Unfounded rumor of the day (courtesy of Jim Quinn): Pelosi's people met with the PKK, the Kurdish Commie rebels who have been fighting the Turks in the past year, while in Syria last spring. It wasn't Pelosi, Waxman, or Ellison, but it was Elise Slaughter and Tom Lantos who met with these terrorists. A lot of Repubs will not speak about this because some RINOs were about to jump ship and join the anti-war Dems, but now things have changed and they just want the story to go away. So, let's sum this up: the Dems met with terrorists to encourage conflict to piss of the Turks and hopefully choke off the supply route into Iraq, thus eventually forcing America leaving Iraq. Let's see if this has any traction. If this is true (remember, there are no concrete sources yet), can someone find out if they still hang traitors in the USA?
Sixty-three years ago today, American force reached the Elbe River, and American troops also liberated the concentration camp at Buchenwald.

We should celebrate Hollywood legend John Milius' 64th birthday today. He wrote the screenplays for Apocalypse Now, Jeremiah Johnson, 1941, Magnum Force, and others, and wrote and directed Conan the Barbarian and Red Dawn, as well as help created the HBO series Rome. He is responsible for famous phrases like "Go ahead, make my day", & "Charlie Don't Surf!", too.

I'm thinking that come general election time, the Democratic nominee will not be returning to this area.
I wonder what Obama thought when he drove past the houses that have the "Thank You, President Bush" signs displayed in the front yard.

I would guess they come to Lancaster simply b/c it's really the only place to stop between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Where else between those two cities would find as high a concentration of people as Lancaster? I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head. It's probably just a practical decision.

Velcro shoes? Good one.
I do know that my wife wondered why it took her 25 minutes to travel one half mile from my daughter's school to our home (with two unruly kids in the car), and thought with all the police and yellow tape that it was a bomb threat.
"Close," I told her. "It was actually an Obama threat."
I thought myself pretty clever as I explained what was going on. Unfortunately for Obama, he now has zero percent chance at getting my wife's vote. Granted, his chances before that hovered around 1/2 percent.
Which, I guess, contradicts the headline that our local newspaper used for the story: "Obama Charms Lititz." (TWIB note: Hero Squad was editor of this paper for 8 years.)

Schumer blasted on CNBC this morning
April 11, 2008 - 09:29 ET by ThisnThatGenerally, I hate CNBC. Booorrrrrriiiinnngggggg. But they had Schumer on this morning (~9:00am) talking about the FAA's forced inspections of the MD-80. And here's the kicker...
Schumer tried to turn this into a "Blame-Bush" situation -- you know, 5 years of incompetance, appointing the wrong person, FEMA-association with Katrina in the background. Well, the CNBC crew wouldn't have any of that. They kept on going back to today's Wall Street Journal that put the blame on Congressional Democrats -- and then the CNBC crew extended this to show how, with increased regulation, Congress would screw up every major agency of the U.S. Government.
This drove Schumer bananas. He tried to pooh-pooh and totally dismiss the WSJ; so then the CNBC crew started to mock him, saying things like "Yeah, right, if we want the truth then let's just open up the NYTimes here". Finally, Schumer was reduced to providing this analogy: "Ok, no regulatory control, so when someone takes medicine and dies, it's just too bad, according to the WSJ [and implied, Republicans and Bush]".
What a treat. Wish we could finally see more of this. Schumer deserves to be shown as the true idiot he is.

FAA Inspections
April 11, 2008 - 11:08 ET by BeanManThe airlines, read American Airlines at the moment, have a bigger vested interest in the maintenance of their aircraft than the FAA does. Anyone who thinks that because the government (FAA) mandates inspections on aircraft that they're safe is foolish. The aircraft are safe because the airline companies make darn sure that things are working not the FAA. Does anyone think that American Airlines would fly an aircraft with two hundred people on board that they knew was unsafe?!?! They would be rightly sued out of existance and the management would be sent to jail.
What has most likely happened is that the airlines got lax about performing "government mandated" inspections on their airlines. Their own inspections and maintenance efforts are not counted as FAA inspections and maintenance. This is a big brouhaha over nothing.
I have a good friend who flys for Southwest. They went through this about two months ago. I asked him about it and he said that the inspections and maintenance performed by the airlines on their own aircraft far exceed the requirements of the FAA and so if their own is up to date, why would you need the FAA.
Better yet, lets get rid of the FAA and let the airlines choose who flies on their aircraft. In the history of airline travel there has never been a hijacking of a chartered aircraft world-wide. Why? Because the airline charter company gets to decide who flies on their aircraft. Insurance companys could take over the inspection of aircraft. The Insurance company can simply cancel a policy if the airline is not in compliance.

