For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: the bear that roared.

Stocks around the world greeted news of a proposed financial industry bailout in the United States with tremendous joy. Markets and bourses across the globe saw shares explode at a frenzied pace on astounding volume.

The big question: was Thursday the bottom, and this explosion the beginning of a new bull market? Or, was this just another rally in a bear market, and there are many other shoes to drop before the financial crisis is over?

It's nothing more than

It's nothing more than deodorant. The bailout solves none of the problems that created the "crisis" and in fact ensures they will stick around to bedevil us all again. Markets and bourses may be overjoyed, but the American taxpayer won't be when the balance for these bailouts comes due.

The Second Great Depression - Bush Repeats History

America's Great Depression

"When Hoover finally took over the White House, he followed his own advice, and made it an engine of interference, first pumping more credit into an already overheated economy and, then, when the bubble burst, doing everything in his power to organize government rescue operations."

Your knee-jerk response does not make the failed banks go away or the devestating negative effect these bailouts will have on the economy. The market is trying to correct itself and Bush is meddling, just like he did when he had tried to pump more credit into the economy to keep it afloat and helped cause the housing bubble.

Hmm also.........

Thanks for the links, although I would have eventually meanderd? over to Michelle's site, I might have missed that post.

The good news and the bad news for Obama.

A poll conducted with Stanford University, set out to determine why Obama is locked in a close race with McCain even as the political landscape seems to favor Democrats.

Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama

And the survey says:

The Good News:

"There are a lot fewer bigots than there were 50 years ago,

The Bad News:

but that doesn't mean there's only a few bigots,"

The Good News:

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama.

The Bad News:

Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that. Three in 10 of those Democrats who don't trust Obama's change-making credentials say they plan to vote for McCain.

the bailout includes buying American Assets, non performing ones

American homes, homes in America on American Soil, is what the US Govt. will end up "bailing out".

That is something every mexican, European, Asian, and Russian citizen wants to OWN.   A piece of America is in Great Demand all over the World.   It's overpriced Securities, non performing Houses that people can't afford....but desperately want.

Given that majority Scenario of acquired assests, I have confidence that this is NOT the END of the World as we financially know it.

Given time, the Government can make money and build the value on these assets . . . . Time that a Normal Investor would not have nor can they afford.

I'm just happy that someone in the Senate (McCain and company) saw it coming and tried (to no avail) to get the Democratic congress to do something about it.

I DO WANT to see some PROCECUTIONS of some CEO's....Raines and Johnson and Mudd do  NOT deserve to live in Luxury.

Now there is an Income producer for Money spent, then Re-coupment/Profit of MORE Money into the US Treasury, and a process for Rebuilding the Strategic Reserve.

After all, the only difference between a Salt dome with Millions of Barrels of Strategic Oil Reserves and ANWR Reserves, is "Access" . . . It's still an underground storage Tank.

The Republican Revolution will not be Televised

Wish I'd Seen That

Press is a flaming jackass-a few years ago he actually was suckered into believing the internet hoax story about an IQ study by the non-existent "Lovenstein Institute" was fact. Said hoax study claimed that Bush had a lower IQ than his 2004 "opponent".

The Government already

The Government already tried to make money and build the value on the assets, it was called Freddy and Fannie Mae and look what happend.

The fallacy here is that the government can "make money", it cannot. It can only take money and redistribute it. When you speak of government generating money, what that really means is the taxpayers.

The American assets and homes still can't be afforded, so this bailout, which protects those large companies as much as any homeowner as it keeps them afloat and rewards them for being inefficent, so people are still locked out from getting these homes. It helps "average" people not a whit.

As for CEO's, as long as they did nothing illegal, you can't prosecute them for screwing up. The constitution allows people to make mistakes. You can't lock up a CEO for failing to perform anymore than you can lock up The Maloof brothers because the Sacramento Kings didn't win the NBA title in 2002.

It's not the end of the world, but it continues the same screwed up process all over again instead of giving the finacial system a chance to crap out all the bad credit.

