For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: as we all mourn the death of Tony Snow, we should also say a prayer for the father of modern cardiovascular surgery:

Surgeon Michael DeBakey, whose ground-breaking heart transplants and coronary bypass operations made him one of the giants of 20th century medicine, has died at age 99...In a career that spanned more than seven decades, DeBakey developed a number of new surgical procedures that now are standard in treating heart ailments and led many to consider him the father of modern cardiovascular surgery. His best known innovation was the now-common coronary bypass operation for clogged arteries, which he first performed in 1964, using leg veins to bypass blocked or damaged areas between the aorta and coronary arteries.

Do yourself a favor and read the whole article. This was an EXTRAORDINARY man whose work has saved the lives of literally millions of people. Rest in Peace, Doctor, and thank you.

Tony Snow

I just found out about this after I woke up this morning. Tony Snow was a class act and will be missed.

Very sad day...

I heard the news while listening to the radio this morning while helping the wife with her Horses. Both of us stopped what we were doing to say a prayer for Tony and his family, and both of us shed tears for him.

God will have some great conversations with Tony.

Truly one of the good guys!

Tony you will be sorely missed.

We sometimes use the word

We sometimes use the word recklessly, but Dr. Debakey was truly an amazing man. Fascinating that he developed his dexterity by sewing as a child!

As you noted, think of the millions - literally millions - of lives he helped save.

My father had a quintuple bypass 7 years ago. Without Dr. DeBakey's help, I doubt he would still be with us today.

Good luck to you, DontFeedTheTrolls!

Christmas Cards

We used to get Christmas cards from Dr. Debakey when I was growing up.  I didn't realize he was such a big deal until I was in high school and then I went looking for the cards again (my family being pack rats we tended to keep those things).  After I couldn't find any I figured they must have been the kind of Christmas card you got from your dentist, pre-printed signature, generic message.

I found out later when I did find one that he actually knew and worked with my mother.   There was a guy I would have liked to have met.

can anyone run a lexis nexis search

i'm just curious how often he has been mention in american culture by the msm. now compare that to brittany spears, amy winehouse, or whatever other celebrity who is harboring infectious diseases in their crotch like a petri dish. and you wonder why i am so vocal in my distaste for crap like american idol and such. the part of the dumbing down of america that i hate the most and i enjoy using to piss off the ignorant sheep whenever i can. it's obvious what the media prefers to prioritiz, the things that distract the public the most.

lunaticcringeradio

harboring infectious diseases in their crotch like a petri dish?

I don't have a subscription to lexusnexis, so i do not know. I see nothing wrong with the msm focussing on AI and Britney Spears. If the public was not interested, they would not show it as often.

LCR

LCR,

Good question. LN shows about 1,000 results for the good doctor. Many were from 1996 when he flew to Moscow to assist in Boris Yeltsin's bypass surgery.

So, he's gotten press, but not in a while given his age. ns

I agree lunaticcring - it's disgusting

And we are going to have our first American Idol President now as a result of it. The media does contribute to dumbing down American rather than informing. They have even turned politics into a reality T.V. show of the most sleazy nature. Everything is about PC personality and nothing is about a true examination of issues.

I hate reality T.V. - it's so unrealistic but gullible people think it's the way the world and relationships should work. Now it has carried over into Presidential elections and it's so sad. I think the sensational media and the reality T.V. shows prey on the worst instincts of people instead of the kindness and goodness in most people. It's really sad.

Sometimes I wish television would be banned all together. It's just an unrealistic wish, nothing I'd ever advocate for but there is almost nothing worth watching anymore.

I just heard Fox is going

I just heard Fox is going to have special shows tonight in Memoriam for Tony on BOR, H&C and another one that is slipping my mind at the moment, I am looking forward to this...just wanted to let others know in case they didn't.

Oh please, O'Reilly. Show

Oh please, O'Reilly. Show some restraint tonight and let your guests share their remembrances without cutting them off and telling them what they should think...

Hi Chris... While you

Hi Chris...

While you know I agree with you about BOR...what the rest of the msm has done today regarding Tony's passing has been disgraceful in my opinion....so it matters not to me tonight how they do it, just as long as someone does....

CNN this early afternoon here my time, had an hour show about Princess Di...I kid you you not.

For me that says it all...

bt,

CNN Headline News had a very short report on his passing that was lengthened slightly later on. It was a surprisingly respectful if not a particularly warm remembrance. They did claim him as a "political contributor" to CNN, so I suppose that had something to do with it.
I was exasperated with the way the morning gal(I believe Jamie Colby)cut Brit Hume off mid-sentence in his closing remarks on Tony Snow. Some of these anchors treat the news cycle as an express train - no matter the occasion and the stature of the person they're interviewing. I was much more interested with what Mr. Hume had to say than what she had to say over him.
I also noticed that they had no democrat remarks until late this afternoon (from Susan Estrich) about Tony Snow's passing. It makes one wonder if they had anything to say. I was touched by Brent Baird's show of emotion as he recalled Snow's support when his son was sick.

McNotObama '08

I know what you mean

I know what you mean Chris...

I don't care for Colby and a few others they have on there...like you say just an express train...I won't go on further than that today....

I also saw Griff Jenkins tears this afternoon, he was a producer of Snow's radio show and friend of Snow's for over ten years, Snow being his mentor...my heart hurt.

Given todays legal and regulatory climate, I wonder if Debakey..

...would have even been permitted to develop these procedures today?

Somehow I doubt it.

It is wonderful that you

It is wonderful that you chronciled the accomplishments of Dr. DeBakey, but sad to hear of his passing.  He was truly the Father of Cardiovascular Surgery.

My eldest son is an Army surgeon that hopes to receive a fellowship to study transplant surgery in the near future.  Surely, the techniques that he will learn were pioneered by Dr. DeBakey.  My youngest son is in medical school and hopes to become a neurosurgeon someday.  Men like Dr. DeBakey are an inspiration to them both.

JD

JD,

Very impressive. You must be extremely proud. In case nobody has told you lately, you're a great parent! ns

Hear...Hear!

May your sons be what they will.

Hopefully...you will be proud of their choices..and achievements..

<edit> JD...I look back on this post and I hope you didn't take me wrong...I meant nothing but the best of people like your sons... I just want you to know that. .

Thank God for them...I know, I've been there done that.
