For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: if we don't pass porkulus, we're doomed forever?
President Barack Obama warned on Thursday that failure to act on an economic recovery package could plunge the nation into a long-lasting recession that might prove irreversible, a fresh call to a recalcitrant Congress to move quickly.
Wait a minute: I thought we already are in the worst recession since World War II, and we need porkulus to get us out of it? Now it appears we need government to PREVENT US from going into a serious recession? Why the change in tack? Beyond this, we might NEVER come OUT of this recession unless government borrows trillions of dollars it doesn't have to inefficiently spend it now? If this is a cure for financial woes, why don't struggling Americans do the same thing?
With polls showing Americans losing interest in porkulus, will Obama's fearmongering work?

Obama on his fear-mongering and inability to defend his rhetoric in the face of economic realities. When Pres. Now when our Dear Leader can't seem to make up his mind about the country's economy, the MsM is willing to give him plenty of time to make a course correction. I guess it's more important to be thoughtful than decisive.

February 5, 2009 - 11:07 ET by RD Kingporkulus will do just the opposite and create a failing job market and economy for at least a decade or more. The real shame of this is that the economy that obama, acorn and the CRA has already created has put me out of work since May 2006, drained my life savings and destroyed my retirement account. So even if the recovery would come as early as next year he has already destroyed any plans I might have had for retirement in the next few years. If he is allowed to spin us from his recession into his depression then I'll never have the chance to recoup my losses. I know I’m not alone in this there are millions out there in the same boat I am and some even worse off, but the main point is that we have worked hard all of our lives and earned what we have and now we need work/jobs not welfare, increased taxes and more job losses. obama should be in prison not using federal force to steal from anyone and everyone he can find that has a dime just to pay back and give it to his lowlife friends and voters.

Loss for words...almost
February 5, 2009 - 11:16 ET by klchadwickWhen it comes to the Great Spending Bill of '09, I am almost at a loss for words. Actually, I am at a loss for finding logic in the actions proposed by the Dynamic Trio (Obama, Pelosi, Reid) aka, the Three Stooges.
I was at a lecture yesterday given by the head of the Department of Economics of Florida State University. He stated that if an increase in government spending was the correct solution to bring about the end of the recession, why are we even in a recession in the first place? After all, like him or not, disagree with him or not, but Bush and the Republicans did in fact increase government spending over the last 8 years...of course they cut taxes as well, but we still ended up in a slump.
The question that has me chomping at the bit is this: Even though we may not agree with Obama's ideas, stances and philosophies, the man is surely not stupid. Also, I am almost equally sure that he economic advisor are not below the 100 mark on the IQ range. Taking these into account, why is it that even hough it has been proven time and time again (and even laid out in nice and easy terms in Milton Friedman's essay from 2000 http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2009/02/01/debunking-myth-government-spending-stimulates-economy ) do these people think that pumping money into the system is going to somehow miraculously bring an end to this economic downturn?
Why do they insist that overloading the system with cash is going to bring an end to these problems when surely they know that this action will bring about problems of it's own. Namely inflation, to much money chasing too few goods and services. And won't this bring about it's own recession?
The way that I'm seeing this is:
1) Pump more money into the system through the government at the cost of tax payers
2) When the recession nds in life cycle in a natural fashion, credit Obama and his wonderful "stimulus plan".
3) When said recession ends, use the crisis of inflation, debt and defecit to scare the population and thereby justify raising taxes.
4) Obama runs for re-election as he guy that ended the recession, fixed inflation AND magically erased debt and defecit.
5) In the end, the government wons the banks, owns the auto industry, funs the financial sector, determines how much money one can make AND taxes success. Oh and also tells us when we can and cant make profits.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!!!!!
re: Natural end to the recession
February 5, 2009 - 11:19 ET by BensonIt will not occur within the next two years if this bill passes. It will only stretch this crisis out longer making this bill almost as big a political mistake as it is an economic mistake.

February 5, 2009 - 11:18 ET by CaringwhiteguyHere's a great story idea for some enterprising MSM'er. Or, if it's not a story idea it's at least worthy of a question.
Let's see how Harry Reid's (D-NV) constituents, the hard working members of the hospitality unions that bankroll him, like the idea of Wells Fargo being strong-armed into not holding a big event for it's employees in Las Vegas.
Who among them has the "cajones" (see Mark Finkelstein on Norah O'Donnell 1/21/09) to research the story or ask Reid the question?