While some of the jokes are good (there was one on there about a man in a wheelchair on a freeway, which was good), most of them are pretty lame. Additionally, the woman lays into the lame jokes way too hard- as does the audience in their responsive laughter. I recommend checking out a conservative satire site called The Nose On Your Face and examining some of the humor techniques used there...or who knows, maybe you could hit up the two guys who run it and strike up some sort of a deal LOL.
Aside from that, this site is enjoyable. :)

the U.S. economy may be in a recession.
CRAWFISH NOTE: Hey, its called the “free market” for a reason. Its called private enterprise for a reason.
Don’t we all know that “business cycles” are real?
Don’t we all know that we had a mild recession in early 2000 and before that?
Don’t we all know that whenever the federal gov-ment gets involved things always get worse in the long run?
(like the royal congress borrowing $150 billion on our credit card
instead of cutting their spending to give us a couple weeks pay
“stimulus” is going to make a difference after a month, ha, ha,

Don’t we all know businesses and voters have been very fat and very happy for about 6 years?
Don’t we know we have plenty of oil in North America but are not allowed to drill for it?
Don’t we all know recessions do not last? (if the gov-ment butts out)
Don’t we all know media “recession rage” is always the last year of a Republican president?
Don’t we all know that lowering taxes and gov-ment overspending would sure help?
Don’t we all known that any democrat winner in November will “tax us
into prosperity” while blaming others for that sure-to-fail (again)
approach? I guess “we all don’t”.

Biomass Morass
April 11, 2008 - 11:46 ET by bradbenj5952Here is a simple and interesting point that seems to be lost on just about every global warming "enthusiast". All of the oil that we are pulling out of the Earth was made out of some historic biomass...plants and animals. In some bygone era of Earth's history, all that biomass that is now under the ground was on top of the ground. That era was evidently far more lush and organic than what we see today as suggested by the fossil record and the sheer volume of carbon material that is yet under the ground. Might I suggest that we could be causing more harm to our futures than good by not pulling it up and freeing it once more? Might we actually be helping present and future generations by putting more raw carbon materials on top of the ground to grow more food and raw materials for living, make more dirt and wood products, produce more livestock and fish, etc. etc.?
see: http://www.co2scienc...
Was the Earth in a more dire circumstance when all the buried biomass as on top?
Incidentally, atmospheric water vapor represents 95% of the greenhouse effect! Perhaps we should outlaw the boiling of water!

What no bias looks like
April 11, 2008 - 12:17 ET by acumenLet's surge again, like we did last summer...
From Yon's Op Ed --
Equally misguided were some senators' attempts to use Gen. Petraeus's statement, that there could be no purely military solution in Iraq, to dismiss our soldiers' achievements as "merely" military. In a successful counterinsurgency it is impossible to separate military and political success. The Sunni "awakening" was not primarily a military event any more than it was "bribery." It was a political event with enormous military benefits.
We know now that we can pull off a successful counterinsurgency in Iraq. We know that we are working with an increasingly willing citizenry. But counterinsurgency, like community policing, requires lots of boots on the ground. You can't do it from inside a jet or a tank.
Over the past 15 months, we have proved that we can win this war. We stand now at the moment of truth. Victory – and a democracy in the Arab world – is within our grasp. But it could yet slip away if our leaders remain transfixed by the war we almost lost, rather than focusing on the war we are winning today.

No Earmark Left Behind Act
April 11, 2008 - 12:40 ET by Jack BauerHave you noticed how so much in the news is now beyond parody because, well... it already reads as a parody? Sir Shrubber keeps up bang up to date daily on that...

