For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Is the world caving in on the Democrats:
Just how bad are things going for our good friends on the opposite side of the aisle? Are we witnessing an historic meltdown of epic proportions, or will this all be worked out in time for the Democrats to come together for the November elections?

Just a word on the Spitzer
March 15, 2008 - 09:57 ET by motherbeltJust a word on the Spitzer deal before we move on....I just caught a bit of Neil Cavuto on Fox...he had 4 people talking about it.
Only one guy was condemning Spitzer: he said a leader gets privileges and with it goes responsibility. The rest (including a woman) said we have more important things to worry about.
But I was most disappointed in Ben Stein, who I thought was a pretty level-headed guy. He used the "he who is without sin cast the first stone" argument, and said we are all sinners.
OK, Ben, so I guess all standards go out the window. Since none of us are perfect, no one can criticize anyone else...so much for prosecuting lawbreakers too, if only the perfect can judge anyone else.
<sound of duct tape being ripped off roll>
I'm sure Ben Stein would
March 15, 2008 - 13:00 ET by stratmanI'm sure Ben Stein would feel that way if Spitzer had hounded him for a "mistake", putting him in jail, and then Spitzer got caught doing the same "mistake". Right?
Or how about if Stein had a daughter that went into prostitution. I'm so sure he would be fine with men having their way with his daughter since, you know, everyone's a sinner.
[sarc/off]
I like Ben but this was stoopid. Maybe he was playing Devil's Advicate or the topic hit a little close to home in some fashion.
If Spitzer were single with no children and an orphan then I would be hard pressed to object to consensual sex between two adults in privacy save for the illegality issues and his position of trust and exemplar as Governor and zealousness as Attorney General, but Spitzer has a wife and three daughters who will suffer for the weakness and arrogance of their husband and father for the rest of their lives. Then there is the pain inflicted on his parents if still alive. In this case, prostitution was not a victimless crime.
RRAM Tough!
But...
March 16, 2008 - 03:25 ET by heldmywSpitzer was caught playing "shuffle the dollars" in a fashion that set off regulatory alarm bells and brought in the Feds.
It was only after that that the violation of the Mann Act and the revelation that he is a global thermonuclear hypocrite came down.
True, that is the fallout that forced him out of office, but is that what he will be charged with? If anything?
True. The money is what
March 16, 2008 - 12:57 ET by stratmanTrue. The money is what started the investigation, and that was under the auspices of protecting Spitzer from a crime as much as determining whether a crime was being commited by Spitzer. Then there is the issue of interstate transportation. Each of these issues will factor into his prosecution along with the illegalities of solicitation. Spitzer is in a world of doodoo of his own doing.
Because Spitzer knew all these activites would either raise suspicion and/or be easily investigated, I would not be surprised to see his attorney use sexual addiction as part of his defense. It is stunning to think that he would use tactics to further his criminal activities which he himself had tracked in investigating and prosecuting others. Then again, how many times can one re-invent the wheel - it could be said that because of his knowledge of criminal activities he precisely chose methods he thought were least likely to land him in a jackpot (ie caught). Oh what a tangled web we weave.
My original post focused primarily on the act of prostitution and how it not only affects the people directly involved in the behaviour but also those indirectly involved such as family members. Even taking away the legal issues and mandating health and governmental oversight (regulations and taxation) still leaves the familial, social, moral and ethical issues. As such, prostitution is rarely a "victimless" crime. I'm sure the children of Spitzer feel negatively affected.
RRAM Tough!
The Ben Stein I've seen
March 15, 2008 - 20:22 ET by Chris NormanThe Ben Stein I've seen lately is the not the Ben Stein of a few years ago. His rock-ribbed conservative philosophy we grew to know and admire seems to have developed a case of rickets.
Apparently he's gone over
March 16, 2008 - 06:25 ET by motherbeltApparently he's gone over to "the dark side" LOL...
And people who quote Jesus' "cast the first stone" statement never stop to think that maybe He was just making the point that stoning to death was a little extreme for any sin.
That's odd, because Stein
March 15, 2008 - 20:30 ET by balboaThat's odd, because Stein has been very willing to cast stones before. Suddenly now he's getting all philosophical.

Mario
March 15, 2008 - 10:33 ET by iveseenitallHaving lived in New York during the Cuomo as Governor years, I see that the jerk hasn't gotten any better with age. I'm sure he taught Spitzer plenty about hypocrisy. Take his latest comment about the war , for example. He's on the "it's illegal" badwagon now. And his remark that the next president might "feel like" starting a war with Iran ( implying, of course, that President Bush simply "felt like" starting a war) is typical of this unctuous windbag. Cuomo and his "journalist" son Chris make this former New Yorker, also a St. John's man, sick to his stomach.
Former New York Governor
March 15, 2008 - 10:58 ET by motherbeltFormer New York Governor Mario Cuomo said the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama could be ``ruinous'' for the Democratic Party if the contest isn't resolved before the August nominating convention.
Gee, Mario, you say that as if it were a bad thing.

'If he wants Kuwait, let 'em have it' was Mario's position.
His biggest achievement as governor, besides having businesses tripping over themselves to get the heck out of the state, was to declare December 21 'Winter Awareness Day.'
No, I don't know what that means either.

