For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: sweltering heat in the East.

The press now is all abuzz with this current heatwave. Yet, as many of you are aware, the month of May was rather chilly around our nation.

With this in mind, how's that global warming thing treating you? How would you measure 2008 versus recent years and your memory of the past? How's the summer starting off where you live?

Iraqi Sheik Offers To Take Fight to Bin Laden???

I wonder if the MSM will report this one?

Iraqi Sheik Offers To Take Fight to Bin Laden
Hero of Anbar Would Stir a Revolt in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — The leader of the tribal confederation that has fought to expel Al Qaeda from most of Iraq's Anbar province is offering his men to help gin up a rebellion against Osama bin Laden's organization along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

"Al Qaeda is an ideology," Sheik Ahmad said. "We can defeat them inside Iraq and we can defeat them in any country." The tribal leader arrived in Washington last week. All of his meetings, including an audience with President Bush, have been closed to the public, in part because the Anbari sheiks, while likely to win future electoral contests, are not themselves part of Iraq's elected government.

Of his meeting with Mr. Bush, Sheik Ahmad said he was impressed. "He is a brave man. He is also a wise man. He is taking care of the country's future, the United States' future. He is also taking care of the Iraqi people, the ordinary people in Iraq. He wants to accomplish success in Iraq."

It hasn't happened

It hasn't happened yet...but I'm waiting for someone in the media to mention those words about the recent heat wave in the northeast. They said it last year when a similar heat wave affected the northeast.

The rest of the world could be an iceberg but if it's 100 and sticky in the northeast it's global warming.

GMA wasted no time in blaming heat wave on GW

GMA this morning was implying this heat wave was the result of global warming.....funny how they are silent during the cool spells (like all of March-April-May).

And if it 'is' global warming, why are we not breaking recent heat records instead of 100 year old ones?

Unbelieveable!!!+

That is interesting. I've

That is interesting. I've been waiting for them to blame the heat wave on global warming. Don't get me wrong though, 97 is abnormally warm for this area in June, but to claim it as evidence of a global warming trend is foolish. If they want to make that claim they will have to completely bypass the cool weather we've had up till even 2 weeks ago. I'm just glad that the Fox weatherman here actually gave the real causes for the heat wave instead of even mentioning global warming.

In case of a throwdown, my money is on Mr. Eastwood.

Sixty Minutes was on at my

Sixty Minutes was on at my brother's house while I was making dinner for the family last night. I was grumbling in the kitchen about yet another story on the evils of the Bush Administration, this time regarding OSHA's "lack of concern for the problem of "explosive dust" in factories - featuring the usual interviews with "whistle blowers", ineffectual Bush Administration department heads (where do the the Republicans get these innarticulate spokesmen anyway?) and a blowhard ultra-liberal congressman (in this case, George Miller (D) - CA). In the next story they were talking about Howard Hughes. My lib brother asked me about my grumbling and I remarked on the liberal bias of 60 Minutes. My brother said that they were doing a story on Howard Hughes, how could that be biased against Bush? The next minute, the focus of the Hughes story shifted to stem cell research, and criticized President Bush for holding it back. You can imagine my (twisted) glee as I pointed out the fact that they could work in criticism of George Bush into a story on unicorns.

Cold, so very cold

Its been so cold for so long, now that its hot I don't think anyone knows what to do with themselves anymore.  Here in the midwest we are getting pummeled by storms, but its still pretty hot.  I do not blame the cars on the rode so much as I blame the sun for this heat we are getting as summer approaches.  Now if it was 85 degrees in January then you might have an argument about global warming, but as its about summer now it really doesn’t fly with me.

Going from the 50s to the 80s

in just a few days, the warm weather was most welcome on Cape Cod!  (I could FINALLY put away the winter coats!)

Of course, the media will go on and on about it, but you know, before Al Gore became the world's temperature-taker, it used to be called "summer" ;-)

Central New York has been average to below average all spring.

Who do we blame for normalcy?

Yes, Cape Conservative, warmer weather is

called summer.    We in the Midwest have been

waiting for it for an extra long time this year and

are grateful to have it.   I hate freezing weather

and can't wait to enjoy warm, or even hot weather.

Tell AG he needs to remember summer, spring

fall and winter are all seasons of the year and

shut up about this global warming hoax.

I was ill-advised enough to

I was ill-advised enough to go out and do yard work yesterday.  It almost killed me!  It's like wrapping a hot wet wool blanket around your head and inhaling deeply.

I live in Fairfax, VA (about 16 miles from DC) and this is a particularly oppressive heat wave.  The year I moved out here (from the Mojave desert!) in 1999 it was a brutal June.  So as I've suspected: it's cyclical.

