For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama and Company take over another industry?
The Senate struck a historic blow against smoking in America Thursday, voting overwhelmingly to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in the cigarettes that kill nearly a half-million people a year, to drastically curtail ads that glorify tobacco and to ban flavored products aimed at spreading the habit to young people...The legislation, one of the most dramatic anti-smoking initiatives since the surgeon general's report, would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the content, marketing and advertising of cigarettes and other tobacco products.
Is this good news, or another link in Obama's perpetually growing socialist chain? Is there ANYTHING these folks CAN'T take over or regulate if THEY believe it's in OUR best interest?

It won't be 'no healthcare'
June 12, 2009 - 11:10 ET by KJ_sezYou won't be denied health care under the Obamination Plan if you're overweight or a smoker; you'll be forced to pay more money for it. You won't have the option of not having coverage, opting out, or going to another provider; any extra amount charged that you refuse to pay will be added to one of your existing tax bills - income or property in all likelihood. Or they'll just attach your bank account or wages, since they control the banks, and the Fourth Ammendment be damned.
How ironic that, after freeing so many around the world over so many years, we enslave ourselves for the cost of a doctor's visit.
$600 BILLION in new taxes for health care...

Unhealthy, yes.
June 12, 2009 - 22:11 ET by GregEUnhealthy, yes. Disgusting? Everyone's entitled to their opinion of course, but I personally don't view it with that descriptive.
But aside from that, tobacco is kind of where all of this over-the-top began (I think, but I wasn't paying attention to much before those years). It was said the excess taxes on tobacco would lead to taxes on other things deemed "bad for you" later. People said nahhh, that won't happen.
Make no mistake, our founders were wise. Even though THEY were not interested in government running things, they knew that THEY would not be around forever and would be replaced with new folks for years to come. They knew government had no business in certain things....MOST things.
So here we are, the FDA is going to regulate the crap out of tobacco. And government crapola healthcare is in the cards. We let the government control healthcare, and passing gas will be FDA regulated in the name of bringing down healthcare costs.
Trick question--
June 12, 2009 - 08:50 ET by misterbillIt is good because of the harmful effects of smoking, tobacco, etc.
Bad because it is the use of government power to force people to conform to standards that abrogate the free choice of Americans.
Double bad because it plays into the hands of the new administration's efforts to socialize the country. In other words, those of us who may be happy that the government is forcing people to avoid substances that are dangerous, may not see the man behind the curtain pulling the strings of a society of marionettes. Whats next??==I nominate sugar.
I hate smoking--I wish everyone, (particularly, my family), would stop risking their lives and stinking up my world. But I value their freedom of choice highly and I see this bill as another step in the subjugation of the American populace.

June 12, 2009 - 10:36 ET by slickwillie2001Read a couple of articles on this today, outrageous. This is a clear-cut case of political corruption. What I don't know is the Americorps IG employment status; is he an 'at-leisure' employee or a regular civil servant? The articles don't mention this. If he is a regular civil servant, it looks like he could sue for unwarranted dismissal (if his firing goes through) and should win easily. He might also find refuge in whistle-blower protection laws.
The hotair article also has some discussion of M'chell's new 'responsibilities' in the White House re hiring and firing. I guess she's done with the garden and needs a little more to keep her busy.

Left-think
June 12, 2009 - 09:15 ET by AJBI read with great interest how much money this will save the health care industry once they abolish the evil tobacco. But, it seems to me smokers live shorter lives and the profit from their health insurance and life insurance from living shorter lives will not disappear. So, one effect will be higher insurance costs all around. And, those people will eventually die of something, right? Who's to say that won't then compound the cost of medical treatment? So, another well intended plan by Big Brother actually will backfire on them yet again. Pity.
OK, smoking companies, here's what you're going to do.
June 12, 2009 - 09:16 ET by nolotrippenOK, smoking companies, here's what you're going to do.
Close shop. Today. Bye-Bye cigarette taxes. Bye-Bye jobs. Bye-Bye eternal whipping boy status. The government strangles you with one hand (endless regulations) and picks your pocket with the other (taxes, taxes, and more taxes, most of it passed on to smokers).
So, go away. And don't be surprised if the goverment suddenly finds it can't live without you and runs after you pleading for you to come back.
Like your idea!
June 12, 2009 - 09:43 ET by Red JeepBut I suppose if that happened the government would be forced to take over that business and produce U.S. Smokes. Then they would get all the profit. Charge a buck a cig. Make it illegal to possess any cigarettes not made by the U. S. government.
I do wish everyone would quit just to starve a revenue stream to the government which would force the government to then turn around and raise taxes on everyone which might create the "final straw" for a tax revolt.

I'm glad to hear Pvt. Blythe survived the War. Smoking
June 12, 2009 - 11:13 ET by ricklailSeveral years ago the state of NC designated a few prisons to be made smoke free. That include inmates and staff. The director sent a memo the other day that all prisons will go tobacco free on 8-1-09. I quit smoking my pipe 2-1/2 years ago after a collapsed lung so it doesn't bother me. But there are a lot of folks around here up in arms. In a way they are killing their golden goose.
Tobacco products bring in about $90,000 a year in sales in the canteens here. The profits from the canteen sales went to buy recreation items and TVs. Gov Dumpling took some of that money a few weeks ago to pay the state's bills. So if they don't have the funds in "welfare"-that's what the fund is called-then they are just going to get it from the taxpayers. Because tobacco sales will be way down then the taxes on it that they plan on funding health care with in this state will be down too. So in order to pay all this spending they will be coming back to us taxpayers for more.