Give or take a few more years, and we'll be back to square one. *sigh*

Lunacy of prosecuting CEOs

If you have proof of criminal behavior then fine go after them but it is ultimately up to the boardmembers and the shareholders to clean house when a CEO is underperforming. If they fail to do so then it is their fault. Just being a bad CEO is not criminal. Ultimately the responsibility of any publicly traded corporation falls back on the shareholders and the board members. Investing is a risk and if you do not want to accept the consequences do not invest.

Hurricane Ike

This doesn't get much press, but after one week there are still over 1.4 million households (including my in-laws, who live 65 miles from the coast) without power, and a significant number of damaged, flooded or destroyed homes.

When our power, land line phone and cell phone service were restored mid-week, we were finally able to communicate with friends who said that, with the exception of the devastation on Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula, there was very little media coverage of the overall impact.

Mom

It is going to take time. The power distibution system wasn't built in a week. My son is going to begin hauling power poles from here in eastern NC to Texas next week. His boss told him he probably would make 2 trips a week for the next 3-4 weeks.

In 1989 I went through the damage from Hugo. We were 35 miles northwest of Charlotte. There were some folks in the area that didn't get their power back for 4 weeks after the storm. I feel for them but I know how hard it is to rebuild the electrical transmission system.  I worked for the power company at one time. Man were we glad to see those trucks roll in from Alabama Power.

You know the media is not going to cover this much. Most of the homes destroyed belonged to middle class folks. They only care about the "poor" so they can make an issue out of how Bush treats them. Oh yeah the home owners are mostly white too. It may not sound good but it is the truth.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

No kidding, Rick

Two months after Hurricane Andrew, we drove back from the Keys at night.  It was positively eery...mile after mile of pitch black in the middle of south Miami.

We're typically without power after little storms for as much as a week or two.  FPL has done an abysmal job maintaining their infrastructure, they let it fall over and die (happened to me, woke up one morning and the power pole was on my neighbor's new truck, died of dry rot).  Then, of course, they add surcharges to "recoup" what they should have spent maintaining the power system in the first place.

I sympathize with the good people of Texas.  These storms are devastating, and the most maddening thing can be the "authorities" getting in the way, restricting access and such.  The small amount of whining I've heard (ice & water not here fast enough) is silly, the recovery responders in Texas are new to this, and have done an excellent job.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Rick & Blonde

The only thing I can add to your comments is that media will also cover the devastation if a celebrity is affected - wildfires and mudslides.

Parts of Louisiana were also destroyed, but that isn't mentioned either. (not Geraldo-worthy;)

(side note: my in-laws now have a generator, so they are doing okay.)

What's the difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin?
One is eye candy while the other kills her own food.

Mom

I have lived here for the last 12 years. We are 40 miles from the coast but only about 20 from the Pamlico Sound. We have been through Fran, Bertha and Floyd and numerous smaller storms. Each time our propery came out unscathed. Can't say much for others in the area. We got more damage to our property from Hugo when we lived in western NC than from those.

During all these storms, I can't ever recall the media coming down on the president like they have on Bush. It is all his fault. Clinton was in when Fran, Bertha and Floyd came through. I don't remember the MSM blaming him.

About the only celeb we have around here is Nicolas Sparks. Unless you are into the mushy love stories you probably don't know him.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

TX: Locked and loaded for hurricanes

I would absolutely make the case that the people of Florida are the most hurricane savvy and prepared people anywhere, pretty much out of necessity.  And its the price you pay I guess for not seeing snowflakes in December.  :-)

But TX puts in much effort to hurricane preparedness.  Contraflow lanes on Interstates, broadened shoulders to handle additional traffic, efforts by local governments on the coast, the "interior" cities (think San Antonio and Austin) ability to absorb and house the evacuees, etc etc etc indicates this all too well.

People have to remember Galveston has a seawall for a reason.  That's because the Hurricane of 1900 made Galveston Island go "bye-bye" for a day or so.   The horrendous loss of life and property damage made Katrina look miniscule in comparison.  In fact, as I often point out, it rearranged the geography of TX, by allowing for the rise of Houston.  Before 1900, Houston was a podunk town and Galveston was a TX metropolis.  Oil discoveries, the widening of Buffalo Bayou into the Houston Ship Channel, and the fear of another 1900 stalled the growth of Galveston and Houston supplanted it as TX's primary port.

