OUTRAGE!!!
July 17, 2009 - 09:43 ET by dscotthttp://iowahawk.type...
Indeed, it is only through these differences that America can forge
a better, more diverse tradition of legal justice. As you know, the
Latina women of my culture are passionate and fiery, and if we learn
our famously hot blooded men have been cheating with some raven-haired puta at the cantina, there will be hell to pay. As a Justicia on the Tribunal Supremo I will be naturally vigilant for any colleague who strays from the law, and will not hesitate to clobber them with the rodillo of established legal precedence. Afterwards, when we have reached consensus, there will be hot makeup majority opinions.
This
is exactly the kind of wise, precedent-faithful Latina legal approach
that I believe will be welcome by others on the Supreme Court bench,
all of whom bring their own unique genetic legal wisdom and instinctual
empathy. Justices Roberts and Souter for example, with their aloof,
sexless, constipated, emotionally-stunted WASPy intellects and natural
affinity for preppy white collar criminals. Justice Stevens has this as
well, along with a keen grasp for the legal issues facing Americans
with senile dementia. As an Irishman, Justice Kennedy enjoys a natural
"gift of the gab" and poetically tragic alcoholism. Like you, I imagine
that Justice Breyer can be kind of pushy and whiny, but we should also
remember that as a Jew he is probably very skilled at cases that
involve complicated numbers and math. To the casual observer, it
probably seems absurd to have greasy Italian "goodfellas" like Justices
Alito and Scalia working inside the legal system, but if we give them a
chance they may eventually break the code of Omerta and finally turn
state's evidence against their Cosa Nostra bosses. Yes, many have
criticized Justice Thomas for being a self-hating "Oreo" and "Uncle
Tom," but I like to think that deep inside him still lurks the the DNA
of an angry Cadillac-driving streetwise Superfly, ready to show "The
Man" that his pimp hand is strong.
Not only should this Archie Bunker characture bigot not be confirmed to the SCOTUS, she must be removed from the Bench, period!!!

Local government budgets
July 17, 2009 - 10:03 ET by BlondeI was just curious, so fellow NBers, what are your local governements doing during this recession?
I was totally shocked to see Broward County has reversed its first (no surprise here) intention to raise taxes. Or so 7 of the 9 commissioners have stated. The Manager has proposed a cut in services and *shudder* staff lay-offs (it's going to be rough to see the road crews cut down to only twelve, so that eight workers are standing around, but I'll live). The county manager has programmed in a 7% property tax increase, so we'll see what these clowns do with her budget, though.
So what are your local communities doing? Raising taxes and spending their way out of this recession, a la Joe Biden, or sucking it up and doing away with "non-essential" services?
Personally, I don't care that the library will be closed on Sunday or that the free Easter-Egg hunt goes away, regional parks will be closed on Tuesday, free computer classes at the library go away, etc. etc.
Just curious.

Massachusetts is going to
July 17, 2009 - 12:07 ET by ThisnThatMassachusetts is going to try a new insurance payment scheme. Without going into details, let it be said that the intent is still to give away our money to those that don't deserve it. Lynn Nicholas, president of the Massachusetts Hospital Association and a commission member, said payments must also be adjusted for socioeconomic factors, because “someone who lives in Brockton and doesn’t speak English’’ might require more intense care than “someone who lives in Newton or Wellesley with a lot of other resources around them.’’
Yep -- gotta take care of every damn illegal in this country, don't we? And notice -- an outright admission that illegal non-citizens are costing us much more than legal residents. Massachusetts doesn't bat an eye about this, though. Way to go Mass -- home of Ted Kennedy and Barney Franks.

say NO! to QAHCAA!
July 17, 2009 - 10:35 ET by RousseI am a big fan of Post Card Correspondence. The nice thing about sending a post card to your elected representative, is that it keeps you from writing too much, and you can do it quickly.
Please, I encourage everyone reading here to send a post card to all your elected officials and write this on the back (or a similar sentiment):
NO! to QAHCAA! Then sign your name and address. Another advantage to using post cards is that ordinary letter in an envelope must go through an intensive screening process at the House, Senate, and White House post offices. A post card passes through more quickly.
I found some post cards with a photo of donkeys standing under a shed, so I guess you know I bought them all. If you are reading here, then you can easily find your Congressional representatives' addresses. Send 'em a post card, and let them know what you think about QAHCAA. Don't forget the majority and minority leaders too, in the House and Senate, because they represent you too. And the President, of course.
Great Tip, Rousse
July 17, 2009 - 10:55 ET by BlondeA question...do they answer your postcards? If so, is it a typical "canned" letter.

