For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Happy Easter.
What does this day mean to you? Has its meaning changed as you've grown older? Anybody doing anything special or out of the ordinary?
Does America have its religious priorities mixed up a bit inasmuch as we clearly give greater emphasis to Christmas? Should it be the other way around, and Easter be given more attention?
Any other thoughts this Easter Sunday?

Happy Easter, everybody.
March 23, 2008 - 10:09 ET by Roger the ShrubberHappy Easter, everybody. Let's celebrate the rebirth of Jesus Christ Liberal-style today!
As a bonus, here's a warm and fuzzy story for ya.
Happy Easter
March 23, 2008 - 11:02 ET by iveseenitallThe core values of Christianity, the Ten Commandments, are the basic principles upon which America was founded. They have been under attack for decades now. Can they remain undaunted? The enemy within, the modern "liberal" relativist has infultrated our schools, our gov't, our media. He is weaving his destructive message into the lives of our children on a daily basis. As we watch our corrupt public figures get a pass from the corrupt media, the irony becomes clear -- our basic "freedoms", so irresponsibly, unscrupulously manipulated, are being chipped away. And our own apathy and sheepishness ads to the problem. Freedom used this way is no freedom at all. The ultimate result of anarchy is a prison of its own making. Sad.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
Roger, you really can't
March 23, 2008 - 11:31 ET by motherbeltRoger, you really can't make this stuff up. I don't even know what else to say about that.
However, it does remind me that Liberals used to not mind the secular traditions that they created around religious holidays, (because they want to celebrate too, without the "religious" stuff). So for Easter, the bunny and the eggs and the candy are OK. I've even seen "Easter trees" decorated with plastic eggs.
Then, in an ironic twist, they launch an attack against those same secular symbols, because now those symbols are.....wait for it...emblematic of a religious holiday!
So I guess, now it's OK to have the bunny and the candy, etc....just don't call it Easter.
I repeat, you really can't make this stuff up.

We may not be there yet, but we must be getting very close:
March 23, 2008 - 12:07 ET by R D Helm1 Timothy 4:1-2:
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
2 Timothy 4:1-4:
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
I think that about covers it.

March 24, 2008 - 16:34 ET by TheDeuceI love Christmas. My family celebrates it, of course...lights, presents, tree, but at the end of the day, it is 'only' Jesus' birthday. We all have one of those.
But...
Jesus Christ was the only one of us who called his shot, 'betrayed, beaten down, taken out, coming back, promise kept.' He even called the day of His return.
Remember that what happened from Passover to Easter made the way for the real reason for the (Christmas) season.
Wow

The meaning of Easter---
March 23, 2008 - 10:23 ET by misterbillThe meaning of Easter---has not changed for me. My beliefs are as strong as ever.
The way I feel about the celebration of Easter has changed. The way I feel about churches and Easter has changed radically. I do not attend church anymore. I did not want to learn Spanish to give honor to Jesus. I can do that at home in my native language, English!
I believe that as we celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord each Easter, we are given an opportunity to reflect and make the rest of the year a rebirth of our love and convictions. It should be an opportunity to retrun to God's way. To live with decency and respect for our neighbors with love of God, country and family.
This is increasingly difficult each year. I have forgotten which college, but one of them was going to have a comedy play called the "Res-erection". Doesn't that make you proud?? Can't you see where we are??
I will stop there, say no more and just offer my prayers to Jesus on this special day.
Misterbill
March 23, 2008 - 10:51 ET by iveseenitallSo right, Misterbill. You and I have watched this ugly story for a long time. Raging "liberals" have infected so many of our "churches". Look at how much of the Catholic church has been changed by its "liberal" wing. This "liberation theology" thing is not only in black churches with likes of Wright and the Obamas. It is going strong with the "Catholic" commies in Central America. But your message of true love and understanding does not go unheeded. From what I've seen you post so many times here, your goodness is evident. You have not left the church. Unfortunately, the "church" has left you (and me). Sad. Happy Easter, Misterbill.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
isia--Thank you--
March 23, 2008 - 11:09 ET by misterbillI truly appreciate the compliment. It is ironic how things happen sometime. I was doing a quick peek at a few newssites I check. One of them had an article about how they were going to start having one mass in English on Sunday mornings. This , to honor the Americans who had helped build the churches. The article commented that the only English language mass was on Saturday evening. It also mentioned that the older, original congregants wanted to attend English masses on Sunday. <sarc on> Isn't that amazing! Those conservative old fogies who built the churches and who now number very low in the parish because the influx of illegal immigrants drove most of the others out , want to celebrate mass on the day they have been for 50-60 years! Amazing! <sarc off>
I am truly happy that my confessor advised me to wait before I chose the priesthood as a path.
PS I can look God in the eye and die with a clear conscience. I know that Jesus separated His world from Caesar's and bade us to do the same.

