January 26, 2009 - 11:17 ET by NorthCoasterToo bad Bill Ayers was in hiding before the election. He is an unrepentant, unapologetic terrorist. There's no need to parse words.
His comparison of himself to national leaders calling them terrorists and hmself just a man, is what I would expect him to say.

Her Speakerness is a poor excuse for a Catholic. How long before she and others like her are advocating a one-child policy (voluntary at first, of course)? The only Catholic teachings they respect are the "social justice" parts.
She has actually said that the question of "when life begins" should NOT be allowed to infringe on a woman's "right to choose."
For that alone she should be excommuncated, and I really wish she would be, along with Kerry. They should not be allowed to publicly flout the teachings of their Church and still call themselves "Catholic."

On to Pelosi, this stunningly stupid remark caught my eye just before I clicked over here. Even she probably doesn't know what she meant. Twisted logic doesn't begin to describe the idiocy here. My formula for stimulus is for the government to leave us alone. That and they do what my family is doing right now - downsizing the budget.

January 26, 2009 - 10:52 ET by Lord Erond"Two years ago at this podium, I urged spending restraint. I asked that billions of surplus funds be deposited in state savings. This struck me as a simple precaution against, as I described it, massive single-year cuts down the road, if and when we faced tougher times. You legislators agreed, so we can now meet our challenge in a stronger position.
And you understood the challenge is not just to think fast and change plans when the price of oil suddenly falls, affecting revenue by billions of dollars. The challenge is to follow a consistent plan despite inconsistent prices.
With prudence, you built our reserves – that was good planning. This national economic downturn that’s spread to the energy market – it found us prepared. And that’s more than many states can say about their financial situation."
-Sarah Palin, State of the State of Alaska speech

Contractions and expansions of the economy are natural and normal. The "law" of unintended consequences may prevail with this meddling (see Fannie and Fred for that "unintended consequence of social planning) because the exact amount of meddling to "right" the economy is an unknown quantity and all this falls into the "We have go to do something" category. It just looks like an excuse to loot the treasury for their pet ideological projects and for the politicians to look like they are doing something constructive.

What?
January 26, 2009 - 11:11 ET by NorthCoasterI saw this on Drudge and wondered what in the world these folks are thinking. This economic crisis is deepening and the Barry, Nancy, Harry triumvirate is fiddling. This stuff that makes up the so-called bailout is useless if all it does is advance the Liberal agenda.
Make the banks solvent and force them to extend reasonable credit to qualified business or the current recession will descend into depression. No planes or $1million renovations to offices until borrowers are able to access credit.
There are a number of companies in our area that have folded or restricted their business because the banks called in their notes or wouldn't roll over construction bonds. The banks won't make loans available so they loose income from existing business that would improve their bottom line.

When we were children, we used to play a game. Everyone would line up with their legs about 2 feet apart. Then one person would have to crawl through all the other kid's legs. As they were crawling through, the ones standing spanked the one crawling through.
I propose that at certain times of the year, members of Congress should be required to crawl through the legs of people that have lined up on the Washington Mall.
"family planning"
January 26, 2009 - 11:28 ET by anormWhen I was a probation officer I wasn't allowed to mention family planning (read birth control) at all, under any circumstances. It was consided to be racist. One "client" was 35, had 5 kids and her oldest was about to make her a grandmother. She wanted information for herself and her daughter and I wasn't allowed to discuss it with her AT ALL. The idea is that speaking to a "minority" about family planning is promoting genocide and is nothing more than another way to keep african-americans down. Of course, Nancy will get a pass. While I might be vilified for this, I agree with Nan on this one after seeing so many young women with 6 or 7 kids they couldn't afford to feed on their own. Dependent on food stamps and other gov programs to keep it going. If family planning included teaching good judgement and self respect, it might work.

Okay, let me understand this.
First, having an abortion stimulates the economy? Huh? Apparently, Nancy forgot about one key item of the economy. It's called people. You need people to produce and consume.
Second, Nancy asserts that all economist agree that you get a larger bang for your buck with food stamps and unemployment insurance than with tax cuts. The very first question in my mind (the one that the sycophantic George Stephanopolous does not ask) is who? Name me the economists (besides Paul Krugman who thinks government is the answer to everything) that think food stamps stimulate the economy.
Another question is can you name me a single example where food stamps and unemployment insurance actually stimulated the economy? I can't think of one.
This woman is absolutely insane and no one is calling her on it.

Isn't a perpetual positive population growth required for the successful funding of the Medicare/Universal Health Care and Social Security Ponzi--I mean social programs?
Isn't a growing economy supposed to supplied with more and more workers and more and more jobs as the timeline progresses into the future?
But somehow...by reducing human reproduction, government will fix the economy.
Very interesting indeed.

January 26, 2009 - 18:52 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveAnd to add insult to injury, Obama is all for imposing greater fuel efficiency requirements on the already foundering auto industry.
Reality check, Mr. Boy President: If the auto makers could make automobiles more fuel efficient they would...ALL their customers desperately want greater fuel efficiency. Who wouldn't want to buy a car that topped 50 MPG or more? The problem is the internal combustion engine...it has hit it's efficiency wall...for over 100 years engineers have been wringing every bit of efficiency out of internal combustion engines...most of the energy that is not harnessed is due to heat transfer. It doesn't matter what fuels you use, there will still be tremedous inefficiency due to the heat transfer through the enormous (and necessary) friction of the metal parts.
He says, "We must help them thrive by building the cars of tomorrow." (Back to your sinking ship analogy). Yeah, that's what's been holding the engineers back from designing more efficient engines...government wasn't "helping" them do it.
And Obama says it's necessary because our fossil fuel supplies are dwindling. "America will not be held hostage to dwindling resources," he said.
"The days of Washington dragging its heels are over. My administration will not deny facts. We will be guided by them." It's a fact, huh? Were's your source evidence to support your assertion Mr. President?
I just cannot believe the audacity of ignorance that emits from the people currently in power. Given time, I am certain Obama will surpass Jimmy Carter's ineptness at rational thought and reason.

Ms. Pelosi, maybe you should cut back on whatever prescription medication you're on. It's taking its toll on your brain. Haven't you heard the this country's demographic is aging, that Social Security is rapidly converging on bankruptcy, that we have a huge federal budget deficit that is due primarly to the mandatory spending (which is about 2x as much as military and the gap will continue to grow) for entitlement programs that are becoming a runaway truck due to the aging population?
What is needed is the exact opposite: Incentives for larger families, (brought on by a reduced usage of contraception). We are barely at replacement rate, and that just ain't gonna cut it in the near future. This country will be brought to its knees if something is not done to reverse this trend quickly, unless she has in mind extermination of the elderly.

Kristol
January 26, 2009 - 17:23 ET by GothampcBill Kristol must have lost whatever little sense he had left.
Unless this debate is sponsored by Fox News and moderated by Rick Warren, Kristol will lose.
This is how it will go:
Question to Bill: Why didn't Bush fly over to Abu Grahib and stop the torture that we all knew American soldiers were capable of?
Question to Matt: How do you get your hair so shiny?
Question to Bill: Why didn't Bush fly down to New Orleans and rescue those poor black people? Does he hate blacks?
Question to Matt: Did you enjoy working more with Julia Roberts or Gwynnie Paltrow?

Step Two: Invent new and interesting rationalizations for its exsistence.
Step Three: Call it economic stimulus. Because even Marty Feldstein is for that.