Post Cards
July 17, 2009 - 11:30 ET by RousseBlonde---I've been sending post cards to my Congress Critters for years. I'd say the return response is about 75%. Most of the time the response is "canned" but occasionally I get a personal answer. I like post cards because it is something "they" have to handle.
They can delete my eamail, and turn off their fax machine (Lloyd Bensten's speciality), but they have to do something with a piece of mail---they have to log it. And a post card is quick and easy to read, so I know my message has a better chance of being seen.

Soldier's Set-Up Lawsuit Dismissed
July 17, 2009 - 10:51 ET by j. frank wilsonThe set-up (in my personal opinion) lawsuit brought by Major Stefan Frederick Cook has been dismissed:
http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/164/story/779860.html?storylink=omni_popular
For those not familiar with this sad tale, in May 2009 Maj. Cook volunteered for service in Afghanistan. Then he sued various people because he claimed President Obama isn't Constitutionally qualified to be President.
The ugly details may be found at:
http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/news/breaking_news/story/777472.html
Now Mr. Obama was elected in November 2008 and took office at the end of January 2009. Is it possible Maj. Cook found out about this after April 2009? It was on tv and everything.
Additionally, because he volunteered, all Maj. Cook had to do was withdraw his request. A lawsuit was not necessary to accomplish this. However, that's what he filed, with a correspondence-school lawyer as his attorney.
That's why I stated this is a "set-up."
Additionally, of course, didn't another solider get called up on very short notice to fill the slot Maj. Cook had volunteered for (apparently never intending to fulfill that commitment)?
There is a very interesting opinion piece about this matter at:
http://www.examiner.com/x-12278-Louisville-Independent-Examiner~y2009m7d16-Major-Stefan-Frederick-Cook-USAR--conduct-unbecoming-an-officer-and-a-gentleman
It comes as no surprise that Sheer "Hot Air" InSannity gave airtime to Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook. Of course, this was a very one-sided presentation of the case.
Another one-sided (and inaccurate) view may be found at:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/15/soldier-claims-obama-isnt-legal-president-doesnt-deploy/
Maj. Cook's attorney claimed victory because the US Army withdrew his deployment order "without explanation." Is it SOP for the Army to provide detailed explanations of its orders?

July 17, 2009 - 21:04 ET by j. frank wilson"Play the race card?" Is that right wingnut speak for pointing out racism when I see it? Or should I be like you and simply close my eyes to the obvious?
No thanks.
I happen to believe Sir Ian Kershaw was absolutely correct:
"The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference."
I call 'em as I see 'em.
Perhaps you prefer the great conservative Edmund Burke?
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
That works for me. You betcha!
PS: Your reply was off topic. But then, there really isn't any defense for Major Cook, is there?
The racist playing the race card pontificating on racism
July 17, 2009 - 21:14 ET by UnsaneIs that right wingnut speak for pointing out racism when I see it? Or should I be like you and simply close my eyes to the obvious? Show me the racism, frankie. I have yet to see a Rightist on this thread make a racial issue of anything. In fact, I can see how people can think YOU a racist, as you are the ONLY one on this thread who has played the race card.
Maybe if you took the time to stop pontificating and sounding holier than thou, and actually proved your allegations, you might get more respect.
Besides, by playing the race card every time your God, His Majesty the Shahinshah, whose keen eye is the astrolabe of the substantive sun - His truth-discerning heart is the celestial observatory of Attributes - He is of noble lineage, of joyous countenance - of the model, most loving marriage - of right disposition - of open brow - of well-proportioned frame - of magnanimous nature - the honey-tongued teacher of the English language - of lofty genius - the inciter of thrills and tingles - of pure purpose - of enduring faith - of perfect wisdom - emitter of the most fragrant, sweetest flatulence - begirt with varied talents - of wide capacity - of high honor - of the most masterful, soaring oratory - of splendid courage - He who becomes Death, the destroyer of flies - with the unimpeachable reputation for integrity - of the greatest political savvy - of right judgment - of choice counsel - of networked genome - of generosity unfeigned - the emblem of the American people - astonishingly ambitious, brave - of boundless forgiveness, abundant in graciousness - the most careful thinker - at peace with all-compendium of dominion - lucid, impeccably centered - of elegance unmatched by mere mortals - true American royalty - our own personal Jesus - of plenteous sincerity - multiple of single-minded warriors - of chiseled pecs - abounding in wealth - accumulator of the world's rarities - sophisticated - of pure heart - unspotted by the world - leader of the spiritual realm - elegant, articulate, Zen-like - of enduring alertness! How has He been gathered together into one place? Or how doth a single body upbear Him on the shoulders of genius?
- says anything, especially when unwarranted, I can ONLY take that as your constant demand that no one be allowed to criticize Him, that everyone in the world SHUT UP.
But really, frankie, you should be more grateful. We aren't treating Him nearly the way you and your ilk treated Bush.
Finally, take MLK's advice: judge men not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. You know, as the far reaching majority of the NB community does each and every day. Try it sometime, frankie. You might like it.