Life sucks right now on the upper Gulf Coast (and trivially, I whine that a Nightwish concert I was due to attend last night was canceled as a result of Ike).  But it will get better and life shall return to normal.  My heart goes out to those most effected in TX and LA.  But not to worry: I know I'll be getting some great Italian grub again at Mario's soon!

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Yeah, Uns

The one GOOD thing about Katrina was that it made everyone totally cognizant (Hope is NOT a play, Ray Nagin and Barack Hussein!) of what is, and is not, hurricane preparedness.

It seems as though the Gulf region has been "in the cone" more than we have of late (although one six week spread in 2004, we had hurricane conference calls for FIVE fridays, yikes!).

Hate to give you all the bad news, but I don't like the looks of this, either.   Those poor people in Haiti, the DR, and the West of Cuba.

Suck your thumbs and cry next time

If Galveston and the vicinity wanted media coverage, then why didn't they immediately respond to Ike by sitting on the ground, sucking their thumbs, and crying, behaving as if no other city in the world gets hurricanes?

The media wants us all to believe that the New Orleans reaction to hurricanes is normal, not the one being exhibited by Texans (and those in other states for that matter).  Let's go back to Katrina.  How much coverage was granted to MS, the hardest hit state?

Little Richard Versus Oprah No Contest

It is interesting how some people claim to be a Christian but then they
don't ACT like one. What is that called hypocrisy. Then there are
shinning examples like Little Richard, who when hearing Imus was fired
and for what, went into the studio and contributed a song for the IMUS
RANCH RECORD. He recorded "Ain't Never" The IMUS RANCH RECORD IS Number
#2 behind Metalica on Amazon. The Imus Ranch Record debuted number #1
on Country, Pop and Folk Charts also in the top 10 of Rock. All
Proceeds go to the IMUS RANCH FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER AND BLOOD
DISORDERS. What did Oprah say April 2007, Imus deserved to be Fired. No
he didn't, and I can't boycott Oprah over the Sarah Palin censorship,
When I don't watch Oprah anymore. Oprah is big into
controlling-censoring, her MEDIA. Little Richard, is a Voice of Reason,
in a crowd of EGOS run amok. I am not among the crowd, who needs a
daytime tv diva, to tell them what to think, read or who to vote for.
Obviously. Bill Maher is another one if you don't think like him, your stupid. No self auditing, on the part of any of these overpaid selfstyled "American Culture" experts.

Little Richard's Tribute Page, is promoting IMUS
RANCH RECORD, and a blog. I have seen Little Richard perform in person
he was at the 150th anniversary for Kansas City, Chief's Stadium, my
husband was a member of the Army color guard. I think Little Richard is
WONDERFUL. Going to one of his shows is a workout, he makes you
participate. I was clapping, getting up and down in my seat, stomping.
He even got up on his piano with some help. God Bless you Little
Richard. A strong voice for reason.

What's the difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin?
One is eye candy while the other kills her own food.

Check the list of people attacking, Sarah Palin they are familar

The same folks that are attacking Sarah Palin are almost exactly the same folks who attacked Imus back in April 2007. The mainstream media is corrupt, at an all time low. But the American People see through it, so why do they persist? One Trick Ponys, this is all they understand. When Bill Maher calls the American People stupid, it is because they won't give into being manipulated by the old media almost entirely Liberal and their bias shows. If the American people were not intelligent, then how did Imus come back bigger and better then ever? They knew a media lynching, when they see one. They are watching the elite media do the same to Sarah Palin. I predict the outcome will be the same, the more they bash her, the more the American people will see through the media corruption. No Bill Maher the American People are not stupid. So don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

IMUS RANCH RECORD CRITICALLY ACLAIMED

http://imustimes.wor...

