For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama and Romney take surprising leads in late California polls:

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama surged to a big lead over Hillary Clinton in California hours before "Super Tuesday" voting began in 24 states, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Tuesday.

In the Republican race, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney held a 7-point advantage on Arizona Sen. John McCain in California, while McCain added to commanding double-digit leads in New York and New Jersey.

Here are some other numbers:

In California, which alone provides more than one-fifth of the Democratic delegates needed for the nomination, Obama led Clinton by 49 percent to 36 percent, the poll found. The margin of error was 3.3 percentage points.

Clinton pulled into a 5-point lead in New Jersey, 46 percent to 41 percent, after being tied on Monday. Obama held a 45 percent to 42 percent edge on Clinton in Missouri. Both polls had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Obama had a 20-point edge in Georgia, aided by a more than 3-to-1 lead among black voters.

[...]

McCain held a 26-point edge on Romney in New York and a 29-point advantage in New Jersey as he pushed for a convincing triumph that could knock Romney out of the race to be the Republican candidate in November's presidential election.

McCain held a narrow 34 percent to 27 percent lead over former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in Missouri, with Romney running third at 25 percent. The margin of error was 3.4 percentage points.

WASHINGTON -- President

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's new defense budget would provide a new Virginia-class submarine and at least $2.7 billion to continue construction of the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier in Newport News.

Gerald ford was a NICE GUY, but perhaps some presidents do not earn the right to have Aircraft carriers named after them.  I was a bit peezed that Jimmy Carter had a Submarine named after him.

Can you imagine having a ship named "The Slickster?"

Why not a Jimmy Carter submarine?

He did a good job of torpedoing the economy, the Israelis, and the Iran hostage situation.

Former UN Ambassador John

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton has brought up a point that those of us int he Intelligence community has understood for years, that the segments of the US Intelligence Community  have been politicized and act on dogma rather than logic.  (Guess which side of the aisle...)

In his column today for the Wall Stree Journal, he brings up a key point of how the recent National Intleligence Estimate ragrding Iranian nuclear programs has been manipulated by the editors from the State Department Intelligence folks who seek to change US policy by focusing political opinion rather than providing the truth to the decision makers.

 His key passage is:

The NIE's first key judgment is "we judge with high confidence that in fall, 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program." Most of the world, predictably, never got beyond that opinion. Only inveterate footnote hunters noticed the extraordinary accompanying footnote which redefined Iran's "nuclear weapons program" to mean only its "nuclear weapon design and weaponization work," and undeclared uranium conversion and enrichment activities. Card sharks -- not intelligence professionals -- could be proud of this sleight of hand, which grossly mischaracterizes what Iran actually needs for a weapons program.

Today, I voted early, greeted by long lines and yes I showed my ID (by law). There were even a few african-Americano's at our conservative leaning enclave. A sheriff deputy walked in for a brief moment, yet, I didn't see one disenfranchised look cast upon a single face.

Later I went to the coffee shop. The wife of one of the barista's said, "Oh, I HAVE to vote for Obama!" Then she gushed out a giddy giggle.

I bit, "Okay why do you 'have' to vote for Obama?"

"Because my grandmother shook his hand in one of his commercials."

So ... it's as easy as that. Politicians don't need experience or money. All they need is to shake every hand of every grandmother; This phenomenon is sweeping the nation, it  will change politics as we know it and will be forever known as The Barrack Experience.

Intelligencer Journal

I wanted to touch Barack Obama. I wanted to touch history.

So, after a two-hour wait outside the rally entrance Sunday, I passed through a metal detector, retrieved my keys and phone and headed down the plaza steps into grassy Rodney Square.

I hurried forward and joined a crowd already five-deep against the barriers around the small, bunting-draped platform, where Obama was to speak in 80 minutes.

As people filled in behind us, my 15-year-old son told me he was going to join his mother, brother, grandfather and aunt, who were sitting 75 feet behind us on the plaza steps.

They would have a good view, but I preferred to remain close to the platform, close to history, close to the chance to touch Barack Obama.