@DeRange'd:
July 20, 2009 - 12:46 ET by j. frank wilsonMore fantasy. I didn't say the case should be thrown from court based on spelling. More ROMA from you. This is a set-up case that never should have been brought. Facts, not spelling, spell that fact out.
Apparently you are a supporter of frivolous lawsuits. I'm not.
The fact that Major Cook's lawyer claims that a retired General supports a case then he apparently states he does not I find odd. An attorney so incompetent she can't get the basics right makes me question her abilities. Maybe if she'd gone to a law school accredited by the ABA she could have gotten it right.
BTW, is this lady yet licensed to practice law in the state of Georgia...?
@ the rude, hateful, extremely angry frankie:
July 23, 2009 - 00:14 ET by UnsaneMore fantasy. I didn't say the case should be thrown from court based on spelling. More ROMA from you. This is a set-up case that never should have been brought. Facts, not spelling, spell that fact out. OK. So, you say this...but then, apparently, when you scold and lecture people online, you don't take into account your own behavior:
You'd think she could at least spell the General's first name correctly... Um, how else do I interpret this comment, frankie? Sure, you are not SAYING that the case should be thrown out for spelling. But in any case, this is a tired red herring on your part. The fact that the General's first name isn't spelled correctly is not germane to the case. Hell, people misspell both my first AND last names all the time to my great annoyance but I don't make a federal case of it each and every time.
Apparently you are a supporter of frivolous lawsuits. I'm not. Actually, I bet you are a big supporter of lawsuits - depending on the target. Your God, His Majesty The Shahinshah, is exempt from absolutely everything in your world - criticism, questions - anything at all.
If you are so deeply concerned with "frivolous lawsuits", as much as I tire of Conspiros - why don't you tell Him to release His f-ing birth certificate just to END the discussion? He releases the birth certificate, crap like this goes away.
The fact that Major Cook's lawyer claims that a retired General supports a case then he apparently states he does not I find odd. An attorney so incompetent she can't get the basics right makes me question her abilities. Hmmm. Could it be he reversed himself? Maybe if she'd gone to a law school accredited by the ABA she could have gotten it right. Pure elitist snobbery. Should we throw out the case then based on your elitist snobbery?
BTW, is this lady yet licensed to practice law in the state of Georgia...? Notice that throughout your post you do everything and anything but address the case.
It's easier than insisting that He end all speculation and BS just by releasing His damned birth certificate. I have NO problem showing mine to those who ask with a need to know. Why doesn't He?

Obama has made a difference and accomplished a few things
July 17, 2009 - 11:12 ET by ThisnThatThis isn't from me, just something I picked up. 1. Offended the Queen of England and anyone who thinks Winston Churhill was an honorable man.2. Bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia.3. Praised the Marxist Daniel Ortega.4. Kissed Hugo Chavez on the cheek.5. Endorsed the Socialist Evo Morales of Bolivia.6. Announced we would meet with Iranians with no pre-conditions.7. Gave away billions to AIG also without pre-conditions.8. Massively Expanded the bailouts.9. Insulted everyone who has ever loved a Special Olympian..10. Tripled our national debt in his first 100 days in office.11. Announced a termination of the space defense system the day after the North Koreans launched an ICBM.12. Despite the urgings of his own CIA director and the prior 4 CIA directors, released information on intelligence gathering.13. Accepted without public comment the fact that five of his cabinet members cheated on their taxes and two others withdrew after they couldn't take the heat.14. Appointed a Homeland Security Chief who quickly identified as "dangers to the nation", groups including veterans of the military and opponents to abortion on demand....and who ordered that the word "terrorism" no longer be used but instead referred to such acts as "man made disasters".15. Circled the globe so he could openly apologize for America's greatness.16. Told the Mexican President that the violence in their country was because of us.17. Politicized the census by moving it into the White House from its Department of Commerce origins.18. Appointed as Attorney General the man who orchestrated the forced removal and expulsion (from America to Cuba ) of a nine-year old whose mother died trying to bring him to a life of freedom in the United States .19. Salutes as heroes three Navy SEALS who took down three terrorists who threatened one American life... and the next day announces members of the Bush administration will likely stand trial for "torturing" a terrorist who had played a part in killing 3000 Americans by pouring water up their nose..20. Air Force One over New York City with a fighter close behind.21. Sent his National Defense Advisor to Europe to assure Europe that the U.S. will no longer treat Israel in a special manner and they might be on their own with the Muslims.22. Began the process of nationalizing the Auto Industry and the Insurance industry.23. Announced that for intents and purposes the Health Insurance Industry will be nationalized, despite the fact that such a thing is a miserable failure everywhere it's been put in place.