Imus never did call Gwen Ifill a Cleaning lady, that was misreported in the New York Times, then there was a correction now all the items have been removed online Imus fans have looked in the archives. Imus stated that if they kept repeating that he said that, they could face Martin Garbus in court. Has anyone heard them making the claim lately? They wanted to shape Imus into something he wasn't to keep him off the air. That didn't work and what they are trying to do to Sarah Palin isn't going to work either it will backfire. Americans are not Stupid at all, turns out all the dumbing down is happening to the Liberals.

Why? So Quiet N.O.W.?

http://imustimes.wor...

They used this as one of their examples of how Imus, must be a racist. They piled on but it turns out no one in the media, was really looking into the accusastions. Imagine. Now the same thing is happening to Sarah Palin. Look at the Networks and publications that piled on Imus, now look what they are doing to Sarah Palin. If anyone thinks the Media isn't corrupt, then they are not consuming any print or televised media. Look at those's publications numbers like, NYT and US mag., ect..and the networks how is NBC and MSNBC doing in the ratings? Americans are not dumb Bill Maher not even close. Look at the boycotts being called for Oprah, and GAWKER.

N.O.W. was one of the many piling on Imus for being sexist but they don't have anything to say about what the media is doing to Sarah Palin hmmm....

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

I'm very much concerned

I'm very much concerned that the mess on Wall Street will confirm all the caricatures of greed and corruption that Democrats have used against it and Republicans for years (even though Democrats have been up to their eye balls in much of it). This will serve to gin up the populist sentiment that runs through much of the country and play right into the Democrats forte of class warfare. I think we are already beginning to see the results affecting the presidential race - why have GOP "mavericks" reform Wall Street when you can have real socialists really "punish" it (and put further drags on the economy - but who's counting?).

By the way, when we see a ten percent shift in the polls from week to week, what does that say about the loyalty of people's political beliefs? There's a big chunck of the elcectorate who are so politically shallow and unknowledgeable, that it makes one question if they should even be allowed to vote - not to mention those fools who are cultishly devoted to Obama.

McNotObama '08

Exactly. But the most

Exactly. But the most disturbing part is the amount of conservatives who are playing right along with the class warfare.  The amount of celebration on here for the government "you won't pay for your mistakes we'll just bail you out at the taxpayers expense" bailout is disgusting.

The worst that can be said for the mangers of those companies is that they tried to give homes to people. This is called generosity until it backfires. It just shows good intentions aren't enough. And talk about damned if you, damned if you don't. If you turn down people for a loan or mortage just because they're poor you're greedy. If you give them the loan and those people can't pay in the end, you're greedy. And it's CEO's who don't deserve to live in luxury? I thought the customer was always right. Maybe we should take away a janitors pay if he gets fired for doing a bad job, he don't deserve it, right? You don't treat people who are rich differently just because they have more. Other than the two Mae's corruption and greed from companies had little to do with it. It was really all started by stupid and sometimes lying consumers who got live in a house they couldn't afford for a while and now are facing the music.

The idea that non-wealthy people can be greedy never enters the democrat mind, in the words of Ari Flescher, ""[T]his whole thing started because people were taking out mortgages they couldn't afford to pay. That was something millions of individual Americans decided to do on their own. No one put a gun to their head and said, 'Take out a loan that's interest rate is going to ratchet up."

Ha! This is "Rich"

Oops (link here):

Pelosi, in her most recent financial disclosure form, reported that her husband owned between $250,000 and $500,000 of stock in AIG, which ceded majority control to the U.S. government this week in exchange for $85 billion of loans.

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, disclosed that his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, had more than $2 million of AIG stock at the end of 2007, when shares were worth $58.30. AIG has fallen 85 percent this week to close yesterday at $2.69. The lawmakers' aides didn't respond to calls seeking comment.

.

John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, avoided potential losses. Because of the Arizona senator's run for the White House, his wife, Cindy, last year liquidated a blind trust that had contained stock in AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Lehman. The amounts of stock she had owned weren't disclosed.

As an aside..plenty conservatives did talk about this outrage on the House floor..but of course no reporting with the msm.
