For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: The biggest bailout in US history?

The federal government is working on a sweeping series of programs that would represent perhaps the biggest intervention in financial markets since the 1930s, embracing the need for a comprehensive approach to the financial crisis after a series of ad hoc rescues. At the center of the potential plan is a mechanism that would take bad assets off the balance sheets of financial companies, said people familiar with the matter, a device that echoes similar moves taken in past financial crises. The size of the entity could reach hundreds of billions of dollars, one person said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will hold a 10 a.m. EDT press conference Friday to discuss a "comprehensive approach to market developments."

What are your thoughts? Was this necessary? Should this have been done months ago before things collapsed this week? Maybe more important, with the crisis helping Obama in the polls, will Congressional Democrats support this, or delay action until after Election Day? Assuming the latter, will they then delay final resolution until after January so that Obama will sign the bill?

This is terrible knee jerk politics

This sets such a bad precedent that I am beside myself with anger and frustration. The banks will now be releived of their "bad" loans and the Federal Government will assume the debt and presumably be the mortgage holder of thousands of mortgages that can't or won't be repaid. This is rewarding bad behavior. The bailout will go far beyong the mortgages because of all the derivatives that have been sold that use the bad mortgages as their base. So the stupid (or should it be sly) banks multiplied the bad loans by using them as the basis for futures type derivatives to be bought and sold like bonds or stocks.

If the bailout reaches $300 billion (fairly likely) then each and every taxpayer will be on the hook for about $3,300. We didn't get to vote for this, we don't get to decide how it's done. We get absolutely no say in the matter at all.

The only possible silver lining that might come out of this (a very long shot) is if multiple useless and unconstitutional departments are disolved in order to pay for this massive socialism.
I would like to recommend the Department of Education, the Department of Labor, The Department of Housing and the FAA and BIA along with severe reductions in the Department of Health and Human Services for starters.

You want change? Give me a dollar.

Let the Banks Fail you economic illiterates!

I cannot believe I would be watching government socialism in action bailing out failing banks. These banks are failing because they made bad decisions and the market correction is bankrupcy not bail outs. So where is the money going to come from? Either taxes or they will print more creating inflation. If this is what I have to look forward to under McCain all the more reason to vote Libertarian. Republicans are proving to be economic illiterates.

Jim Rogers : Let the Fannie and Freddie go bancrupt

Owning a home is NOT a right, it is a responsibility that you have to be able to afford. Unbelievable.

How about auctioning them

How about auctioning them off? Let other banks buy the bad loans at pennies on the dollar. That way, the offending parties still lose their asses, and the taxpayer is not on the hook.

"This liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

How about letting them fail

The market would have taken care of this and proven what was LONG known by anyone who passed a first year course in economics that you cannot provide mortgages to people who cannot pay them. Freddie and Fannie should not even exist. They are one of the main reasons for the housing bubble to begin with.

Bad businesses should fail and their assets liquidated. Yes, guess what people who cannot afford homes will lose them like they should. This is not Socialism, the government does not owe you a house.

"This is not Socialism, the

"This is not Socialism, the government does not owe you a house."

And therein lies the rub. This is exactly socialism, and people have been told they deserve everything just by reason of existence. This is really the logical conclusion of liberal, "equality of outcome" based thinking.

Everyone has a "right" to housing, health care, food, even their very survival. And those that can't (or won't) provide for themselves will be provided for.

We've now raised generations of citizens who really, truly believe that it's government's job to take care of them. This is so far from the Darwinism that their politics is enslaved to that the irony is insane. These people pray to their "saviour" just as surely as Old Testament prophets prayed to God for succor.

But their "Big G" is "Government." And their "prayers" are protests, marches, sit-ins.

And votes.

Several blogs that I read this morning have point to David Kernell son of DEMOCRATIC State Representative (Tenn) Mike Kernell, to be the one that hacked into Gov. Palin's e-mail.

This could get very interesting. Of course, not that the MSM Barrackas will report it or, actually, they'll find a way to spin it against Palin.

I hope they send him away. Funny how his Dad is pleading ignorance and throwing him under the bus. What a d1ck.

Why was Gov. Palin conducting state business on an unsecured email account?  Of course it was wrong to hack into it.  It was also much too easy - half an hour of social engineering.