Did you see the debate (more like argument) between Rachel
July 17, 2009 - 11:28 ET by Rush FanMaddow and Pat Buchanan on Rachel Maddow's show last night (Thursday, July 16)? Buchanan tore into Maddow for supporting Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who Buchanan believes is an affirmitive action candidate and a racist.
Here are a few brief highlights from the transcript:
BUCHANAN: I say, you know, I think what they ought to do-they ought to defend the legitimate rights of white working-class folks who are the victims of discrimination, because that's the right thing to do and because it's the politically right thing to do. It so happens that here, that doing the right thing is the right political thing, standing up for Frank Ricci. We saw the face of-the face of a victim of these policies. Rachel, you and your friends admire up there and in New York and you never look at these guys who are working class guys with their own dreams, just like Sonia Sotomayor.
MADDOW: Pat, I don't need a lecture from you about whether or not I know what working class.
BUCHANAN: You certainly do, Rachel.
(CROSSTALK)
MADDOW: I really don't need a lecture from you about what I think about working class Americans or what anybody else in New York, including Sonia Sotomayor who grew up in the Bronx thinks about working-class Americans.
Here are two links on YouTube (I haven't watched either). Both YouTube titles imply that Rachel Maddow "evicerated" Pat Buchanan, but it actually was the other way around.

US Military & Faith-Based Events
July 17, 2009 - 12:33 ET by j. frank wilsonThere is an Urban Legend email circulating that claims President Obama has instituted a new policy that US Military personnel can not participate in "faith-based events."
The particular event cited is the "Catch A Dream" organization in Mississippi.

Unless you are in the military you don't know what Obama does. Fortunately I have 2 sons in law that are. I speak to one every day. Did you know that Obama had stopped the Marines from rolling up their sleeves? Did you know that Obama had cut recruiting and retention bonuses?

Ditto the claim [Mr. - he is, after all, the President of the United States] Obama stopped the Marines from anything? Or that he personally cut recruiting and retention bonuses? Presidential Schedule for Friday
July 17, 2009 - 13:40 ET by celatorFor those who think that Obama doesn't
put in a full day's work, here his Friday July 17 schedule made
public this morning.
8:00 am Sign Executive Order
mandating GM install square wheels on all cars. Slower cars save
energy and square wheels allow quicker stops.
8:15 am Mandate all intermittent
windshield wipers be corrected by Sept 1. We can't be having
windshield wipers that work right only some of the time. Would
improve car safety. I have my redesign ready.
8:30 am Send American Medical
Association my personally redesigned procedure for patient
intubation. Raum says current method is invasive. Demand
implementation by next Friday in all hospitals.
8:45 am Complete my redesign of
pacemakers. Make sure design includes solar panel patient wears on
forehead to power pacemaker. Show how depleted pacemaker batteries
bad for landfills.
9:00 am Practice saying “Yes,
mam.” “No, mam” for times when Michelle comes in Oval Office
yelling at me.
9:30 am Send Pope Benedict my
redesign for his Vatican Office. Explain to him how Christian
religious symbols could be offensive to atheists and Muslims around
the world. Ask Pope where he buys those jazzy pointy hats. Would
look great on me when I read teleprompter.
10:00 am Practice fake Cajun
accent for upcoming trip to New Orleans to bash Bush.
11.00 am Complete my redesign of
personal checks for Bank of America customers. I own the bank, I can
do what I want.
11:30 am Sneak into closet and
smoke big old fat Churchill cigar.
12 noon Have lunch with teleprompters.
Tell them what a great job they are doing for the country. Their
morale seems low lately.
1:00 pm Visit Walter Reed to see
teleprompter who fainted at press conference. Bring card and
flowers. Avoid veteran patients.
2:00 pm Complete redesign of
Grand Canyon National Park. Too many sharp rocks there now. Remember
to tell press I am using stimulus bill money for reconstruction
(create jobs, etc.).
3:00 pm Call CEO of Coca Cola to
let him know I've reformulated their recipe for Coke. Tell him I
expect my new formulation to be in stores by Sept 1.
3:30 pm Call NYT to let them
know I'm almost done with my redesign of their type fonts. Should be
done next Tuesday. Tell publisher I expect them to use my redesign by
Aug 1.
4:00 pm. Practice Pas de Deux
ballet steps with Raum. I'm getting better at this. I expect lead
role in this year's Swan Lake White House presentation.
5:00 pm dinner with family.
7:00 pm Sneak another cigar.

