Weekend Sports Open Thread

For all things related to sports. Possible talking point: Tejada does a Babe Ruth:

When Miguel Tejada met 8-year-old Jacob Scott on Friday, he was so touched by the little boy with muscular dystrophy he promised him a home run.Tejada fulfilled his vow to the youngster by hitting the first of three straight Houston home runs in a 7-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

"I was so excited," said Tejada, who'd never promised a home run before. "I know it's hard to tell someone you'll hit a home run and do it. But today when I went to lunch with this kid I wanted him to be happy. So I told him I'd do it."

Stop it. You can't actually promise someone you'll hit a homer, and actually do it. But Miggy did. If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye, turn off your computer, and back away from your desk.

Here's a great story about sportsmanship.

Also, any Celtics fans out there? What the heck? Choke choke choke!

So will Ashley Force pick up

So will Ashley Force pick up another win tomorrow? It's John's Birthday, and he's still looking for his 1000th round win. Meantime Melanie Troxel is on the provisional F/C pole with a 4.802 @ 327.59

Did you see anything in the

Did you see anything in the MSM last week about Ashley? Was she on any of the morning shows?

Ashley was on Wind Tunnel

Ashley was on Wind Tunnel with Dave DeSpain Sunday night after the race. But no, none of the kind of press that Danica got. I suspect that part of this is due to fact that women have been winning in the NHRA for 42 years.

Ashley has been on Leno several times, though, and the print media did a great job covering her win, including front page, above the fold coverage in the St Louis newspaper, which is awesome, since that's a first for that paper, and they are racing in St Louis this weekend! The paper also published all of the women who have won in NHRA competition.

Here's a link to some of the stories that ran this week:

http://media.nhra.co...

Check out the story on Melanie Troxel, and her husband, fellow Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr. There's also a couple of good stories on Antron Brown.

Antron, like Ashley is kind of a victim of past successes, as minorities have won since the earliest days of the sport. In fact, one of the most famous racing teams: the Stone, Woods, and Cook AA/GS team that dominated the 60's gasser wars was two black men, Fred Stone and Lenard Woods, and the driver, Doug Cook who was white. So it's one of those deals where all of the barriers have been broken for some time. Ashley is having to settle for being the first in Funny Car, and Antron's "first" is the first Pro Stock Bike winner to cross over to win in Top Fuel.

She'll probably wind up

She'll probably wind up getting some attention because she's hot and is successful, but again, funny car races don't reach a wide spectrum of people.

NHRA drag racing is number

NHRA drag racing is number two in TV ratings only to NASCAR, so yeah, it reaches a "wide spectrum of people". Every event has it's qualifying televised on ESPN2 as well as every round of professional eliminations on Sunday. ESPN2 also broadcasts the sportsman eliminations.

In fact, far more people saw Ashley's win last weekend than saw Danica's fluke deal in Japan. Both in person, AND on TV. The only time the IRL draws a big TV audience is for the 500, past that, not much there. Throw in IHRA's coverage on SPEED, and it's no contest.

Wow, Hawks push it to game 7.

LOL-We weren't even supposed to win a game in this thing.

RD

RD,

I'd LOVE you guys to win that game 7! It would be GLORIOUS!!! ns

Noel, so would I.

I mean, it has been nine long years!

Besides, the Braves are stinking up the Ted, and every other ball park they have played in, something awful this year.

We here in Hotlanta need something to cheer about. And soon.

Hey RD

Sporting News rated the NFL draft for the Falcons an A+. That is something to brag about. I really believe that Matt Ryan is going to do the job. I am a Panthers fan so I hope he doesn't do too good a job.

ricklail,

LOL, well, I think your beloved Panthers will be safe for another season, at least.

Ryan might really be great for us, but a rookie is still just that.

A rookie. :-O

The Canetucky Derby

I don't pay much attention to horse racing until the triple crown races start. What is this crap on NBC? They have yet to really talk about the race itself. What is this with Vince McMahon, Hugh Heffner. Bobby Flaw and the designers talking about the design of the riders silks? If this is any indication of what we are in store for the Olympics then I am already tuned out.

How about talking about the horses. It is their show!

Kentucky Derby

I didn't watch it yesterday, and now that I've heard the filly had to be put down, I won't.

But I must say, I am rather surprised that some idiot in the MsM hasn't conflated the demise of said filly with the upcoming demise of her biggest political backer....HRC.

Hillary in that hat, though, was too funny.  As much as I absolutely loved the new capfest here (best in a year, IMO)....Hillary in that hat would have sufficed this weekend.

EIGHT BELLES...

It was a good race, Big Brown lived up to his hype, & Eight Belles ran her butt off to finish 2nd. Where she got hurt was after the finish, I have seen no video of her accident, the race was over, & after a few moments, they show her laying on her side on the other side of the track. When the equine medical truck surrounded her & cut off the view to her from the public, I knew what was next.

Eight Belles broke both her front ankles, 1 of which came through the skin-a compound fracture. Very painfull & no way she could recover, so they put her down there. That is the saddest part of horse racing, as beautiful as it is to watch these animals do what they were born to do, sadly, this does happen.

As for the fact that Hillary picked her to win, I would not jump on that, the owners of the horse don't need to hear it.

Couldn't agree more dany with your heartfelt summation of the whole thing....I too saw this yesterday and wept a tear or two...making anything political out of this is sad IMHO.

I don't know that PETA's cause has anything to do with communism. They're fanatical in their belief that animals shouldn't be mistreated. I think there's a place for PETA in society, but they go too far for my taste.

Where's all the trash talk now?

Cavs 105, Wizards 88 - GAME, SET, MATCH - CAVS WIN 4-2 - need we say more? Three postseason series against these bums and King James and Company beat them each time.

Hey, Wizards! Looks like you'll be watching the rest of the NBA playoffs instead of playing in them. Next year, maybe you'll put your collective big fat mouths where your money is. You guys are nothing more than a classless, dirty team who deserved to get your butts kicked.

The Cavs are moving on - you're not - call your local links now and set up some tee times.
