Sunday Sports Open Thread

It's Opening Day for MLB! Make your division winner predictions now so that we can make fun of you later. :-)

NBA heading towards playoffs: can Boston or Orlando stop LeBron from facing the Lakers in the finals?

NHL heading towards playoffs: Boston and San Jose pulling away. Are they heading towards a faceoff for the cup?

Any final thoughts about yesterday's college b-ball games?

Anything else?

This is the match up I had hoped for.  (Not the Chariman Mao-Bama type hope.)

I was impressed with

I was impressed with Michigan St. last night. No Big East teams in the finals, quite a shock.

My Penguins are still trying to seal a playoff spot, going 6-1-3 in their past 10 games.

Baseball season begins today, and Pittsburgh is all abuzz. And when I mean "abuzz" I actually mean "extreme disinterest". After all, the predicted worst team in baseball lost to a frigging community college last week. 70 wins will be a dream this season. Hell, the over/under is 69.5.

The Pirates will be put out

The Pirates will be put out of their misery by the end of April-mid May at the lastest.

Semper suprene nitens

Yep.

At any rate, baseball season in the Burgh ends at the end of July, when Steelers training camp begins.

Good luck tomorrow night with your Heels, Rickster! They bad!

I still have those great

I still have those great memories of "The Gunner" Bob Prince on KDKA calling the games when the Pirates were great.

See we can agree

Finally someone agrees with me. everytime I think of Pirate games I always think of Hot days at PNC Park and melted ice cream sandwiches.

MLB-- the Yanks have once again spent their way into the odds-on favorite spot, the Padres are absymal.

NBA -- go Celtics!  with KG healthy they can repeat

NHL -- the playoffs are soo long that anything can happen, too much time for injuries to occur and effect the outcome

Your wife is smarter than mine. My wife pulls for NC State.

GO HEELS

My oldest son is deaf. When he was about 4 he saw a hockey game on TV and ask me what it was. Not knowing the sign for hockey I told him in sign language it was skate fighting. Now his is 32 and he still uses skate fighting when referring to hockey.

Rick, the story about your son's term for hockey would be funny if it wasn't so accurate!

The Twins will go all the way and win the World Series.  I could very easily be wrong if they don't get healed up, but as a Twins fan, I've been right twice in the last 30 years I've made that prediction, which gives me a higher accuracy rate than Keith Olbermann.

I'm going out on a shaky limb but I am going to predict the Yankees don't even make the playoffs. Sure they have a lot of talent but with the talent comes some big egos. I also predict that some of the lower revenue teams are going to have to shed some of their high priced players due to this economic crisis. So the rich are going to get richer.

Have you heard about the price of Yankee tickets? If I heard right the average ticket is up to $72 from last seasons $46.

Semper suprene nitens

Not to be a d***...

but have you ever heard the price of a Yankee? You don't buy the best team in baseball without charging a first born child for tickets.

Sportage and Opening Day...

Ladies and gents, it is THAT TIME OF YEAR again - the time when God smiles upon the earth, stops most of the rain and cold weather, and causes the great and wonderful flower of baseball to bloom in the great national cathedrals of Wrigley, Comisky, and Fenway. That's right, it's baseball season. It's been a long winter, but finally we can rejoice.

The division winners shall be:

The Noo Yawk Mets. The Phillies and Braves are going to be very strong in this, the best division in baseball; but it won't be enough. If the Mets don't have a catastrophic wave of injuries to their pitching staff, there will be no stopping them. The Phillies will take the wildcard, though...look for a first-round playoff matchup that will rival Bloodsport.

The Central will be won by George Will's favorite lovable (and perennial) losers, The Cubbies. They win by default, because no other team will be able to find their collective posterior with both hands.

I have no idea who is going to win the West. Dodgers will probably have a good shot, but I don't know if they can finish. This will be the division to make me look stupid.

And now to the baseball league with crippled hitters:

The AL East will be won in a hard fight, and I think the Sox are going to win it. The Yankees are going to be playing some pissed-off baseball, though...and after $450 million or so on key players, they had better contend. Even Jeter, the god of New York, could be in danger if they're in third place - Steinbrenner is on a mission. I expect the Bombers to take the wildcard if they don't win the division, though...

The Twins will be competing with a where-the-heck-did-they-come-from Kansas City Royals. That's right, ladies, the hapless Royals will be contending for the division this year - you heard it here first. Or, possibly, they will suck harder than a Dyson, and you'll all think I'm an idiot.

I'm gonna do a roulette pick with the AL West, since I have no clue on this division either. I have this timer going off in the back of my head that says Oakland hasn't been good for a few years, it's about time that they show up to play again. So here's to the Moneyballers - I pick Oakland to win the division in a squeaker.

Who actually watches the NBA?

The only thing that can stop the Bruins is...the Capitals. I don't know if they can pull it off, but the Caps are gonna be tough to beat...
