For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: declining energy prices.

As many of you have likely noticed, energy prices have been plummeting the past four weeks or so with oil under $120 this morning and wholesale gasoline under $3. Last week, Goldman Sachs said the recent decline in gasoline demand will be short-lived once people get used to these higher prices, and oil will head higher as a result. Do you agree, or think that what's happened here is prices finally got to a point that either angered people or impacted their budgets thereby forcing changes in behavior that could be long-term?

Consider that when this happened in the '70s, Americans radically altered their behavior by trading in their gas guzzlers for smaller, fuel efficient Japanese cars. This trend lasted long enough for American automakers to have lots of problems until they caught up in the mid-'80s. Thoughts?

Final question: would lower oil and gas prices as we head into the elections help McCain, or would it be better for them to stay high so that Republicans would have an issue to beat up Democrats over?

Deceit

I'm re-reading Hoover's Masters of Deceit  from the 1950's. He describes the communist threat to America which, in my opinion, is far from dead today. Something that caught my eye is how vicious the lefties are to anyone who disagrees with them. Their aim, pure and simple, is to destroy their opponents. They counsel their followers to do all in their power to make life miserable for their politcal adversaries. They know no compromise. They lie and spin sans conscience. And most of the time they do it in private, while exhibiting a smiley face in public. I see this in Barry Obama.

Good choice of reading material. : O

If it came out today most people would just "ho-hum" it, because many books like that have been written since then. The fact that it was published in '58? seems like it was very foretelling in what we could come to expect from today's Dem party & the media. It's almost as if they've become a self fullfilling prophecy of Hoover's concerns.

Should be on reading lists for high schools.

High Oil Prices Are a Dem Problem

I think lower gas prices are a result of the speech GWB gave allowing drilling in the US and it being a hot topic in Congress.

I believe that if we were to start talking up drilling at home, our Saudi "friends" would drop the price very quickly and we'd be back to the days of gas at 60 cents a gallon.

However, the Democrats in their mixed up fantasy world want to push alternative energy.  So it is in their interest to keep oil prices high.  Pelosi not wanting to allow an up/down vote is just one example of this.  Obama not wanting to give a summer tax break on gas is another.

Game Over

I agree that it was Bush's rescinding the executive ban on offshore drilling that began the downward cycle. The fact that we are using less energy has also been a contributing factor. What has also added to that is that the people calling for offshore drilling are also as focused on other forms of power. The sum total means that the future for demand of oil is not very good.

McCain played this very well and is being very forceful about it. The Dems are committing mass-suicide over this issue and lke Obama are being seen as elitist and out of touch. Nancy Pelotis has secured that by flying off to SF in taxpayer paid jumbo jet leaving Americans high and dry.

Obama is now seen as reactive, not in touch with the facts of the issue, and not a leader of agent of change.

Pelosi understands vulnerable libs will get buried if they vote against and/or do not participate in a drilling bill.

On the other side, McCain wants to open drilling as well as nuclear. And he has no intentions of using the reserve.

Using the stragic reserve is not up to Congress. It would have to come from the President himself, so to Pelosi's opening the reserve, it aint gonna happen. She has no control over that.

Multiple Choice

Goldman Sachs is right to a degree, demand will increase as people adjust to the price, tho some conservstion will occur due to people trading for more fuel efficient vehicles and the efforts of those trying to "save the planet" from "global warming". People are angry, for different reasons and at different targets. But overall they are angry because high energy cost are an inconvenience to there accustomed standard of living, and if they are a little bit over-extended on credit, it can crimp that lifestyle dramaticaly and they get really angry and stressed and they look for "who" to blame. If ole Mac can and will point the finger of blame at the Dems(dims), and make it stick, for not allowing us to increase our own domestic supply by drilling offshore and in Alaska, he could easily win the election.

The U.S. auto makers will shift to more fuel efficient vehicles, because long term high energy cost and short supplies of oil are not going away any time soon. Because there is another 800lb gorilla on the block called China, and India, and other developing countries. The U.S. was the big 400lb gorilla for a long time, but not anymore. The developement of these other countries along with our own increasing demand will keep oil prices high for years to come, although there may be periods of boom and bust which will cause the price to fluctuate dramatically. Overall the price trend will be upwards, unless and untill, we, are someone developes an alternative.

There are serious security concerns, both economic and military, tied to the price of energy and the availible supply and demand equation. Yet Americans will continue to consume every bit of energy they can afford without a thought to where it comes from, or to the consequences of how weak we are if, we are not energy independant and energy strong. At least that's what we were doing untill gas went upwards of three dollars a gallon?

They have Barack's obvious inexperience.
They have Barrack campaigning in foreign countries.
They have Barrack accepting campaign donations from foreigners.
They have the Democrat's stone-walling the energy bill.
They have Pelosi trying to run the House as a dictatorship.
They have the Democratic majority Congress being incompetant and getting virtually nothing accomplished this year.

They are simply too scared, incompetant, or stupid to use these issues. I don't really know what they are thinking about. It's almost as if they view 2008 as "their turn" just like Bob Dole did and Al Gore did and Hillary did.

c5then, I disagree

I have to disagree that the Congress has done virtually nothing.  Afterall, the 110th Congress has passed 855 bills that has done more to hurt hurt the American people then to help (admittedly that is my perception).  Plus they have nearly destroyed the entire idea of democratic process in the process: From CNSNews.com

"a non-partisan study released on June 10 by the government’s Congressional Research Service (CRS), which indicates that 855 of the 911 bills passed by the Senate of the 110th Congress have been streamlined by Democratic Party leadership with a procedural tactic known as Unanimous Consent (UC), which requires no debate or even a vote."

