For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Was Pelosi's performance on "This Week" yesterday the worst you've ever seen from a major elected official?

For those that missed it, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was George Stephanopoulos's guest on "This Week" Sunday. Not only did she come across as knowing absolutely nothing about the energy markets as well as the oil industry, she presented herself more as a freshman representative that had never been in front of the camera instead of the most powerful member of Congress that happens to be second in succession to the presidency.

All things considered, was this the worst performance you've ever seen by a major elected official on a political talk show?

Nazi Pelosi

This act of defiance shows that she and her party are the true fascists in America. IT CAN HAPPEN HERE. And on Friday, it DID happen here. They don't care about working class Americans. And they are living up to the 13% approval rating.

Mr.L

Wow...it was 9....are they

Wow...it was 9....are they all the way up to 13 now?? I wonder what cause that surge!

Regarding the performance, Her Speakerness spoke, and removed all doubt.

I wonder if...

Cindy Sheehan will be successful getting on the ballot in San Francisco so she can challenge for Pelosi's seat. I'd like to see that.

RE; 9

You're right I think it may have been 9%. In any case, that's a small percentage who would agree with her actions on Friday.
Mr.L

Doh!

9% it was. The democrat controlled Congress has made history and we should all be proud.

like that + or - 4% makes a difference

If you ask a liberal or MSM it is 13% if you ask the truth it is 9%

like that + or - 4% makes a difference

According to RCP averages

The Democrat-controlled congress has a 19.3% approval rating [at the moment], yet 48.7% say they prefer a generic Democrat congressional candidate over a Republican one.

Does that make any sense to anyone?

It is attributable to a number of things:

-The RINO culture that is trying to either maintain or grab ahold of seats this election

-The fact that the majority of the electorate believes that Bush is simply "refusing to admit he made a mistake on invading Iraq" and is keeping the troops there for that reason

-The fact that the majority of the electorate believes that the only thing needed to "correct" Bush's "mistake" is the election of enough Democrats to override the veto of any anti-Iraq-war legislation.

I don't know about the worst...

There are so many to choose from, that I have a hard time calling it the worst. It may have been the most offensive and maddening performance I've ever witnessed though. With her stubborn refusal to answer a simple question, she came off as either stupid, crazy, incompetent, or just plain corrupt. Maybe all of the above.

I can only conclude that the Dems have two reasons for the stand they've taken against drilling. First, they're beholden to the environmentalist lobby. And secondly, they're betting on the American people being so ignorant and uninformed(courtesy of the Drive-bys) that they blame this on Bush and the GOP.

In other words, they're screwing over the American people for political reasons which is unconscionable. My only hope is that with 3 months til the election and the GOP finally standing up to the Dems, that this ploy will backfire spectacularly on Pelosi, Reid, and Co. and costs them bigtime at the polls.

I choose A and C

Stupid and Incompetent.

and of course it's Bush's fault!

Uh, Your Speakerness, then why didn't gas prices get this high during Bush's first term????

Yeah, I know....logic is a dirty trick!

reasons for no vote on oil

Don't forget they don't want to have any controversial votes where Sen. Obama's vote or lack of vote could be used against him.  Afterall this all about power and not the American people.

It's going to be nice to have another Summer holiday, although another round of gift giving may strain my budget.  Do you think there will be church services to celebrate the birth, or just a pilgrimage to the birthplace?

Can't or Barry

There would be a pilgrimage to his birthplace but no one knows where to go.

Helen Thomas

I don't know where you get your information, but Helen Thomas has to be older than 88.  She was reporting on the Lincoln Assassination.  Her article "John Wilkes Booth - Duped by the Bush Dynasty" almost won her a Pulitzer.