The Republican White House tried the same trick - avoid leaving a paper trail by using private email accounts.  And now those emails just can't seem to be found - quell surprise!  If Gov. Palin wasn't so worried about what she was doing, she would have used her official (secure) email.  Apparently she is not interested in open and transparent government.

Why was Gov. Palin

Why was Gov. Palin conducting state business on an unsecured email account?

Please prove that any governmental business was conducted on the Yahoo account.

For the record - it was wrong for anyone to hack into Gov. Palin's email account.

Hacker impersonated Palin, stole e-mail password

WASHINGTON (AP) — Details emerged Thursday behind the break-in of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's e-mail account, including a first-hand account suggesting it was vulnerable because a hacker was able to impersonate her online to obtain her password.

The hacker guessed that Alaska's governor had met her husband in high school, and knew Palin's date of birth and home Zip code...

The break-in of Palin's private account is especially significant because Palin sometimes uses non-government e-mail to conduct state business. Previously disclosed e-mails indicate her administration embraced Yahoo accounts as an alternative to government e-mail, which could possibly be released to the public under Alaska's Open Records Act.  [emphasis added]

At the time, critics of Palin's administration were poring over official e-mails they had obtained from the governor's office looking for evidence of improper political activity...

Other news reports recount that members of Gov. Palin's administration emailed each other asking about using BlackBerry and other private email accounts for state business - and would those accounts be exempt from disclosure.

The issue isn't "righting [sic] off" a home office.  The issue is billing the state of Alaksa for staying at home:

Palin bills Alaska for nights in own home, family travel expenses

By JAMES V. GRIMALDI and KARL VICK
WASHINGTON POSTPublished: Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 9:02 a.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 9:13 a.m. ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he made on official business for his wife.

Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by the Washington Post.

The governor's daughters and husband charged the state $43,490 to travel and many of the trips were to and from their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show…

The popular governor collected the per diem allowance from April 22, four days after the birth of her fifth child, until June 3, when she flew to Juneau for two days. Palin moved her family to the capital during the legislative session last year, but she prefers to stay in Wasilla and drive 45 miles to Anchorage to a state office building where she conducts most of her business, aides have said…

She wrote some form of "Lodging -- own residence" or "Lodging -- Wasilla residence" more than 30 times at the same time she took a per diem, according to the reports. In two dozen undated amendments to the reports, the governor deleted the reference to staying in her home but still charged the per diem.In separate filings, the state was billed about $25,000 for Palin's daughters' expenses and $19,000 for her husband, Todd Palin.

Flights topped the list for the most expensive items, and the daughter whose bill was the highest was Piper, 7, whose flights cost nearly $11,000, while Willow, 14, claimed about $6,000 and Bristol, 17, accounted for about $3,400…

In the past, per diem claims by Alaska state officials have carried political risks. In 1988, the head of the state Commerce Department was pilloried for collecting a per diem charge of $50 while staying in his Anchorage home, according to local news accounts. The commissioner, the late Tony Smith, resigned.

"It was quite the little scandal," said Tony Knowles, the Democratic governor from 1994 to 2000. "I gave a direction to all my commissioners if they were ever in their house, whether it was Juneau or elsewhere, they were not to get a per diem because, clearly, it is and it looks like a scam -- you pay yourself to live at home."

"And the policy was not to reimburse for family travel on commercial airlines, because there is no direct public benefit to schlepping kids around the state," he said. The rules were articulated by Mike Nizich, then director of administrative services in the governor's office, said Knowles and an aide to another former governor, Walter Hickel.

When you lack ideas, this is what you do

I guess this is easier than explaining to people what "positive change" means...

frank, please consult a map of AK.  Wasilla is a suburb of Anchorage, so to get to Juneau, in all likelyhood the Palins will fly there.  The flight from ANC to JNU is 90 minutes.  It's pretty damn far.  Yeah, I could see why she might conduct some business from home.

If you visit downtown Anchorage as well you will see that there are offices of the Legislature there where they conduct some business as this ameliorates some of the headache of having to travel to Juneau all the time.

And by the way, Palin has spent less money on office expenditure than her predecessors.  Gov Murkowski in particular is looked at throughout the state as a massive disappointment.

Now do you have any IDEAS you wish to share?