"Radical" Muslims 4 Obama

Despite espousing positions on many domestic issues conservatives agree with, Ron Paul has managed to turn off those folks because of the usual suspect fanatics who support him using classic leftist tactics.

However having very similar views and supporters hasn't prevented the rise of Barack Hussein Obama.

Racists live on the east coast

There is nothing surprising about Obama and Mormon Romney leading in Cali as the west has always been a place where people were not judged by looks or idiot beliefs but on the person they are.
That is the reason dolts like Daschle and Johnson spew out of Conservative South Dakota. They are judged on their likability factor and not politics.

The one race I'm most interested in is North Dakota with it's plenty coup of Norwegians if Obama will win that state. That is the only interesting thing happening today.

The racists though live on the east coast, always have and always will. That is why race matters and is a big deal.....as those racists make it a big deal.

"People only insist that a debate stop when they are afraid of what might be learned if it continues." - George Will

North dakota is an

North dakota is an interesting case.
The state will inveterably vote for a Republican for President since they prefer Republican Defense and For affairs policies.

But the state also re-elects some of the most liberal Democrats as Senators and a Representative. I believe this is due to the desire to get as much as they can as a small state in the way of Federal funding. Ag programs, etc.

North Dakota is not inherently racist, but VERY untrusting of people from out of state (Military personnel etc)

The dmocrats will come from two clumps surrounding the two Universities and that will heavily flavor the Democrat results.

North Dakota

I happen to live in North Dakota...I am not a native North Dakotan. We came here while in the Air Force, and liked it so much we decided to stay. I have lived here for the better part of 20 years, and I do not believe that this is a racist state. You would be surprised at how much support Obama has here. You are correct in that ND does usually support the Republican in a Presidential election, and does usually support Democrats in the state's national offices (Senators and our Representative). The reason for that is that the Democrats are very adept at bringing home lots of federal money for the farmers and the agricultural industry in the state. Believe me, we Republicans in the state would love to unseat all 3 of our national representatives, but the farmers in the state manage to keep them in office almost every time. Interestingly, our governor is a very successful Republican and is running for his third term, and our legislature is predominately Republican. North Dakota is not a racist state, but can be rather provincial in its thinking, and is not always very welcoming to new ideas. However, fortunately, I believe that that is beginning to change.

PS: Yep, I grew up on the

PS:

Yep, I grew up on the UND Campus and lived there until I was commissioned in the US Army and moved away, and recognize the same feeling regarding Dorgan, Pomeroy, and Conrad.  I was absolutely DISGUSTED with them during the Clinton Impeachment fight.

I agree that North Dakota is not racist, but will also admit that the state has the worst relations between the Air Force Bases and the local communities of anywhere I have lived which I feel ashamed about.

ND

I agree with your assessment of the relations between the local communities here and the Air Force bases. I am an Air Force brat, born and raised, and my spouse (also an Air Force brat), was also in the Air Force, so I have a lot of experience living on and around Air Force bases all over the US (and overseas, as well). North Dakota is a wildly beautiful state, and North Dakotans by and large are good, hardworking, kind people, but they do tend to keep non-natives at arm's length. What's interesting, is that most people here believe that they have a very close relationship with the military personnel and their dependents...they are not aware of how they come across to those of us who are not natives to the state. The relations are all on a very "surface" level. Many locals are not terribly interested in the military lifestyle and the impact that that has on the personnel and their dependents. They are friendly and polite, but at a detatched distance. I suppose the reason for this detatchment is that most North Dakotans are born and raised here, and most have never lived anywhere but North Dakota (you'd be surprised how many here have never flown on a plane, or seen an ocean). Their social circle consists almost entirely of friends and family that have also lived here their entire lives. There is not much "new blood" coming into the state, beyond military who are here for a short time, and in whom most North Dakotans are not that interested in. It is a quaint, but very insular life here, and as a result, the outlook by many locals can be quite provincial. Paradoxically, this insularity can be both a strength and a weakness for the state. My family and I have a joke that those of us not born and raised here must not know the "secret handshake" that the natives must know. However, in the last 8-10 years or so, that is beginning to change a bit, I believe due to the work of Governor Hoeven, who is working very hard to broaden North Dakota's horizons to interests beyond the boundaries of the state. Time will tell.

