For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Sharpton blasts Obama for "[grandstanding] in front of white people":
Barack Obama made a call for nonviolence in the aftermath of the Sean Bell verdict - infuriating the Rev. Al Sharpton, who accused the presidential candidate of trying to "grandstand in front of white people," sources told The Post. During what a source described as a "heated" phone call yesterday, Sharpton told Obama he was disappointed with the Illinois senator's words on Friday, when Obama said "resorting to violence to express displeasure" was "completely unacceptable and counterproductive."
Is Obama's campaign beginning to dissemble? Are we witnessing one of the biggest political collapses in years? Or, will media save Obama from himself long enough to capture the nomination?

New DNC Ad
April 29, 2008 - 10:24 ET by NeoCon JediI just saw a DNC-sponsored commercial, once again distorting what Sen. John McCain said about the economy. The took out bits and pieces of his speech, saying the economy was good while it super-imposed facts about how bad the economy is. They cherry picked his speech, forgetting to air the parts where he said how things are not as good as they could be and could be better (it's still better than the Clinton years).
This is a total displacement of the facts and the truth. Another DNC distortion for your viewing pleasure.

April 29, 2008 - 10:46 ET by Hunter12I asked if NB could provide the documentation on that speech. I think it would be interesting to know when the statements were made and what was the state of the economy at that time. Imus annual Radiothon for Children's charities coming up
April 29, 2008 - 10:55 ET by lareeThis is something Al Sharpton didn't seem to care about last year when he insisted Imus be fired in the middle of his annual radiothon for Children's charities. I guess CBS and MSNBC didn't realize either his many fans were watching what appeared to be pretty callous and heartless, they couldn't let him have one more day to finish his radiothon and say good bye to his fans?
http://imustimes.wordpress.com/2008/04/26/imus-radiothon-auction/
Now Obama stated that Imus should have been fired last year he wouldn't work for me is what Obama stated, no they did not take into account the soundbyte that saturated the newscycle in context of failed satire, they are not all gems and Imus apologized...unlike Obama's Pastor who is complaing now that the Black Church not himself is under attack...because his rants were taken out of context. I listened to him yesterday putting them in context uh huh well Obama stated, I wouldn't or couldn't disown Rev Jeremiah Wright and compared him to his aging white Grandmother, you know a typical white person. Barbara Walters asked Obama about his apparently two different standards on the View one standard for Don Imus who apologized an on air personality and the other his Pastor of 20 some years, Trinity was selling the DVDs of his incindiary remarks. Obama dodged the question he still hasn't explained to this day.

Wright's Bible quote
April 29, 2008 - 11:34 ET by candanceI've done some more research on Mr. Wright's famous line about Jesus having sheep in unknown flocks. I have found a passage he apparently drew that from, albeit he completely distorted and spun the quote out of context. Observe:
-When asked how Wright could honor the Islamic religion when Jesus claimed to be the only path to salvation, Wright responded "Jesus also said that he had hidden sheep in unknown flocks."
This would lead us to believe that Jesus had a different, unknown relationship with other religions.
However, this is the full context of Jesus' words found in John 10:
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.
Ah, so Jesus is talking about collecting all of his sheep unto one flock so that they will follow one master.
Is that the same message you gleaned from Wright's answer?

you did all the research for me, eh? yeah, before you I never heard that verse you found, that's absolutely right - so good for you:)! way to go, awesome, whoo hoo
the Samaritan used in that parable is about Jesus making a despised people the hero of the story - it's not just about helping people - it's Jesus saying to the pious Jews "you ain't the only ones around here doing God's work"
sorry if you're in denial - but that's Christianity 101
now if you claim to be Chrsitans - then is this how you feel about Muslims?
Here are some key Scriptures (Bible verses) on loving your enemies:
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another (John 13:34).
But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you (Luke 6:27-28).
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse (Romans 12:14).
We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it (1 Corinthians 4:12).
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:17-21).
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing (1 Peter 3:9).
you may now continue celebrating your massive brains - oh, and don't forget to score yourselves again:)
you have obviously won the next post on this!
gee, someday I hope to be as brainy as you guys, woweee:)
TM the point is the
April 29, 2008 - 16:08 ET by Dan The Man 2TM the point is the Samaritans were Jews, just a different sect. The Muslims on the other hand are hated by God because they worship false gods. God has always hated people who worship false gods. He destroyed the earth and almost all of its people once and at least 2 cities due to the fact they were evil. Evil in the fact they worshipped false gods.
As far as Bible verses, they are fine and Satan also knows the words of God and used them and twisted them to great effect in the garden. So just posting verses and stating what they mean is not good.
Muslims are evil in the Biblical sense; there is no way around that. God loves everyone but he does not honor everyone, He does not save everyone, only those who believe will be saved. A true Christian knows this, even Satan knows this.
You can love your enemy, but sometimes love means making tough decisions.
For Luke 6:34 says “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” And in His mercy he destroyed the earth? So we should do a God commands.
A lot of your verses are to counteract the idea that one should take revenge on another. That one should as Exodus 21:24 says “take an eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot” but God is saying taking revenge or getting even is bad. He never said getting rid of evil is bad though. In fact He cursed a tree for being evil.
And lest we forget Mathew 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18. "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
So we must believe the OT with all the times God told men to kill and destroy and the NT where God says to love one another. When the two are reconciled what do we do as God says both laws are valid?