But nooo, of course, you need to spin out of this flat-out wrong act by an obvious Republican-hater operative and play the apologist... fabricating nonsense about what sort of email accounts politicians should and shouldn't be using.

This then leading to the full stretch of stretches that she's governing in some non-transparent way, and it's good that we've uncovered this with a TOTAL INVASION OF HER PRIVACY -- that mantra you libs hold so near and dear.

Mr. Shy:

Who said it was good (other than you, of course)?

As for political figures using non-secured email accounts, this little episode demonstrates the wisdom of that approach.  Or you could ask Republican Mark Foley about that one, as well.

In the mean time, if our elected officials use private email accounts to avoid public disclosure (as the Bush White House did) that's flat out wrong.  Period.

If you care so much about privacy, what's your stance on the Patriot Act? Or the No-Fly List - so secret we (the people) can't read the law it's based on.

Mr. Ends-Over-Means

Okay, Mr. Suddenly Ends Justifies Means.

Here are my ends-justifies-means arguments then, too, which you should be fine with to go by your logic:

The means by which we made the sufficient argument to invade Iraq are now mute as the ends have been achieved. We've toppled a dictatorship and replaced it with a democracy, and right in the heart of the volatile Middle East.

The means by which we've wire-tapped or "eavesdropped" on our citizens (so scream the lunatic and not-so- leftists) are now verboten as the ends have been achieved. We have not been attacked since 9/11.

And on and on.

Of course, for you, it depends what ends are in play. Also, there's been no proven end to Palin doing anything wrong having a private email account that almost all people in all careers have, I'm sure. Oh, and heck, she's only Governer of a podunk out-there state, Alaska, so does she really need to exclusively use a government/secured account? (/sarc)

Mr. Shy:

You've abandoned any attempt at having a conversation.  You make up what I said, created the "logic" behind that, and then responded.

How about you just reply to what I wrote and skip you making stuff up?

Gov. Palin should not be using a non-secure email account for state business.  Whether or not anybody else does it (and we know this was a popular scheme at the Bush White House) it's stupid and it's wrong.

Hackers should not hack into it.

Is that really so hard to understand?  Skip all the ends justify the means crap (they don't).

If you consider Iraq a success, Lord help us from a Republican failure.

"We" haven't been attacked since 9/11.  Just our friends in Italy, Spain, London - did I leave one out here?  And all those Americans who've died in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Guess you don't consider those meaningful losses, do you?  I do - a waste of blood along with the huge waste of treasure.  Since our government has spent some $815,000,000,000 in the past week or so - perhaps we'll cut back a bit overseas.

J Frank

Frank, the likes of you is so tedious to debate with, but okay, I'll roll'em up and here goes:

If you consider Iraq a success, Lord help us from a Republican failure.

What do you consider Iraq? It was a war, I'll remind you, so on a scale of wars, how much of a -- I guess your word will, astonishingly, be "failure"? -- is Iraq, as the situation is constituted now?

""We" haven't been attacked since 9/11.  Just our friends in Italy, Spain, London - did I leave one out here?

First off, how you so easily bypass a very fundamental thing as "a country's president's first job is to protect the country he/she presides over" escapes me, completely. I guess you don't put the country you live in -- to keep you and yours alive and safe -- first. Gosh, the horrors, that I should do this. And, of course, it must mean I have no compassion for the "global community". Right now, the globe is not one big loving country, so as much as I love humanity, I'm standing by the country I live in -- and not blindly, but because I believe it's a great country.

Secondly, our friends in Spain, Italy and London -- all three, places I've been to and have fond memories -- and yes, more, that you left out, have been free of violence and attacks for nearly four years (early 2005 in London, last one), and some for a longer time. I'm thankful for this, and to Bush's actions ("eeeeww, did he just compliment BushCheneyHitlerChimp?"), and I believe you won't be seeing any for some time. Unfortunately, there was the botched attempt on that embassy last week, killing a few, but it was foiled thankfully.

And all those Americans who've died in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Guess you don't consider those meaningful losses, do you?"

Americans that died in "two theaters of war", is what you meant to write, I'm sure. No wait, what you REALLY should have written was American *soldiers* that died, courageously, for our country, restoring two dangerous, rogue nations to some sort of modern, civilized, democratic condition.