March 23, 2008 - 11:30 ET by JohnCYou guys are in my world. I was born an Episcopalian and even won a grant to to to the Virginia Seminary. But in the 70's as I prepared to go to war my church, Holy Trinity in Philly gave sanctuary to draft dodgers and anti-war protesters (none of whom were Episcopal). When I returned from Nam I switched to a Presby church. That lasted three years till they decided women should be preachers. I then went on to a Methodist. Stayed there till in the early 80's they decided that gays can be ministers. So I moved to the largest Lutheran church in my area, Gloria Dei. Walked in one Sunday and the "Aids Quilt" was hung in the church and activists were circulating among the congergation looking for money. Now I celebrate at home in my old fashion way. This morning I searched in vain for the Easter parade in Atlantic City or Rittenhouse Square. They don't even bother to show them any more. So, I'll cook ham and have a quiet meal with my wife. But we all know the secret: Christ IS Risen! Amen.
Don't mean to be a "downer" on such a glorius day
March 23, 2008 - 11:13 ET by FastEdbut I need to share my grief, as part of my healing process. Most of you are considered family, so I don't feel like I'm intruding, so please stay with me. Easter is a day of celebration, of resurection and life, as such today, today especially, the day is bitter sweet for me and the rest of my immediate (wife, daughter, sister, brother-in-law, nieces) and my extended family (most of the NB family, neighbors and friends).
Early on friday (Good Friday, of all days) my mom joined my dad in what we would call eternal rest. As much as it was expected, she had been slowing down recently, as 89 year olds do, it was still a shock. Looking back, talking to her on thursday, in her hospital room, I had the foresight to let her know she was loved, had done a good job with my sister and me, and it was time to just sit back and rest. She had earned it.
So, this Easter is bitter sweet, but as we believe in the resurection, we believe that she is now enjoying her well deserved rest, with the man she had dedicated her life and can now continue to live in our hearts.

My comfort after losing both parents and two sons, over the years, is my belief in Christ. In my saddest, lowest moments, my faith has shone through. It does not shut off the pain of the loss. Please tell you family that I shall pray for them today. I have already asked God to comfort all of you in your time of sadness and loss.

March 23, 2008 - 12:09 ET by Prester John....the lady in charge of the hospice care gave our family a pamphlet that described what was physically happening to her body and it just nailed what we had observed over the previous several weeks. At the end of the pamphlet it talked about how the observing the death process is like being on a dock and watching a ship slowly disappear over the horizon and remarking "there she goes".
It then ends with people beyond the horizon saying, "here she comes".
Somehow that seems particularly appropriate today.

I understand completely. My father died on Thanksgiving day when I was 15 years old. For a few years after his death I questioned my faith at every turn because he committed suicide and as a young adult I could not figure why God would let him do that. Strange as it may seem, good did come of his death, but it took years for me to see it. Now my faith is rock solid.
My condolences and prayers go out to you and your family.

Why do most not get the day off
March 23, 2008 - 11:19 ET by shawn228I wonder how come the United States does not consider Easter a holiday. In Canada you get Good Friday off and Easter Monday. Most people I know are lucky to get ever a half day for Good Friday.
Considering it is the most sacred day of the year for most Christians, this should be considered a holiday.
Easter "message"
March 23, 2008 - 11:43 ET by iveseenitallThe Easter "message" has been destroyed in modern day America. In that sense, the "liberals" have won. It didn't take much effort, however. Modern "liberalism" is easy. It's the Pinocchio story. It's a "philosopy" which offers short-term pleasure in lieu of true happiness. And so many of our young are attracted to it today. Of course, it leads to nothing but misery and discontent, but no matter how much as history proves this, we repeat the mistakes over and over again. Jesus tried so hard to warn us, but instead of heeding his words, we have become the three monkeys--hearing, seeing, and speaking nothing of the evils which surround us and are slowly choking us to death. Sad.
NEVER, NEVER trust a "liberal"
iveseenitall
March 23, 2008 - 11:44 ET by shawn228Since this is such an important day in the Christian calender, why not celebrate the resurection of Jesus H. Christ instead of spewing hate towards liberals. They are your fellow man, are they not?
Shawn
March 23, 2008 - 12:09 ET by iveseenitallAs I've always said--"The lies from the left are considered "free" speech, while truth from the right is considered "hate" speech." I guess you've fallen into the trap. Your words evince modern "liberal" thought. There is such a thing as rightous indignation. Even Jesus condemnmed the money-lenders, for their actions, not for who they were.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
free speech
March 23, 2008 - 12:13 ET by shawn228I believe in free speech on both sides iveseenitall. I believe I am as hard on liberals as I do conservatives, it is just I don't post of DU and KOS, so I do not have a chance to defend the conservative postition as often. March 23, 2008 - 12:03 ET by misterbillI had hoped you had changed, You showed great promise for a while. Is it not true that the Secular progressives have been the leaders in the effort to suppress all things Christian? To point that out is not spewing hate. To mention with disdain the name of those who "spit in your oatmeal" is not spewing hate.
hi misterbill
March 23, 2008 - 12:08 ET by shawn228It is just my opinion on such a important day for the Christian calender, why waste it blaming liberals for ruining Easter.
If someone can't find a church they like to worship at, I fail to see how that is a liberals fault
Thank you, Misterbill
March 23, 2008 - 12:20 ET by iveseenitallThank you, Misterbill. Because I defend what I passionately believe, does not make me a spewer of hate. It's those three mokeys at work with Shawn--hear, speak, and see no evil. This is the "liberal " indocrination at work. Apathy about modern "liberal" relativism has brought us to where we are this Easter Sunday -sitting at our computers, trying to make sense of what has happened and how we've lost the real message of Easter.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "lberal"

March 23, 2008 - 12:33 ET by shawn228Maybe saying spewing hate was not the right choice in words. I apologize to both you and misterbill. I just don't see how it is liberals fault for the downfall of Easter. It should not make any difference how anyone else feels about Easter, only yourself.

