For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: 6 dead college students in Illinois.

As our hearts reach out to the families and friends involved in this senseless act, should our minds be thinking it's time to consider securing our campuses? After all, I believe this is the fourth shooting at a school so far this year.

As the parent of one kid in college, and one in high school, my heart sinks every time I hear this kind of news. Is there anything we can do about this, or would any effective security procedures destroy that which is the American college experience?

very sad

This disgusting act unfortunately is catching on, and any stupid college student that wants to be remembered will do keep doing this. It is slowly becoming kind of a like a norm like suicide bombers in Israel.

As far as solutions go. I don't know how effective metal detectors or armed security guards would be.

Stupid writers strike now I have to wait till 2009

It's OK Shawn

This season of 24 was going to be all about saving whales and polar bears with Mr. Freeze replenishing the Polar icecap anyway.

LOL. When I saw that Tony was back from the dead in the trailer, I figured the shark had officially been jumped regardless of whether the rumors about S7 being a green season were true or not.

What is one of the defenses Israel uses?

Israel, being rational, has armed their civilian population to assist in defense. When is the last time you heard or read of an armed thug entering a school in Israel? Since the teachers in schools in Israel can be armed, thugs that enter with weapons are properly dealt with: shot dead.

Israel trusts it own trained, citizens to help defend themselves and others. Isn't it a disgrace that the liberals in the USA DO NOT trust trained citizens to even carry a firearm.

The solution is obscure

In time past when we as a society were ruled by the Ten Commandments, and had a sense of God and sin, this sort of problem was essentially unheard of. The solution is obvious (IMHO); how we from here to there is far less obvious, but it sure is important.

needle

How far back are you talking when you mention a society ruled by the Ten Commandments. I thought the best thing about being an American ever since the constitution was written was "religious freedom"

Stupid writers strike now I have to wait till 2009

See, God says...

...if we find one of these murderers we are supposed to kill him/her upon two or more witnesses' confirmation. God wanted that to be the established norm so that all people would see and hear and would refrain from murder because they would KNOW they were gonna die. That's God's law.

Man's law says 'awww, his mommy didn't love him/her enough as a,child so let's try to rehabilitate him/her in a jail cell and administer lots of hugs at the taxpayer's expense.' and other nonsense hoo-haw dopey ideas like that and then the whole "I'll just get me a lawyer" mentality sets in, and when we don't do what God says the joke is on us.

God had a reason for the death penalty, but as always the "powers that be are more compassionate and smarter than God.

Sentforth

Isn't the 6th commandment thou shall not kill? I thought that it was not mans decision to choose anybody elses fate, only God can do that. My point to needle is that is why so many people came to the United States is because they could escape religious prosecution.

Conservatives are all for freedom right? So why do so many evangelical want to impose their will on everyone else? ie prayer in school? No provocative shows or billboards?

Stupid writers strike now I have to wait till 2009

Well, Shawn

First off I am not an evangelist, I am a pastor, a word that comes from 'pasture' where sheep feed for instance. So if you are one of His sheep and you are hungry I will feed you.

The King James Bible is a worthy 1611 ancient English translation. But the word 'kill' in the original Hebrew Manuscripts is, well in English it is pronounced rasah, and it is a primitive root of " to dash in pieces" esp. a man, and properly means to slay a man, or a murderer.

The original Greek manuscripts render the word as phoneus, which means a premeditated homicide; again, a murderer.

Now,as far as I know, murder is not a religious freedom. If a person could not murder in their respective country in the name of their religion, certainly they don't come to America to achieve their religious murderous deeds.

Now, when God commands that a murderer be removed from this dispensation it is not we who have chosen his destiny, AND it is not God who chose his destiny, it is the murderer himself who has chosen his own destiny.

Discipline is long gone from America and from religion, and it is saddening that I have to explain how come a murderer deserves to be dispatched to the Father.

No offense, I'm just sayin' is all.

Sentforth

What you say can be up to interpretation, I still believe thou shall not kill means exactly that. I respect Christianity and I am trying to find Christ myself as well, because admitted he is hard to find. Too many things I disagree with at the moment and that is what is standing between me and my salvation.

Stupid writers strike now I have to wait till 2009

Well, God bless you

He's not hard to find if you look in and not out.