You better believe I am indebted to them all. Are you?

Mr S. You may recall that

Mr S.

You may recall that 52 people were blown apart and murdered on three London Underground trains and one bus, by 4 middle-class Britons born in the UK, of Pakistani Muslim descent.

So the USA's success at preventing, so far, 9/11 x 10, had NOTHING to do with the London savagery, except in the obvious connection of rabid Islamo-fascist ideology preached in hate filled mosks in the UK, Pakistan and the USA, of course.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Jack B

Hey. Thanks, and duly noted, and you're right. It was horrible, and I was there just a month before (I believe it was...)

I just hope that Bush's actions -- and Blair for all those years, siding with him -- in being on the offensive around the world with radical Islam and all the hell that it brings, is helping to, slowly at least, expose to the world that there's good and there's evil. These attacks earlier in the decade were unfortunately an inevitable reaction to them finally having their swamps drained.

NOW PLAYING:
Governor Palin Get Your Gun

Oh -- though they might

Oh -- though they might have been "inspired," by the US military
actions in Afghanistan (and Pakistan), but as that's the war the
Democrats allegedly "support," that's okay then!

It is odd though that the Democrats support this "war." Afghanistan has never attacked the United States.

The dark and dirty little secret about the UK, is that for the past 20 years at least, suceesive governments have allowed a multitude of violent Islamo-nutbags live the UK unhindered. So long as they weren't killing Brits.

So all sorts of "radicals" from Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan, Algeria, et al, all wanted for crimes in their home countries, and all allowed to fester in the UK because they would be treated badly if they were deported back to the scenes of their crimes.

For instance, in 1992, Algeriam Muslims in France bombed the PARIS METRO, killing five French citizens.

The French government has been trying since 1997 to get them extradited from England to face trial. Unsuccessfully.

You reap what you sow.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

An embarrassed, ashamed Socialist

If you consider Iraq a success, Lord help us from a Republican failure.  I was there earlier this year.  It isn't a bowl of cherries but it is FAR from the failure you so ache for it to be.

"We" haven't been attacked since 9/11.  Just our friends in Italy, Spain, London - did I leave one out here?  Italians were victimized in the past by the Red Brigades; the Spanish by the ETA, and the British by the IRA.  Your point?  And all those Americans who've died in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Gee, frank, how about the Americans and countless others whose lives have been SAVED there.  Yeah, guess what?  I saw that to happen before my eyes.  Guess you don't consider those meaningful losses, do you?  I do - a waste of blood along with the huge waste of treasure.  But paying poor people to BE poor and otherwise coddling, pampering and babying Americans a la France and Sweden would be a very wise investment. Right, frank, my good little Socialist? Since our government has spent some $815,000,000,000 in the past week or so - perhaps we'll cut back a bit overseas.  Which you likewise ache for.  Admit it - you are deeply embarrassed and overwhelmingly ashamed of being an American and of the United States military because of our will and means to project power globally and to spread democracy and freedom elsewhere (and that is never ever free, in spite of your beliefs).  When you travel overseas and hand your passport to Country X's border control official - what do you do?  Turn beet red, apologize to him/her for being American, or hang your head in shame, or do all three?

This post of yours is all the evidence I need that you want the United States to be a Socialist Nanny State like Sweden - just as pampering and just as whiny on the world scene.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

I believe Harry Reid has

I believe Harry Reid has said they won't be voting on it this year. This is the first bit of good news, no meddling from the incompetents who refused to reform the industry when they had a chance back in 2003 and 2005.  (BTW-Obama opposed reform in 2005 outted by none other than WaPo surprisingly)  The Bush Admin will do it for them so next year they can take pot shots at them for not doing exactly perfect.

Expediency is the name of game when you are faced with crisis management.  The only responsible people that can do something to mitigate a government induced problem is the government.  The government made the mess with political appointees from the idiot Clintoon Admin now the Bush Admin has to clean up the mess.  Shock, GOP cleans up Dem mess yet again...  No wonder Dems believe actions have no consequences, they never have to clean up after themselves.

This problem needs to be resolved on Nov 4th by the public, if you vote for a Democrat you DESERVE to pay for the mess they make.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

The same Old Game

The Bush Admin will do it for them so next year they can take pot shots at them for not doing exactly perfect.