Why release detainee photos? Rush connects the dots...
June 12, 2009 - 12:00 ET by TailgunnerNow Congressional Democrats are trying to give Obama cover by mandating the release of these inflammatory photos.
However, Obama has always had the final say on their release. So why would he not classify them and/or issue an executive order sealing them?
Here's why; Obama knows it will set the entire Muslim world on fire. There will be riots, killings and political instability.
Each detainee in these photos will be immediately hailed as a martyr. You want to talk about 'recruiting tools'?
There will be universal calls for the deaths of American infidels. But since they're hard to find in most of the Middle East, Muslims will have to settle for:
Israel.
Israel, to say the least, isn't on Obama's Christmas list.
What better way for Obama to break Netanyahu than to incite another intifada against Israel?
Widespread suicide bombings: Check.
Mass rocket attacks: Check.
Kidnapping and massacres? Check.
Netanyahu would be forced to lick Obama's boots in return for his influence with Islamist leaders...and to make concessions to date he has vigorously resisted.
Netanyahu is already facing US opposition to the inevitable need to strike Iran to prevent their gaining a nuclear weapon.
If Israel does this, they will remain independent...but that's not in Obama's plan.
Obama wants Israel to be at his mercy through Iran's possession of nuclear weapons.
Obama must know this scheme will cost many lives. Yet there is no indication Obama will stop the release of these photos.
'Evil' is an often overused word. But the chill I felt when I realized the horrendous potential of this plan can only be summed up by evil.
There is a reckless, cynical, linear progression to complete tyranny in the Obama administration.

Tobacco Act a revenue Generator...
June 12, 2009 - 13:30 ET by retroconThis tobacco act will be a revenue generator for the government. Taxes on cigarettes are critical to some programs. So, how do you get people to buy more of a product wtih an addictive compound in it? Reduce the amount of addictive compound per unit. I'm sure that the tax per pack is not going to go down.
Yes, cut the nicotine in half, and addicted people (most of the last remaining smokers), will buy twice as much to get their fix.
It happen when they put filters on, went to "lites," etc.

That is exactly what is going to happen.
Instead of outright outlawing cigarettes they are going to do exactly what you say they are.

June 12, 2009 - 15:41 ET by JIMMY1660but to help the kids, i would support "all tobacco sales should be made illegal"-for the good of the kids. however, once we do that, those greedy DC elites should be jailed for spending such tax dollars and promoting the sales, to enrich the tax coffers. the DC elites did not care where the money came from, just put it into my sleazy hands/ they were as guilty as the Tobacco Companies.

June 12, 2009 - 19:33 ET by jaywlBOH is giving MZ Walsh of Salon fits at this time. Another segment coming up, tune now, its great.
Later: Don't know who saw it but this Walsh didn't give an inch. She didn't want to answer Bill's question about a fetus having any rights at all, but eventually said NO. Amazing that these people think it is all right for a viable human being to die because the mother did not want the child to be adopted!, or she couldn't go out, and further lame excuses this baby killer Tiller accepted as a legal basis for the murder. O'Reilly laid the foundation proving those reasons were used. Walsh wound up saying O'Reilly had blood on his hands and other rather stupid, irrational accusations. Pitiful people they are.

June 12, 2009 - 23:13 ET by BDI watched and wondered at what point Walsh would impute rights to the baby.
Does it have to be totally exterior to the mother and breathing on its own before she would impute rights?
Does it have to be able to feed itself?
Another thing I find objectionable is the extremely clinical use of the term "Fetus" to describe the baby even as it is in the process of being born.

June 12, 2009 - 19:49 ET by slickwillie2001The Doofus appears to have stepped in it again on the four Uighers being shipped to Bermuda. I can't figure out if this is just more of his hatred of the British coming out, or simple incompetence:

"The British Government responded with ill-disguised fury tonight to the news that four Chinese Uighurs freed from Guantanamo Bay had been flown for resettlement on the Atlantic tourist paradise of Bermuda."
So what will the British do with them? Turn them over to the Chinese? Bounce them back to Cuba? Give them one-way tickets to D.C. and put them on the plane?

I heard about this...plus a few days ago, maybe yesterday, I can't keep up anymore, I heard Hillary made the blunder with this to begin with and the Brits were furious with her and the US for not consulting them at all first.
I haven't looked it up yet, but your post reminded me of this...although it was more than four when I heard it, it was something like 17...unless I have something messed up, which very well could be.

June 12, 2009 - 22:11 ET by ricklailI am not much of a hockey fan but I did watch the 3rd period of the Pens-Red Wing match. WOW. Congrats to the Pens. It was exciting. If I heard right the Pens are the first team since the 79 Pirates to win a game 7 on the road in any sport to win a championship. "Papa" was the MVP of the series.
The city of Pittsburgh can show off the Stanley Cup right next to the Vince Lobardi Throphy.
The city of Detroit had the Stanley Cup. But it will be until the 12ht of never before they can display the Lobardi.
