For general discussion and debate. Possible talking points:
- Fed cuts discount rate...on a Sunday!
- JP Morgan buys Bear Stearns for $2/share!
- Stocks are tumbling around the world!
- Dollar heading lower with fears that it could become the new "carry trade" currency!
In the midst of all this, Alan Greenspan, who was the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006, is warning that America could be facing its worst financial crisis since World War II. Whether he's right or wrong, how much are the current problems due to his monetary policies during the past three decades? Will media address this as they focus on what's happening in markets around the world, or will all the troubles be blamed on George W. Bush, tax cuts, and, of course, Iraq?

Nice juxtaposition of two photos on page A8. The Article is about the cost overruns of the new 'Marine One' presidential helicopter fleet. The interesting part is how they framed the photos of Bush boarding Marine One and then below it- the great picture of Nixon boarding Marine One after his resignation with his arms wide and displaying the peace signs. Nice!

Our Fed is a joke - no one in our Fed is a business man. No one in our Fed ran a business. No one in our Fed has a clue about practical implications of their stupid economic policies.
The big issue is that we have multiple feedback loops in a system that no entity can control - Fed is an invention of a much simplier time when it was in fact possible to inject massive amounts of money into the system to force system to do X or Y. It is no longer the case.
Take oil prices, I believe a simple announcement of a plan to increase domestic oil production an refining capacity would trigger a drop in the per-barrel price. Am I wrong?
Yes, you are wrong - opportunity cost. Announcing that we will increase domestic oil production does not increase domestic oil production. It just provides the market in time when US says would do X. Only increase in actual oil production would have a chance to affect oil pricing. It may take too long to actually increase production or it may cost too much to increase it.

March 17, 2008 - 11:44 ET by dscottActually, a much quicker response on gasoline prices would be to immediately suspend the 51 cent a gallon ethanol subsidy and the existing requirements on the minimum percentage of ethanol in fuel supply. This will introduce competition between ethanol and straight gas which will lower the cost. The Congress created the mess with gasoline prices not the crude oil prices. If you have been paying attention to demand and supply, the price of gas should have gone down!!!!! There is a glut of reformulated gasoline going into storage right now. The price of gasoline at this point is artifically high. http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/twip/twip_gasoline.html#demand
As far as the Fed is concerned, they can't cure a problem they had little to do with in it's creation. The problem is in the derivatives market, Bears Stearns got what was coming to them for the get rich quick schemes when they involved themselves in playing the insurance game on mortgages and other loans (CDOs). When a $30 stock ($3.84 billion) goes to $2 stock ($256 million), the valuation was all paper to begin with just like Enron. The derivatives market has to unwind to find the true value, so there will be a few more of these brokerage houses taking the hit just like Bears Stearns. If you own a financial services stock, get out now if it isn't already too late or short the stock.

Markets derivatives etc.
March 17, 2008 - 16:18 ET by Ten7sFirst, let me say that I'm quite sad about what is taking place in the markets and economy vis-a-vis credit derivatives. I've been warning family and friends for more than 2 years about the credit derivatives problem and the likely catastropy that it poses for the markets and the economy as a whole. I've even posted some on the topic on various sites, including NB. Most of my family listened, and I got them into conservative investments before the Great-Unwinding started last August. A couple of my friends listened, but most didnt'. And I dare say that NO ONE on any of the sites listened to the least degree. In fact, I got either the cold shoulder or nasty replys for merely trying. So a few months ago, I stopped posting about it, even when invited.
BTW I too think that Fed involvement at this point is likely to only make things worse, and perhaps MUCH worse depending on what happens to the dollar. In any case, we're only about 7 months into what is likely to be a historically infamous financial event, the seeds of which were actually sown about 15 years ago (but I digress).

Anyway...I also saw the dirty filthy intentional statement by Greenspan this morning....I wished the hell he would just shut his friggin' Greenspeak up....we need Andre Mitchell's old man around our economy as much as we need a hole in the head, this man slowly increased interest rates every single chance he could before he left...he makes me ill, he is a destructive overrated force that I cannot stand...never could....but the leftists in the msm loved him...they still do.

Jacking up our taxes just to redistribute billions upon billions of dollars every year in order to lock a group into poverty to get their votes.