Super Tuesday

I wish all these people who are going to pieces about John McCain would all take their Prozac and get a grip. The reason Republicans are faced with a less than satisfying slate of candidates (particularly conservative candidates), is because so many of the conservatives in the party sat on their hands for so long and didn't get behind one of the more conservative candidates earlier, and helped build a strong, more viable conservative candidate. As a result, we now have the situation we have today. I have had it with Rush, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, and the rest of the hysterical conservative voices screaming now about how horrible the prospect of a John McCain nominee would be. At this point in time, Republicans need to face some not too pleasant facts: We will very likely lose the election in November if we don't nominate someone who has a realistic chance of defeating Clinton or Obama. Principles and ideals are all great, but unfortunately, I think that that train has left the station, and we as conservatives have missed the train. Right now, we need to focus on who is the candidate that is most likely to be able to defeat the Democratic nominee, and that is John McCain. While McCain may not be perfect, with an 83% conservative rating from the American Conservative Union, he is infinitely more acceptable than either Clinton who has a 9% rating, or Obama, who has an 8% rating. So for all those out there who think, erroneously, that there isn't a great deal of difference between McCain and the Democratic candidates, think about that.

PS... So for all those

PS...

So for all those out there who think, erroneously, that there isn't a great deal of difference between McCain and the Democratic candidates, think about that.

I am getting sick of other people telling me I think erroneously, or how to think... Nobody will make me vote for that despicable man.

Btw...the voting machines are down or just aren't or some such there in parts of Ca. at the moment...what do you think will happen election night if it is McCain the leftist?

Do not think this isn't being done for Hillary at the moment...the dems control Ca...it will be done all over the US by the dems...as always.

If McCain is nominated... illegal immigration will attempt to be made a non-issue by the msm and all the behind the scenes party big-wigs in the so-called 'R' party...this is a must for them...in the debates I doubt it will brought up much, neither side wants this, especially if it is McCain...partly the reason he is being backed by others in my opinion.

Well, it is a number one issue with me and I won't vote for this man...ever.

BigTimer-

I am not telling you that you think erroneously, or how to think-What I did say, was that for those who think that McCain is as liberal as the Democratic candidates, it is very plain according to the ACU's ratings, that he clearly is not. Many have said that he is as liberal as Clinton and Obama, and that is just not so. That is erroneous. It is a free country...you are free to vote for whoever you want to...but if others who feel as you do don't support McCain if he wins the nomination, and Republicans lose this election, be prepared to suffer the consequences when the Democrats take over the White House next January. And bear in mind, they will have the White House, and both houses of Congress, too.

PS... While I also respect

PS...

While I also respect your choice and way you think, I do know about McCain very well, I have listened to his floor speeches for years, I have watched his votes for years, I have watched him stab us conservatives in the back for years, even during a time of war.

He is nothing but a liberal, nothing but a mean despicable little man who is a legend in his own mind.

I will never vote for him.

Period.

Okay-That's your prerogative. Good luck.

PS... I do want you to

PS...

I do want you to know that generally speaking I agree with your assessment of what will happen if a dem. gets in and that generally we should all stick together and all that jazz, especially because of SC judges....I have posted as such....

Well, I guess I shouldn't have because I never ever thought or entered my mind that it would come down to another leftist masquerading as a conservative.

I just can't do it.

He, Huck and others will be remembered by me with nothing but disdain for a long long time.

BigTimer

To me, it simply comes down to this...This election, unfortunately, has appparently become a case of the lesser of two evils. I am not thrilled with McCain as a nominee. But...in spite of his shortcomings, I don't believe that voting for him would ever be worse than the alternatives, which are not voting at all, or voting for the Democratic nominee (whoever that will end up being). Those are things I would never do. Period.
