For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: D-Day for Clinton and Obama.
- Who will take Ohio and Texas today, and by how much?
- What will the delegate count be at the end of the evening?
- According to WaPo, "A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that should she win one of these two states, 67 percent of Democrats said she should continue her candidacy. And even if she were to lose both, a sizable 45 percent said she should soldier on."
- Regardless of what happens, will she fight on through Pennsylvania thereby extending this battle for at least another six weeks? Or, will she do what is in the best interest of her party, and drop out if she doesn't win big today?

I heard this AM on Joe
March 4, 2008 - 13:15 ET by motherbeltI heard this AM on Joe Scarborough that they may actually redo Florida AND Michigan. Joe was commenting on the irony that they wanted to have early primaries to have an effect, but the DNC said no, and because they did it they would have no effect. Now, they may redo them and have more effect than they ever thought.
What I don't understand is why they don't just do all the primaries. Why all the pressure to pull out on both sides? If they are going to have a primary season, then they should let all the states have their primaries. Jeez, the PA primary isn't even till next month...why even bother? If they're going to go for this "earyl selection" of the candidate, then they need to condense it so that all the states can have their primaries.
I'm so sick of all this "projection" of winners...McCain didn't have enough delegates for the nomination when Romney gave in to pressure and dropped out..a lot of it was projection.....this is just nuts.
There has to be a better way, because, in the immortal words of Bart Simpson.. "I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks AND blows!"
The real FL irony
March 4, 2008 - 13:18 ET by sarcasmoIn the case of both the Democrats & the Republicans, is that if the state had ignored "experts" and had our primary on the ordinary schedule, Florida voters' votes would have been MORE "relevant."

And based on this story about Obama's surprise at being challenged, it may come sooner then I thought.
But I think that one poll result is interesting: there's a large bloc out there that wants Hillary to keep going. That's her base, for sure, and it looks like they're much more resilient than the media gives them credit for. In the general election, it may mean nothing, but it's something to consider ... maybe Hillary's supporters really don't like Obama all that much.

March 4, 2008 - 11:26 ET by dscottOh, so looking forward to Clinton staying in the race. We need only sit back and enjoy while poking now and then to encourage Clinton in her vicious mode. Clinton has only two modes, 1. smiling while figuring out how to destroy her opponents (the classic embrace with Obama at the debates) and 2. smiling while thrusting in the knife and twisting.
She hasn't come all this way to give up now. In her world view there are only winners and losers, if she isn't winning that means she is losing. For the Clintons, Obama can not be simply beaten with votes, the win must be decisive, he must be crushed and discredited otherwise there will be questions, inconvenient questions as to their legitimacy.
Obama has his job cut out for him, Clinton is starting to gain traction via her MSM operatives, at this point if his allies in the MSM don't start airing stories of Clinton issues like Hsu's money bundling, Obama will be burried in an avalanche of dirt, let the mud flinging begin!

Socialism seems to have a loose definition
March 4, 2008 - 15:34 ET by mvfreemanThere is more to actual socialism than income redistribution, which is what Hillary is for.
Socialism is typically defined as collective ownership of the means of production and distribution, which I have not heard Hillary mention. She has not advocated the government taking over an industry, such as health care, she has advocated for government to pay for peoples bills. There will still be private doctors and hospitals.
So in that regard she is not quite as far left as a true "socialist".
http://www.bartleby.com/65/so/socialis.html
You forget "regulation"
March 4, 2008 - 15:45 ET by Jack BauerYou forget "regulation" too.
Ownership and "regulation" of the means of production, allegedly on behalf of the "community" or "proleteriat" (Yeah, right, believe that one.)
Clearly, the "soft" socialism I would accuse most liberals and their ilk of pining for, is not the transitory state between capitalism and communism as envisaged by Marx and Engels.
But it is equally corrosive to my mind, and it is based on regulation and collectivism by another name.
Some of Hill's positions
March 4, 2008 - 16:10 ET by mvfreemanSome of Hill's positions are definitely based on socialist ideals but technically O'Reilly was right to say she is not a socialist.
Her liberal policies are too far over to the left as it is.
I base my view of her being
March 4, 2008 - 16:23 ET by ricklailI base my view of her being a socialist on the things she is touting and the acutal Socialist Party Platform. They aren't just similar they are in some cases word for word.
If you ain't the lead dog, the scenery never changes.-Lewis Grizzard
This is their platform...
March 4, 2008 - 16:55 ET by mvfreeman"The Socialist Party stands for the abolition of every form of domination and exploitation, whether based on social class, gender, race/ethnicity, age, education, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.
We are committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of a democratic socialist society based on compassion, empathy, and respect as well as the development of new social structures. Socialism will establish a new social and economic order in which workers and community members will take responsibility for and control of their interpersonal relationships, their neighborhoods, their local government, and the production and distribution of all goods and services.
For these reasons we call for social ownership and democratic control of productive resources, for a guarantee to all of the right to participate in societal production, and to a fair share of society's product, in accordance with individual needs.
I'm sorry but I have yet to hear Hill call for private ownership and capitalism to be scrapped. If she did she wouldn't have a prayer of getting elected.
As we pursue a socialist transformation of society, we join with others in making radical demands on the existing system: demands that challenge the basic assumptions of a capitalist market economy while pointing the way to a new society. Although reforms will not in themselves bring about socialism, the fight for them will advance the cause by demonstrating the inherent limitations and injustice of the capitalist system. As we build the socialist movement, we organize around a platform committed to our common and interdependent struggles and aspirations.

Best Interest of the Party
March 4, 2008 - 11:18 ET by CGatton"...will she do what is in the best interest of her party, and drop out..."
A case could certainly be made that it would be in the best interest of her party for her to remain in the race, regardless. Despite the small difference, she is to the right of Qbama, or if you prefer, he is to her left, and so can better position herself as a centrist. And that will make a difference.
I know the conventional wisdom on this site and in the media is that Obama is a force to be reckoned with - but I think you underestimate both his negatives and what it takes for an 'ender' to get elected. Uncle Ronnie was an exception in that he won while on the right end of the spectrum. He did not win because he was so conservative, he won despite it, and with convincing margins. However he had three external factors propelling him.
They were, in order of effect: Carter's failed presidency and Iran; his personal likeability; and the unrest in the cold war and in the Soviet Union. Obama has only one of these going for him, and it is his personality. That is, I believe, insufficient to drive his campaign much further than the feel good status it now enjoys.
Don't get me wrong - I think Hillary is in the same spot, since she is far to the left of Bill, and it was his appeal to the center that got him elected. However, the case can easily be made that she will do better, even when she loses, than will Obama, and is therefore better for the party that she remain in the race.
You can smell the setup already - the media really doesn't care whether they win or lose. Or sure, there will be much individual wailing and gnashing of teeth should they lose, but there will follow four years of constant hammering at the Republicans about how the loss was due either to rampant racism or sexism - take your pick.