This performance shows

This performance shows a person totally out-of-touch with mainstream America and pushing an agenda that has nothing in it for the average American.  How is tapping the SOR going to lower gas prices?  There's 58 days of oil there.  She proposing taking ten days worth.  Are we going to leave it depleted after we tap it. or are we going to refill to capacity?  Refilling it will put the government in competition with refineries to purchase oil.  Competition drives up prices.  No gain.  How are all these alternative, proposed energy sources going to get to market any sooner the additional domestic oil produced by drilling here and drilling now?  Why will it take ten years to get that oil into the supply pipeline?  ANWR is only a few miles from an actual existing pipeline.  You tow a rig offshore, flood the legs, level the platform and start drilling.  How will waiting to start drilling shorten the delivery process?  The Democrats want you at home, poor, and dependent on them.

Roger, I'm starting to think Barack may be as smart as Al Gore.  He can change positions in his plans to cater to whoever he happens to be talking at by just changing the website's contents and intoning, "Review the plan on my website.".  That way, he's never caught on TV actually taking a position and can be all things to all people all the time.  Genius.  If you only go to the website to check a position once after a speech, you'll probably see what he ants you to see.  In this day and age of technology, someone familiar with IT could probably determine from your internet addresss what region of the country you're from and direct you to a site tailored to core beliefs from that region.

As to what make the Goracle such a genius, just look how one of the biggest carbon footprints in the country is making a fortune trading in 'green' companies by forming a trading company and then going out and creating a need for said company with alarmist movies full of BS and an adoring press that ignores every transgression and spreads the 'word' like it's gospel.

Animal nuts are not really

Shhhh! We Can't Bother Her.

She has a bigger mission than addressing the needs of the American people and those "children" that will be entering the workforce in the coming decade.

She and her cohorts have to make President Bush (and Republicans) look as bad as possible.

If she gains more power through an Obama victory, there are two possible outcomes, regarding drilling:

1) The Democrat-controlled Congress and Senate will OK some drilling, so they (and Obama) can take the credit; or

2) They will continue to stall drilling approvals and instead blame "failed (sabotaged) Republican energy policies" and "obscene oil-company profits".  And the MSM will help them.

And while engaging in tax-and-punish policies that will produce no new oil, they will push forward their efforts to disarm the American populace to weaken the effects of future tax riots (and gasoline-price riots) that our then-grown children may engage in.

A weak America is not good for the world (and some of "the world" knows it).

yes, somebody's losing it

Yesterday, Pelosi again referred to proposing a "Use it or lose it" policy on leases to increase the oil companies' interest in drilling on those leases (as if they need an enticement at the current prices).

It's already the law! Shouldn't the Speaker (chief House lawmaker) know this?

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.
- George Bernard Shaw, 1944

I saw this a few minutes

I saw this a few minutes ago while trying to figure out how "use it or lose it" policies would bring oil to the refineries faster than new off-shore drilling.  Look down inside the article.  As a person who likes to see nature preserved, my initial thought was why can't the gas company leave the old growth and drill in at an angle to extract the gas.  That is what the oild company wanted to do, but it wasn't good enough.  I wonder if this falls under the 'going to lose it' area, because this company can't use their lease.

Steph had the bad performance, Nancy just did what Nancy does

Because he could have said"let's see, "big oil" doesnt want to drill in areas they already have...for a commodity that they can make money on??but they do want to drill off shore? Do they, or do they not want to make money, and if they are so greedy, why do you suppose they aren't drilling in the places you claim has oil"?

Naturally the answer is, that unlike gov't programs, private business only works where it makes fiscal sense.

Yeah Nancy, Exxon would rather let the Arabs drill, rather than tapping into domestic which is cheaper to drill for and less transportation. Why didnt he call her on the strategic reserve...a miniscule amount, or on the fact that markets look to the future, as soon as Bush lifted the restriction, oil dropped...he has so many chances to nail her.

Face the Music

Bob Schieffer offered a perfect example for why the media is so disrespected. The media creates the environment for a problem, provokes the problem, profits from the problem, and then sanctimoniously blames everyone else for the problem.

  • Case in point: On Sunday morning, I caught the last few minutes of Face the Nation. Schieffer was discussing the McCain ads with David Brooks, insinuating that McCain had gone too far. The McCain ads actually accused Obama of a messiah complex! Then they played a clip from the ad, starting with the scene of Charlton Heston as Moses parting the Red Sea. Then the ad continued as if the messiah charge came completely out of nowhere.

