For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: is the dollar bottoming:
The euro could slip from its recent record highs against the dollar amid a schism between the European Central Bank and the Continent's political leaders.
In reality, the dollar bottomed against other currencies last year, including the pound and the Canadian dollar. This year, bottoms seem to have already been made against the yen and the Swiss franc.
If monetary policy at the ECB is FINALLY going to loosen -- after almost a full decade of American and international pressure to do so! -- the bear market in dollars could be over.
Do you agree, or see this as wishful thinking? Maybe more important, in a global economy, do we want a stronger dollar despite carping and whining about its weakness? Finally, if the dollar rallies, will media notice?

Economics of Government Spending
April 21, 2008 - 10:12 ET by ricklailJohn Hood, President of the John Locke Foundation, has a good column today in the Carolina Journal on how polticians tell us that government spending is good for the economy. Be prepare to spend some time reading it if you go to all the links in the article.
This is right up sarc's alley.

Yeah, people should pay attention
April 21, 2008 - 10:52 ET by sarcasmoBut they probably won't. At least our politicians are discussing important issues instead of spending 100% of their time spending money that's not really there. The Alabama county bankruptcy especially scares me, because (especially with the JP Morgan involvement) I think it's eventually going to become "our" problem. As for the dollar, the "good" news is that the Euro and other major competition has no better basis. There might even be something to learn from the government-money "trusting" habits of Vietnamese citizen-units.

April 21, 2008 - 10:28 ET by DJEddleI think we're at a dangerous time right now for the dollar. If it doesn't rebound from this fall, we could be in serious trouble. The biggest problem we have is our uncontrolled spending and ever increasing personal and national debts. If Americans don't figure out that every time we borrow money and every time we bail out a failed financial institution we put the dollar at risk, then I don't see this trend correcting itself in the long run.
We have become entirely irresponsible when it comes to fiscal policy and the average American, unfortunately, doesn't seem to understand how their uninformed vote perpetuates government carelessness. As long as this continues, I don't see the dollar becoming again what it once was.
I think it's time for the FairTax. It may not solve everything, but it would certainly help out greatly. And it might just save the dollar from becoming the peso.

April 21, 2008 - 10:34 ET by GothampcMichael Bloomberg running the NY Times. Can it get any worse?

All I know about the dollar
April 21, 2008 - 10:43 ET by mattmAll I know about the dollar is that the government takes more of mine than it should, and then wastes about half of it.
Sadly, the three stooges running for president don't seem to realize that. McCain did mention tax cuts, but that's really a revenue issue, whereas our problem is and has always been spending.
Is any prominent politician talking about this?
The Pope & The Media
April 21, 2008 - 10:50 ET by PeterDSome observations about the Pope's visit to New York. It seems the MSM had to always bring up the sex scandal involving priests. It seemed they worked it into every story, even positive ones. But they walk a very fine line. The majority of the sex abuses cases involved priests and young boys. But you rarely heard the term "young boys". Instead just "child sex abuse" or "children" because if they used the term "young boys" in each and every story, people might get the idea that the acts were of a homosexual nature and put gays in a bad light. In fact one network, I believe it was CNN, showed an in depth story of a now grown woman who was allegedly raped as a child by a priest and the outrage her parents felt in finding out many years later. Of course they had to emphasize a priest abusing a young girl.
As far as Bill Maher making negative comments such as calling the Pope a Nazi, and others making similar comments, they are basically a bunch of cowards. As Christians we are taught to turn the other cheek when struck. We are taught to love and not respond, so basically we make easy targets. Let's see Maher and the other elite cowards in media make nasty comments about Islam, Judaism or even Scientology.
Finally, I am still amused in thinking back when Pope John Paul died and Pope Benedict hadn't been selected yet. Many in the MSM were speculating and even hoping, that the next pope might actually be in favor of abortion and other liberal ideology. What dopes the MSM is filled with. They can be so entertaining and frightening at the same time.
MSM Agenda
April 21, 2008 - 11:18 ET by GothampcI noticed the sex scandal reporting too. Every time there was an interview, they always managed to bring it up. I began to wonder if "journalists" were getting a bonus for every time they worked it into a story.