Ain't that how the game's played?

Which party opened the road to all of this disaster in the 1990's, rolled over and blamed the other for the problems they created more than a decade later, waits for Bush to sign the magic resolution, and will eventually back-stab him for doing so?

Never forget who is working on upper level Obama campaign staff.

But the Dems blocked it. In 2003 Bush predicted this but the Dems refused to act. In 2005 McCain introduced a bill to fix the Fannie/Freddie probelms but the DEMS blocked it.

The Dems pushed this "everyone can get a house" financial mess that allowed many that could not afford a house to get approved for a mortgage...

Do you DARE try to blame this mess on Bush or the Repubs...

Bush Nationalize Fannie and Freddie - WAKE UP!

The Dems didn't Nationalize it, Bush did!! He just made it worse. Do you not have any concept of what is going on? Where is this money going to come from? Hello! Either taxes or inflation, take your pick. We are now paying to keep people who made irresponsible mortgage decisions from dealing with the consequences. Instead the rest of us who comprehend economics get to foot the bill.

Stay in denial and keep supporting your football team because you obviously failed economics.

Fanny and Freddie were

Fanny and Freddie were already "natialized" when they were created, by congress. It has always been tied to the fed gov.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

They were effectively Private Institutions with "Advantages"

Fannie Mae was effectively privatized in 1968 while retaining special advantages endowed to it by the Fed. Freddie Mac was set up as a private institution, for the specific reason to prevent us from footing the bill. But like all pipe dreams and government interventions in the economy it proved to be worthless.

I'm done...

turn me over. This country has been going over to socialism ever since FDR started the crooked scam known as social security. It should have been called social welfare. What would you call something that takes a big chunk of your money throughout your working life and gives it to someone else, and when it's time for you to retire, you get a miserable little check that is being taken from someone else's paycheck, and so on and so on...etc. You can't even live on the amount you get. I say, let everything fail...and start over with a budget that is mandated by the constitution. Give me my paycheck and I'll put away for my retirement.

SouthJersey1953:

Gov. Palin "took on the oil companies" in Alaska by getting passed a windfall profits tax.  The higher the price of oil, the higher the tax.  The money collected was directly redistributed to each person who lives in Alaska per head - no needs test.  Isn't that socialism?  Meanwhile, the oil companies take that tax as an expense and reduce their Federal income tax liabilities (those that pay taxes, of course).

The money collected was

The money collected was directly redistributed to each person who lives in Alaska per head - no needs test.  Isn't that socialism?

No, of course you will be familiar with the statement "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." slogan popularized by Karl Marx in his 1875 Critique of the Gotha Program.

There is your needs testing.

What Palin effectively did was sell a state asset and provide equal shares to the citizenry.  Hey, THATS KINDA COOL!!!!!

A Socialist crying about Socialism

frank, isn't it Socialism when you severely penalize producers and successful people with punitive, confiscatory tax rates?  I bet you think it is GREAT that we punish and steal from those Hyper Evil Rich Bastards, and that nearly 100% of the federal tax burden is paid for by the top 60% of wage earners.

I think that you think this because the Socialist God you so slavishly support that those 60% aren't paying quite enough, and you worship him like a deity.

Again, and yes, I know you are dedicated to missing the point here: If I Wanted The Perfect Presidential Candidate, Would Run For President.  The PFD seems to irritate you to no end.  Go cry to Gov. Jay Hammond about it.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Unsane:

You still talking about running for President?  Have you ever been elected to any office?  Dogcatcher?

Who do you think should be paying taxes - poor folks?

Personally, I'd like to see some corporations paying taxes.  But that's not America in 2008.

I have no particular beef with the PFD.  You're the one who keeps bringing that up - just before you name-thunk Gov. Hammond.  I asked you about the RRF - and you still haven't responded to that.  You conflate it with the PFD and tell us about your Klondike years and we're supposed to consider you a regular Robert Service and an expert on the Yukon.

Well, U-Con, the RRF is Socialism.  Go ahead and embrace it - you obviously approve of taxpayers in 49 states supporting the residents of The Welfare State - Alaska.  They send $1 to DC and get $2 back.  They feed at the publc trough and we pick up the tab.

It's a wonderful world...

