For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: a looming attack on Iran?
An Israeli deputy prime minister on Friday warned that Iran would face attack if it pursues what he said was its nuclear weapons programme. "If Iran continues its nuclear weapons programme, we will attack it," said Shaul Mofaz, who is also transportation minister. "Other options are disappearing. The sanctions are not effective. There will be no alternative but to attack Iran in order to stop the Iranian nuclear programme," Mofaz told the Yediot Aharonot daily. He stressed such an operation could only be conducted with US support.
Is this real? Are we truly heading towards a military attack on Iran, or is this a completely unqualified opinion from a transportation minister? Would Bush actually do this in his final months in office? Would he seek Congressional approval, or do it on his own?

Will Not Happen
June 6, 2008 - 12:30 ET by zeestephenThis is not going to happen.
(1) At a minimum Israel must overfly two sovereign nations to reach Iran. Syria (or Jordan) and Iraq will never sanction a violation of their airspace.
(2) The USA must approve an Iraq overflight, which will completely outrage the Iraqi people, who hate Israel.
(3) Israeli jets might need to refuel over Iraq, bail out over Iraq, or even land in Iraq. This would be another political nightmare for the USA.
(4) Syrian, Jordanian, or Iranian jets might pursue Israeli jets into Iraqi airspace, another political nightmare for the USA.
(5) Iran has had years to prepare against bombing attacks. Thus, its nuclear facilities will be well protected, widely dispersed, and on 24-7 alert. Israeli losses, and possible pilot hostages, are guaranteed.
(6) The USA, which has the best Air Force in world history, was unable to knock out most of Saddam's palace bunkers, even though we knew exactly where they were. At best, a bombing attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would result in a modest setback in their march to atomic weapons.
(7) Should Israel attack Iran, Hizbollah would launch an all out rocket assault on Israel from its base in Lebanon, which would compel Israel to invade Lebanon.
(8) The idea that Israel or the USA can knock out Iran's nuclear threat with bombs is as ridiculous as the idea that European diplomats can talk Iran into ending its nuclear threat.
You have not done much
June 6, 2008 - 12:52 ET by bassndudeYou have not done much study on the abilities of the Israeli AF. Nor the range of the F-16. It is only 500 miles to Iran, and I cant see them having anymore trouble than when they took out the Nuke plant in Iraq.

bassndude
June 6, 2008 - 13:24 ET by zeestephenYou are predicting Israel will take the shortest route to Iran, which will be the most heavily defended and prepared route.
In terms of fuel consumption, you are also predicting no mechanical breakdowns, no fuel gulping dog fights, no combat damage, no lingering over targets, no evasive action, and no pilot error.
Israel's attack on Saddam's nuclear reactor in Iraq was at one location, above ground, in plain view, with limited defenses against an air attack.
The attack took just seconds and was accomplished with two bombs that cracked the foundation. The plant could have been rebuilt in two years, but the USA convinced the Germans to stop their assistance.
Israel's attack stunned the world with its audacity, surprise, and simple brilliance.
Iran is expecting an attack, and it has an unknown number of nuclear facilities with unknown levels of defense.
Zee, Israel has undertaken
June 6, 2008 - 13:32 ET by bassndudeZee, Israel has undertaken these tasks before, and had no problem. Syria did not even know they were in the area untill their nuke site was billowing smoke and dust. The eastern anti-aircraft and radar systems are antiquated and it is not hard to defeat them. Iraq had the most advanced system in the mid east. And what makes you think the F-16, with a range of over 2000 miles cant get there and back? At an altitude of 200 feet, they would be there and no one would know. Untill they made their bomb runs. Oh, and as far as Iraq goes, Israel was going to hit it again. And there are bombs today that will do far more damage to hardened targets under ground.

