For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: some inconvenient truths about Cash for Clunkers:
The White House and Congress may be giving the "cash for clunkers" program a reprieve, but one can't help wondering how many dealers and customers will have the confidence to go forward at this point. Things sound like a total mess in the showrooms. "There is absolute frustration across the board," Alex Kurkin, a lawyer based in Miami who represents several car dealerships, tells The Lede today. "As of this morning, they're not really confident about any deals, and no one can give them advice about what they should be telling their customers."
Watch the following must-see video about this matter -- surprisingly from the folks at the New York Times!!! -- and offer your thoughts.

Victory for the Vulcans: NYFD Hiring Discrimination
August 1, 2009 - 10:27 ET by j. frank wilsonJudge Sotomayor's nomination is moving forward, toward a confirmation vote by the Senate.
During her Confirmation Hearings considerable time was spent on a few lines from a few speeches she has given, rather than on the very large body of opinions she has written or joined.
The one opinion that did receive attention, however, was the New Haven firefighters' case. A recent decision by US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis presents an interesting new view of of one department's hiring practices, and therefore casts new light on Judge Sotomayor's opinion.
Judge Garaufis held that the New York City Fire Department discriminated in its hiring practices from 1999 to 2002 so obviously there was no need for a trial before ruling against the city.
Here is one article on Judge Garaufis' opinion:
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/07/22/2009-07-22_nyfd_written_exams_excluded_hundreds_of_black_and_hispanic_firefighters_federal_.html
Although they gave the New Haven case considerable coverage, somehow this NYC decision - in their backyard - wasn't covered by Faux Noise, Ole BlunderRush, Sheer "Hot Air" InSannity, Lou Doggs, Ann Falter, the Little Guy, or any other of the usual suspects...
j. frank wilson,
August 1, 2009 - 11:12 ET by Ascended Conservativei read the article and found no "proof" of discrimination. just that "they" found proof. i would really like to know why they claim the tests were discriminatory. do you have any insight? are specific questions targeting minorities? is there hard evidence of bias or is it simply a statistical arguement? if it's statistical, then your accusation, as well as many other similiar racial charges championed by progressives, will most probably fail miserably.
i would very much like to see the "hard evidence" that these written tests were in fact discriminatory. considering the many phony conclusions drummed up by some people, i hesitate to blindly trust the judgement of others. afterall, we are all human and subject to make mistakes.
in cases like this, i would prefer to see the facts for myself. if it is true, then i am glad that the tests are being corrected and would like to know who instituted these tests, because they should be fired for incompetence. but if this is another phony allegation, then please sir, stop wasting out time!

Race Hucksters Again
August 1, 2009 - 11:58 ET by slickwillie2001To the race hucksters, any time that federally-favored minorities don't score equally in any kind of test, they claim that as evidence of racial discrimination. They will not face the fact that there are differences in average IQs of different races, which is an obvious reason for the different outcome. You can also look at average entrance SATs at American colleges, graduation rates in schools, or a hundred other measures.
I would also consider the possibility that those being tested, firefighters in this case, have been corrupted by the soft racism of Affirmative Action, and feel or know that they don't have to work as hard as others to succeed. Others don't know that is happening, but their behavior is affected similarly. When they come up against a test that treats all equally, they suddenly feel disadvantaged.
A different outcome doesn't mean discrimination, sometimes it just means some worked harder than others.

August 1, 2009 - 12:29 ET by candanceNational media never covered the New Haven case until Sotomayor was nominated and the case advanced to the Supreme Court. Unless this federal judge is being considered for promotion - or the case is about to be heard by SCOTUS - the comparison is apples to oranges.
Secondly, this judge here seems to have done the same thing as Sotomayor. He automatically took the side of the minorities without hearing the whole case. Had the news reported on the New Haven case at the time she reviewed it, it would have sounded almost exactly like this.
Thirdly, since there was no trial and the article offers no specifics on what counted as proof, I remain skeptical. Lefties love to wax paranoid about corrupt judges and unfair trials. Until a decision favors their POV.

Every news source mentions this "derogatory term". None of them have the will to tell their readers, listeners or viewers what was actually said. Is this term so vile it can't even be hinted at? Does the public need total shelter from this term?
Perhaps this is just one more example of PC run amok. After all this is the same University of Hawaii that changed it's school nickname and logo several years back because it could have been identified by some as having gay implications. normal sales
August 1, 2009 - 16:37 ET by ledgerhedgerif car sales are at a 10 million annual rate, we would expect 833,000 normal sales/month. if only 25% of trade-ins met the low mileage number wouldn't we expect the first Billion to be in the normal sales for the month. no wonder they ran out of money. How could they think it would last 6 months?
833k*4.5K*.25=937 million

If I were running a hotel
August 1, 2009 - 22:23 ET by Gat New YorkIf I were running a hotel chain and a marketing manager recommended a cash incentive program to people to stay at the hotel, I would expect that the manager would have done a thorough job of projecting what the annual budget would be for that incentive.
If the manager did not and the budget was only good for one month out of 12, then the manager would be fired. Because the company cannot increase the budget and now will have to deal with very upset customers who expected to get that incentive.
The Federal Government does not have that problem. They did the worst job of projecting I have ever seen for the cash for clunkers to run out of money after only 30 days. So what do they do? Easy, they just print more money! What another billion or two? Afterall, it's not their money. I can't wait to see what they do with healthcare.
Franken Relishes Policy Making
August 1, 2009 - 23:46 ET by GregEGo figure, who doesn't relish power?
This part was interesting.......
"I thought that was a victory," he said in an interview with The
Associated Press. "Every conservative would say I want someone who's
not a judicial activist and won't make law from the bench but that's
exactly what Justice Thomas is doing. So I was proud of that."
The next question from the AP interviewer was "What examples do you have of Justice Thomas doing that, Senator?"
.....oh wait a minute, no it wasn't.
ABC's "V"

The similarities between the "Visitors" and the Obama administration are quite amusing.

I had forgotten about the similarities between that and what seems to be going on around us today . . .

Typical government
August 3, 2009 - 05:18 ET by RR GOPTypical government mentality-destroy brand new stuff and replace it with even brand newer stuff.
Rather like all that equipment they can't wait to sell off, mothball and let rot, put out for nuke tests, turn into artificial reefs, sell for scrap, etc.
Then something happens and they're whining about how unprepared our military is and how urgent it is we build a whole bunch of new stuff...only to be gotten rid of before too long.
One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