Corporations do pay taxes! 35%!

Everyone should pay taxes if anyone has to but we need to move to a flat tax of say 10-15%. We need to REDUCE corporate taxes to 25% to make being a U.S. corporation tax competitive with foreign countries that have lower rates. We need to slash taxes across the board and gut Federal spending to match, that means public sector layoffs, abolishing federal pensions, making federal health care options privatized to reflect the current market and simply abolishing outright worthless government organizations.

Forget taxes. I think we

Forget taxes. I think we should all stop paying taxes until our government goes to (by law) a revenue neutral system. The government is only allowed to spend what it takes in with only one exception... in time of war!

Balanced Budgets and simplified taxation

I LOVE the idea of combining a flat tax with a Balanced Budget Amendment (with a provision for paying off the national debt in, say, 30 or 40 years...)!

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Flat Tax + Balanced Budget - Count me in

...I would vote for that in a second.

A Reason for Perpetual War

But then you have a reason for perpetual war. I mean who would benefit from staying in Iraq for years? Contractors? Nah, they want the war to end.

What a freaking joke

You still talking about running for President?  Have you ever been elected to any office?  Dogcatcher?  I have NEVER seen anyone work so hard and put so much effort into missing a point.

Who do you think should be paying taxes - poor folks?  Every single citizen of the United States should pay 17% taxes on all income above, say, $36,000 or so.  That's more or less the Steve Forbes flat tax idea (frank, ideas are...forget it) from 1996 and that's why I voted for him for president in the primaries back in the day.

It doesn't bother you, then, that nearly 100% of the federal tax burden is shouldered by the top 60% percent of wage earners?  If that is the case, don't you EVER whine to me ever again about me calling you a Socialist.  I don't like coddling poor people who are poor because they continually make poor decisions!

have no particular beef with the PFD.  You're the one who keeps bringing that up  Actually, YOU are the one who initially brought it up- just before you name-thunk Gov. Hammond. Jealous, frank? I asked you about the RRF - and you still haven't responded to that.  You conflate it with the PFD and tell us about your Klondike years and we're supposed to consider you a regular Robert Service and an expert on the Yukon.  Actually, people can think of me however the f*#k they want.  Maybe if you put as much effort into formulation and articulating ideas as you do being a boor and a smartass, maybe more people on NB would like you and listen to you from time to time.

Well, U-Con I'm a Husky all of a sudden?, the RRF is Socialism.  The hardened, committed Socialist, committed to a Socialist God, scolding and lecturing ME on Socialism.  What a joke.  This is nothing more than you acting like a little kid, jumping up and down screaming "SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SEE!  SHE'S A SOCIALIST TOO UNSANE!!!"  Again, and you have already demonstrated to me earlier in your whiny post that you are too poor a reader to grasp what I am saying (hint: focus on the first portion) :IF I WANTED A PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT, I WOULD RUN FOR OFFICE.  Go ahead and embrace it - you obviously approve of taxpayers in 49 states supporting the residents of The Welfare State - Alaska.  Prove it.  Besides, the fact that someone who thinks it is GREAT that the government steals from the top 60% of wage earners to coddle, pamper and baby the bottom 40% makes your whine a sick joke.

They send $1 to DC and get $2 back.  They feed at the publc trough and we pick up the tab  If this bothered you nearly as much as you whine that it does, you wouldn't support the government stealing from the top 60% of wage earners to give to the bottom 40%.  So this falls on deaf ears.  You want us ALL feeding at the public trough, you want ALL of our lives orbiting the holy city of Washington, DC.  You are just too dishonest to admit it.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Not only is it unjust, it will make the problem worse.

There's no time to waste!!!

Your 401 (k) is in the crapper, you say? Well, pour more money into it then!  Now you can invest on the cheap, and besides, the government will need to steal from more people by the time you cash it out.

A word of advice for those

A word of advice for those who are doing payroll deductions into 401k and 403b, you are the most savvy investor in the market today, by engaging in Dollar Cost Averaging you don't have to be concerned how far the market drops (market timing). If your time line for retirement is 5 years or greater continuing to buy index funds via the retirement account will more than make up any paper loss you have temporarily experienced and you will end up far ahead of those who ran from the market at the bottom for cash.  The market timers are only people that should be concerned, they are typically static investors with lump sum amounts.