CONGRESS TO PASS ‘NO EARMARK LEFT BEHIND’ ACT?
Deepak Vijay Throwt, Senior Editor, Politiscum
4/11/08
Democrat party leaders are moving fast to improve the Democrat controlled Congress’s favorability rating amongst special interests, lobbyists, and crooks.
Party insiders have told Politiscum of a recent secret meeting between Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi at the Robert K. Byrd Memorial Bridge, Museum, & Brothel ($378 million earmark provision to the Armed Services Medical Security Act, 2003).
Apparently they agreed a joint House/Senate approach to the NO EARMARK LEFT BEHIND ACT to ensure our most precious resource: pork barrel spending through government funded programs.
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid says: “Bush’s illegal pre-emptive war against earmarks is lost. He needs to admit defeat, bring his troops home, and let the porking begin.”
In a statement House Speaker Pelosi said: “When the Founding Pilgrim Parents wrote our constitution thing, sometime in the 1500s, if I remember correctly from that University class I attended for half a semester, they guaranteed everyone would be happy forever thanks to the government giving WE THE PEEPS lots of stuff after “taxing the crap” from the rich evil descendents of George Three and his robber Barons, which for the purposes of social justice includes all those earning more than $30,000 a year."
House and Senate officers hope to start the legislative process in the ten day window between the never-ending Easter recess and the start of the long summer vacations.

April 11, 2008 - 13:03 ET by Cool ArrowGuess we should have continued the Clinton administration practice of shipping prisoners to Egypt for "questioning".
I don't have a problem with you calling waterboarding torture.

The story is filed by the AP who is one of the instigators who harped for months that waterboarding is torture (in the media's opinion). Now in this story, it is downplayed to "harsh treatment, or interrogation", after they succeeded in undermining our attempts to gain intelligence once again.

Waterboarding is not
April 11, 2008 - 13:15 ET by bassndudeWaterboarding is not torture, never has been, never will be. Neither is sleep depravation, nor is climate control. Torture is defined as the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure.
So I would guess that you missed the memo, not to mention a few other things you seem to be missing.

LEON'S QUESTION OF THE DAY
April 11, 2008 - 15:11 ET by LeonHappy Friday NBs!
Today's question is a tough one. Can someone please define what the Bush Administration means by 'significant progress'.
I've posted some examples for context:
1) “In the north and south [of Iraq], we have made significant progress.” Scott McClellan (10/27/2003) LINK
2) “Fighting together, our forces have made significant progress in the last several days.” Prez Bush (11/13/2004) LINK
3) “In the past year, we have made significant progress.” Prez Bush (6/28/2005) LINK
4) “[W]e’ve made significant progress.” VP Cheney (10/19/06) LINK
5) ” I think we have made significant progress in Iraq.” Prez Bush (2/23/07) LINK
Considering the White House has used these words to describe occurences in the Iraq War over 300 times in the past 5 years, I'd think it should be an easy one to answer, however, I think you'll find that you can't.
Wouldn't you think with this much 'significant progress' we'd be almsot done?
It means we've improved
April 11, 2008 - 15:19 ET by Hero SquadIt means we've improved the situation, but that the job is not complete.
Hero Squad uses it in a sentence: I've made "significant progress" on my home improvement projects. Yet my wife still manages to point out all of the things I have yet to do. When I make "significant progress" on those, she will no doubt find something else to add to the list.

April 11, 2008 - 15:51 ET by Hero SquadI still say it's significant.
The moral of the story is, "significant" is in the eye of the beholder. If you saw what the house looked like a year ago when we first bought it vs. now, you'd probably agree.
But whatever adjectives we are adding to progress, I'm glad we are all agreeing that progress is being made.

April 11, 2008 - 15:51 ET by bigtimerLeon...
Oh I think we would of been way past significant progress and done by now, already achieved most of our goals and had complete Victory if it wasn't for the msm the papers like the NYT's and WaPo...and of course the leftists in congress who have done everything they can to ensure defeat...their yen for complete power and votes, plus their hatred for Pres. Bush and his administration at the expense of people's lives here and elsewhere, especially our military trumped all...nothing like having the enemy within... we would of been done now.

Yes BT, Very astute.
April 11, 2008 - 15:56 ET by LeonYes BT,
Very astute. Our failure to acheive victory was definitely b/c of the MSM's biased coverage of the war.
It has nothing to do with the fact that Iraq is a country composed of three sects that have hated each other for thousands of years. Nothing at all.
Furthermore, i wasn't aware that the MSM had troops on the ground. Ha.
Most hilarious post of the day. congratulations, you win nothing.