June 6, 2008 - 13:55 ET by zeestephenThe attack against Saddam's reactor was 27 years ago.
The recent attack against impoverished Syria was against one secret location less than 100 miles away.
The Israelis actually had photos taken inside the Syrian facility.
If Israeli jets, flying east, 200 feet over the ground, pass through Syria, Jordan, or Iraq, someone will notice, pick up the phone, and call CNN.
Iran will know they are coming, with or without radar.
And, how does America, which has pledged to protect Iraq's sovereignty, explain this violation of airspace to an enraged Iraqi government and an enraged Iraqi public?
Zee, you assume to much.
June 6, 2008 - 14:54 ET by bassndudeIran will know they are coming, with or without radar.
All I can say is Israel is batting a thousand so far. And I am not so sure Iran will know. I dont know that they called Syria before they bombed Iraq, and I dont think they called Jordan when they bombed Syria. I mean, what good is a suprise attack if you call them before hand? What makes you think that Israel dont have inside information on Iran? Have you ever known them to go off flying blind? There are several ways to get there. One is to refuel off the coast of Turkey. The other is to send two planes to each site, release their load, boogie out the Persian Gulf, refuel, and go home. You sell Israel way short dude. They will do what ever they think is in their best interest, and damn! everyone else.
Question, do you think we asked the UN or anyone else before we started operations in Cambodia or Laos or North Vietnam?

June 6, 2008 - 15:18 ET by BlazerThe Israelis wont' have any problem at all reaching the Iranian nuclear facilities. The Turks will allow them thier airspace, thier airforces train together and the Israelis used Turkish airspace to reach the Syrian nuclear complex with permission to do so, although the Turks plausibly denied it.
Israel and Turkey regularly trade intelligence and it is in secular Turkeys best interest that an extremist Iran is held in check and its nuclear program destroyed.
IAF could then refuel coming and going at Incirlik, AB. Not to mention the Israelis have the most sophisticated countermeasures and jamming equip. on thier aircraft along with cruise missiles.
Heck, "The Sword of Gideon" were safe on the tarmac and having having tea, before the Syrians ever realised thier nuclear program was inside of a smoking crater.

June 6, 2008 - 09:57 ET by BruzillaBush won't have to order an attack. The Israelis have twice now launched attacks into sovereign countries they feel might threaten them. They took out the nuclear facilities in Iraq, and last year bagged them in Syria. Israel is the one looking down the barrel of a gun, not the US, so they're a lot more realistic in how they view threats.
If Iran keeps claiming they will attack Israel, then Israel is going to do whatever it takes to prevent such an attack. They've seen enough lines of sweeping tanks suddenly headed for their border to eliminate feeling squeemish about pre-emptive warfare.

June 6, 2008 - 10:16 ET by BlazerIsrael, sooner or later will turn Irans nuclear facilities into parking lots. They have no choice, with the rhetoric coming from the political and religious leadership in Iran, it is clear Iran feels emboldened by thier future potentials with the program and thier proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon and seek to wipe Israel off the map, they say so every other day. If you say it enough, how long before you act on it ?
Also if the Persians go nuclear, there is no doubt every Arab nation will soon be consumed in a competitive nuclear race with them, which doesn't bode well for Israel or the U.S. either way. Outside of the fact that with no outside presence, the Sunni detest the Shia and the Arabs detest the Persians. Achmadinijad and a lot of his cronies are not so much followers of Shia Islam as much as they are adherers to a cult that believes the 12th imam will only come down from heaven when Armageddon is taking place and humanity and earth are enduring the Apocoloypse. There has been debate about how much control the Ayatollah actually has and whether Acmadinijad and his regime behind the scenes aren't actually undermining the Ayatollah and are looking to install a military junta. Some say the Ayatollahs are liberal compared to the followers of the 12th imam and wisely choose not to commit national suicide whereas the cultists look forward to it.
Nonetheless, if we choose to sit back, do nothing and continue to use sanctions with no teeth and have other countries undermine our efforts to curtail the Iranian regime, either way we will be in a war by proxy and not long after a shooting war with Iran. The sooner the better, imho.

One thing to keep in mind with the Australians is that they have been outstanding allies to the US in the past. They were great allies in the Vietnam War, and unfortunately their Vietnam Vets have been treated unfairly, just as the US Vets have. They performed extremly admirably in Iraq, so I don't think they wimped out. They did what they said. New Zealand also provided troops in Vietnam. Here is an apology from a New Zealand newspaper to their Vietnam Vets for the way they were treated.