March 23, 2008 - 12:14 ET by DelsaEaster has not changed but the way I feel about it has.
Growing up we looked forward to our Easter Baskets. We wondered how big they'd be and where they were hidden as we followed the jelly bean trails in 5 different directions toward our Easter treasures.
Thirty years ago, after 7 years of marriage (wow that is a long time), at 33 months of age, our first son died in our pool. It was for our entire family the worst thing we had collectively been through.
I was alone with Michael. My husband was on a business trip. The guilt was, well overwhelming.
As I sat by myself into the wee hours of the morning, I attempted, through tears to read a poem.
"Do not stand at my grave and weep, for I am not asleep..."
Night after night for a very long time, sleep did not come easily.
In those lonly hours, I learned to understand GOD was reminding me that HE was not asleep and neither was my son. GOD blessed me, sometimes I don't know why, but I knew that HE was blessing me, just as he blesses us all.
Easter was of coarse for my next two sons about hunting the ever elusive Easter basket, and I made sure they understood things did not happen without a reason. GOD has a plan and it is our job to remember that when there is darkness in our lives, we must always look up. When we look up we can see the light.
For all of us Easter must serve to remind us how special the people in our lives are. Remember to tell them because in the scheme of things, life here is very short even if we live to 100.
GOD bless you all today and everyday.
Remember "church" is where GOD and his blessed son Jesus Christ reside. And that is in your heart. They do not sleep, the ones we loose do not sleep, and they are always with us
HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER SUNDAY.
I HOPE TIGER WINS DORAL!

March 23, 2008 - 14:40 ET by misterbillWe all deal with pain and suffering differently. In the end, one very important thing is how we feel with ourselves. Grief is sadness, sadness is depression. It is not to be avoided, it cannot be . I tend to remember poems and hymns when I am saddened. Sometimes, the sadness of others , makes me sad too. There are a lot of nice people in the world. When they hurt, we all hurt a little, when they suffer, we all suffer a little too. It has been over 35 years since my youngest son died, almost 10 since my oldest son died. My parents have been gone for years. It is a rare day when I do not think of one or all of them. I would like to share a Eugene Field poem about a lost son that is so sad, but so beautiful:
Little Boy Blue
by Eugene Field (1850-1895)
The little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and stanch he stands;
And the little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.
"Now, don't you go till I come," he said,
"And don't you make any noise!"
So, toddling off to his trundle-bed,
He dreamt of the pretty toys;
And, as he was dreaming, an angel song
Awakened our Little Boy Blue---
Oh! the years are many, the years are long,
But the little toy friends are true!
Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,
Each in the same old place---
Awaiting the touch of a little hand,
The smile of a little face;
And they wonder, as waiting the long years through
In the dust of that little chair,
What has become of our Little Boy Blue,
Since he kissed them and put them there.
My son's little toys sit in the corner of my mind. I look forward to the day when I will see him play with them again.
God bless you!
"toys sit in the corner of my mind"
March 23, 2008 - 15:16 ET by DelsaI love this poem. thank you so very much for sharing it. It rings familiar.
I remember one afternoon we were sitting in the family room and we heard the hollow sound of a red rubber ball bouncing on our back patio. My husband and I stood up at the same time and looked outside. Nothing to see, but the sound was heard non the less.
A priest said to us that grief was like the tide. When it is in, we grieve and when it goes out, we continue to breath.
The things you said are known to those of us who loose our children. In some strange way it prepaired me for my fathers death. We were so very close. Sometimes I re-read the books or poems he wrote. He left us such a legacy. He was followed by mom four years later and I talk to them all the time.
I've always thought loosing our son gave me the strength to handle anything and made all the other hardships minor in comparison. I know what is important.
I agree we feel the pain of others very deeply. I know just what you mean.
I wish you well and am very glad you are here.
God has blessed you. I feel it.

March 23, 2008 - 18:43 ET by RESTLESS 1I can't imagine the pain of out living your children. I can only pray that the pain of such turns to understanding as time goes by. It's so wonderful to see that freedom of speech is so selective. There is nothing in this film that does not appear on this site on a daily basis by people who are not the site owners. The difference is primarily it is Christianity that is raked over the coals herein.
I haven't read Network Solutions' TOS in a long time, but I doubt very much that anything in this film would violate it. Not that what is in the film should make a difference under any circumstance ...the purpose of the site was merely to promote it. Does the man have to go to a provider that allows pornography to find one that won't pull his material because someone will find it offensive? Oops, sorry, they won't allow it either because it doesn't have gratuitous sexual violence in it.