For those whose time line to retirement is less than 5 years, you should have been adjusting your portfolio toward greater percentages of cash (money market & CDs) and bonds, at this point you will have to delay your rebalancing of stock index funds versus bonds and cash for a few years until the market comes back up.  It should go without saying if you are retired, you had no business being in a stock fund of any kind, if your financial advisor didn't tell you that you need to fire the idiot, wait it out, get a part time job and wait for the market to recover.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

dscott:

Doesn't that advice depend on the age when one retires and how long one plans to live after retirement?  Say a person is fortunate enough to retire at 65.  A man will probably live another 10 or 15 years - a woman 15 or 20.  That may well be too early to completely pull out of the market.  A great deal also depends on the mix of retirement accounts, whole life policies, Social Security earnings, [remaining] home equity, etc., that any given person has on hand.

You suggest someone who is retired has no business being in the market.  Say a person is a 20/20 retiree at 60 (or 15/15 at 55).  I think the stock market could be an excellent place for that person to have a portion of their net worth invested.

Not if you are smart enough

Not if you are smart enough to participate in L series funds.

That's why I left out the

That's why I left out the age.  Each person has their own timeline for retirement but the general rule still applies.  As a general rule the closer you get to retirement, the more you should be phasing out stocks towards cash and bonds (non junk status).  Remember what happened to those retirees who invested in high yield junk bonds and when rates dropped they came up short.  Like you mentioned IF you own a home and have whole life policies, those will also factor into the mix.  Not everyone is a homeowner and not everyone uses whole life in their investments, some rent and some use term life for the short term and use their 401k or IRA more heavily.

New York Times goes again.

Once again, the New York Times will publish bad news stories about the military, but only publish a positive story about the military kicking and screaming...

Todays example:

The New York Times gleefully publishes a story saying that two soldiers were killed by a comrade 25 miles south of Bagdhad.  The two casualties were identified as Staff Sgt. Darris J. Dawson, 24, of Pensacola, Fla., and Sgt. Wesley R. Durbin, 26, of Hurst, Tex. They were killed early Sunday at the base, about 25 miles south of Baghdad, a military statement said.

This story was published on Page 8.

Totally missing from the Times was a story that indicated that USMC Sgt. Rafael Peralta, would be awarded the Navy Cross rather than the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq that resulted in him falling onto a live handgrenade to save his comrades.

The lack of a story could be obviated by the New York Times in that there is some controversy that Peralta who was a green card holder from Mexico and who immigrated to enlist in the Marine Corps was a candidate for the Medal of Honor and this story alone should have made the selection newsworthy.

The priest asks, 'Is that you, little Joey Pagano ?'

'Yes, Father, it is.'

'And who was the girl you were with?'

'I can't tell you, Father, I don't want to ruin her reputation'

Well, Joey, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now.

Was it Tina Minetti?'

'I cannot say.'

'Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?'

'I'll never tell.'

'Was it Nina Capelli?'

'I'm sorry, but I cannot name her.'

'Was it Cathy Piriano?'

'My lips are sealed.'

'Was it Rosa Di Angelo, then?'

'Please, Father, I cannot tell you.'

The priest sighs in frustration. 'You're very tight lipped, Joey Pagano, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself.'

Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers,

'What'd you get?'

Did anyone else hear McCain's Wisconsin speech this AM on the financial crisis?

Maybe my priorities are in the wrong place, but I was thrilled to no end to hear him, at the beginning of the speech, before even getting into solutions, mention the fact that Obama has two people on his advisory staff who were actually complicit in causing the Fanny/Freddy mess.  He also mentioned that Obama was second only to Dodd in money received  from those institutions, and the fact that at the same time, he voted "no" on McCain's plan to clean up some of the mess in 2005!

I fully expect the Obama camp to come out with a statement saying that this is "the same old politics,"while at the same time, Obama's new strategy seems to be, to quote Shakespeare: Cry Havoc!  And let slip the dogs of war!

Would you have been more thrilled if what Sen. McCain said was true?  Where's the evidence that Franklin Raines advised Sen. Obama's campaign?

Meanwhile, Sen. McCain happily hired a gang of registered lobbyists ("x" during the campaign, then it will be back to work for them) including folks who worked for Freddie and Fannie.  Did that come up in his speech?