Washington Post:
Facing criticism from Palestinians, Sen. Barack Obama acknowledged today that the status of Jerusalem will need to be negotiated in future peace talks, amending a statement earlier in the week that Jerusalem “must remain undivided.”
Obama, during a speech Wednesday to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-israel lobbying group, had called for Jerusalem to become the site of the U.S. embassy, a frequent pledge for U.S. presidential candidates. (It is now in Tel Aviv.) But his statement that Jerusalem should be the undivided capital of Israel drew a swift rebuke from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
“This statement is totally rejected,” Abbas told reporters in Ramallah. “The whole world knows that holy Jerusalem was occupied in 1967 and we will not accept a Palestinian state without having Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.”
Obama quickly backtracked today in an interview with CNN.
“Well, obviously, it’s going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues. And Jerusalem will be part of those negotiations,” Obama said when asked whether Palestinians had no future claim to the city.

June 6, 2008 - 12:47 ET by Ten7s"Would he seek Congressional approval, or do it on his own?"
He'd never get it unless we're attacked again, and maybe not even then. If a preemptive strike on Iran happens, the only option is a relatively short bombing campaign. There is great uncertainty whether bombing alone could be effective as the Iranian nuke weapons program is widely dispersed and heavily bunkered. Such a move risks sparking a regional war with scores of thousands of US military in striking range of Iranian chemical weapons and carrier-killer missles. Iran would certainly shut down the Arabian Gulf and 40% of world oil supply, putting the world economy into a death spiral. I'd say a planned strike from US is unlikely.
A regional war in the M.E. could start from an Israeli strike. But it will probably start from some random event like the Hezbollah-Israeli conflict a couple of years ago (Israel - Syria? something like that).

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, after a bitter debate over its economic costs and whether it would substantially raise gasoline and other energy prices.
Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote. The 48-36 vote failed to reach even a majority, a disappointment to the bill's supporters.
Both presidential candidates, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, were absent, although supporters of the bill said they had sent letters advising they would have voted for the bill.

I will never vote for him, just wanted to mention it.

I hope you vote for someone BT
June 6, 2008 - 19:20 ET by Dee BunkBecause every vote for someone is a vote against Obama and his margin is already likely to be huge. It would be better if he won with less than 50% of the vote.

Worry not..of course I will...which I have posted here before on and off on different threads...
I listened to all of the Libertarian two day platform and debates, plus the voting for their candidate...
I am so far voting for Alan Keyes...plus every state has the House, Senate and local votes...I never miss voting.

I'm not as anti-Barr as you are
June 6, 2008 - 19:46 ET by sarcasmoBut have you considered Chuck Baldwin? He's got Reagan-supporting religious right credentials like nobody else that's still in the race, and he beat Keyes for the Constitition Party ticket. I'm not really all that thrilled with Alan, but I think he's an excellent speaker so I don't mind him being a part of the debate.
Of course, if it were in any way up to me, the "debate" would probably be/include a game of Texas Hold'em poker, both for entertainment value and to see how these characters operate. And ideally, I'd force 'em all into a round robin chess tournament on the clock, a swimming race, a bike race, and a foot race, for maximum "degradation." :)

A TEENSY bit more required
June 7, 2008 - 02:34 ET by UnsaneIf all that was needed to be a great President was to deliver weekly radio addresses and give Sunday sermons, Baldwin would be great. Unfortunately for him, the Presidency involves a TEENSY bit more than that.
Hence no vote for Baldwin. And I sure as all HELL do not see how the other contests demonstrate preparedness for the office...but if I were king for a day, I would force them all to read Atlas Shrugged in its entirety, THEN write a 5000+ word dissertation on how they will apply the lessons learned therein to governance of the United States.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Who said that was all that's needed to be a great President??
June 7, 2008 - 05:22 ET by sarcasmoCertainly not me, so you're apparently hallucinating again. For one who accuses others of using drugs, it's a bit amusing. Anyway, for me Chuck's in the contest, and I'm sure people fear him in debate for many of the same reasons they fear Barr. New ideas are scary. And the first people who should be forced to read Atlas and write about it are Barak Obama & John McCain. The other contests I spoke of would sure as hell tell us a lot more about candidates than scripted "debates," so you're wrong on that one, too.

As much as I detest the MSM and thier "golden child" I dont' think I could stand him being sworn in. At any rate, we had 4 yrs. of Dhimmi Cahtah so maybe thats what its gonna take. Vote as you will, my close friends Jack and Jim will help me cope through the the next term, until the GOP can find its next Reagan.

