For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama shifting his position on drilling?
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said today he would be willing to open Florida's coast for more oil drilling if it meant winning approval for broad energy changes. "My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post. "If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done," Obama said.
Is this a smart move given the current price of oil and gas, or another shameless flip-flop from a guy that really doesn't stand for anything but "change" anyway?

It's clearly a smart move on his part.
August 2, 2008 - 09:30 ET by sarcasmoMcCain moved to the left of his own party on various issues in the past, but he still managed to win when Romney dropped out early. I think Obama knew, once Democrat primaries were over, that he'd have to move to the right in order to credibly run against "a maverick." Drilling was an ideal issue for a well timed flip flop.

I understand your sickness of Norton. I suffered the same affliction a year ago and took AVG and then Bit Defender for a test spin and have finally settled in with Trend Micro.
All of my choices had been via recommendations from others.
I had been quite happy with AVG but had a hassle with their outsourced tech support when I tried to upgrade from the free trial version to a fee-based version so I moved on to Bit Defender.
I was equally happy with Bit Defender until I read the results of a recent scan. Three trojan viruses were detected but Bit Defender stated they could not remove/quarantine one of the viruses (I believe because it was embedded in an archived file).
I then called my very computer savvy son-in-law techy who recommended running a program from Trend Micro called Housecall. HouseCall found the virus Bit Defender was unable to automatically remove. HouseCall was able to remove the virus without my having to manually search for the infected archive file as Bit Defender had offered as the only solution.
I was very impressed with HouseCall so out of gratitude/loyalty I am now using Micro Trend. My Operating system is way faster than when using Norton (as was the case with the other anti-virus software I mentioned previously) and so far I have been virus free and pleased with Micro Trend's service. In all fairness I have only been using this new software for a short while but so far so good.
Good luck,
Hugh
Hugh,
August 2, 2008 - 10:31 ET by Indiana JoeI have Trend Micro also. And I got it on recommendation. About the only problem I would point to is that a full scan takes about 3 hours on my machine. But I just schedule those for down-time, and it's no problem.
I should point out that I'm using an ancient machine (about 5 years old?) with a lot of junk on the HD. 80 GB is almost full, which I was told would NEVER happen, lol. Been planning on getting a new one when finances permit.

August 2, 2008 - 17:09 ET by HumblepieWould always spend the money and update my Defender Pro. It worked wonderful for years. Lately it would tell me about virus's found but couldn't isolate and delete them. This year switched to Trend Micro and love it. It will go after any and all no matter where they are. Just like Indiana above, I've found it does take a little time for complete scans. But, you can schedule your scan times and select types of scan (full, partial, etc). With automatic daily updates and a teachable "spam" email program, you have more leeway/control over it.
During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.
Also use Trend Micro here
August 2, 2008 - 17:34 ET by celatorAlso use Trend Micro here and it works very well for me. Norton's was a nightmare program which seemed to embed itself in all sorts of odd places on my system, and often just plain gummed up the computer. I used to have CA and it worked fine also, but I am very happy with TM, so I stick with it.

I use Avast! from ALWIL Software
August 2, 2008 - 12:15 ET by TjexciteI got a new computer w/vista and McAfee for 3 months free. I was OK but the computer was slower than expected for semi-new (in commuter terms that means only 2 months off the line and now old) With the 3 months over I opted for the free Avast. There was so much improvement in the speed it was like new. It found at least 3 Trojans that McAfee missed. It has a browser scanner that checks every page one opens. It finds bad stuff that come with the page. It is updated daily. The one downfall is there is no automatic time driven scan. It does have a screen saver add-on that scans whenever the saver is up which is cool. It also has a boot scan that will scan the whole HD before the OS loads and with it any anti-virus killer that will disable the scanner.
I have used both the free and pro version (for free and legal) of AVG. Not worth paying for as the only thing I found different was that one could custom an auto scan on what folder to scan.

Baracks campaign only works as a cult of personality since he has little else to run on, and to have the facade of "Messiah of change" torn off to reveal just another hack politician will destroy any chance he has. I propose that each and every one of us here at NB take time to educate people about Obama and the truth. It may sound silly, but I would like to see all of us pledge to tell one new person a day. It matters not if it's in person, on the phone, email, blogs, or whatever form of communication we can think of, just get it in our heads that we must help educate people about the real Obama.

August 2, 2008 - 10:15 ET by jefflebowskiThe Democrats have a tremendously vulnerable flank in Pelosi's anti-drilling stance. While the Dims have to kiss environmenalist butt, more and more people stop caring about caribou as they have to struggle to feed their families. This is severely stupid for the Dims as it is truly anti-American. To tell us to inflate tires and get tune ups and turn the AC up to 80 is plain ridiculous and makes the Dims look so. They truly are pathetic.
I have said it before, Obama will be to the right of McCain on nearly every topic before the election. He knows he has the black vote and the unwashed left vote wrapped up. He will try to con the middle (a la Clinton) into believing he really is a moderate.
McCain's ham-handed (to date) campaign looks awfully clumsy. The best bet for McCain is for rappers and preachers to keep running their huge mouths about Obama and the black thing and continue to alienate the union member white Democrats.

