For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: another former Clinton administration official backs Obama:
The endorsement in question is that of Robert Reich, Bill Clinton's first Secretary of Labor and a friend of both the former president and his wife for four decades. Around 1 p.m. EST, Reich informs me, he intends formally to declare his support for Obama on his blog.
What do these high-level defections mean? Are they more about what folks think of Obama or Hillary? Or Bill?
If so many supposed "friends" and "associates" of the Clintons don't want them back in the White House, doesn't it suggest that conservative disdain for this couple is much more appropriate than the media's reverence?

Democrats - Personality Driven?
April 19, 2008 - 12:17 ET by zeestephenAlthough the Demo Party certainly has a solid core of political beliefs, I think they have always been more inclined to back the most dazzling, sexy, and dramatic candidates.
Gary Hart, JFK, Jesse Jackson, and even Bill Clinton come immediately to mind.
I don't think the GOP has the same instincts; if it did, our nominee would be Mitt Romney, not McCain.
In fact, I think it's telling that Romney, a strikingly handsome man, was elected governor as a Republican in Mass., one of America's most liberal states.
Clinton and Obama have few policy differences.
The blunt political reality - Obama is more attractive personally than Clinton.
John Kerry handsome?
April 19, 2008 - 12:21 ET by shawn228Yeah I guess John Kerry was very handsome huh? If it were on looks alone, wouldn't Edwards have gotten the nomination?
On Looks Alone?
April 19, 2008 - 12:32 ET by zeestephenshawn - you distorted my comment.
I said Democrats are "inclined" to vote for the most dazzling candidate.
In my lifetime that has been the case more often than not.
Dazzling Al Gore?
April 19, 2008 - 12:52 ET by shawn228Before "an inconvenient truth" Al "Gore was about as dazzling as a math book or agw book:-)
Walter Mondale and Dukakis had a dazzling flair to them as well huh?
Redefining "dazzling"
April 19, 2008 - 15:12 ET by nkviking75"Dazzling" has become a synonym for "sleep-inducing"? If they were medicine, they'd need a warning label telling people not to drive or operate heavy machinery,

Liberal policy is all about
April 19, 2008 - 12:25 ET by NL207Liberal policy is all about emotion. Physical appearance is a part of that. Physical attractive people, charismatic people, invoke emotions in their audiences, emotions that are positive towards themselves. Quasimodo is not going to run for high elective office and if he does, he isn't going to be elected. His appearance too evokes emotoins, feelings of repulsion.
Why did I choose Quasimodo as the strawman? Because although there are many repulsive, un-charismatic people in the world, Quasimodo is pitiable. This is also part of the liberal agenda. Quasimodo is a victim of his appearance. Democrats/Liberals feel guilty about this because in their black and hypocritical hearts, they loathe Quasimodo for his appearance. They believe that no other men are any better than themselves, therefore all men must loathe Quasimodo as they do. In the Liberal mind, only Government vcan make this fair and just. Since the onnly thing the Government can really do as sieze money and redistribute it, Quasi gets a goverment check and the Liberals get a pass on their guilty consciences.

April 19, 2008 - 11:07 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsWell, I would say that it looks like there is no such thing as loyalty with many of the democrat bunch. Many of them have 'friends' only because it helps them. I know this is true of humans in a general sense, but it seems more prevalent with the, ahem, more 'flexible' among us, not being tied down by morals or rules. None of that 'thick and thin' nonsense.

April 19, 2008 - 11:17 ET by MidAmericaI once worked in a large factory where I had a cordial relationship with a guy who was a forman and he was quite competent in his job as long as he was merely managing people. However one time he was assigned to a department where the 'real men' worked. My forman friend was trying to manage men that maintained and did extensive changeovers on complex machines that took years of experience to master. He confessed to me he was in over his head. For example, he said he would ask them to do something and they would say it couldn't be done which left him in the quandary of wondering were they right or were they playing him for a fool. That is what I see as an obama Presidency. His inexperience at managing and policy will leave him at the mercy of all these 'wolves' that are lining up to help. With a child Pharoah on the throne, it will be the ministers of the court who actually run the government.