But I wish to paint you a picture...Let's say someone you love, someone dear to you is being attacked by some evil-doer and stands a good chance of dying, and you walk in the room and strike that evil-doer to stop his/her actions and as a result that person dies.

Do you think God would hold you accountable for this person's demise? No. God will hold the evil-doer accountable for his own demise.

Anyways, good luck in your search and only...I cannot state this strongly enough....ONLY get your facts about our Father straight from the Bible and trust NO man! That includes me...when you study you are not alone. The Holy Spirit is there even if you don't see Him for a while.

I'm just sayin'...

BTW, that was one of the

BTW, that was one of the best examples for the Protestant interpretation of the 6th Commandment.  Kudos.

If I could add one little point to help out, the decalogue is the summary of the overall Hebrew civil law.  My point is this is expanded on in more detail throughout the Pentateuch, which included both matters of killing in war and how criminal murder trials should be run.  There were appointed judges and witnesses for such things.

Therefore, "eye for an eye" for example, is not justification for vigilantism, just as the 6th commandment does not fall under matters of national conflict (only individuals).

One need only look to the factual evidence compiled in the this reference book (below) to see that America IS indeed rooted in the Ten Commandments to such a degree that any opposition to that notion is laughable.

Reality

The "college experience" is already spoiled by left-wing agendas and affirmative action programs which have allowed unqualified students into classrooms, lowering the level of instruction.  A general liberal atmosphere which cowers to wrong-doing and allows rampant misbehavior and cheating without consequence adds to dumbing-down in institutions which were once the envy of the world. In the long run, this "liberalism" has caused a lack of security for fear of being sued for any manner of things. The first security guard who does his duty and plugs a student will lose his job and probably land behind bars like those border patrol agents. Like so much in our nation, this is a mess caused by the LIBERALS. You are no longer "free" to send your kids to a "safe" school in this country. My goodness, in many places you are not "free" to walk in your own neighborhood. Wake up, America.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

i'veseenitall

I am not a big fan of affirmitive action either, but I fail to see how you can blame liberals for this horrible crime. The student that did this was white, had a full scholarship, was liked and had good grades. I read he was on meds and was not taking them anymore. I know you love nothing better to do than blame this countrys problems on Liberals, but I fail to see the corelation in this case.

But go to school four years for a Sociology Degree only to find it's about as useful as a four year Psychology degree.

Maybe this dork was just lashing out at having wasted his college experience on little more than "Can't we all just get along"

Oil Prices up again

I noticed yesterday how it was being reported that oil prices were "approaching $100 a barrel" again. (At just over $96, no less!) I am wondering why I never say that oil prices went down below $90/bbl not long after the one trader decided to lose a few hundred dollars on his bid above $100. I know the answer, but it is a little frustrating to get half of the story.

JFK, John Lennon, and Ronald

JFK, John Lennon, and Ronald reagan were all shot by persons wanting to be famous.  Many of our worst serial killers were doing their murders just to see them in the media.  These school shootings are all copycats wanting to be famous.  Only news blackouts will stop these creeps who want to be 'somebody'.

NS

I understand your angst about college campuses, but I really can't see any way to "secure" a campus.  Unless we make them look like a jail, with riot fencing, metal detectors, etc.

I think the answer is awareness.  When I was at UF, Ted Bundy was rampaging around the state.  Everyone was on a high state of alert, careful in our actions.  Of course, just like after 911, when the immediate horror is over, everyone goes back to ignoring the threat.  It's human nature.

Since 8/1/66 when Charles Whitman killed 16 at UT, I think Texas campuses have something of a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Whitman, btw, was from Palm Beach.

What a small world

My sister was at FSU at the time and didn't take any precautions until after the two girls were killed. I agree with your assessment, Blonde. People just want to hide their heads and ignore problems. We are unwilling to make the sacrifices in order to reap a long-term benefit. Whether it is national security or our immediate safety, or what have you, there is a cost associated with it. Many are just unwilling to pay the price.

Precisely, Hermano

The old head in the sand mentality.  Which has me absolutely furious with the Congress going on vacation before finalizing the FISA bill.

The telecoms are NOT going to cooperate without limited liability.  But it's more important for the dems to play politics with our security.

I don't know who they think their fooling, and with an 11% approval rating, they really ought to get a clue.  Or buy one.