One think I've noticed:  the news will say things like "the worst recession in 20 years!" or "gas prices rising the fastest in six years" (or whatever they're measuring) "or the hottest June in 25 years!"  What all of that means is that 21 years ago, or 7 years ago, or 26 years ago respectively, things were as bad or worse than they are now.  So unless they start saying "EVER!"  or "in living memory!"  or "in recorded history!" or "since the foundation of the EARTH!" it's kind of hard to take these hyperventilations seriously.

Here in PA, it finally

Here in PA, it finally feels like it's really summer. May was lousy for the most part. We had more cool and rainy days than I'd like to remember. A couple of AM's I turned on the fireplace when I came downstairs to take the chill out of the kitchen/family room area.

Selective reporting. They will ignore places where it is cool, and only report on places where it is warmer than norman. SOP.

Update: OK, before anyone replies and asks "who's norman?" consider it corrected to "normal." LOL

What global warming?

I never much cared for hot weather except when I'm swimming, but my 81 year old mother is enjoying her month long visit with my sister in Texas where it is sweltering.

This "in Texas where it is

This "in Texas where it is sweltering" is not quite sweltering, in Texas it is sweltering when the temperature reaches 105 for 10 to 15 days in a row and the humidity is close to 90 percent.  Now that is sweltering even by Texas standards.

What the Media Didn’t

What the Media Didn’t Tell You About Friday’s Unemployment Spike....

Great article CKC - I hadn't thought about the min wage

I had already somewhat discounted the hype because of the month and was thinking we probably just had more graduates this year.

I hadn't thought about the impact of the minimum wage increase. I'm sure many jobs for high school graduates have been affected by that. It's not just the Federal min wage increase, many states like my own have increased it above the Federal one. In July 2008 the Fed one will be raised to $6.55 and in IL it will be raised to $7.75.

The hypocrisy and agenda of

The hypocrisy and agenda of the media know no limits. Here in the East, it has been unseasonably cool all year until this week. We had a hard winter and several late frosts, the last two of which hammered my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. We get one week of sweltering weather, and suddenly it's Global Warming. What BS.

McCain/Obama Town Hall

New York City's mayor Michael Bloomberg offers to host the first Town Hall Meeting between McCain and Obama in New York City.

Does he choose fair and balanced Fox News (remembering that Bill O'Reilly hosted a great interview with Hillary Clinton)?

No, he tries to push Diane Sawyer off on them.  So of course both candidates tense up at the thought and decide they don't want a media host (open to the press, but not sponsored by the press).

So the mind boggles at who will host these things.  I have a frightened feeling it will be James Lipton from the Actor's Studio with his cheesy questions like "What is your favorite swear word?"

TD Jakes and Obama

Several weeks ago TD Jakes held a Back to the Bible Conference in Dallas. On Friday he is praising Obama. How can this man stand in the pulpit and "preach" on morality and then praise someone like Obama who advocates sexual deviancy and killing babies?

To me Jakes is a false prophet because he teaches the prosperity doctrine-gab it and grab it/name it and claim it. To the MSM he is considered a mainstream fundamentalist. Would hypocrite be too strong a word to use? The definition of a hypocrite is a funeral director trying to look sad at at $20,000 funeral.

“A debate is a conflict which clarifies a position. A dialogue is a conversation which compromises a position.” –John E. Ashbrook, The New Neutralism II, P. 7

T.D. Jakes

I'm sad to hear this because I listened to Rev. Jakes every so often.  For him to put an emphasis on race rather than belief system is sad.

"To me Jakes is a false prophet because he teaches the prosperity doctrine-gab it and grab it/name it and claim it."

You have a right to your religious beliefs, but the prosperity doctrine has a Biblical basis.

UH, how does that

UH, how does that prosperity doctrine-gab it and grab it/name it and claim it." actually work?

I'm serious, I have heard of it and seen it mentioned here before, but I'm a little unclear on it.

The Short Version of the Prosperity Message

The basic premise is that God wants His children to be prosperous in every area of their lives (money, family, job, health, friends, etc).  There should be no lack in the life of a Christian (or a Jew for that matter).  The point being that when people see Jehovah's followers prospering, they will turn to Him as the one true God (abandoning Mohammed, Buddah, atheism, etc).

You can find several scriptures to confirm this belief.  Among them:

"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."  Psalm 37:4

"Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant." Psalm 35:27

In order for there to be total prosperity in a Christian's life, they must speak the scriptures that they want to manifest in their lives. This belief is taken from Genesis 1 - God spoke everything into being and made man in His image (i.e. a speaking spirit).  Also it is direction from Mark 11:23 where Jesus said:

For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Thanks. That's kind of what

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought, but I wasn't sure.

