For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: oil plummets again today!
Crude oil for August delivery fell to an intraday low of $136 a barrel earlier on the New York Mercantile Exchange, off $5.37, the biggest loss in value since June 19. By late morning, it was down $4.87, or 3.4%, to $136.50 a barrel. Crude has lost more than $9 in two consecutive sessions.
Is this the beginning of the bubble bursting, or just a long overdue correction in a commodities bull market? Assuming the former, would lower gas prices before Election Day help McCain or Obama?

Don Quixote Syndrome
July 8, 2008 - 11:58 ET by KC MulvilleCode Pink becomes the favorite guest when O'Reilly simply wants to make a point about liberals in general. He puts up some true whack jobs as "representing" liberals, and when they embarrass themselves on camera, it conveys the subtle message that all liberals are equally crazy. O'Reilly then demolishes them on camera, making them look stupid -- but they were chosen precisely to be demolished. He does that all the time. Like Don Quixote, he creates these dragons out of windmills, and then slays them.
They all do it, of course. I'm sure you've all had the same experience I have. You're watching a show where the topic is about your religion. Then the media puts on a raving, blithering idiot to represent your religion's general point of view. You keep wondering, where did they get this fool? That's about the oldest media trick in the book. It's like when the reporter only interviews the "experts" who happen to agree with his point of view. The subjects, eager to get on camera, give the reporter or interviewer exactly what they're looking for.
Caveat emptor.

July 8, 2008 - 12:37 ET by PunditDotComNoel,
While the Feds don't get richer, Connecticut, alas, does get richer as the price goes up. We have a gross receipts tax (a percentage) on top of our fixed-rate excise tax. In fact, we just dodged another bullet, as the pct tax was to have increased 1 July. But, our legislature - no doubt "feeling our pain" - placed a moratorium on that increase. Nice of them, considering that we are already the state with the second highest gas tax. (I guess beating out California in that particular stat wasn't enough incentive to face a very angry electorate come November...)
Thanks for the info, NB gang
July 8, 2008 - 14:14 ET by Hero SquadI thought it was a fixed tax, but I wasn't sure if there were some percentage taxes incurred, where higher gas prices would be of greater benefit to the party that levied said tax.

Iran and oil prices
July 8, 2008 - 10:46 ET by Dr_LibertyIt has long been my contention that Iran (and other oil exporters, not least of which is Russia let us not forget) have an interest in higher oil prices. Oil bubble bursting?
July 8, 2008 - 11:54 ET by AuVoxA good rule of thumb is to watch what happens when the price of oil starts to climb again from its low (which it will, shortly). If it makes a new all-time high it'll continue up from there. If it pulls back and starts down again below it hits $145, we could be in for a substantial downward correction in the futures markets.
And yes, certainly supply-and-demand is the overall factor in the oil market, but the future speculators have inflated the actual value higher than it should be. The oil bubble will collapse just like all other bubbles.

July 8, 2008 - 14:37 ET by bigtimerPelosi is stopping any bills from coming to the floor regarding drilling here...
I love it...
Now if the repubs would learn to use this in the upcoming election in their individual districts...we could gain instead of lose...
Of course there are now some dems quivering about all of this now...
Going to be interesting what happens....

This is absolutely
July 8, 2008 - 14:40 ET by NL207This is absolutely appalling. Amongst voters who think the economy is an important issue, the Democrats enjoy a 58-25 lead over Republicans.
One wopuld like to think that people understand who is messing with oil and food prices. Apparently, that is not the case. The Democrats continue to evade responsibility for opposing energy development and for instigating via government subsidies the biofuels fiasco.
Oil is down still at about
July 8, 2008 - 14:31 ET by bigtimerOil is down still at about 5.54 a barrel...I hope it stays down as far as our own pocket book goes, where we live we have to travel quite a distance, so it is hurting us now, but I always said the price would have to start hurting people to wake up and not give a wit about the greenies and saving this and that...and realize it is and has been congress that has hurt us for over 30 years when it comes to this...
Unfortunately it will help Obama in my opinion, and to an extent Mccain too, he has always been against drilling too...in a way I hope it stays high to the election, so we get something productive done about this all in our own country, let alone the jobs it will create...
Time will tell... it's always about $$$$ in the end...one way or the other.

Sen. Mendacious, Democrap NJ
July 8, 2008 - 16:12 ET by CTWhen confronted on FNC this afternoon with obvious fact that a majority of Americans support offshore drilling for oil the senator endlessly repeated the Democrap lie that the oil companies are not drilling on 68 million acres they currently have under lease. This BS has got to be confronted and stopped immediately!
Carbon Credits Smoke'em if you got'em!
I wonder what it would cost
July 8, 2008 - 16:18 ET by bassndudeI wonder what it would cost for a guy to buy all the property around the capitol? If I could, I would buy it and put drilling rigs and oil wells all around it!
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
I got a better place to drill.
July 8, 2008 - 16:39 ET by CTFirst we should drill between the senator's ears to see if there is anything there!

The more we see and hear of McCain, the more we are reminded of why we oppose him. His voice grates on us, his face mocks us, his words insult our principals, and his supporters confound us. We can't help but believe that the man must be insane, and we wonder when everyone else will admit they believe it too.

I am somewhat curious about
July 14, 2008 - 23:40 ET by SchnikeysI am somewhat curious about this, as gas where I am just went up to $4.05/gal. from $3.95/gal.
Does this drop in oil prices mean that it won't be reflected until a little further in the future?
And it seems that any drop in oil prices should help McCain, although I doubt he has the willpower to make that argument work for him. Either that, or people just have this anti-Republican attitude so strongly drilled into them that a drop in prices will not have much effect.
