For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: U.S. army deserter deported from Canada.
Jeremy Hinzman said Wednesday he was ordered out of the country by September 23 by Canada's Border Services Agency. Hinzman deserted the U.S. Army in 2004 after learning his unit was to be deployed to Iraq. He refused to participate in what he calls an immoral and illegal war.

How many times did you serve? Once is good enough for me and anything beyond that is, well, HEROIC in my eyes.
I only have one DD Form 214, but I do know people who reenlisted long after their original enlistment was over. I even attended Basic with a 32 year old who originally served in Vietnam, apparently he had to attend Basic as he served in a different branch (he previously was a “squiddie" as I affectionately referred to him), and I always thought of him as a prefect example of Honor, Duty, Sacrifice, and Commitment. So, here's to your heroism and dedication to our Constitution, the government which enforces it, and the people it protects. Thank you, again and again!

August 14, 2008 - 19:23 ET by UnsaneI have an active duty DD-214, and, when I got back from my deployment, the Reserves had me update the one I will eventually receive from them at some point. So I'll have two; there are people who do interservice transfers and such that have more than that, even.
As for the deserter: let's shoot him.

August 14, 2008 - 15:07 ET by JasonCThis guy is a coward.
I will gladly concede that many, if not the majority, of those who have claimed conscientious objection have done so disingenuously, out of fear or cowardice. And clearly, this man was foolish to join a volunteer military if he was going to react in such a way to deployment in an immoral war.
However: To suggest that making such choices based on morality always and automatically indicates cowardice is to logically and conversely suggest that courageous men automatically lack moral conviction.
And surely this is not the case.

That is because liberals see no value in fulfilling obligations.

August 14, 2008 - 17:42 ET by BDUpon further reflection, possibly the best result of this miscreants actions would be a modern day emulation of the great short story by Edward Everett Hale in his work "The Man Without a Country" in which a US Army Officer named Phillip Nolan curses his country during a Court martial with the words "I wish that I shall never hear of the United States of America Again."
In Hale's telling of the story, Nolan is then put on a US warship with the orders to the commander to never mention the USA to him, nor let any of the crew pass on information to him nor allow civilians to inform him of his homelands fate.
For 40 years Nolan sails on various US ships, passed from vessel to vessel at sea as each is headed back to the homeport so that he never makes it home.
At the end, Nolan dies an anguished man witnessing the US flag gaining stars but never understanding which states have been added to the Union, who in the end regrets the folly of his ways.
If none of you have ever read it, it was written in 1863 at the height of the Civil War, and the phraseology takes getting used to, but I recommend it highly.

I am beginning to think
August 14, 2008 - 10:08 ET by mattmI am beginning to think that the McCain camp believes that they can count on the conservatives to hold their noses and vote McCain to avoid the disaster of an Obama administration, and that by going 'moderate' he'll be able to grab a significant portion of Democrat voters.
They may be right about that, but what a sad commentary on the state of things, especially when the conservative ideology is a winning message when it's articulated well and adhered to.
I look at McCain's candidacy as a wasted opportunity. If he picks turncoat Pawlenty (light rail, Twins stadium, smoking ban, cigarette 'fee', ethanol mandates, etc...), I'll be voting Libertarian...

Shawn, I have 2
August 15, 2008 - 07:58 ET by Dan The Man 2Shawn, I have 2 questions? Does the mall have the right to refuse service to anyone they deem? And, is the girls skirt a bit short?
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

It's not as though it doesn't fit her, and it's not lingerie.

I am just saying that it is astonishing the reason she was kicked out. The skirt was not exposing her privates and telling someone the reason she is getting kicked out is because other womens husbands are looking at her is ridiculus.

The story had no comments
August 15, 2008 - 08:49 ET by Dan The Man 2The story had no comments from the guard or mall, so I am skeptical that is all there is to this story. The girl looks like a tease to me.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

August 15, 2008 - 08:56 ET by shawn228Once again you have a point, there are always two sides to every story.
however, you can't judge a book by its cover and all I see is a attractive girl and cannot tell if she is a tease.
The fact that the mall is not returning phone calls or issuing a statement, I am assuming the story is true.
Just like I really hate it when liberals tell me me what foods I can eat and what words i'm allowed to say, I hate it when morals police try to crack down on what they deem indecent.
If what she says is true Dan, do you agree with her or the mall?