McCain

McCain is being handed the election on a silver platter.  If he doesn't win by a landslide then all the GOP leaders need to step down and the party needs to re-invent itself.

How this affects the

How this affects the election is going to be very dicey.  If gasoline prices level off or go lower, the public will become complacent again over the causes of the run up and take a very important issue away from the GOP.  The public seems to suffer from ADHD with their short attention span and gullibility to lib propaganda.  So the big question is will 90 days be a long enough period without record breaking price levels in gasoline for the Dems to once again distract the public with their glittering costumes performing their song and dance routine?  It seems to me Pelosi's shunning of the drilling ban debate is definitely a run the clock out tactic and they the Dems have apparently agreed to a game plan that is designed to lull the public into complacency until Nov 4th.

The GOP needs to keep the issue front and center and also expose the fallacy of alternative energy, especially wind energy

MoveOn plans to ‘push back hard’ against House GOP
By Klaus Marre
Posted: 08/04/08 10:48 PM [ET]

Liberal group MoveOn.org is urging its supporters to “push back hard” against House Republicans who have been seeking to pressure Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to allow a vote on offshore drilling.

[...]

“Republicans have been escalating their attacks on [...] the Democrats over oil drilling, and we need to push back hard,” the group said in an e-mail to supporters, asking them to come to a 4 p.m. rally at the Capitol.

“Speaker Pelosi blocked their plan because it won't help lower gas prices—but it will line the pockets of Big Oil executives, the same people donating millions of dollars to Republicans,” the e-mail said.

[...]

“We’ve invited the media, and having a good crowd is critical to show them that voters don’t want oil industry gimmicks—they want real solutions like alternative energy to solve our energy crisis,” the e-mail said.

[...]

after all what has she got

after all what has she got to lose now - her fantastic approval rating or something:)?!!

If this topic has been covered here, my apologies.

John McCain favors offshore drilling, but he thinks the decision to drill should be up to the states. If the following poll is accurate, California support for offshore drilling is razor-thin (and I would argue non-existent if the price of gasoline continues downward). And our Republican Governor opposes offshore drilling….

http://www.sfgate.co...

So, which states will support offshore drilling if the U.S. Congress is allowed to vote thumbs-up on drilling? Because of the existence of numerous platforms off the California coast, the production timeline here might be relatively short……. but I think offshore drilling in California is just a dream.

Which states will not be cowed into submission by the environmental demonstrations to come?

I have visions of the MSM filling their pages and our screens with photographs of dead/dying, tar-covered seals and shore birds….. right around election time.

What would you ask the candidates?

I'm sick to death of the media, and the questions they ask of the candidates and the way they run the debates.

Since the constitutional powers accorded to the President of the United States do not include "solving all problems" and "Making your wildest dreams come true", one could sorta look at what the president's powers are and ask some relative questions.

For instance, what would the candidate be looking for in a Treasury Secretary? Secretary of State? Judicial appointments? Ambassadors?

The question the news media hates the most...

Senator, what single Federal government program do you wish to entirely eliminate?? Not "cut." Not "administer more responsibly." Not "change." Eliminate. Entirely. 100%. Name a boondoggle you'd kill.

It must be a good question if I'm not able to answer it, either! I'd probably want to kill the IRS out of all those, if I could only take out one, since killing the IRS might effectively kill off a few of the others. It's a fun fantasy, that's for sure.

Pollution causes Hurricanes...

Read it and weep!

"In order to maintain US lifestyles America must maintain Economic EFFICIENCY much moreso than creating economic GROWTH via population growth.

But economic efficiency is NOT just about a wide variety of independent sustainable heat SOURCES. Its also about maintaining viable and sustainable heat SINKS, particularly rivers lakes and coastal oceans. This is just very basic Thermodynamics. Coastal oceans and rivers are visibly gummed up as seen at ports like Ft Myers in the GOM and will not allow further economic efficiency, no matter how many new heat sources Mr Obama may come up with.

The following prognosis for the rest of the 2008 hurricane season gives some insight into this economic EFFICIENCY problem.

Sorry about no SST/SHS map links as Dotearth is again not posting with them.

!!!! RECCE hypothesis, Edouard and future developments in the GOM !!!!

Edouard hit the Texas coast clockwise around the maximal heat gradient formed by the big heat retaining wastewater plumes coming from Pt Arthur and Lake Charles. This is how RECCEs like Edouard behave.

Given that premise, what happens next?

Comparing the heat maps for Aug 4 2005, 2007 & 2008 gives some useful insights:

Note that 2008 has basin wide ocean heat levels below 2007 and well below 2005.

Further, Aug 4 is well below July 25 2008 but above July 25 2007. Heat levels have actually dropped this year in concert with recent observed retractions of wastewater plumes from the major ports thusfar mentioned. This is quite remarkable and does point to deliberate efforts to hold back waste emissions in order to stall incoming hurricanes

That means the rest of this hurricane season will not appreciably affect the GOM IF wastewaters continue to be held back till September 10th. I will keep posting progress untill then.

However, Ft Myers and Goodland are still a problem and if emissions are not retained fully, a hurricane could develop in the SW GOM or the West Caribbean and run straight into Tampa along the Nthn edge of the combined plume from Myers and Goodland.

As for the rest of the Atlantic basin, it will be difficult to get any major hurricanes now as basin wide ocean heat levels are so far below 2007 levels & 2007 was a mild season.

One further note: the Bahamas and Andros Is are both heavy water polluters and will incur hurricane events as the season progresses. More on this later."

On McCain’s energy policy: “his dirty secret is that, as a believer that global warming is a dangerous crisis, McCain should want gas prices to be high.”