Sen. Obama said it best.   "After twenty-six years in Washington, DC, John McCain talks about cleaning out the 'old boys network.'  The other name for that is a McCain Campaign staff meeting."

Hey j. frank...did you know...

From a liberal's favorite source, Wikipedia. Maybe next time try to actually do some research and find sources?

On July 16, 2008, The Washington Post reported that Franklin Raines had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters." [6]. Also, in an editorial in August 27, 2008 titled "Tough Decision Coming", the Washington Post editorial staff claimed that "Two members of Mr. Obama's political circle, James A. Johnson and Franklin D. Raines, are former chief executives of Fannie Mae."[7]

If we, the taxpayer, do NOT

If we, the taxpayer, do NOT bail out Fannie, Freddie and AIG, we'll be inline for some pain in the (relatively) short term future. Up to 18 months, by my guess.

If we DO bail out Fannie, Freddie and AIG, we'll be in for some VERY short term pain, lasting maybe until November. Good times will roll for the next 18 months or so, and the pain will have magnified tenfold by then.

It's like a tooth ache. We're in a little pain now. We can get some vicodin and ignore it, and later we'll end up in a LOT of pain, or get the root canal now, and be in intense pain for a few days and it will clear up. Then we get to go back to eating ice cream.

Yesterday, I heard a talk-show guest (don't remember which show, or who the guest was) that displayed how much farther to the left Sen Obama is than Sen Boxer (or Feinstein, memory is fuzzy today) on the issue of abortion. The basis of the claim was the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, in which the then-Illinois Senator voted against it, in spite of Sen Boxer voting for a federal version of the same thing.

Today, I clicked onto the "issues-o-meter" with the NY-Post, and it has Sen Obama almost evenly between the "liberal" and "moderate" ticks. Odd, for the most liberal senator in the senate, to see that some still think he's moderate.

I heard the first four parts of the story (HRC invited, SP invited, HRC reneges, SP disinvited), but didn't hear the conclusion (HRC reinvited).  What can I say?  For all her posturing to be "the one wearing the pants," this certainly sounded like a case of petty cheerleader envy.  And I cannot believe the group in question would have the audacity to disinvite Palin and reinvite the dissing HRC.

Lies, More Lies, and Damned Lies

It would appear that every 3rd statement from Obama's multi-faceted mouth is a lie, many of which are lies accusing John McCain of lying. I'm surprised he hasn't claimed authorship of the 1964 Civil Right Act, leading the invasion of Normandy, and writing all of Shakespeare's plays. There's hardly much difference between those whoppers and the ones Obama has already uttered.

So how do we call him to task on this? Obviously, in a sane world this would be the task of the media. Of course, they think The Exaulted O can commit no sin. So much for them doing their job.

So here's my idea: we need a national organization with pockets deep enough to buy lots of TV time, an organization on the order of snopes.com, whose mission is to debunk the outrageous claims of Barack Obama, and anyone else that tells lies, more lies, and damned lies. Heck, I think it would make a great TV show and would garner lots of ad revenue.

The only thing that will save us will be for the gov't to stop all spending( and that ain't gonna happen). Everyone better get ready to start a garden and learn to hunt.

We Conservatives already have gardens and hunt!

No debate here, MrDebater, we Conservatives already have gardens and hunt!

Actually, this could make for an interesting argument between Conservatives and liberals. Who would be better equipped with skills of basic survival in a world of total collapse? I can hunt almost anything from rabbit on up. I can grow almost any vegetable, grain, and fruit. Unlike Obama, I can actually grow Arugula. I know how to set traps. I can skin and butcher all that I kill. I know how to can food, jellies, etc, and know how to cure meat with smoke and salt. I know some medicinal plants. I know a few different ways to make a fire without matches or a lighter. I know how to knap arrowheads. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Hey, I'm not that old! I

Hey, I'm not that old!

I had a roommate in college whose girlfriend majored in theatre, and minored in poetry. We always made fun of her, asking her if her daddy was okay with throwing all that money away just so she could find a husband...

Everyone relax Bush can always print more money

There is never anything to worry about when Bush can print more money. Why reduce spending when you can wave your magic wand and print more money? Can Bush print me a million?