March 17, 2008 - 18:03 ET by BDWe cannot win?
Better tell that to the insurgents who are getting demoralized by the day.
In a rare balanced report in the Los Angeles Times entitled
Foreign Fighters In Iraq Seek Recognition, U.S. Says
Interrogations of 48 detainees to understand their motivations provide a picture of typically young, lonely recruits.
By Alexandra Zavis, she finally breaks the news that not all is well in the joyful place that is "Insurgentland."
Some intersting notes and excerpts:
90% of the suicide bombers attacking in Iraq are loners from outside of Iraq who just wish to attain some form of social recognition.
"Most of these young men wanted to make an impression, but paradoxically they did not tell their families they were going off to Iraq to fight for Al Qaeda out of fear of disapproval," said Smith, a U.S. military spokesman.
"Their recruiters preyed on their desire for recognition, acceptance and friendship, Smith said."
"Once they agreed to join the fight, most of the young men were flown to Syria and then smuggled into Iraq by road, he said. The facilitators who met them in Syria often entertained them at nightclubs and bars during the months it sometimes took to get them to Iraq, Smith said."
"But when they reached Iraq, those destined for suicide missions were sequestered in safe houses with copies of the Koran and few other amenities. They complained that their Iraqi handlers looked down on foreigners, did not give them enough food and treated them harshly, Smith said."
"Some spoke of their disillusionment on discovering that most of the attacks carried out by insurgents were directed against the Iraqi people rather than U.S. forces."
"Again and again, we heard this reality bothered the recruits," Smith said. "They had not come here to kill Iraqi civilians. . . . They felt misled."
"Eventually, most just wanted to go home, he said. But their handlers had their passports and their money, so they felt trapped."
"U.S. officers have suggested that the insurgents are using women because they attract less attention. The insurgents may also be having difficulties recruiting foreign volunteers."
But, but, but....

BT and Blonde - I thought of you two with this Hillary article
March 17, 2008 - 18:55 ET by Dee BunkI cracked up this morning when I read BT's posting on the chat thread about how she gave up when she went in one time and everyone was talking about how tall they were. It sounded so funny and I was trying to remember how we got to talking about it. It does stink when you come in on a chat in the middle of something like that because it seems so stupid if you weren't there to see how it evolved.
Then I saw this on Drudge and it reminded me that we were talking about what a bad dresser Hillary was. Blonde Started it! I thought you would both get a kick out of this article.
Hillary's bad clothes
I saw that article earlier
March 17, 2008 - 19:30 ET by motherbeltI saw that article earlier today Dee...I was expecting it to say WHY she dressed so badly (since it said click here for the fashion editor's verdict).
I think she's just not used to picking clothes...she just buys whatever hits her on any given day. She probably thinks the variety is good, but I think she would be better if she picked one basic style and dressed it up, dressed it down, etc.
I don't know who she listens to, but one time, for a splash of color she had a little thin twin-set kind of sweater (in a turquoise blue) tied over her shoulders on top of a black pantsuit jacket!
EEWWW. At least now she's wearing some colors...she does need to back off the yellow though...the "sunny feeling" attempt is getting a little obvious. Like when she had that "Pretty in Pink" interview.

Hill has no class...in anything at all, she shows it by her appearance.
She can't change....impossible.
I have only seen two, possibly three times where she must of accidentally listened to somebody else and dressed well for the occasion, both times were in a skirt and jacket type outfit, and I think one was a pant-suit, she wouldn't know how to use accessories if she tried..
Just in-"NEW NY GOV ADMITS TO AFFAIR!"
March 17, 2008 - 22:01 ET by PawpawNGeez, these DIMS are all falling apart! "NEW NY GOV ADMITS TO AFFAIR!" Rants, rantings, affairs, money laundering, lobbyists, prostitutes, 3 way love, land deals, and it goes on & on. THE PARTY OF CORRUPTION seems to have switched aisles[like it really ever did]! I can see the headline overseas as if AP or Reuters would do: "US in droves of possible CIVIL WAR!"
Here's link to new NY GOV affair story!

POPPY????
March 18, 2008 - 05:36 ET by UnsaneWhile watching AFN News and its force-feeding of CNN (groan) the other night, I noticed a report done on a MN farm concerning rising commodity prices.
I remember very little of it,except for one thing: the reporterette's name stuck in my head: Poppy Harlow.
POPPY?
Who in the hell names their daughter POPPY???
What did that poor thing do to deserve the name POPPY???
(Just had to get that off my chest...)

March 18, 2008 - 10:39 ET by BDYears ago I had a woman in my command who named her Daughter "Pajama" and it was pronounced "Paja - Mae".
She had seen it in a catalog and thought it was pretty. Lets just say she was a 19 year old single mother.