Dear Dad,

June 7, 2008
Dear Dad,
As I sat last evening and remembered that it was the anniversary of D-Day, it suddenly struck me that there were some things I never said to you. D-Day was 64 years ago and you have been gone for 40 years now. I hurt inside because, even though you knew that I loved you, I never told you how you were my hero. When America was attacked, you were angry. You had us children sit around the console radio and listen to what happened to Pearl Harbor. You often told us what a great country we lived in and how we all owed a debt, not just of gratitude, but of service to her.
You chafed at the bit as all your younger friends enlisted and went off to fight for us. You may not know how many times I heard you discussing with Mom that you just had to go, it was your duty. I was surprised when you did go. In afterthought, it was funny in a way, a 38 year old man with 4 children, had to get written permission from his wife to go in the Navy. God bless Mom for granting that to you. I know how important it was to you.
I remember too, how you told my big brother Harry that he had to stay home and take care of us. I never heard you complain about the fact that he broke his promise and at 17 enlisted in the Marines and went off to the war in the Pacific.
You know, Dad, I never did figure out how Mom knew you were involved in D-Day. I thought all the mail was censored and nobody knew, but I remember her asking us to pray for you. You were on the USS Quincy. I heard a lot of the details when the war was over and you came home. I saw the scar on your thumb where a small sliver of shrapnel had hit you. Mom told me how you refused to go to sick bay and get it bandaged. She also told me how you refused to tell anyone so that you would not get a Purple Heart.
I know you went from there to the Pacific. You never said much about which battles you were in there. I know you never met Harry while you were both there.
I ws the man of the house for a couple of years. Mom sure made me feel proud when I earned a few dollars delivering ice and giving her my pay. Truth be told Dad, for a while I was glad you were gone. I wasn't disciplined quite as much as you would have done. In spite of that I was thrilled when I heard you were on your way home. The tears start in my eyes when I remember how you found that sister Helene had passed away at a very young age when you were gone. Why you did not find out until you got home, I do not remember. I could not believe it when I saw you sitting in the parlor with tears running down your face. I felt so bad for you, I quietly left without you knowing I had seen you.
And now, here it is, 64 years after D-Day. 64 years after all our young heroes fought and died for America. God help me, I am so glad they cannot see what has happened and is happening in America today.
Because of you, I am a patriot. I cannot but love a country that produced men like you. I wish it would again. There are some and most of them wear our unifrom. At any rate Dad, I was and am so proud of you, I just had to sit and write this to you. It is 40 years too late, but you are still my hero.
Your son,
Bill
P.S. I still miss you.
misterb... Tears are
June 7, 2008 - 01:07 ET by bigtimermisterb...
Tears are coming down my face....
Please don't give up on this country....I understand how you feel, I am almost to the same point too...I just do not think your father would want you to give up yet....he fought for the man you are today representing this country in my iota of an opinion.
...thank you for that beautiful, precious post to your father and family, the regard and memories let alone most importantly the gratitude we owe.
Later...

And now, from the man who WON'T be McCain's VP pick
June 7, 2008 - 05:34 ET by sarcasmoAn excellent column on oil & economics. Best line you won't hear on the "mainstream" media: "Ironically, China, in conjunction with Cuba, is drilling for oil nearer to our coastline than U.S. oil companies are permitted." Sigh. Walter, you should have run when we begged you to run. This country needs your mind in the Oval Office.

June 7, 2008 - 05:47 ET by Jack BauerWalter Williams -- a truly brilliant man. And therefore totally unqualified for high political office.
But don't worry about |China drilling 60 miles off US shores... if there's a eco-problem, Congress has mandated that it will not be permitted to enter US territorial waters.
And I'm sure Obama will, King Canute like, turn back the tide.
Google King Canute people, if you're not familiar with English monarchs of a 1000 years ago. But as a hint, that was the point this whole "divine" right of kings started to be questioned.
What I liked about Walter was no "Executive Experience"
June 7, 2008 - 05:56 ET by sarcasmoBecause it seems to translate to "raising peoples' taxes & raising spending." His experience as an economics professor more than makes up for it. He's the un-Huckabee, but for some reason Prof. Williams is popular anyway.