The economy is based on
February 5, 2009 - 11:27 ET by bradbenj5952The economy is based on people having money to purchase goods and services as well as companies having capital to provide the goods and services that generate cash flow which in turn creates jobs. So if you simply just cut all tax rates in half then both citizens and companies will have more money to grow the economy. Simple. What this formula does not do is provide O & Co. with cash to buy votes. What a disgusting state for our nation to be in.
I hope Americans will NOT be suckered into this. But, alas, I fear that is a feeble hope because it was Americans that were suckered into voting this guy in office in the first place.

O's fear-mongering isn't
February 5, 2009 - 11:31 ET by bigtimerO's fear-mongering isn't working according to the polls, that is the exact reason Reid says this bill will be done by tonight if possible, less than a week on a 1.3 trillion dollar bill (with interest) for that very reason, the American people are hearing what crap is in this bill, they also know that we are paying for this and will for years to come, the repubs had better get their message out every chance they get loud and clear regarding all this BS...because if this happens and it goes to conference, we can kiss our capitalist butts good-bye with what all they will get put into this bill and we can't stop it, neither can the repubs, although they do have to pass it one more time once this is done, so we shall see what all happens, very soon.
O is having a national fire-side type of chat with all of us peons Monday night according to Drudge...so he is working arm in arm with Reid, Pelosi and some RINOs to be so arrogantly sure this is a done deal to have this happen on Monday night.

Did someone say, "National Emergency" ?
February 5, 2009 - 12:03 ET by MikeLIFor all of his speeches on the subject, we have yet to hear, in a sincere way, from our President, that we are in a GENUINE National Emergency.
He's been talking, in various forums about this, the proof is all around us, everywhere, but where are the actual, SINCERE words from our President ?
The socalled Stimulus Bill, presented originally by the House, is a Politician's, veritble, "laundry list" of postponed Clinton Era, Democratic entitlements, wrapped tightly in lots of sweety fructose, to make it palatable to consume, but we don't seem to want to take it.
We are assaulted in the Media, every day, with evidence of our country's, and the World's, economic decline, so we know it's raining, but we don't seem to "get it".
It's not that we don't "get it", it's that our Leaders don't get it.
They are letting us down. And this crosses "party lines".
Congress isn't only, suffering from, what some say, is a "20% approval rating". It's suffering from a paralysis of Denial, that's slowly eating away at our country's moral tissue, and morale.
Until such a time, one among them, rises up, and captivates our GENUINE need for repair, we are going to be a rudder-less boat, going in circles.

I've been watching for that one too. If he does declare it, he can then implement Presidential Directive 51 (signed last year), and suspend all Constitutional safeguards and declare Martial Law on the citizens of the United States.
Would Obama sink that low to implement his socialist agenda? Of course he would.

February 5, 2009 - 12:02 ET by bassndudeThis bill will do very little in the way of stimulus. The infrastructure they speak of is roads and bridges. It takes 6 to 8 years to spend the money to build one. No quick fix there. The tax cuts they are talking about will not have much effect in 09, but might stimulate some in 2010, depending on the economy.Less than 100 billion will reach the public in 2010. With 300 million people, "that aint much stimulating." If people save it, it will do nada. His Energy Efficiency Retrofitting and Environmental Spending is a joke. Most of that money will be spent in 2 years. The economy will still be on the rocks. The business tax cut will work untill 2010, when it goes back up. Businesses will keep that money in the bank. It will not be used for expansion. Most of the stimulus goes to the programs for the unemployed in bennies, and an increase in food stamps and health care programs for the poor. As far a creating jobs? No. Not one new job. Creating a population dependent on goverment hand outs? Yep. A lot of that.

In other words, their conjob was not morally wrong because they were stealing from criminals, people who supposedly got their money illicitedly.
In this case based on the recipients of Nancy Pelosi's idea of stimulus is to steal money from private investors via borrowing that trillion dollars using low interest bonds. Any moron who buys US bonds at this point will loose 25% or more of their principal when interest rates inevitably go up. You see Pelosi is running a sting on the private investors taking their money to give to her constituents and buy more constituents (votes) so she and her cronies can stay in power. This conjob is not simply about borrowing money for useless liberal boondoggles, it about a transfer of wealth. Who in their right minds believes the US will ever pay back the $10 trillion plus national debt???? Pelosi makes Madoff look like a rank amaetur.