Why the defection against Clinton
April 19, 2008 - 12:07 ET by MearlineI think because they liked Bill but not Hill. Even if Bill doesn't like these guys, he paid off his political debts and they were suitably loyal to her because of him. Now they smell blood in the water, they know that the Clinton machine can be smashed and perhaps they harbor a little 'get even' intentions of their own. Regardless, she'll pull this off to be the nominee.
But, let's ask Dick Morris...he hasn't gotten anything right since he left Clinton's employ.
I think they're leaving
April 19, 2008 - 15:18 ET by ckc1227I think they're leaving Hillary because she's not going to win. If roles were reversed, they would be leaving the messiah instead. Nothing generates fair-weather fans like politics.
2nd Amendment
April 19, 2008 - 12:28 ET by ricklailI picked up something on Cam and Company about Philly passing some gun control laws that are in direct conflict with the PA Constitution. (You guys from the Keystone Stone jump in and give me some more info. I was about half awake when I heard it.) Really not hearing anything about this on Rush, Hannity or even the MSM.
It now seems that the libs have found the word "hunter" in the 2nd Amendment. I guess in anticpation that the SC will strike down the DC handgun ban they are now saying that since "the right to keep and bear arms" applies only to hunters handguns should be banned because you can't hunt with them. Wrong-in some states you can. They kkep refering to the 2nd as a collective right when the other 9 are personal.
Is the word hunter understood just like the words abortion, healthcare, house, etc are in the rest of the Bill of Rights?

And today is the original
April 19, 2008 - 20:20 ET by motherbeltAnd today is the original "Patriots' Day." The day that the colonists stood at Lexington and Concord; the first battles of the Revolutionary War.
"Patriot Day" is the name given to September 11, to remember the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon, and Flight 93 that crashed.
While no one denies these people remembrance, in my opinion, a different name should have been chosen. They should have chosen a designation that would not conflict or be confused with a current, long-standing holiday.

April 20, 2008 - 09:14 ET by Roger the ShrubberI am sure there would have to be some sort of dress code clause in that tutoring contract, Un?
Dress code?
April 21, 2008 - 03:53 ET by UnsaneOh, not at all! I, after all, am a complete gentleman.
I would just insert a clause that at every tutoring session, she has to wear a skirt. She could wear anything else so long as she wears a skirt to go with it. And that shouldn't be too hard, she being a tennis player and all. :-)
(Ladies, never ask me "What should I wear?" Because every single time, I will respond with "A skirt.") :-)
And think of this: she will be universally HATED by all who have ever had the role of teaching me ANYTHING. For, if she were my Russian language tutor, she'd be able to achieve what they never did: a complete monopoly of my attention span. :-)

Russians blame botched Soyuz re-entry on women astronauts
April 19, 2008 - 21:53 ET by nkviking75From the AP via the Des Moines Register: A Soyuz space capsule returning from the International Space Station today (4/19) landed over 250 miles off target and decended in a trajectory that subjected the astronauts to severe G-forces. The head of the Russian space agency offered an interesting explanation:
Later, [Anatoly] Perminov referred to a naval superstition that having women aboard a ship was bad luck when asked about the presence of two women on the Soyuz.
"You know in Russia, there are certain bad omens about this sort of thing, but thank God that everything worked out successfully," he said. "Of course in the future, we will work somehow to ensure that the number of women will not surpass" the number of men.
Challenged by a reporter, Perminov responded: "This isn't discrimination. I'm just saying that when a majority (of the crew) is female, sometimes certain kinds of unsanctioned behavior or something else occurs, that's what I'm talking about." He did not elaborate.
Considering this is the second such re-entry in a row, that's a bit of a stretch.
One of the astronauts was my fellow Iowan, Peggy Whitson, who just finished a tour as commander of the ISS and has a great deal of experience in space. The other is a South Korean. I have to wonder if the fact that neither woman is Russian affects their attitude.