You believe God will give

You believe God will give you what you want and not what you need.  It is sorta like using God as a wish machine, if you did not get what you wished for then you need to pray more and possibly give more.  In other words your faith is bad.  TD Jakes

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

God is a Giver

"You believe God will give you what you want and not what you need.  It is sorta like using God as a wish machine, if you did not get what you wished for then you need to pray more and possibly give more.  In other words your faith is bad."

If you align yourself with the promises God makes in the Bible, then you aren't using Him as a wish machine.  You are accepting what He is freely giving.

Prayer and giving and faith are part of the Christian belief whether you believe in the prosperity message or not.  There is always room to strengthen all three.

God judges the heart and He can determine whether you are asking out of greed or not.

Weather Report

Here in Northeastern Ohio it's been pretty hot. We turned on the A/C Wednesday of last week.  It seems that over the past few years our climate has settled into a Winter-Summer cycle. Spring and Fall are either non-existent or very brief. This winter was very long with lots of snow. I'm surprised that, thus far, we haven't had the bad storms and tornados that have pounded other Midwestern states. (Knock on wood.) But then, it's usually in July when we get the tornadic weather here.

The early hot weather hasn't seemed to have had any negative effects on our plants, trees, or grass. Everything is healthy and thriving. I'm hoping this means that the sweet corn crop will be coming in early. :)

Drudge a traitor?

Did anyone else notice the Drudge Report today?  He has a big picture up showing gas prices at 406 & 9/10 a gallon for regular, almost 7 cents higher than the national average, along with the banner headline "DOUBLED IN A YEAR."   Who's side is Drudge on, anyway?  I though he was pulling an oar in our long boat.  Next thing you know, he will attribute this gas price mess to our glorious president and Rush will pick up on it, too.

George W. Bush recently went to Saudi Arabia to talk to King Addullah to get him to lower his oil prices.  And what did the MSM cover about the trip?  The King told Bush no and the MSM made the trip out to be a failure.  So typical of the way the media treats our president!  And now Drudge is piling on, too.  When will it stop?

Let us not forget that when George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, he promissed in a debate to use his influence and political capitol with the Saudi's to keep oil prices reasonable.  We can all be proud that he is a man of his word, even though the oil shieks rebuffed him.

So you don't want any news

So you don't want any news outlets to mention the price of gas?

News

It may be news that gas prices hit $4/gallon, but the national average IS NOT $406 & 9/10 a gallon as Drudge's picture intimates.  Again, I thought he was pulling an oar on our long boat.  Is he on George Soros' payroll now?

Did you see the article on the front page of the New York Times about how all the poor Southern folks are really get hit hard by gas prices?  No meat on the tables, changing jobs to work closer to home, borrowing money from their bosses for gas, etc., etc.  The times put up a U.S. map displaying percentage of income being diverted to fuel costs by region.  I swear, it looked just like the red states/blues states map, except the Times chose different colors.  Liberalism at it's finest; class warfare by map color and income levels as affected by gas prices.  Phooey, I say.

Bush's 'Influence'

Who had a plan to reduce fuel costs in 2006?

What are Bush's options in reducing these costs?

What are the costs?

Who is interested in eliminating the costs?

JDW

Will Ted Kennedy help write the universal health care bill?

Trickle Me This!

It is a big deal for those who didn't invest in the energy sector. Our gas costs hasn't exceeded the high price of socialized countries; Europe, UK and the like. Still our fleet fuel costs went up by a $$ half-million dollars $$ from 2006-2007. Who knows how high they'll rise this year. All I know is we've raised our product prices to offset our loss. So, expect to pay more the next time you dine out.

And now, today's crap actor

And now, today's crap actor Rupert Everett-free Shrub Report®:

Teens are finding jobs are scarce these days. Oddly, nobody even bothers to consider the increase in the minimum wage as one of the causes. Sloppy reporting by the "right wing" Trib Review, while the always left-leaning Toledo Blade actually mentions the truth.

The Minneapolis/3 minute

The Minneapolis/3 minute idle thing doesn't surprise me at all. Minnesota, in general, and Minneapolis, in particular are strong liberal bastions. I lived there in the Twin Cities area before coming to Pennsylvania.

Whenever I hear another story like this, I am reminded of my favorite KSTP radio talk-show host Joe Soucheray, who called Minnesota "the state where absolutely nothing is allowed."

When I was in grade school

When I was in grade school they told us an Ice Age was coming.  I got a little scared, but I figured I could always move.  After a few years of typical weather I forgot about the coming Ice Age.

Then Al 'Chicken Little' Gore came out (in 1993 on PBS kids shows because they have to start the brainwashing early) with his APGW hype, and I instantly knew it was a lie.

It angers me that we have to pay $4.00/gallon (and everything else) because of a frickin' LIE!