February 5, 2009 - 12:41 ET by Jack BauerSo President Obama, speaking off the cuff, proclaims all King-like that executives are to have their salaries capped and that they must not be rewarded for failure..
Well Obama's the Chief Executive -- and he's already failing --
So let's start at the top. Cap and reduce HIS Salary!
By the way, under what article of the US Constitution does the President get the announce at a Press conference that private citizens in private companies can only earn what the President deems correct -- like some a flunky at the Court of King George 3??
That reminds me of something -- oh yeah, COMMUNISM 101
He should at least renounce
February 5, 2009 - 12:42 ET by ThisnThatHe should at least renounce the planned $100,000 white-house redecoration, if he has any sense of fair play and personal responsibility.

Jack, you have just identified the most dangerous thing...
February 5, 2009 - 12:45 ET by R D Helm...that Obama is currently doing.
Far more dangerous than even the "stimulus" bill.

Our clueless political leaders are about to drive us all over a cliff. The time to HITM is now-before we go over.
Hello Jack. King Obama, or
February 5, 2009 - 12:49 ET by bassndudeHello Jack. King Obama, or should I say, Comrad Obama? I hope this dont get done. Once something like that gets passed, they will limit the amount I can make, and everyone else. The boy sacking at the store will have a salary cap, and unable to take the tips. This is a really spooky guy up there. If we dont get some conservitives in congress and the senate, we may as well put the red star in the middle of our flag. This guy has to be stopped.

Communism 101 indeed
February 5, 2009 - 12:50 ET by bigtimerCommunism 101 indeed Jack!
Exactly what this is....
I have been more than infuriated, in fact I rarely use the term communism, but I already did today elsewhere, and that is exactly what is happening to this sweet country, incrementally for years as they can chip away, but now we are to the extreme, boiling point not far off.
Reid announced last night this would be done tonight, he must know the numbers...I pray he is wrong and people keep up the fight via calls ect., but what I saw witht he votes, he may be right, like I said earlier, Snowe and Collins must have been so swayed after he worked his magic on the two RINOs as they hadn't voted the way the did after meeting with him the day before.
Well if we are in fact
February 5, 2009 - 12:57 ET by taterWell if we are in fact sliding towards communism...I do have the solution, in my signature. It worked in Austria, Brazil, and Portugal.

Kooks
February 5, 2009 - 13:23 ET by GothampcIn this case it's not so bad. It woud be replacing one kook with another. It's the others we have to be concerned about.
That don't really bother
February 5, 2009 - 13:26 ET by ricklailThat don't really bother me. Her replacement is not going to Chief Justice. You just are replacing one far lefty for another. I don't know if they can find another one as far left as she is. What we need to do is pray for the health and safety of the good ones like Clarence Thomas.

Ahhh, yes we must now all
February 5, 2009 - 13:53 ET by DCC1Ahhh, yes we must now all stand together in the new era and denounce the politics of fear, wait a democrat said it? Ahhh, we must all stand together and believe every word that comes from the all-mighty-O's mouth, (disent will not be tolerated!)

Just read an article in
February 5, 2009 - 13:58 ET by DCC1Just read an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal an how the Dems are starting their attack ads against certain Republicans in the house that voted against their spending bill. Around here they are targeting Rep. Sensenbrener with commercials that say, "he voted against helping crumbling schools in Wisconsin".
This is such BS it isn't even funny! It is not enough that they have a huge majority and can pass anything they want even without moderate democrats, NO DISENT IS ALLOWED! They will target you for simply voting against a bill, and run ads in you district and pour all kinds of dirty money in to make you look bad. And these local Reps don't even have the ability to defend themselves.
Talk about the Politics of FEAR, you must now FEAR voting against anything the neo-marxists propose!

February 5, 2009 - 17:17 ET by Cool ArrowI'm of the opinion this country has so sold out to the Satan that we may get much more than 8 years.
I see absolutely no evidence this country will turn away from their plea "We need a king"
This can be blamed on Bush for far longer than you think.
How many terms did FDR get?
Cool A...maybe..."We need a king"
February 5, 2009 - 17:35 ET by vrwc13...but think of what happened to him!
Satan is no match for the King of Kings!

February 5, 2009 - 17:48 ET by Cool ArrowI serve the same King.
My point is that the generations before Daniel were responsible for Daniel's slavery.
I'll be surprised if we're all still here in 8 years. I think we're that close to His coming.