  • Schieffer and his CBS editors didn’t show what came immediately before the Moses clip: it was Obama proclaiming that history will look back at his election as the moment when the oceans stopped rising. Come on … Oceans stopped rising because they elected Obama!? That’s what made the Moses clip funny – it was a mocking reply to Obama’s over-the-top claim of his own importance.  But CBS cut that out, and started with the Moses clip, which gave the viewers the idea that McCain was just hurling a charge out of the blue.

  • Throughout the primaries, neither Obama nor Hillary was ever examined closely. They received enormous coverage, and Obama came away without a scratch. The media instead raved about his speaking skills (but only his teleprompter skills, because in conversation or debate, he stammers like Mel Tillis), and then the media mentioned the tingle Obama gives them. When Obama announced his trip, the media gave him the presidential treatment. So now it’s pretty ridiculous that Schieffer is shocked – where did McCain get the idea that Obama is treated as the messiah?

Then to close the show with his editorial comment, Schieffer sanctimoniously complained that the campaign started off with such promise. It could have been such a dignified summer, but now we’re come down to ads about Paris Hilton. The fact that McCain was using TV to counter the media’s promotion of Obama was the point of the Paris Hilton ads.

Look in the mirror, Bob. Look in the mirror.

One can only hope...

...that as we speak the RNC is putting together the mother of all Congressional campaign ads showing the cluelessness of the Queen Bee and the need to put the GOP back in charge.

But I'm not holding my breath.

The top five most infuriating political performances of the modern era:

1) It depends on the meaning of the word "is"

2) This is a vast right-wing conspiracy

3) Pelosi talking to Stephanopoulus

4) Harry Reid attacking Rush Limbaugh

5) My grandma is a typical white person

Maybe not list worthy...

...but mind boggling to say the least. From Fox News Sunday:

WALLACE: ... if I may, McCain,
it seemed to me and, I think, to a lot of people, tapped into a growing
issue, and that is the issue of whether Obama is arrogant and acting as
if he's already president.

I
want to show you what he said to House Democrats in a closed caucus
this week. Let's put it up on the screen. This is Obama talking to
them, according to someone who was in the meeting. "This is the moment
the world is waiting for. I have become a symbol of the possibility of
America returning to our best traditions."

Senator Daschle, wouldn't a little modesty serve Obama well?

DASCHLE:
Chris, first of all, that's a third-hand report. And I've never heard
Barack Obama used word "I," never. In all the time I've been with him,
he has not used the word "I." He uses "we."

WALLACE: "I am a citizen of America, I'm a citizen of the world?"

DASCHLE: That's not what he said. I doubt very much...

WALLACE: Well, that's what he said in Berlin. I mean, we can get the tape of that, sir.

Praetorian Guard

Does anyone remember Obama's idea to create a civilian force that was just as large and just as well equipped and trained as the Army?

I'm curious about a few things on this:

  • Why do we need them?

  • Where will we put them?

  • How will we pay for them?

The reason the Roman emperors were able to rule absoutely was because of the Preatorian Guard (forgive me if I've misspelled it).   This guard was tens of thousands strong and well armed.  They never left Rome.  The Army was off fighting battles throughout the known world and there was no one to enforce the laws passed by the Senate.  The Preatorian Guard was absoutely loyal to Cesar and that was it.  They did what he said and no one else.

This civilian guard force seems to be representative of this Preatorian Guard for Obama.

Just a thought.

Since government is coercion, politics is largely the exercise of deception regarding the intended use of coercion - George Orwell

Bean Man

Obama mentioned this idea in a speech he gave July 2. You can read about it here.

-He says we need it because the police/National Guard are not enough to protect us. Apparently instead of simply training more police he thinks a citizen brigade is a better idea - you know, since that way they'll blend in with the rest of us to catch people faster.

-They will live in their homes next to everyone else and you'll have no way of knowing who is in on it until they jump on you for something.