IMO, Dan - the point is
April 29, 2008 - 16:15 ET by TruthMongerIMO, Dan - the point is that honoring Muslims is akin to honoring Samaritans - it is not an identical analogy - but similar enough - Muslims also claim to adhere to the original Abrahamic faith - just like the Samaritans claimed - I believe Jesus is effectively saying to us "don't be a pious anti-Samaritan or anti-Muslim or anti-whatever bigot"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samaritan#Samaritans_in_the_Christian_Gospels
but feel free to disagree
"Muslims also claim to
April 29, 2008 - 16:50 ET by Dan The Man 2"Muslims also claim to adhere to the original Abrahamic faith - just like the Samaritans claimed" and you may be right; however they do not recognize Jesus as God. If the Nuslims claimed diety of Jesus then you are right they would be as Samaritians, but they don't and therefore are evil. The Jews dont claim the diety of Jesus either but we are brothers in that we as Christians are grafted onto the Jewish tree.
Islam on the other hand hold to Abraham a small bit due to the fact Ismael is their antecendent. But, like the Pharacees they drifted into apostasy and worse have adopted false gods and prophets. At least their prophets do not adhere to what God deems to be a prophet of His will.
Jesus merely used the Samaritains as an example because they were so despised and hated. Jesus knew if He used the extreme He would have more impact. It was nothing more or less.

"And other sheep I have
April 29, 2008 - 12:42 ET by Gothampc"And other sheep I have which are not of this fold;"
I believe that Wright has a wrong interpretation on this passage.
My take is that Jesus is talking to followers of Judaism. I believe the "other sheep" he refers to is Christianity.
My opinion is that this verse goes along with what Paul said in Ephesians 2:11-13:
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
correct Goth
April 29, 2008 - 12:45 ET by candanceMost Bible scholars agree that Jesus was talking about uniting Jews and Gentiles together under the new covenant. A far cry from Wright's insinuation about Islam.
Colorado Universitys' Casualties
April 29, 2008 - 11:57 ET by ThisnThatDr William Gray (Hurricane forecaster) may be losing his job at Colorado State soon. His crime? Doubting the GW alarmists. Gray hasn't told any lies; plagerized any research; or performed poorly at CSU. But, CSU is going to cut him anyway, for being "controversial".
Compare this with CU's treatment of Ward Churchill in 2005. Although CU found that sufficient evidence exists of “plagiarism, misuse of others’ work, falsification and fabrication of authority” to refer such allegations to the University of Colorado at Boulder Standing Committee on Research Misconduct, they decided to keep him around until 2007.
So, if you challange dogma, you're dismissed, but if you falsify, plagiarise, and call people little eichmans, you "treated fairly"?
Sounds like Colorado could use a little housecleaning in their university structure.

April 29, 2008 - 13:35 ET by CortillaenI'm... not even sure what to say to this...
Okay, now I am. First, after a little reading, it doesn't actually surprise me much. To all appearances, the Quakers have been shifting away from Christianity and into some sort of amorphous conglomeration of universalists, agnostics, atheists, realists, humanists, postchristians, nontheists, everything-under-the-sun-ists (curtosy of Wikipidia). A quote from that article actually illustrates the point quite well: "'I think there's a myth that it's only Christians who feel like it makes people uncomfortable when they talk about Jesus,' [Morgan-Appel] said. 'There are definitely times when I see that there are still knee-jerk reactions from people within the Society of Friends who don't know what paganism is.'" Note that she is making the distinction that Quakers are not Christians.
This is the devolution of a Christian sect into just another relativistic "new-age spirituality" thing. "Yeah, we kinda believe in God or something, but everyone's welcome. You can believe whatever you want. It's all good." My response? Grow a backbone. If you're so ashamed of your beliefs that you let them get subsumed into this kind of pluralistic mass, they must not have meant much to begin with.
Dang, that turned out a lot longer than it sounded in my head...