Sorry for the rant.

No apology necessary,

No apology necessary, Blonde. I am looking forward to seeing the Congressional approval rating at about 6% next week. Bush needs to start crackin' some skulls. I was watching a little bit of "True Lies" this evening and they were talking about illegal wore tapping. Today's Obamanation (and this one is a whopper)

It would seem that HRC is no-longer the apple of the communist's eye, as Barack Obama has apparently won them over.

You know, it's a pretty sad day for Hillary when she cannot even maintaing the support of her biggest fans.

(h/t Joseph Farah/WND for both links)

Having fun yet?

RD... Great link...and he

RD...

Great link...and he speaks the truth too...

I have posted for quite awhile now that Osama is someone to be very wary of...it is down-right spooky.

I know a couple that lives down the road from me that spread the paper People's Weekly World...that is where they are allowed to with very few businesses letting them in anymore...nevertheless, they are ardent Obama supporters, but I never doubted anything different from these two... especially the husband, he is totally nuts IMHO and his wife is burnt out from her Hippie Days in SF and too much acid..but the point is they vote....like a lot of other total nutcases will, the closer to communism in this country the better for some of these critters....Obama has a cult beginning to follow him anywhere he leads them...Hillary is just dust in his wind now.

bt, Thanks.

I was driving somewhere yesterday and happened to have Sean on the radio. He was doing a special edition of his Man on the Street inerviews.

The subject was Obama, and why people were going to vote for him. You can probably imagine the aswers he got. If the level of intelligence on the part of the responders was any indication, this country is in seriously deep _______.

It is more than a little disconcerting to think that the American Idol crowd is going to select our next president.

LOL-I mentioned last week that perhaps we can convince Fox to run an all day American Idol marathon on electoin day. Perhaps these pinheads will stay home to watch it.

Its worth a try, anyway.

Inspirational

Yeah but RD...

Obama is so inspirational....he gives them inspiration doncha' know...

That is almost always the answer as to why they are going to vote for Obama...even the callers in the morning on the Was. Journal say the same thing...in ANY age group from the late teens to the older leftist ladies....

but when you ask them how or in what way does he inspire you....duh I don't know...he just does...he gives me hope...for change...then you ask what has ever done in the past to give you the reason for that feeling, well, duh...I don't know...he is just inspirational...on and on it goes....blah blah blah...

Proof that the left are nothing but cradle to grave mind-dumb/numb robot little leftist lemming followers...

Pathetic what this country had turned into....especially after 9-11...but heck the FISA bill is let to expire tonight at midnight that has helped keep ungrateful critters like these alive...

Go figure.

BT, I suspect you have heard

BT, I suspect you have heard Rush's "Obama" ad. It is definitely a play off Hannity's question to a focus group about what Obama has accomplished in his career. "He's a good speaker" amd "Duh" were two of the more popular responses. Indeed, we are in deep doo-doo.

Hey Herm... No I must of

Hey Herm...

No I must of missed that...I got this from Luntz's focus groups of mind-bending lemmings, most likely Hannity was asking the questions via Luntz to them....and like I said the callers on the Washington Journal ect...

I'm glad Rush has that though...I will be on the look-out with great pleasure to catch it.

Eric Burns fired by FNC

My wife just informed me that Eric Burns, host of "Fox News Watch" was fired this week. How did I miss that?

I saw a thread or post here some time ago mentioning that the show's schedule had been played around with and was hard to find. Coincidence? I'm as stunned as a Norwegian Blue parrot.

underlying cause

Are we ready to seriously consider the underlying philosophy that results in such atrocities? Public institutions teach as fact to our young people the world view of evolution. The average person hears the word "evolution" and thinks "science." Yet, macro-evolution is a false belief that says God is OUTSIDE the realm of science. This belief is taught in almost all public school science. However, it is an UNnscientific belief that does absolutely NOTHING for true science. Rather, it communicates to people that there is no ultimate Authority to Whom they are accountable and Who has established a moral code by which men should live. Rampant murder, rape, family breakup, abortion and so much more are the inevitable result of a belief that humans are "evolved animals" without morality. In order to begin offsetting these acts of violence, we must communicate to young people that there IS a Creator...and that TRUE science points to the Creator.