Oil
April 21, 2008 - 11:28 ET by iveseenitallOil has ruled the modern world for decades. Corn has not, except as food. The "liberals" are going to kill us all.
Having worked with the "liberals" all my life, I know them well. One of their traits is to jump, feet first, into anything they believe will "change" the status quo (with which they are always dissatisfied). Consequently, they ruin good things to feed their own ideology. In other words, they create a crisis where one didn't even exist. The educational system and the Global Warming craze are prime examples. Now they have created a food shortage. Instead of working to improve what we have, or at least to accept the reality of a bad situation (dependence upon oil), they throw the baby out with the bathwater. Unfortunately, "liberals" are ruled by their feelings and emotions, not by the little brains they have.
P.S. This scenario will play itself out if Barry or Hillary is elected. Americans better be careful what kind of "change" they wish for.

Unless there was an large surplus of corn supply it seems to me that taking corn from food production would cause a shortage thus raising alot of food prices.

April 21, 2008 - 20:52 ET by R D HelmHere is what Neal had to say:
HILLARY'S MEDIAMORONS
Whew! That was a close one. I almost went a whole week without being
featured on the George Soros funded Hillary Clinton created anti-talk radio site
MediaMorons! I pledged on Monday I would manage to draw their attention before
the week was out ... and sure enough, Thursday
they gave me the recognition I so richly deserve. Here's the MediaMorons
synopsis of my evil deeds for the past week:
Gotta love it. Liberals, you see, react with absolute horror whenever
someone attacks their precious government indoctrination centers they call
"public schools." It is in these hideous institutions that our children are
taught that government is there for them at every turn of their lives from womb
to tomb. Government is always there to pick them up when they fall, heal their
wounds, and give them safe passage through life. It is in these government
"schools" that our children learn that self-reliance is for suckers and
dependency on government is the path to true happiness. The people of this
country are slowly coming to realize that our children are being ruined by these
grotesque institutions, but so long as the teacher's unions remain so
politically powerful getting any valid and useful school choice legislation
passed is iffy at best.
So .. MediaMorons ... thanks for helping me to highlight the problem.
Now ... for this week we'll try to get super-lefty Ellen at that "we watch Fox
News so you don't have to" website to wee wee all over herself over another one
of my Fox News appearances. First, I guess, I'll have to be invited onto a Fox

Placing plants in the media.
The Pentagon uses ex-Pentagon/military people to speak to the media on their behalf. The outrage!!
Emulating Goebbels.
Wow, Leon-A-Liberal is screaming "propaganda"... yawn.
Lying to our faces to sell an unpopular (and most likely unwinnable) war.
Your perception (desire) of how unwinnable this war -- or any war -- is has no relevance on how the Pentagon conducts it's PR. It's unpopularity, of course, does, and can be almost 100% chalked up to the modern-day MSM -- the REAL PROPAGANDA MACHINE -- that has tirelessly painted a negative picture from the moment we went into Iraq. This is the most across-the-board corrupt MSM our country has ever known. The Pentagon had to push back, since the Bush administration seemed unwilling to, for whatever reason.
You know, nothing really. Just 4,000 dead American soldiers and an
unknown (but undoubtedly staggeringly) high number of dead Iraqis.
Once again, your perception of what number of dead soldiers is acceptable or unacceptable in the theater of war, where men and women unfortunately die, has no bearing on an argument against the Pentagon and how they conduct their PR. So, again, I haven't a clue why you're injecting your own feelings about war and the suffering of war. Nor should civilian deaths enter this debate.
RealNameLean, that's 0-for-4. Another bad night at the plate.