Speaking of Obama
August 2, 2008 - 10:14 ET by acumenChild Junior - The Hidden Years
Little is revealed of this hidden life of the child Barry. The story begins in the humble village of Honolulu in the year of 1960.
A devout believer in Allah named Barack Obama, later to be known as the Senior, had recently left his wife in a far-away land to search for a mythical place called utopia. Not being able to find this utopia, the Senior became angry with Allah. In his bitter state, the Senior quickly lost any remaining faith and disowned Allah for the rest of his days on earth, choosing instead to carry the title of atheist.
Now also in this same humble village of Honolulu lived a whimsical young maiden named Stanley who was fondly called Ann.
Ann met the Senior in a Russian language class they both attended at the well known center of leftist thought, the University of Hawaii's East West Centre. Ann shared the Senior's Marxist views and soon became enchanted by this man from exotic lands.
Not discouraged by the Senior's still married state, Ann at the age of seventeen yielded to her desires for the Senior and soon gave birth to a baby boy. Ann named the child Barack Hussein Obama Junior in an effort to please the Senior. However, still haunted by the ongoing marriage to his first wife coupled with wishing to avoid more scandal and also troubled by his yet unfulfilled desire to find utopia the Senior was not pleased.
The Senior had a dream, where the worldly angel of subconscious self-preservation revealed that he should go into exile to the barren land of Harvard leaving Ann and Junior behind.
Ann next met another fellow leftist student from another far away land at the East West Centre named Lolo Soetoro. Unlike the Senior, Lolo was an unmarried man who still found favor with Allah. Taking advantage of Lolo's unmarried state Ann and Lolo were legally permitted to marry and in time did.
Ann, Lolo and Junior took up residence in Indonesia where Junior’s half-sister Maya Soetoro–Ng was born.
At the age of ten, Junior was sent back to the humble village of Honolulu to live with Ann's parents.
Many mysteries remain in the early hidden life of Junior. If all the mysteries of Junior's hidden life were written, the whole world could not contain all of the books. But it was not to be as Junior's hidden years came to receive a media pass.
To be continued....

In reality they told him...This is what we are going to HAVE to do.
SOBama is THE PUPPET not the puppet master!
Mort Kondrake made an interesting comment.
August 3, 2008 - 06:36 ET by Par for the CourseOn last Fridays Special Report with Brit Hume, Fred Barnes, Mort Kondracke and Charles Krauthammer were talking about Barack Obama's "Palm Beach Post" interview where Obama said "We have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought out drilling strategy without significant environmental damage."
One of the comments Kondrake made, regarding Harry Reid not allowing a vote on offshore drilling was:
Sounds like Obama may have thrown his Senate colleagues under the bus.
Obama has introduced a new
August 2, 2008 - 18:13 ET by johnbarryObama has introduced a new word to the English language. To barack means to flip-flop.
He is prepared to say or do anything to get elected. He changes policy positions on a daily basis. He makes it up as he goes along. He has no coherent energy policy. McCain should go one step further and support drilling in the Artic. Obama would much prefer to see Americans on bicycles rather than in cars.
If Americans elect extreme leftie Obama they will face the same problems as Europeans now face. Even when conservative governments are elected in place of outgoing Socialist Governments they face horrendous levels of bureaucracy and high taxation. In countries such as France, Germany Italy it is practically impossible to cut levels of taxation and bureaucracy bequeathed by the Socialists.
If the necessary decisions were taken the resultant unpopularity would wipe out conservative parties. So these parties can only work around the edges.
America must not fall for the Socialist charms of Obama.
Obama's Gusher of Bull****
August 2, 2008 - 19:03 ET by BarkerYesterday, Obama said drilling is a "gimmick". Today, it's his policy. Drilling has always been just a part of the energy solutions, not the be-all and end-all.
The only thing consistent about Obama is the amount of BS he spews forth on a daily basis.
Socialized medicine warning for my US friends
August 3, 2008 - 05:14 ET by Jack BauerI'm posting in full this post on a blog called Biased-BBC.
I think Americans need to be aware of the realities of a Socialized national heathcare system that is government run/mandated/directed/operated... of whatever you like to call it.
This is what happens to the old in a system in which age is one of the predominant factors in healthcare rationing. If this was TED KENNEDY in the UK, he would be DEAD already with his condition because he would not even have had an MRI yet because the OLD are last in line.
I am not naive enough to think this could not happen in the US too... however remember this when a polician waxes lyrical about "national" healthcare.
Read it and weep.
wow Jack
August 3, 2008 - 10:41 ET by candanceGovernment healthcare looks more and more like communism every day.
Thanks for sharing.
Heard it all before
August 3, 2008 - 10:57 ET by dboJack,
Ditto in Canada. I'm afraid these stories are a dime a dozen. The system killed my Mother-in-law 6 years ago, a great woman. The system is even worse than most Americans could possibly imagine. What's unbelievable is that most Canadians think it's a great system. Every federal election since I can remember is fought over health care. I suspect the British system is doing better than ours since there has been at least some attempt to modernize there. We're still using our 1967dinosaur here. Please America, plug your nose if you must. Vote McCain.
I finally solved who george

AV and firewall
August 3, 2008 - 19:23 ET by danhathttp://www.comodo.co...
They offer free firewall and AV. I have not used the AV but am using the firewall.
AVG is on 4 out of 6 of my computers. The other two pc's are a mac and a linux box so no real need, since they are low on the hit list if most cyber attackers.

Normally I don't root for the disease. But in your case I am willing to make and exception.