Everytime I fill up, I think of Al Gore on PBS in 1993 telling kids how the oceans will boil over like a 2 liter soda bottle left out in the sun.

Some thoughts from a thinking man--

They fly in the face of NB's "critical thinker, but it's nice to know what others think:

"Protectionism is the structuring of trade policy to protect the national sovereignty, ensure economic self-reliance, and “prosper America first.” It was the policy of the Republican Party from Abraham Lincoln to Calvin Coolidge. America began that era in 1860 with one half of Britain’s production and ended it producing more than all of Europe put together. Is this a record to be ashamed of?

Compare protectionism’s success to Bush’s record. Since 2001, he has presided over the seven largest trade deficits in history, the loss of 3.5 million manufacturing jobs and the collapse of the dollar, and added but one-fifth of the private sector jobs Bill Clinton created. Gold has gone from $260 an ounce to $1,000, oil from $28 a barrel to $100.

“Nativism” is another smear term, dating to the early 1850s and the Know-Nothing Party, which sought to halt immigration after millions of Irish flooded in following the famine of 1845. It carries a connotation of xenophobia, the fear and hatred of foreigners.

Thus does Bush tar critics who deplore his dereliction of duty in failing to defend this nation’s borders against a Third World invasion that may turn this Republic into a Tower of Babel.

From 1924 to 1965, there was indeed little immigration. Does that make Coolidge, Hoover, FDR, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Kennedy knuckle-dragging nativists? When JFK took office, we were as united and strong a country as we have ever been. How did we suffer from not having 12 to 20 million illegal aliens here? "

The last protectionist President we had was Herbert Hoover.  (Of course, in those days he lived in a very protectionist world to begin with.)  About 15 years and several million gallons of blood later...

Please rethink your actions.

"Abstain from McCain"

Ugh...

The problem I have is when I am routinely accused of supporting illegal immigration because I love free trade and have zero room for protectionism.  This is a repeat occurrence among some posters here on NB and I am sick of it.

For only the millionth time: I have no tolerance for illegal immigration as it is a slap in the face of my own family.  This is not a hard concept to grasp.

That, and I actually like paying relatively little for basics like food and clothing (compare that to Europe, where farmers are coddled and babied via the EU's CAP, and as a result, force Europeans to pay through the nose just to eat!).  Free trade is a good thing.  And, did you know that the United States, in spite of free trade allegedly destroying the economy and impoverishing everyone, was the #3 exporter in the WORLD last year?

I'm for Free trade too

but not for calling Mr. Bill a liar. I don't know how you took his post to be personally against you. He was just stating his opinions.

I think free trade discourages illegal immigration. I know that Mr. Bill disagrees with me on this, and I found nothing offensive about his post.

Look, I like him, but...

No offense, but you are unaware of the history between misterbill and I.  Notice the subject line in his post states something like "For NBs resident critical thinker".  That is a specific attack aimed at me.

I like the guy, but ever since he became a Lou Dobbs disciple, he has changed for the worse.  I have had my patriotism, among other things, attacked by him and others for DARING to say that free trade is a good idea.

Also, these hyper-protectionists think it is open season on me for my support for free trade, accusing me of everything under the sun from support of illegal immigration to being a traitor.  I won't put up with it from anyone.  Argue with me the merits of free trade all day long, but don't ever lie about me, lie about what I believe, or attack me in such ways for what I believe.  I will shoot back for I am sick of it.

Misterbill

You should not feel alone. Unsane and I regularly go a few rounds in the ring over politics and he has called me much worse than a liar.

I believe unsane likes to argue to alleviate boredom in his military job which apparently has lots of downtime. So you shouldn't take what he says personally. He just wants you to have a brawl with him.

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

Beliefs CAN be incorrect, as here

I believe unsane likes to argue to alleviate boredom in his military job which apparently has lots of downtime.   You believe lots of things that are in the end completely incorrect.  This is one of them.  I am what is called a Reservist.  A Reservist is...forget it.

He just wants you to have a brawl with him.  Nah.  Just more assuming and speculation on your part.

I'm so sad about Mr. Bill

It was so nice to see him back on here even though I was never on at the same time as him. I hope he reconsiders. Mr. Bill was always a bright spot here. I was hoping to see more of him.

How about a Senate hearing on this:

Hillary spent $109,823 per delegate...

She spent all of that money with nothing to show for it. At least big bad oil pays dividends to it's shareholders.

Hmmm...  Could you mean

Hmmm...  Could you mean something like increased domestic retrieval and refining capacity?

Folks,

We have a winner!!! Congatulations, you win one headache from liberal policies, and one roll of duct tape from Motherbelt to keep your head from exploding, again, due to liberal economic policies. Thanks for playing. :)