Mindboggling AP. I mean
April 29, 2008 - 12:55 ET by Jack BauerMindboggling AP. I mean this is just so rancid it makes me want to slap the little puke who wrote it.
Okay let get some facts here. During the 1930s and WW2, it was the National Socialists through the Fascist party headed by il Duce who ran Italy.
Conservatives are not, and have never been, part of the fascist movement. The AP article is a deliberate attempt to tar conservatives as Nazis, Fascists and National Socialists.
Unless the AP is claiming that the British conservative party leader, Sir Winston Churchill, was merely part of the "Nazi" ideology which he helped defeat after Britain stood alone until the United States entered the war and ensured victory against real live Nazis and fascists.
My dad, a working-class conservative all his life, actually fought against real fascists. God this makes me so mad.

April 29, 2008 - 13:35 ET by candanceI had the very same thought this morning. That Wright would go out and self-destruct so bad that people would start to feel sorry for Obama, and then they'll stop equating Obama with any of the old sermons.

Nevertheless...I love it!
Btw...did you hear about Barbara Reynolds setting up yesterdays NPC with Wright and the Press Club....she is supposedly supporting Hillary...so who knows who all is involved...
I feel he knows he is losing badly and has to do this...I do not think he ever wanted any of this stuff with Wright in the msm lately...

Of course, I feel that way about a lot of politicians. It's a funny thing, I always assume they're lying until proven otherwise these days... Maybe growing up with "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton in office had something to do with it.

ckc, it's too late for Obama.
April 29, 2008 - 14:03 ET by R D HelmEven if this whole thing wasn't contrived, the only reason Obama is doing this at this late date is because Barry-O's relationship with Wright is adversely affecting his poll numbers.

April 29, 2008 - 15:08 ET by BDIn todays Washington Post on Page C2 in a review entitled
Esquire's Version Of Shock & Awe
By Peter Carlson, Washington Post Staff Writer, Carlson reviews the Esquire article which catalogued the various steps along the path taken by the remains of a US soldier killed in action in Iraq. It is a good read, but the last paragraph is what is interesting and most telling. Up to that point the author of the article does an admirable job of keeping any personal political position in check and out of view from the reader, but apparently they just CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES and put out their Liberal views in the last sentence.
The ending of the story as written:
I am awaiting anyone to tell me why that that last sentance was truly necessary.

Senator Clinton will be on the factor
April 29, 2008 - 21:54 ET by shawn228Bill O' Reilly has been waiting for years for this interview. I'm not surprised about Obama and Chris Wallace, but I did not think the Senator would agree to this one.

April 29, 2008 - 22:02 ET by Cool ArrowDid you see how withered Obama looked today when he finally repudiated the man and not just his words?
Hillary shows up on Oreilly tomorrow looking and sounding upbeat, and Obama is still wallowing in his inner turmoil.

April 29, 2008 - 22:07 ET by shawn228This has got to be one of the most interesting political years I can remember. Never before have I ever seen a more nasty battle to be nominee of either party. Bush and McCain was like an episode of Sesame Street compared to this.
I have never seen such disdain and politics involved for the country that is hosting the Olympics and it is not even the end of April.
Do you think Bill O' Reilly will pull any Whitewaters or Monica's ?

But this isn't the "sistah soljah" moment, it's the Dean scream in slow motion.
Obama brought all this on himself. Hillary had nothing to do with Obama choosing racism as an avenue to his ends.
But now, with Bambi standing flaccidly as a spent "balloon" lipserving what he needs to say to keep his position . . .
I know it's technically a tragedy, as theatre goes, but I can't help but laugh.

April 29, 2008 - 22:35 ET by R D HelmI hope, for once, Bill grows a pair for this one, else I shall be seriously miffed, too. I rarely even watch the guy anymore, except for the opening memo segment and his email segment at the end of the show.

Now that would be big fun to watch. :-)
