For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: the Internet is running out of bandwidth!
Internet users face regular "brownouts" that will freeze their computers as capacity runs out in cyberspace, according to research to be published later this year. Experts predict that consumer demand, already growing at 60 percent a year, will start to exceed supply as early as 2010 because of more people working online and the soaring popularity of bandwidth-hungry Web sites such as YouTube and services such as the BBC's iPlayer. It will initially lead to computers being disrupted and going offline for several minutes at a time. Beginning in 2012, however, PCs and laptops are likely to operate at a much reduced speed, rendering the Internet an "unreliable toy."

April 30, 2009 - 10:19 ET by QueenMumI for one am sick to death of animated pop-ups. Can't we just criminalize those? Seriously. Is there any reason YouTube et al can't be required to cull their content periodically? IMO there are plenty of things individual websites could do to "clean up" the Internet environment. As is often the case, we take things for granted until there's a problem. But I'm no I.T. expert.

Secondly....HHS is about to reverse the Concious Clause (right, no one's aware of this because it hasn't been reported on...go figure), which will essentially force health care providers to perform abortions, regardless of their own personal views on the matter. The swine flu "panic" serves as perfect top cover for this stealth maneuver, which would surely outrage half the population if reported on. (Note the main-stream usage of "extremist" for those of us who are anti-abortion by the advocates of "women's health", um abortion).

April 30, 2009 - 11:50 ET by BruzillaI'm not putting any faith into anything that anyone is saying about this flu outbreak. There are too many interests at work. Last night, a doc from WHO claimed there were only seven "confirmed" deaths, "confirmed" meaning the WHO had received blood/tissues samples, analyzed them, and made the call. With this logic, the current death toll could be dozens of times higher than what the WHO has confirmed using their stringent data.
Me, I would rather believe the statements of the docs in Mexico, who are seeing this disease first hand and everyday, than take the word of some the WHO, is seems to be more concerned with supporting exonomic issues that protecting global health.

Re Chrysler
April 30, 2009 - 11:12 ET by slickwillie2001News on Chrysler is as good as we can expect, bondholders have rejected the Bamster's bad deal and are forcing a traditional bankruptcy court proceeding. That way the investors come first, instead of a sloppy second after the UAW as in the Bamster's stinker of a deal. I hope this is a done deal and the Doofus doesn't try to bulldoze his way into the deal.
A real slap in the face to the Doofus; too bad (as I understand it) that can't also be done at GM because their bonds are unsecured vs Chrysler's secured. Can anyone confirm?
Re Chrysler
April 30, 2009 - 11:26 ET by slickwillie2001Watching the Bamster's speech on Chrysler and GM right now. It's so full of BS that it's not clear to me whether he is going to allow the traditional bankruptcy to go through or not. Either way he will pose it as a great victory for himself. He looks angry, so I take that possibly as a sign of personal defeat.
He is attacking the bondholders as 'investors' and 'speculators' for not accepting his deal and 'making sacrifices' as the other stakeholders have. What he is not telling us is that he dictated the terms of the 'sacrifices' that the unions made, and those sacrifices were paltry compared to what he wanted of the bondholders.
Can he interfere with the bankruptcy court and judge? Is that legal? If not can he get away with it anyway?

April 30, 2009 - 11:47 ET by winston smithSounds like "experts" are trying to convince us that there's no other choice but to move to a "tiered" pricing scheme -- otherwise the internet will just come to a complete halt. Hey, it worked for Al Gore and his Earth In The Balance/ Global Warming scare stories, so maybe the same can work for the ISPs! The seas are rising so let's blame businesses and industy and create a confiscatory tax scheme designed to stifle business activity and investment.
And today it's, 'We're running out of bandwith, so it's time to moved to a tiered pricing structure.' There's been a lot of talk and some flatout paranoia about the ISPs wanting to go to a "tiered" pricing structure on internet accounts, you know, like your cable bill: Silver Plan, Gold Plan, Platinum Plan. In other words, no more pay-one-price. You want max bandwidth, you want quality interent, quality search engines, etc? You pay a higher monthly fee, plain and simple.
"Net Neutrality", as it's called, stands in opposition to this idea. Some feel that by breaking the interent into "tiers", you'll be preventing the "poor" and those with low finances from getting equal access to the net as those with the financial resources. So I guess we'll very soon be hearing that 'the debate is over, there's no more bandwith' we must immediately move to a multiple pricing scheme.
Or, it's altogether possible that if we are indeed running out of bandwith as the experts say, that new infrastructure will need to be built and the interent will have to move to a multiple pricing scheme in order to help finance it.

I think people use IE
April 30, 2009 - 14:14 ET by StewMcKinI think people use IE because it comes pre-installed on all PCs running Windows. In the business environment PCs are normally locked up by the system admin, so the option of downloading an alternative browser doesn't exist without the admin unlocking each individual computer (they don't like to do that ever, even if it helps). I pointed out Congress was violating the Constitution in taxing a specific group;
And wanted to know my Congressmen's position. One response is from a Dem congressman. The second is from a Rep Senator.
Want to guess which is which?
Response 1: I voted in favor of H.R. 1586 to impose a 90% tax on bonuses for recipients of TARP
funds in excess of $5 billion, and for employees of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The additional tax is only imposed on employees who earn more than $250,000 a year.
I do not believe that these bonuses should be paid at the taxpayer's expense.
Response 2: While I share the concerns of many Americans about AIG's decision to award bonuses,
I believe the passage of a punitive tax law could set a far more dangerous precedent
of allowing the government to use the tax code to target what it considers to be an undesirable group.