-They'll be paid with federal money of course. You know, Obama will tax extra money from your paycheck for the priviledge of having an undercover cop spy on your neighborhood.

Forget Rome. This idea is currently rampant in places like Cuba and Venezuela. As you've correctly noted, only folks loyal to the government are chosen and they're generally given lots of leeway to hassle protestors.

Pelosi/Obama Timing

Does anyone else think it's just a little too convenient that BO decided to "move" ever so slightly toward favoring some kind of offshore drilling precisely at the time when Nancy BOtox adjourned Congress for the summer? Obama felt assured there would be no vote he would actually have to cast on the issue. He could therefore offer his "pronouncement from on high" regarding drilling.

It's also worth noting the language in the "pronouncement" was so full of weasel words and caveats that his actual position hasn't changed a bit. This is much akin to his old trick of voting "present" in the Illinois Legislature to avoid any paper trail on an issue.

Yes.

I actually made a reference to how "convenient" it seemed, but not quite for the same reason.

We are having our 1960s fuel oil furnace replaced with propane.  I will, however, set it up outside and run it for $3 an hour.  Call them carbon replacers.  Plants love carbon, we need plants, the GW Crazies are trying to kill us all by killilng plants.  Not only does our furnace produce life giving amounts of carbon, it also spews plenty of soot which could help create a smog like cloud which we have just learned diminishes the greenhouse effect.

I was reading Time Mag this

I was reading Time Mag this AM in the doctor's office, and came upon this oxymoronic (for lack of a better word) survey.

Apparently:

80% of the people surveyed thought that individuals were responsible for their own financial security.

However:

77% thought that the government should offer subsidies to help people buy health insurance.

67% thought that there should be more paid maternity and family leave.

And 70% thought that government should subsidize child care.

Government money tree?

That certainly explains how tax and spend politicians keep getting re-elected.

This reminds me of hearing people excited about getting their 'government' rebate check.

It always amazes me that these questions are presented as the 'government providing/offering/subsidizing, etc', instead of the more correct 'taxpayers providing/offering/subsiding'.  It's obvious why politicians prefer to use this language but the establishment media engaging in this deception is deplorable.

Billions of reasons to lower taxes

How many zeros in a billion?

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases (based on current year of 2008):

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1976.

B. A billion minutes ago Christianity was still a fledgling religion in Rome.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no one walked the earth on two feet.

E.  A billion dollars ago was only 4 hours and 10 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

Quote of the Day:

"We make money the old fashioned way. We print it."
-- Art Rolnick, former Chief Economist, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank

Subject: How big is the money supply?

The value of your money depends on the amount of money in circulation.
Is it possible for you, as a layman, to learn and understand how large
the money supply is, and whether it's growing or shrinking?

Probably not. There are many measurements of the money supply, and
there seems to be no consensus about which measurements are best. These
measurements go by the names M-zero, M1, M2, M3, and MZM. There's even
something called the "True Money Supply," devised by Murray Rothbard,
and reported at the website of the Ludwig von Mises Institute.

The "True Money Supply" page will also give you numbers for M1, M2, M3,
and MZM, but the numbers are only updated through April, and the M1
measurement, for some reason, is only current through February of 2006.

Well, you could try the Federal Reserve instead. They ought to know,
right? Well, there are problems there too. The Fed doesn't report M3
anymore, which some people think is the best measurement. The Fed also
provides two different numbers for M1 and M2, one seasonally adjusted,
and one not, without explaining what the seasonal adjustment entails.
Worse still . . .

If you look for reports on M-zero (the narrowest definition of money),
or MZM on the Fed site, you may have difficulty. I did. I couldn't find
summary reports for these measurements, though presumably they could be
constructed from the raw data that's available in various places on the
Fed website.

You could try a site called
EconoMagic.com, which aggregates all sorts of economic data, but if you
compare the numbers you'll find there with the numbers the Fed reports
for M1 and M2, they're different.

The numbers for M1 and M2 reported at the "True Money Supply" site are
also different from both the Fed site and the EconoMagic site. And
we would bet that if you paid the money to subscribe to the
ShadowStatistics site you would find yet another set of totally
different numbers.

