (Think Lybia)
My impression is that current Liberals oftentimes veer towards trying carrots yet another time even though it has not worked historically. Leftists seem to always try the square peg in the round hole. Both groups display a denial of history that such acts or behaviours of despots exceedingly rarely ever change due to the carrot approach. It just hasn't been beneficial in the despot's thinking.
Stupidity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a better result despite never resulting in a better outcome.
The difference between the continuous carrot approach, resulting in no lasting benefit, and the stick approach, until there is lasting benefit, is that the carrot approach teaches the despot they can weasel benefits from their enemies without suffering ultimate calamity (Think North Korea), and the stick approach teaches despots they are on their own until they are either crushed by another nation that has had enough or they weaken sufficiently for a coup to change course.
Of course the despot could die and the new leader(s) may effect change, but historically, how often is that change to one of benevolence versus more of the same?
I'm all for giving the other nation an opportunity using the carrot/stick approach whereby the former lessens and the latter increases if resistence to changing bad behaviour occurs. Make war on us or help those that make war on us, then all sticks... and a lot of stones.
I came across an article a
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:40 ET by celatorI came across an article a couple of days ago that noted the airplane parts program was being stepped up...trying to find it to share the reference.
It reminds me of the 1930's era when Germany was forbidden to build fighter aircraft or bombers or any other military aircraft.
So what the German government did was develop the Junker series of "passenger planes", which was permitted. What we later realized was that the pilots flying these planes were also training for bombing runs etc.
The Junkers were designed in such a manner that they were easily converted to bombers, which, in fact, was exactly what they did.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 16:46 ET by slickwillie2001Hannity just reported on his radio program that the Bamster has 'reassigned' Patrick Fitzgerald. Is he trying to save his buddy Rezko, or others, or is Fitz getting too close to getting something on the Bamster?

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 16:54 ET by bigtimerI switch back and forth during the week between Malzberg, Dobbs, and Hannity...so glad you just filled me in regarding this.
I wondered how long Fitz would last....he must be getting much too close to O and crew....I think he has been for quite awhile and sitting on it.
I just shake my head, nothing happens to the dems when it comes right down to it the majority of the time....as the repubs remain politely quiet as they have for more years than I can count now.

S*&^ass Durbin
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 18:04 ET by ricklailI heard Boortz telling that Dickie boy has told Specter not to worry about the protesters at his town hall meeting- they were all plants for the insurance companies. He has told other Dimwits not to pay attention to the protesters because they have been hired by the insurance companies. When will people see through this crap? The insurance companies will go broke sometime in the middle of the month having to pay all these people. Please Durbin don't insult my intelligence like that. Common sense tells me better.

If you see anybody publicly opposing President Obama’s plan to implement a government-centric overhaul of the health care system, the White House wants you to report that person (or persons) ASAP.
From the White House website:
There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.
Emphasis added. Of course, as we’ve seen in the health care debate to date, the term “disinformation” is used by the Obama White House as a catchall to describe any opposition to the President’s push for single-payer, government-run health care — meaning the White House wants to be informed of any forwarded emails or blog posts or any “casual conversations” that could be taken as opposition to their health care overhaul plan.
The White House has, as yet, offered no explanation of what it is they plan to do with the tips on policy opposition they hope to receive from citizen informers.
Interestingly, as Jake Tapper pointed out on Twitter this morning, the title of that post on the White House is a quote from John Adams’ 1770 “Argument in Defense of the Soldiers in the Boston Massacre Trials.”

TT - do you suppose this has been removed from the web?
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:42 ET by Cape ConservativeI was listening to Howie Carr this afternoon and he couldn't find it...he, too, had heard Rush talk about it. Maybe they realized they were going to be in even deeper doodoo if they followed through on this one! Too funny...there are lots of Obama clips in earlier years where he said 'protesting' was a good thing...just NOT allowed when it is 'THE ONE' that is the subject of the protesters ;-) Such ARROGANCE!
I guess all the politicians are running scared now - no public announcements of planned town hall meetings. The staff of Ed Markey, D/MA, hung up when a caller asked the time and location of a planned town hall at one of the UMass campuses...others are now telling callers there will be only teleconference town halls!!
They KNOW they will catch it from those 80+% of Americans who are NOT in favor of more government intrusion in their lives, much less being in a position to determine who gets what health care treatment!!!!
I was looking for it too.
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:49 ET by celatorI was looking for it too. Couldn't find it. They must have pulled it after Limbaugh exposed it.
Would not have been surprised to see the document suggesting that kids turn their parents' names into the government if the parents opposed the Obama Health Care Rationing bill.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