March 15, 2008 - 10:32 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsThe democrats will win the White House this year and win big. Look at what they have going for them:
Black vote, it's a lock no matter who the party picks as candidate, as long as it's not Bush.
The bubble head vote (this includes most youths), all bubble heads vote democrat all the time.
The 'I want' vote, all the people who want a nanny will vote democrat.
Criminals and the recently deceased vote, happens every year.
Maybe the biggest thing the democrats have going for them is the Republican National Commitee, they have grown balls of marshmallow and a spine of jello recently and will not fight or stand up for their own anymore.

Bad dog or bad family?
March 15, 2008 - 13:08 ET by acumenDog whisperer Cesar Millan had his hands full with a bulldog. Or, more correctly, a bulldog had a mouthful of Cesar's hand. So teased the video at the beginning of the Dog Whisperer last night.
In explaining the method of correcting the dog's harmful behavior Cesar stated (paraphrasing) that the dog hadn't become this way overnight and similarly it would take a great deal of time and patience to correct the dog's bad behavior. Long hard slog came immediately to my mind. And not surprisingly, the family of the dog were shown to have encouraged this bad behavior by their seemingly innocent actions so the family would have to adjust their behavior for the dog's benefit as well.
First things first. Cesar would have to gain control of the dog. Cesar explained that once the dog could be controlled the warrior dog would have to learn to become simply a dog again, not the warrior he once was. When the warrior dog finally got in that workable dog state of mind it would take months and months of patient and consistent follow-up effort by the dog's family to get the dog to be able to interact civil with other dogs and people. And as always the case in a Cesar episode, the family of the dog was critical in the correction of the dog's behavior.
This got me to thinking about the harmful behavior demonstrated over the many years by radical Islam and the seemingly innocent way the larger family in the world responded to that behavior.
Just as it took many years of practicing bad behavior by radical Islamists to become the warrior dog, it will equally take many years to correct this bad behavior. Just as it took Cesar placing a choke collar on the dog to get control of the dog before he could begin to correct the dog's behavior, Western Coalition forces have put a choke collar on radical Islamists in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Based on no recurring terrorist attacks on American soil post 9/11, greatly reduced violence in Iraq (an actual reason to hope) and with the numbers of Taliban being daily reduced on the battlefields of Afghanistan, it would appear the Coalition is gaining control of the warrior of radical Islam. The choke collar did its job. On to the next step.
Like Cesar and the dog's family correcting the behavior of the warrior dog after first gaining control, the next step in humanizing radical Islam will require the rest of our extended world family dedicate time and patience to fully change the warrior of radical Islam back into the human.
But as America and much of the rest of the world's family is moving ever closer to gaining control of the radical Islamist warrior there seems to be some in America's family that wish to stop the correcting of warrior behavior before the job is completely accomplished. These slackers prefer to cut and run. They wish to deviate from spending the necessary time to fully change the warrior into a cooperative member of the larger family - a human.
Democrats don't want to spend the time required to correct the behavior. They want to pull out of Iraq before the warrior has completely transformed back into the human. Cesar tells us that each member of the family must be a pack leader, yet it is clear the Democrats want to shirk that responsibility which slows if not prevents the radical Islamic warrior from becoming the human. Even worse, most Democrats want to take away the tools available to the family to correct the Islamist radical such as expedited wire taps without threat of lawsuits to cooperating phone companies.
As Cesar pointed out, the bulldog wasn't happy in the warrior state of mind always at conflict with the rest of the family. Neither do I believe the Iraqis were happy always at conflict under a Saddam warrior state of mind. But now that the Iraqis have been freed from the Saddam state of mind, it is as if the Democrats want to quit in the middle of the training. It apears the Democrats don't want to spend the remaining time required in Iraq to correct the bad behavior. Amazingly, it even seems the Democrats are quite satisfied to allow radical Islam to remain the warrior instead of the human most would probably like to become if given the opportunity. At the end of The Dog Whisperer episode, the bulldog certainly seemed to be happier just being the dog.
If or when the dog of radical Islam bites again, who do we blame. The dog or the Democrat family that gave up on the dog? If the Democrats don't want to be good pack leaders, we can't expect the warrior to become simply the human.

Odd Conjunction
March 15, 2008 - 13:54 ET by KC MulvilleOn the ABC News web page, there was (as of 2:40pm Saturday) a curious list in the "Must Read" section. These were the items listed:
Mukasey Would Spare Alleged 9/11 Plotters
Pol Rants Being Gay Worse Than Terrorism
Wealth and Fame for Spitzer Call Girl
Vampire Cult, 'Lesbian Killers' to Prison
For those who haven't followed the story, the "Pol Rants..." item refers to an Oklahoma state representative who basically said that the gay agenda is dangerous, and for that, she has received death threats. Within the story, a spokesperson for the gay lobby claimed that "Her comments are so inappropriate and beyond the pale that she's demonstrated that she's not fit for service in public office..."
And yet, in the fourth item on ABC's list, there is a reference to two young girls in Australia who tortured and murdered a third girl, apparently out of lesbian jealousy. The killers admitted that they were sexually turned on during the murder, and wished they had consummated their lust with each other.
I just thought, jeez, if you want to portray the Oklahoma representative as a backward lunatic, you shouldn't post a story about lesbian killers ... it steps on the message, you know?
And, as I predicted...

I, like most on this site, am a big proponent of self-reliance and responsibility. I can almost see a group of "legislators" putting together the plan for affirmative action. "They figured out they should be able to sit anywhere on the bus they would like. Let's give them jobs they haven't worked for so we can keep them under control." I see the same thing being tried on a grander scale with socialism. Bad news.

The msm and the leftist all have mutual reasons for not ever showing this...especially now that Obama is the guy for them.