Well, if you really wanted to understand what's going on, perhaps you
could consult an expert. That seems reasonable until you stop to think
about it. All of the money supply numbers found in various places are
all concocted by experts, and they all disagree. Do you need another
expert to tell you which experts are providing the best money supply
measurements?

It gets worse.

As we understand it, most of the various money supply measurements are
actually a mixture of two things: the number of monetary units
(dollars), and the amount of credit available. Basic monetary expansion
happens when new dollars are created by the Fed. Credit expansion
happens when you deposit money in a bank. The bank lends some of this
money to others, while keeping some as a reserve. This creates a
default risk. If too many people try to withdraw their money at the
same time, the bank won't be able to pay.

Essentially, banks create competing claims to money. You can withdraw
money from your checking or savings account at any time, even though
much of this money is being used by the people who borrowed it from the
bank. If too many people try to withdraw too much money at the same
time the Fed will have to ride to the rescue, perhaps by creating new
money to keep the banks solvent.

What this means is that some parts of the various money supply numbers
are actually measuring the size of competing claims to money. The way
we understand it the basic money supply and the size of the competing
claims to money (credit) both have an impact on prices, but not in the
same way. Expanding the basic money supply can cause a general rise in
prices, while expanding credit (creating competing claims to money)
tends to bid up prices in certain economic sectors, such as
manufacturing or housing. Credit expansion is especially dangerous in
terms of causing booms and busts.

So where can you go to find distinct measurements of money and credit?

Well, Murray Rothbard was trying to address this question by creating
the "True Money Supply." His approach, as we understand it, weeds out
much of the credit aspects of the various measurements, but if you want
to figure out what's going on with the credit situation you'll have to
get out your calculator and dive into the raw data provided by the Fed.
Good luck.

This whole subject is a complete mess. It's an indictment of both the
government and the economics profession. It's also frustrating to us
here at Downsize DC. We like to find ways to present you with clear and
simple information, eliminating jargon and confusing detail. But when
it comes to the supply of money and credit, we just can't do that for
you, yet.

So what do we do when we want you to communicate with Congress about
the Federal Reserve's manipulations of money and credit? How do we
define what those manipulations are, so that you can use the
information in your messages to Congress? The best we can do is to use
the Fed's own numbers, even though they conflate money and credit as if
they were the same thing.

The Fed has just issued its report for June.

Here again, there is confusion. The seasonally adjusted numbers show an
$18.5 billion increase in M1 in June, while there was a $1 billion
decrease in M2. The non-adjusted numbers show an $11.7 billion increase
in M1, and a $17.4 billion increase in M2.

What are we to make of this? The money supply and credit are probably
both expanding. This means higher prices, devalued savings, and more
risks of booms and busts and credit defaults.

What can be done about this? Congressman Ron Paul probably has the best
answer. Removing the tangles between the Federal Reserve and the
banking system would be very complex, but making Federal Reserve Notes
(dollars) compete with free market forms of money, such as gold, would
not be complex. Competition would serve to limit the Fed's power to
manipulate the supply of money and credit.

Congressman Paul has two bills designed to make this happen: HR 2756,
the "Honest Money Act," and HR 4683, the "Free Competition in Currency
Act." Please ask your elected representatives to co-sponsor both of
these bills. You could mention the M1 and M2 numbers provided above in
your personal comments. You can send your message here.

Please also consider making a contribution to further our work. You can do so here.

I'm curious.  IYHO is money being printed when a VISA or Mastercard increases the APR on your credit card from 8% to 29.9%?

For the official definition of "money"

It's hard to say. I'm not good at thinking about it, because my personal definition of money isn't historically challenged fiat paper notes, it's more like "gold or silver." Those 2 metals aren't that easy to create with the wave of a wand, and coincidentally the fans of obese government don't like either one very much. America's Founding Fathers were some pretty smart guys, if only we'd listen to them. Anyway, with other basic aspects of the money supply like M1 so impossible to determine, I'm not sure if it even matters what credit card companies do.