Re Major Cook Case
July 17, 2009 - 14:25 ET by slickwillie2001Re the sudden retraction of Major Cook's deployment orders, this may have something to do with it:
Two Generals Join Cook Case on Obama Citizenship - Just Before It Was Dismissed: http://confederateyankee.mu.nu
"A controversial suit brought by a U.S. Army reservist has been joined by a retired Army two-star general and an active reserve Air Force lieutenant colonel. Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook filed the suit July 8 in federal court here asking for conscientious objector status and a preliminary injunction based upon his belief that President Barack Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States and is therefore ineligible to serve as president of the United States and commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces."
This suggests that someone panicked when it appeared that the case might grow to incorporate more plaintiffs, and for that reason his orders were retracted.

Not sure what to think
July 17, 2009 - 21:24 ET by general companyAbout the fact that it seems we will for now on loose another American Icon weekly. Folks that had influence on our culture and heritage. In many ways this says a lot of things about America, most of these folks started off just like you and I did. Will we kill the success and opertunity that has always been avalible in the USA? Or just let the Goverment decide the worthy?

July 17, 2009 - 20:27 ET by R D HelmAre we NB members not to be trusted with such a potentially explosive topic as Walter Cronkite?

RIP
July 17, 2009 - 20:54 ET by UnsaneHe said things I didn't agree with from time to time, but he was an American legend.
Scarily enough, I can remember when he retired. When he did, I was considerably younger. Well, a lot younger.
RIP, Walter.

Re Cronkite
July 17, 2009 - 21:22 ET by slickwillie2001So I have to ask, does every competent TV network have 'packages' ready to go on every significant celebrity over 50 or so? Kind of a thankless job to be in the 'spec-obit package staff' isn't it? You could work there for years and never have any of your work actually used.
They must. Fox breaks in
July 17, 2009 - 21:40 ET by GregEThey must. Fox breaks in (as the others did) and they're showing Cronkite clips and audio as if they've had it queued up.

July 17, 2009 - 21:55 ET by ChaitealoverSometimes there are whole departments devoted to being prepared for a well-known person's death. It would be a waste of time to have to dig out all that information when you could have it ready to read. I suspect they don't wait until a celebrity is over 50, either. Sooner or later everyone going to die, no matter how celebrated they may be.

One can see things in a bill, enough to vote AGAINST without reading the entire thing, but if voting FOR it, they best be knowing exactly what it is they are voting for, as most all of their crap affects our freedoms!!

Walpin Suing
July 17, 2009 - 21:57 ET by slickwillie2001Fired Americorps I-G Gerald Walpin suing government:
[quote] The suit claims that "Mr. Walpin was unlawfully removed and transferred from his position as Inspector General precisely because he had performed his responsibilities in an effective manner, supporting his career staff in their objective findings of wrongdoing, based on their audits and investigations, the truth of which those who sought to remove him did not want published.
"Mr. Walpin's unlawful removal and transfer to administrative leave, and his imminent, unlawful and procedurally-defective termination, are clearly contrary to the statutory command of the Inspector General Reform Act of 2008, and constitutes violations of law .... Mr. Walpin has suffered and continues to suffer very real reputational, vocational and economic injuries as a result [of the firiing], from the obvious loss of his post and the associated income and health insurance, to having his mental faculties questioned with not-so-subtle, and completely unfounded, suggestions of senility." [endquote]

In Memory of Mary Jo...
Shortly after leaving a party on Chappaquiddick Island, Senator Edward
"Ted" Kennedy of Massachusetts drives an Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge
into a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his
passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The senator did not
report the fatal car accident for 10 hours."

@slickwillie2001:
July 24, 2009 - 11:22 ET by j. frank wilsonAs the US Army explained, Maj. Cook's orders were changed because when he filed his unnecessary lawsuit they understood that he had changed his mind about serving in Afghanistan.
Maj. Cook volunteered. Therefore he could change his mind.
All he had to do was notify the Army of that decision. No need for a lawsuit.
Of course, there is the obvious question: Did he ever intend to actually serve in Afghanistan? Or is this a "set-up" lawsuit?
And did another soldier get very short notice that he or she was being sent overseas in Maj. Cook's place?