I sure hope the great environmentalist opened his bank account (that is stuffed to overflowing from all the carbon offsets he has conned people into sending his way) for all travel costs and any other expenses involved in retrieving these 'innocents' - maybe AG volunteered to create a special internet just for North Korea.
Now let's see how many of our tax dollars the government is going use to free the recent 3 'innocents' who just happened to wander into Iran! I say you wander off course, you pay the consequences...sort of like the signs in an antique shop...you break it, you bought it ;-)
Too many in today's society have been raised to think they can do what they when they want where they want...and NEVER have to pay the consequences! After all, they've been taught from childhood that 'someone' will always be there to pick up the pieces. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY is a lost value to these people!

Matthews - Spector
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 19:59 ET by Radical1979I've noticed Chris Matthews really pushing Spector for the next Pa senate election because he's the best man for the job. It's all a big set up.
I heard awhile ago that Rendell wants Spector's seat when he's done bankrupting, excuse me, governing Pennsylvania. Rendell wants Spector to stay there for one more term then leave so he can jump in. Joe Sestak may put an end to that. I don't like dems, but I may become a democrat for the PA primary just to try to get rid of Spector.

North Korea is misunderstood. Put yourself in their shoes.
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 20:20 ET by Rush FanToday CNN's Rick Sanchez was discussing North Korea and the release of the two journalist who have been held hostage.
Unbelievably, but understandingly, the two liberals Sanchez interviewed regarding North Korea, Jill Dougherty, CNN's Foreign Affairs Correspondent, and Evans Revere, President, Korea Society, minimized the brutality in that country.
Here are excerpts from the transcript:
SANCHEZ: Now on the other question that we were talking with Evans Revere about. Why do they, as an American, who just watches from an outside, not an insider like you who studied this, why do they continue to act like a rogue nation?
DOUGHERTY: You know Rick, I have been to North Korea and it seems to me that when you try to put yourself in their shoes, you kind of understand some of the paranoia that they have. They are pretty much paranoid about the outside world. They believe that other countries, specifically the United States, want to destroy them. They also know that there is money to be made in doing the things that they do, selling weapons, selling nuclear technology, et cetera. And they are desperate for money they will do anything, sell anything to survive. To them, it seems rational. To us it seems like rogue nation, but it's business as usual. That's what they do to survive.
SANCHEZ: Evans, I'm going to give you the invitation now to give us a little bit of the gore that you teased us with moments ago with obviously not being too crazy, because there might be some people having a late lunch or an early dinner. But are the stories that we hear about the atrocities that take place in that country true or confirmable?
DOUGHERTY: Well, there are ... oh, I'm sorry.
SANCHEZ: Either way. I know both of you...
REVERE: Go ahead, Jill and I will follow up.
SANCHEZ: Jill, why don't you start with this?
DOUGHERTY: From the observation that I have and from what I've seen, there is of course -- there are people who are very hungry in that country. There are people who are abused. There are people who are in prison and there are definite violations of human rights according to the reports that we have. But there are a lot of different reports and some of those may or may not be true. But you would have to say that it is a very controlled society. And that repression is used to keep people in line.
SANCHEZ: Draw a picture for us, if you would, Evans.
REVERE: Just to add to that, I think what Jill has said is right on the mark. There have been lots of reports, books, articles and confessionals, if you will, provided by defectors who have come out of the North and these convey some very horrific tales.
Once again, sometimes there can be some exaggerations, but the overall message, the overall picture that's been drawn, is one that is very similar to the picture that Jill just described. It is a very closed, it's a very secretive, it's a very fearful and I think the word paranoid is probably an accurate word to use.
And if you look at their behavior, a lot of their behavior can be described as the actions and the statements and the policies not of a strong country but of a fragile one and a country that fears that it may not be able to exist. So a lot of their actions have a certain internal logic. It is not a logic that we like or feel comfortable with but it's a logic that allows them to survive through some of the mechanisms that Jill just described.

Isn't it strange that no one mentioned that North Korea is a communist country?
